"not bad! i've seen professional drivers hit the curb." she would take an eight though. she didn't want to think about what it would look like if she got to drive a fire truck. she'd probably get a fresh new arrest for disturbing the peace with the siren. she kept that thought to herself though.
he seemed to enjoy it, realizing she had his sweatshirt. “wore it right home and you didn’t even notice,” she explained, to be fair she’d expected to be back here a lot sooner. shit was always happening out west except when it was convenient for her. still, she was relieved when he told her to keep it. it meant whatever was up between them wasn’t over because she’d ghosted and he’d been very busy. and it was one of her favorites. it didn’t smell like him anymore, but she could remedy that while she was here.
“thanks,” she put the sweatshirt back on the seat of the car. “i think i’ve got time for that. i gotta prove you right.” she shut the car door behind her and locked it with the fob. alice caught up with buck and looped her arm through his, looking up at him for confirmation that was okay.
buck watched intently as she expertly parked, brows raised in mild surprise. folding his arms across his chest, he glanced up to meet her gaze before appraising her work.
“ eh, not bad for an east coast gal, ” he nodded, fairly impressed despite his subdued reaction, “ eight outta ten — now try doing that with a vehicle three times that size, ” he smirked, teasing one last time.
( not that buck had ever actually parallel parked one of the 118’s trucks, or that he wasn’t also technically from the east coast. )
just as he was turning to enter the cafe, he realized alice was still fiddling with something in the back seat and paused, taking a few steps back toward the jeep before a wadded up hoodie was thrust in his general direction.
“ oh— ” he blinked a moment, confusion quickly turning into realization as he reached forward to take the sweatshirt from her, “ so THAT’S where that went. ” buck’s expression softened and a slight chuckle escaped his lips before he handed it back to alice.
“ keep it. i’m almost positive it looks better on you, ” he paused, taking a few backwards steps toward the door of the cafe, “ — maybe you could show me later. ”

she was about to say something as she made for the parking spot when buck jumped out of the car. thank goodness she wasn't moving because he couldn't have gotten out of there faster. it was probably a good instinct, but she still felt a pang of something she couldn't quite describe about the move.
alice drove up just passed the car in front of the opening and began the masterful process of parallel parking. while it wasn't something that was ever a problem for her living in the city, seeing as she didn't own a car there, SHIELD had taught them all how to drive a variety of vehicles in a variety of circumstances. the only license she didn't have was a pilot's license and that was because she outright refused to get in the pilot's seat of a plane. deep inside, part of her hoped her parking impressed him. "rate it. rate my parking job, i dare you." she walked around the car to the sidewalk, waiting for her praise. "didn't think a new yorker could do that, did you?"
alice grabbed her purse out of the backseat and saw it. she hesitated and then grabbed the sweatshirt and held it out to him. "this is your's by the way. i stole it by accident when i left. wore it a lot, it's been to three countries and one territory, but if you want it back...we can leave it in the car while we're inside i just didn't want to forget to give it you."
“ woah, hey alright — sore subject, i get it, ” he teased, holding both hands up in mock surrender.
buck kept his eyes peeled for a spot, gaze flicking back to alice every now and then as he pondered his response to her words. her comment about vigilantism didn’t seem too out of the ordinary, but her tone of voice hinted at something else. something unsaid.
but maybe buck was reading too much into things.
wrinkling his nose, buck shook his head, pointing to a spot that had just been vacated, “ sure, but it’s kinda terrible as far as insurance goes. ooh shit, right there! between the silver truck and that red sedan. here, hold on — ”
suddenly buck hopped out of the jeep, just as quickly ending their conversation as he jogged toward the empty spot, keeping an eye out for any potential parking spot thieves.

"i've run missions on less sleep than this, i'll be fine." that was only something to brag about in certain circles, but that didn't matter right now. she wasn't doing anything much till later tomorrow. she'd have time to nap. "you don't need to apologize to me, andrei. not for keeping me up late or for any of this. you didn't do anything wrong." she meant it. if she couldn't handle someone having nightmares after what they'd been through, then she wasn't cut out for any other aspect of her job. she didn't know whether to ask any further questions. she wanted to know, but maybe now wasn't the right time. "what's the dream like? is it exactly how it happened or is it different?" she leaned back on the bed a little, putting her arms behind her to serve as a sort of tripod to prop her torso up as she sat.

