AAOAOAUUAAGGAAHHHHAGH!!!! I'M GONNA MELT!!!!!
BANGER AS ALWAYS!!! love how clean and communicative and just. effective your lines are... The Mule's expression kind of fond and vacant and Pritcher's mouth straight but still kind of bewildered and weary and just-barely-miserable aauuuughhh. The air of noncomprehension, both internally and between them, the absolute faith, ahhhghhdf. I'm so honored, this is wonderful, you're everything, they make me feel fucking crazy aahhahahhhhhhh!!! !!! !! The silhouettes wauuughdfdjfhkhdfhk!!!!
(Also, I've said it before, but the gratitude is always fresh, so thank you also for enjoying my prose :') )

I've been having Thoughts about the Mule and Pritcher post-Second-Foundation lately because of @hazeism, so I had to draw something for their fic 'You've been praying with dirty fingers. It's a wonder you can pray at all.', aka my favourite Foundation fic rn - it's so beautifully written TwT

hi!! wanted to ask if you have any favorite books, either that you've read recently or of all time. Your prose is insane and I need to broaden my own vocabulary so if you have any book recs, fiction or nonfiction, I'd love to know :')
Hii :D ! ahaha, what a well-timed question; lately I've become the kind of guy who just really wants to talk about what people are reading, or are planning to read, and responding in kind, so thanks for giving me an opportunity to indulge that, haha. What a wicked invention the printing press was!!! (Also--thank you!! I'm glad my prose is to your taste. I'm happy !💕)
If you don't mind, I'll put a cut on this right away, because I know I'm very talkative, but let me put a TLDR above for all the novels/authors I mention here. Disclaimer also that I am kind of a dunce (I think you know this) so I like silly shit a lot of times . please be nice to me adfhbjkdg. :D
(No nonfiction also because I'm a frivolous and unworldly little sprite or something but if you want straight philosophy [which counts] come back and I'll do my Top Ten Epic Platonic Dialogues Compilation for you .)
TLDR: Read any UKLG you get your hands on, Cain by Jose Saramago, or any Saramago (though maybe not Skylight, which is not a good introduction to Saramago), very much enjoyed Sartre's The Age of Reason recently, Shadow & Claw or The Fifth Head of Cerberus by Gene Wolfe. If you feel like it, come off anon and tell me what you like, so I can give more tailored recommendations!!
Now if you're asking for favorites, like just the particular and arbitrary objects of my partiality, that stir my stupid little heart, the true answer is probably UKLG's The Farthest Shore, just because it is very special to me. I can't, of course, in good conscience, recommend the third novel of a six-novel fantasy series to someone (but of course read Le Guin, everyone should be reading Le Guin, it's dire for universal soteriology that we all read Le Guin; You'll probably get told to start with Left Hand of Darkness, and that's pretty solid. I liked The Lathe of Heaven as well. And if you read any Le Guin it doesn't hurt to pick up a copy of the Tao. I love the Tao man.)
Some friendlier recommendations, though:
José Saramago is someone I really consider peerless; There's no way to pick up a Saramago and not know who's written it. Cain is a bit drier, a bit more abrasive (almost accusatory, in that particular way you'll find in a Buddhist parable) and bleak than some other Saramagos, but it's one I like (perhaps for the trite reason that I like bucolic atmospheres and Classical antiquity as a setting) so it's the one I'll put forward.
Uhh, I've also been enjoying Sartre's Roads to Freedom lately, starting with The Age Of Reason. I'm partway through the second novel and umm... despite all the other things you could say about Sartre, lmfao, let it not be said that he is not a serious literary force. Serious is maybe the only word for it. Dire, too. I keep a commonplace book, so usually I take excerpts, but this was the first time in memory that I felt compelled to commit entire pages, ahah (I just took pictures though, fuck copying all that).
If you're itching for esoteric language, Shadow of the Torturer (as usually collected with Claw of the Conciliator in a single omnibus edition titled Shadow & Claw; the first of the give-or-take five volume Urth series) by Gene Wolfe will scratch you BLOODY. If you're particularly fussy, you might be irritated by your compulsion to Google, but I find it really makes the experience when you type in a word and the only results are "what the fuck did Gene Wolfe mean by this?" hahaha; Honestly, though, those kinds of complaints are borne from a lack of immersion, but you'll notice pretty quickly that the verbiage is a pretty crucial vehicle OF the immersion.
It may or may not become a commitment, though, if you like Urth enough to want to read through, so if you want Wolfe without the strings--though less of the exciting vocabulary, which is pretty necessarily constrained to Urth--I'd really highly recommend The Fifth Head of Cerberus (the novella OR the novel, I mean the former is volumized in the latter so just start it and if you feel like stopping then stop, haha). Mr. Terminal E is incredible but I scrape enough time out of my daily life to gush about his crazy literary density so I won't do it again here (you should ask my coworker, lmfao, who one time went "stop, hold on, hold on." because my face started getting really red while I was explaining to him some Wolfean gesture). If you read any Wolfe, and I mean ANY Wolfe, because his permatypes and his manipulations of them are endlessly interesting, feel free to come back and chat with me over it!!!
I guess I have to disclaim that my habit is mostly to pick through an author's corpus over a course of, usually, a couple years, and then sometimes I'll read things that will inform my understanding of the genre conventions or currents that the author is writing in (been enjoying Golden Age sci-fi recently)--it's not really as deliberate of a process as it sounds, but I think if you were to map my habits, that's the landscape of it. This means, though, that my reading is actually pretty narrow in scope, and I am not very well read or very knowledgeable in general (who is, in this economy) but it does mean that of the authors I do like, I can probably find the novel that'll work best for your taste.
If you want to come off anon, or I guess just leave another message, haha, (or if someone else wants to, idgaf, we're all friends here at tumblr user hazeism) describing the things you like or look for in a novel I can probably give you a more relevant recommendation. I've been dosing people up a lot lately tbh, it's like a parlor trick I've been doing; I have a conversation with someone and afterwards they'll have a PDF with a relevant Asimov story in their messages, hahaha. I can't help myself sometimes.
Come back anyway, though, if you read anything I talked about, okay? I want to hear about it 🥺
And alsooo (turning to face the audience) if anyone ever wants to put recs in my inbox (or my dms : ) slow replies though sorry I'm a hermit) I'd be happy to take 'em down. Can't guarantee I'll read them in a timely manner, or that you'll ever find out if/when I do, but it's good for me to leave my comfort zone.
#also not what you asked but a thing that i find always pertinent is the fact that synonyms are a scam#no two words ''mean'' and by mean I mean Convey Meaning Serve Function Perform Their Obligations In Continuity Or Discontinuity etc the sam#thing. if two words meant the same thing they would be the same word and even that's a bit of a trap (though i guess there is allure in the#potential scenario in which you are able to so precisely construct the surrounding matter of a sentence that you can get a word to repeat#its exact sensibility when being reused--usually when you are reusing a word you are manipulating it to throw light into an alternate facet#i think maybe it seems like i have an extensive vocabulary (i can't say if I do or not) because I trot out all manner of words in all manne#of contexts. under that pretense. or maybe I am a douchebag who wants to live in the world of forms who knows#sorry for all my me btw your first mistake though was looking at me and going Yeah I bet he has both a meaningful answer AND the ability to#convey it. like no sorry. you'll have to pick through the charnel field again. one million words curse#anonymous#ask#mine#bet you were waiting for me to tell you to read asimov well no. don't feel compelled to do that. i mean don't let me stop you (at the momen#I need them to live so I won't judge you but dhfkudh) i mean if you're currently in a place where reading is difficult (we'veall been there#then his mission of clarity makes his books sublimely digestible impossibly easy to read they're comfortable novels without being totally#unstimulating andthey can in fact be very stimulating if you give them the room to proliferate in your brain . but the thing about asimov i#the best things I find are Daneel (who is a scam and will ruin your life) and HIS PERMATYPEESS guys I love permatypes lately but it's hard#to get the texture of the Asimovian permatypes (muttering about the continuum from fisher through terens) and really luxuriate in them unle#ss you read one fucking million novels . so if you feel like doing that do it but if you don't. don't.#i've been getting so many asks lately (i mean. three. but before that another three!) and it's ruining my icy and aloof image . because i a#a motormouth. and now I'm going to stop typing!!!!!!!!!

