Teintée Africaine | Tourmaline | Dawn
The best songs from Africa and the diaspora. A gathering of crooners and songbirds. Slick arrangements and vocal exploits that will tug at your heart strings. Best felt with your person nearby.
Much like the homegrown current and traditional genres it picks from for the exquisite blends we enjoy, Afro Pop is as good with churning out fun, party jams as it is  with crafting sexy ballads or smooth downtempos. That is the main focus in our last part of this Teintée Africaine edition — codenamed “Tourmaline”. We started you off with a solid “warm up” set and followed up with one for the…

Le magasin des envies, Vol. 16
Here’s a little something something from our vaults. I won’t rehash the theme behind this playlist series – after 16 (!) editions, we know what we’re getting into. Within, I have something old, I have something (kinda) new. I have a little bit sass, some class and a lot that would make you go ooouuuh. And I end with a little preview of to expect when the next edition comes through. Continue…

Hip-Hop to Me... A Panoramic View (HH101)
Allow me to get mushy for a hot second… My brothers and I here at The Buck Stop are hip-hop kids. We live, breathe and identify with the culture. We’re older now, but can still spend endless hours on very animated debates about the music. Hip-Hop has and is still sparking and nourishing our intellects. As we celebrate 50 years (!!!) of hip-hop, I thought I’d challenge my guys to encapsulate their…

Teintée Africaine: Ankara
A look back at a "Teintée Africaine" set -- codenamed 'Ankara' -- that inspired many joyous occasion, as we prepare to unleash a new set today.
As expected the usual suspects (artists representing Nigeria, South Africa, and Tanzania) are here and the dominant genres (afrobeat, amapiano) can be found in abundance. We’ve also made it a point to highlight music or movement from countries that usually don’t get much shine on the continental stage. So, after Uganda and then Zimbabwe in previous updates, it’s time for Angola’s bright and…

Teintée Africaine: Kanga
A look back at a "Teintée Africaine" set -- codenamed 'Kanga' -- that inspired many joyous occasion, as we prepare to unleash a new set today.
The idea behind ‘Teintée Africaine’ came about when I noticed a growing trend: European acts of African descent were increasingly tapping into the current popular African sounds and genres to innovate. The idea, then, was to pair those works with those made at the source. While the latter enjoyed less plaudits outside its locale, I felt that it deserved just as much of the spotlight. (more…)

Pure Lounge 16
Though "Pure Lounge 16" came about last summer (2021), the sounds herein feel just as bright and light as they did when we were overtaken by tranquility lakeside somewhere in Italy. Now, let the music play!
Picture yourselves by a tranquil lake, a faint breeze, and soft rays of a setting sun caressing your beaming face… Imagine that sensation of peacefulness and lightness… All is easy like a Sunday morning (word to Lionel Richie!). That’s the setting I was in early last summer when I concocted this ‘Pure Lounge 16’ playlist. And today, with a grueling work week finally over, it felt like a good…

Barrió Latino: Llamando al Salsero
Wraith Yoshi's "Lazer Dots" playlists try to encapsulate the essence of a genre. With "Barrió Latino" he opens his window into salsa music with his favorites.
There’s something about salsa that has always cheered me up and infused some lightness in me. Here, I have compiled some of my favourites classics and I hope that, wherever you are while listening to this playlist, I can get you dancing or (at the very least) be filled with the same effervescence that I was. Who knows? This might just get you to sign for a salsa class near you.  (more…)

Teintée Africaine: Malkia
We're still revisiting our flagship playlist. When it came to the third "Teintée Africaine" edition, we devised to create playlists that would fit specific parts of a festive day.
Given the previous drawn out experience with narrowing down the selection for Teintée Africaine, this time around we made sure to get more hands ears on the job. As the number of songs kept growing, we had to find a way to present the playlist that wouldn’t overwhelm the listener. In the course of arranging the songs, we figured a way. While our picks might be heard at joyous occasions, some…
