Three things I want from the reboot

1. More Narn

So I just found out about the Babylon 5 reboot and I have THOUGHTS.

My initial, kneejerk reaction was OH GOD NO. Because I love it so much and have so much nostalgia about it and we have seen so many bad reboots and remakes.

But then I started thinking.

Babylon 5 was TWO DECADES ahead of its time in terms of its style of storytelling. It was intended to be a coherent five-series narrative arc, like a set of five novels - but JMS was trying to do it in the 90s, on network television, when the default was still 26-episodes-most-of-which-are-filler, every episode must be standalone enough that weekly viewers can dip in and out, and actor contracts are such that you can’t guarantee getting people back when you need them or at all. When I rewatch it now, I still love it, but GOD you can see all the seams and patches and awkward retcons because an actor couldn’t continue, or the network demanded something different. You can see the storylines that were supposed to happen (Sinclair never should have left, Talia never should have left, ALL OF THE PACING OF SEASON 4/SEASON 5, etc…)

It was also two decades ahead of its time in terms of queer content. Delenn’s storyline was clearly a trans allegory: I’ve even heard, though I can’t source right now, that they originally wanted it to be explicitly trans, in that she was going to present male or some form of gender neutral in the first series and then transition in the second. Susan and Talia were in love, and they made it as explicit as they could. And I still remember the disbelief and delight I felt in That One Episode where Marcus and Stephen use fake identities as a married m/m couple and it is ABUNDANTLY clear from their reactions and the context that this is completely normal and no big deal.

(Hey anyone else wonder what would have happened if Talia had stuck around and Marcus still joined? Because my thought on that is HOLY SHIT OT3 OF THE DISASTER BISEXUALS YES PLEASE.)

So now I think… what could JMS do NOW? Two decades on? In a storytelling environment where TV series are treated as novels or box sets from the get-go? In the wake of Sens8′s success? In a world where all of his “messaging” - everything he had to say with his characters and stories - is not only still relevant but even more relevant? Shall we talk about the rise of fascism? The treatment of telepaths as a stand-in for so many other abused groups? The post-colonial environmental disaster of the Narn homeworld? The corporate and political greed that awakens the Shadows? The refusal to bow to the paternalistic designs of a supposedly “more advanced” culture? SHALL WE FUCKING TALK ABOUT THAT?

So after all of that - my reaction becomes cautious optimism. I’m going to wait and see. But I think I am going to hope.

The one big stumbling block of course is HOW DO YOU RECAST LONDO AND G’KAR but I feel like I’ve got the answer to one half of that question: Jack Black as Londo. HE HAS THE RANGE, YOU KNOW HE DOES. DO IT.