Hi!! Since pocketwei just recommended a bunch of your fics, I just wanted to tell you that I think you're the gold standard of dofuwani and mishanks on AO3. Actual inspiration. I need to sit down and devote a day to commenting on your fics because I've read most of them and your writing lives in my head rent free.
AOADFDUKIDUFLJ ??!!!! HOW DO I EVEN RESPOND TO THIS AAAHHA. "the gold standard" aahhadufdgu what the hell, dudedfkdufj. Thank you thank you!!
Tumblr media
^^ Live Haze Reaction
Please don't feel like you have to leave any comments or anything, it already means the world to me that you took the time to read my writing, and be so fair and generous with it, (eyes glazing over, maniacal air) bringing it to life inside of you by considering it and letting yourself think about it (normal again), aaaahhaa it makes me so sentimental. We are alive !!!!
That said, of course, I'd be happy to hear anything you want to share in the form of a comment (getting the emaail is like a syringe to the spine for me), but don't overthink it or feel pressured to comment on everything or share in utter Platonic eloquence, blah blah. Just whatever you feel like saying, long or short, critical or flattering, observational or analytical or reactive, or even just an emoticon, it's all good!
(I suppose, too, it doesn't really matter whether you'd like to share them with me in particular--sometimes it's nice to give fixed form to your thoughts, and know they're worth that effort, so there's your explicit permission to simply use my comment sections as a medium to prove you exist, haha.)
but um. tldr. thank you! one million kisses.