He doesn't say anything, just a glance to the side in her direction before looking back ahead of him. His hand in his lap and the arm with the device doing the same, his green eyes lingers on the metallic material before feeling himself tense just slightly at her question. Andrei didn't think he made it obvious but no one had seen the nightmares, no one had been there when he woke up. This was new and he doesn't looking at her, instead turning his head away to look into the darkness at his side opposite of her. Her movement, however, made his head turn to see where she was going. It was then he saw her at the foot of his bed and he looked back down at his arm. "....It was." He mumbles out before taking in a breath. "Just....how I lost it...that's all." He moved to lay back, his hand lifting to press at the bridge of his nose as eyes squeezed shut. "I'm sorry...you don't need to be here. If you need sleep...."

"yeah? well, i don't really care what tony stark thinks and you shouldn't either." it wasn't like she spent a lot of time around him, after all, the guy had been the reason she'd been a fugitive for a few months, but still. she wasn't going around seeking the billionaire's approval and she didn't think anyone else should be either.
she turned her attention towards the road as she started driving again. she hoped they were able to find a parking spot near by, but it being LA she didn't expect much. "i think you're better off as a firefighter though. even with the danger, it's legal. the vigilante thing is a little murky," she told him. she should know, even if he didn't know that side of her.
"least you get insurance though, right?" that was a serious benefit of having a legit job, alice hadn't expected to appreciat that so much, but here she was trying to bring it up as a positive of their lifestyles. "tell me if you see parking, i can parallel park. i got this, i just gotta get a spot."
buck relaxed a bit once their destination had been cleared up and traffic finally lightened to where they could drive at a semi-normal pace.
the more he talked about the accident, the more his leg seemed to ache. his new therapist would probably reassure him this was a net positive, the talking. suppressing emotions, in his experience, was never a good thing, but it was an instinct he had to actively work to fight. being around alice however, things just tended to feel lighter, easier.
he didn’t want to bring down the mood too much, and clearly neither did alice. the joke she cracked elicited an eyebrow raise and a soft smile as he turned to finally look at her at the stop sign.
“ i don’t think tony stark would be too keen on me taking up that mantle, ” he shook his head, feigning disappointment for a moment before a slight chuckle escaped his lips. they continued their drive for a little while longer before buck could finally spot the small cafe in the distance.

"yeah, that one! thanks." with the directions confirmed, she was able to fully listen to his story while they drove.
she knew she missed a lot and had seen on the news that a firefighter had gotten hurt in a bombing, but she hadn't called. that was totally on her, she didn't know the extent of it until now and hearing it straight from him, it sounded harrowing. she'd been in some bad situations, but she would still rank a whole truck falling on your leg being up there in terms of bad.
"shit." she didn't want this to just be heavy. really, she hadn't meant for it to get heavy at all. it was, but he seemed alright enough with it now that she could joke. he'd told her after all, and he was back at work. she didn't really have time to calculate the risk before it was out of her mouth. "25% metal, huh? you gonna be the next iron man with that?" she looked over at him for real as they stopped at a stop sign, raising an eyebrow, "or i guess you'd be titanium and cobalt man?"
“ the one with those amazing jelly donuts? yeah, think so. ”
the truth is, he hadn’t been there since the last time he and alice had been there together, before the accident, before his stint in the hospital, before… well, a lot.
sliding his phone out of his pocket he did a quick google search to confirm, “ yep. still there. ” tucking his phone away, he glanced back up at the road before responding, but decided not to meet alice’s gaze just yet. stolen glances toward her own eyes in the rearview mirror punctuated his thoughts as he recapped a bit of what she had missed in their time apart.
“ — and well, i’m now fifteen percent titanium and cobalt, ” he paused, anxiously rubbing at the scar on the top of his leg beneath his jeans, “ although, maybe more like twenty five since it’s one leg. ”
buck shrugged, letting the car interior fall to silence after his story, mildly concerned by alice’s potential reaction. what started as excitement upon her initial phone call was slowly morphing into worry and dread and buck desperately wished that wasn’t a permanent change.