hii do you perhaps have any dofuwani fics recommendation. I've checked out the the ao3 but I really don't seem to like anything there after scrolling thru the most kudos'd works... I feel like you (and a few other artists) get them and I wanted to read things in a similar tone as your art and so far I'm in the trenches bleeding out. like obviously no offense to any of the writers it's just that all the like modern highschool loving dad croc and etc aus are not for me... OTL I hope I'm not sounding rude and thank you for your time!
oh anon come rest your head upon my bosom.... I got you anon..... as a fellow slave to canon-compliance I, too, know the pain of sifting through pages upon pages of AUs, not that there's anything wrong with them but I just can't imagine these sickos working a 9 to 5 in a suit...... thank you for thinking my vision of dofuwani is trust-worthy, this is vain on my part but it genuinely means a lot <3 OK rant over here are the goods, in no particular order (always mind the tags but I figure if you asked me for dfwn sacred texts you're probably a fellow sicko):
that was now and this is then. by ghostwit (M): one of my favourite ever, perhaps even my favourite. About a long relationship, about twisting each other inside the skin, about being formative to each other in ways so deep and intertwined that they can't seem to tear one apart from the other. And despite it all* (*the murders and the hatred and the irreconciliable flaws and differences of their Ego (philosophical) and the unbearable, unacceptable vulnerability of understanding), they are, somehow, unforgivably and incomprehensibly, in love. *smashes head against pavement, it cracks open like an egg, spilling millions of dofuwani thoughts everywhere
no better irony by ghostwit (E): shichibukai meeting sidequest...... excellent characterisation like everything Haze writes (it's just The Best dofuwani there is..... read everything he wrote please). I'm so fond of them in that fic in a way that's like. watching stick bugs in a terrarium. You don't understand them and they don't understand you but you're just happy they're having fun. You wouldn't join in for anything in the world though.
like i need a gaping headwound by ghostwit (M): loguetown era dfwn, Haze back at it with formative years and the fresh sprouts of insanity in these two. So so so good.
nothing in this world that's quite prescribable by ghostwit (T): the opening of this fic is perhaps one of my favourite scenes ever. Vulnerability and odd transparence that only drunken inhibition allows. Which is rare for these two. Absolutely adore this one.
honestly you can and should read everything Haze has written for these two they're just so AUGHHHHHH
black & bloody & rotten & perfect by revolvermonkcelot (M): perfect capture of the fine line between (????love, perhaps) and insanity they walk on. Absolutely fucking insane about this one, the reverence and sacrality of their whole thing, the Indulgence:tm: and permission that can be revoked (for Crocodile is mercurial in his vulnerability), but that is somehow maintained in a delicate and incomprehensible equilibrium. + absolutely incredible undertones of wani (trans)identity crisis, the imperceptible yet meaningful and constant change of the Form... Head in hands
Just a taste by marimoes (M): perfect perfect perfect characterisation, little gestures that betray familiarity. Perfect on all accounts
Swallow by revolvermonkcelot (M): my roman empire. Absolutely perfect Wani characterisation, it's The Wani for me. Exploits perfectly the essential dfwn dichotomy of "one entity tumbling down and the other rising up, meeting halfway through in the eye of the storm, in a singular moment". Classy cannibalism that ties to the no-less essential concept of consumption, to be/become whole again. The reason why they somehow stick together is because of this primordial longing for something, for understanding perhaps, for beauty sometimes, for belonging. Fcuking hell I love them so mucj
A Bird and His Cage by doctornemesis (E): read this one a long time ago but it's in my bookmarks so I trust past me's judgment and tell you it's amazing
From Dressrosa with Love by Sibilans (E, on-going): incredible atmosphere, perfectly depicts the post-golden age rotting glamour of Dressrosa. They are particularly unhinged in this one.
i wanna hurt you just to hear you screaming my name by stealth-black-leg (Kiir_Bee) (E): I'm running out of steam for long meaningful comments but this one has top tier characterisation.
That's it!! Don't forget to comment and leave kudos to give writers the love they deserve <3