"that coffee shop we went to that one time still open?" they'd gone out for coffee a few times, and alice wouldn't claim she had a perfect memory for directions, but she was pretty sure it was still only about 5 or 6 blocks away and a couple blocks over.
alice kept driving, glancing over at buck in the rearview mirror when it was safe to do so. things between them were different and she was pretty sure that it was because they were different, she just wasn't quite sure how they'd changed yet. "how've you been?" it was a simple question, and they could talk more when she wasn't driving, but she wanted to find out. whether or not she was prepared to bring it up, she cared about how he was doing. they could get back to what they were before after their coffee.
buck truly hadn’t thought this far ahead. he was perfectly willing to let alice take the lead — she was in the driver’s seat after all - but the thought of not having any real privacy for another three hours was starting to drive him a bit insane.
he was however, on the tail end of the night shift, and hadn’t consumed any caffeine since about six in the morning. the effects of which were notably starting to wear off. coffee was probably a necessity for whatever they had planned for later in the afternoon. god knows he wouldn’t make it til evening.
“ you know, coffee sounds great actually — ” buck stifled a yawn, settling into his seat. his gaze flicked to alice for a moment, trying to gauge the sudden shift in mood inside the jeep. he knew they hadn’t been too communicative over the past few months, but he didn’t hold it against her.
her job was a lot.
buck’s was too, but they operated in vastly different worlds, and sometimes that was hard to reckon with.

divinity kink in less of a "fuck me in a nun habit" way and more of a "put me on my knees and rewrite my understanding of faith and show me what a loving god's hand feels like and give me mercy and wrath and splendor and leave your communion dripping from my lips and teach me how every part of my body was meant to worship you"

"have to say, i was a little worried you weren't going to come," alice admitted as she put her keys in the ignition. she phrased it like an offhand comment, something that wouldn't have hurt her feelings if he hadn't. she almost leaned into the back to hand him what he'd left behind the last time they'd been together, but she didn't want to make it seem like she was rushing.
she started the car and pulled out of her parking spot into the slow flow of traffic on the road. "where are we going? i mean i do have a hotel room, i wasn't lying about that, but check in isn't until 3." she glanced at the clock on her dashboard, it was around noon, so she had time, "you want to get coffee or something?" alice asked hopefully. she'd had one on the plane, but the amount of caffeine she consumed hadn't killed her or made her jittery yet so that meant she still had room for more. she didn't really have much of a plan here and while she was almost always down for a hookup, showing up during daylight hours before her hotel checkin had been a purposeful attempt to show him she was sorry for...disappearing, not showing up, sorry for the aspects of her job and her personality that made things difficult.
buck’s gaze flicked back to the station once to check for any wandering eyes, before leaning in to the kiss. it was brief, but left him wanting desperately to prolong the gesture. now wasn’t the time or place for something like that however, but buck couldn’t help the anxious bouncing of one leg as he stood beside the window and let his own eyes take in every little detail of her.
the comment drew a genuine laugh from his chest, though he wouldn’t have expected anything less.
“ oh? well lucky for you, help is already on the way, ” he teased, leaning in for a second kiss before pulling away to make his way over to the passenger seat. buck couldn’t jog around the car fast enough. as he closed the door and latched his seatbelt, he glanced back at the station for a second, spotting eddie, hen, and a few others retreating to their own cars; second shift had already been locked and loaded by the time he’d finished at his locker.
“ now let’s get out of here. ”

she caught a hint of the salute in the window and laughed. she knew he couldn't resist her. his calling her 'ma'am' only added to the list of things she'd missed about him. they'd definetly have to pick that back up if they could.
she waited after he hung up the phone, her stomach doing a small olympic gymnastics routine as she did so. she was ready for this, for whatever outcome she was met with. anger, annoyance, the potential for him having a partner and not wanting to pick up where they left off. as soon as she saw him coming out of the station rationality went on the back burner. she smiled brightly as she saw him, charming and hot as ever.
"you're gonna write me up? that's adorable." alice tilted her head to catch his lips with her's. the kiss wasn't chaste in any way, if she could have pulled him through the car window with just that touch she would have. that wasn't possible though and after a moment, alice drew back and looked him over. "you look good too, buck. maybe i should have some kind of emergency so you can come rescue me."
buck caught a few raised eyebrows from some of his fellow firefighters as he paced the length of the station while on the phone. they were surely used to his lengthy phone calls by now, but this was different. he hadn’t heard from alice in months, and the stupid fluttery feeling in his stomach had started the moment he’d heard her voice on the other line and showed no signs of fading.
“ ma’am, yes ma’am, ” buck grinned, gaving a half-assed salute from the window before hanging up the phone and jogging over to his locker to change.
he was outside in no time, striding up to the driver’s side of the car with all the confidence of buck 1.0. resting an arm against the open window, buck leaned in to whisper into alice’s ear, “ i think i’m gonna have to write you up, miss. you know it’s a violation — driving while looking like that. ”