12 19 and 25 for the AO3 wrapped :D
12. How many wip's do you have in your docs for next year?
Oohh!! How would I even begin to count, haha? I keep a really loose checklist and I also have a (discord channel lmfao in a server that only I'm in) where I keep ideas but I've got so much shit sitting around that's just like. 300 random words of prose. I suppose I could count the documents that don't have the (completed) tag on them... My checklist is at sixty-two, so that's a number I can give you, haha.
19. What’s one pairing you want to explore next year?
OUHH part of me wanted someone to ask this and part of me didn't want to open this door but AHHAHAH (okay I'm unsound you have to forgive me in advance for being an unsound and deranged person with an unquiet soul okay?) basically I've been scrawling this out thematically over various inboxes but mostly to myself but ... okay (embarrassed suddenly) h-hober mallow dies lonely and wanting and unfulfilled and maybe even embittered at the ineffectualness of his interpersonal maneuvers ("Galaxy, he hates me.") and some (eighty? my math is loose) years later Bel Riose rises on the interstellar scene to no archetypal, intellectual, etc. equal, and feels himself a thing with a pulse and a purpose ("You are trying to say I am a silly robot...") in a world of inert subjects animated by the random motion of psychohistorical necessity from which no significant or distinguishing ego arises... listen Ike doesn't care about these people but I DO and to say that they NEED each other is an UNDERSTATEMENT. Do you understand where I'm going with this? Do you understand? Listen The General and The Trader Princes were respectively the weakest (most wanting) sections of their respective novels; to synthesize them would be a task suited for perhaps an adolescent (saying this to make himself more likely to commit to rereading and rewriting so fucking much of these novels) (he's already like 6k words deep but most of it is them quipping, them fucking, surgeries under dubious consent, and bel riose being nobly starved to the brink of death under Imperial escort HAHAHAHA. aaaah. ah 😐).
25. Did you receive any gifts this year?
Nothing written, noo, but an incrrrredible amount of art inspired by my fic (which has never happened before this year ahdkfdhj) (and I think that's close enough to a gift! they r treasures to me.) look look LOOK LOOK i'm going to melt i'm going to deconstitute i'm not a person i never was ohhmfygfuildohfldifl 😭😭😭😭 trying to compose myself but it's so hard when I'm a non-Newtonian fluid and not a man not even a little bit AAOUAHDSHKFJDLS!!!
(And I skipped secret santa this year because I was in full hermit mode which kinda sucked of me because that's always fun :'( but hopefully lots of opportunities in the coming year to be generous and friendly instead of reclusive and crazy.)
And I suppose it's not what the question is asking, but I also made a lot of new friends [if you think i'm talking about you i am hi i love you i'm sorry for being evil], and spent a lot of time with old friends, who privilege me terribly and awesome (archaic) with their time and attention and even their affection, which is a precious gift 2 me :)
Questions here if you want 2 send more :')

3, 29, or 30! for the writers wrapped
3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?
Hmm, I was pretty happy with this (x) one, and that happened to get a pretty warm reception in terms of statistics. These three (x, x, x) I really enjoyed conceptually and I'm just happy that I found the time to write them. The first one I'm especially attached to, so much so that it may end up getting rewritten (I always say this, but those rewrites never materialize, haha... I just hate closing doors.)
I liked the first half or so of this (x) one a whole lot too : ) I'll stop looking now, haha, because the more I dig the more ambivalences surface.
29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?
Oh, this is hard! I feel like I had a lot of lines I was happy with, and they'd probably be easier to pick hot off the presses. I got really into gastronomic writing this year, so maybe some of that? Cop-out (never beating the evading vanity to become a lotus flower accusations), but maybe I'll reblog this to stick some on if I come across anything that really strikes me.
30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?
WELL I suppose the pivot from shonen to Golden age sci-fi??!!? shshfgdfhg. Like I'm still here I'm still everywhere I never leave and I never disavow something I love (the soul is a circle--at least mine is) but omg... quite the distance...
ANOTHER thing is how LONG some of the stuff I managed to put out this year was--I nearly hit 8k on one piece, which really isn't impressive relative to other people's output, but for me it's a lot! It's a good trend, honestly, I'd like to be a person capable of a bit more commitment than I currently am.
Oh, and I managed to write... almost 5k of original fiction this year, squirreled away in my docs? Maybe that's a surprise--I think most people start with original fiction and move into fanfiction, but I'm umm an empty and museless machine who's mortified by the prospect of it and is really designed for writing expository prose. But I managed that a little bit. Very shocking to me.
Questions here if you want to send more!

17. Your favorite character to write this year?
Ohhh! I guess if you go by my ... tendencies... over the past five or so months... I couldn't not say Daneel. Fascinated by him my horrible harangued self-condemning boddhisattva oohh darling come here let me argue you into relief adfhkdj,f.
But for the first half of the year I also had a lot of fun with Shanks and Mihawk--independently, but also in conjunction, haha. Shanks probably wins out a bit over Mihawk because he's got more peripheral things going that interest me, though I think I posted about him less than Hawkeye...