“took me 5 minutes to circle the block for the car parked here to leave,” she’d been determined to get this exact spot. “i’m flattered you think i’m immune to misdemeanors.” alice turned the keys to her rental car over in her hands, wondering if she was crazy for seeking him out like this. maybe buck didn’t want to see her at all and she was just going to look like an idiot in the end. she could handle that though, for the most part if he didn’t want to see her, she could find someone else to keep her company on the west coast. it would suck because she happened to like buck for more than just his body, but she could manage just fine. she tapped her fingers on the dash hoping he caught the sound through the microphone. "unless you've got something better to do, i think it would benefit you to get your ass outside."
“ it’s definitely illegal, but something tells me you’d have found a way around it, ” buck let out a slight exhale of a laugh as he glanced out one of the station’s front windows. sure enough, a blue jeep was parked on the opposite side of the street. he could make out a figure inside, blonde and all too familiar.
something buried deep inside buck was urging him to decline, but another something was smothering it, tamping it down before he could ever begin to doubt himself again.
buck glanced up at the clock for a second before replying, smirk clear in his tone, “ you know, i think your clock’s a little fast. my shift ended five minutes ago. ”

alice held the phone to her ear, "i considered calling 911 to get your attention, but i think that's a crime. i'm out front in the blue jeep if you're interested." maybe she was being a little presumptuous, calling buck again after how many months, but she had to take a shot at it. besides, she had something of his she didn't mean to take and she was going to give it back even though it had served her well. "i can wait until your shift's over if you'd prefer that. even got a hotel room too." her lips curved up into a smile as she looked across the street at the 118.

that was way too close of a call.

could you at least look like you like me for an hour? is that so hard?
admit it. i'm not half bad.
didn't think i would enjoy this as much as i am.
did you take acting classes growing up?
excuse me! i'm just trying to sell the illusion!
do you think they bought it?
you don't look like you love me. you look like you're constipated.
way to lay it on thick. i think you might have done too good of a job.
pretend to laugh at one of my jokes.
i guess i didn't expect you to dress up for this. i'm impressed.
you know, if you treated me like that on the regular, i might actually start falling in love with you.
they have to believe we're together. how hard can it be?
quick, pretend like you're about to kiss me.
you clearly care more about the tiny appetizers than you do me.
i'm just here for the free champagne.
you clean up nice.
that honestly wasn't as bad as i thought it would be.
they're looking over here. quick, say something funny.
that... was surprisingly smooth of you.
you don't date much, do you?
we should pretend to date more often.
hey! my eyes are up here!
shit, they're coming. kiss me.

"it does, doesn't it?" she had only mentioned her own lapsed catholic faith to him on purpose a few times, but he'd picked up on it. it was probably the name argent angel that implied it, but she couldn't be sure. in moments like these it was strangely comforting. "i don't plan on getting beheaded for my troubles tonight though." alice came to a sudden stop as the perp did, and she held out her arm too stop her companion too. "is he communicating with someone in that building or am i tripping?" she was seeing a flashing light coming from a second story window and thought she was hearing the man shouting.
˖ ࣪⭑ Leather shoes were relentless on the pavement, feet falling heavy and hard over and over again in a dead sprint. It was an effort to keep stride with her, but not one that he minded exerting. She was a brilliant fighter and wicked with a chase in all of the ways that made his head spin faster. There was a buzzing sound coming from the perp that made Matt think he was carrying something dangerous. It made his grin grow more teeth and he cocked his head slightly, leaping over an array of garbage bags on the sidewalk. His mouth twitched, ' Saint Valentine was as much a martyr as the rest of us, seems fitting doesn't it ? '

"fine, have fun not taking my advice." she told him. his glare really didn't affect her, she'd been shot with much worse over her time with SHIELD. she even managed to find his last comment funny. "i won't make suggestions," alice replied. she wasn't about to help him try and get away from SHIELD's watchful eye. she wasn't even about to extend the same kindness she had to other people to him. he hadn't earned it yet. she did return the smile though it was much more restrained. "i won't chirp if it's not necessary, but know that if i'm talking i think it's worth listening to." they had everything ready for the mission, so now they could just shoot the shit until the message came in it was time for them to jump into action.
Tumblr media
There's a glare in her direction, well not so much a glare but a look of annoyance at the reply. "I appreciate the words of advice but I am doing just fine." He wasn't going to admit that there were people I liked, they happened to be working for him. All of SHIELD on the other hand was a different story. She feel into that category of annoying but he would do what he had to do. "Fine, well, still I can't have you talking all the time." He mumbles out, waving it off as if it was nothing. Batroc chose to ignore the comment about jail, seeing as that wasn't entirely fair. Not that he was going to say anything. "Oh I promise, I am your's to listen to." He grins slightly. "Besides, where else can I go?"
