For the movie asks: 2, 12, 22 ❤
2. an indie film
(literally looked up a list of indie films for this one hgfjkc who even knows what's classed as an indie film anymore?!) anyways... Little Miss Sunshine (2006). possibly not everyone's cup of tea due to its quirkiness and admittedly dark humour, but idk to me it just feels so unbelievably heartwarming and feelgood. i can put it on no matter what mood I’m in, the cast are stellar and it makes me cry every time
12. a film whose main genre is horror/thriller
Black Swan (2010). ooooo baby, this film ~does~ things to me (and no, i’m not taking about that one natalie portman/mila kunis scene!) not to get too personal but this film ticks so many boxes for me; it’s about obsession and mania and that feeling of “maybe i'm actually going crazy”, pushing yourself so hard towards a goal that you end up destroying yourself in the process, and maybe a little bit of disordered eating in there too (tw for all the above i guess if you do end up watching this!) perhaps i’m biased because i love the psychological horror/thriller genre so much, when the human psyche has the potential to be this horrifying and cause such devastation, who needs a killer in a rubber mask?!
22. a film that is a novel/play adaptation
Arrival (2016). it feels disingenuous to hype this up as an adaptation considering i’ve never read the book but i’ll try…. STEP ASIDE DUNE, THIS IS THE BEST THING DENIS VILLENEUVE HAS EVER MADE I KID YOU NOT!! no but for real this film is utterly breathtaking, i’m actually struggling to find words to describe it. plus going in completely blind with no expectations is absolutely the way to do it. pleaseeeee go watch it now if you haven't already 🙏
honourable mention to The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) aka the BEST christmas film of all time and arguably the best dickens adaptation too
send me a number and i'll give you a movie rec

Academy Award Winners for Best Cinematography: 2024 — Hoyte van Hoytema, ASC Oppenheimer (2023) Directed by Christopher Nolan
"With Oppenheimer, the assignment was capturing human faces, but when we look at a human face, it doesn't end at the surface of the face itself. It's also about what we project onto that face. As an audience, when you look into someone's eye, you're wondering, "What is he thinking, or what is she thinking? What's going on in their brain?" You see an expression, but beyond that expression, there can be a plethora of emotions and thoughts, and that was something that we were very interested in. We wanted to be able to look into Oppenheimer's eyes, fly through them, and then turn around 180 degrees and look through his eyes into the world. We really wanted to embrace the power of projection." — Hoyte van Hoytema for A.frame, February 2024

5, 10, 19 :)
5. an animated film
an extremely basic choice but Inside Out (2015). it's hard to say which has had more sway over my mental health in the last decade -- this film or 6 years of private therapy. i just think it's perfect and such an ingenious way of teaching kids (and young adult ashleigh) about emotions as a whole and especially the importance of sadness
10. a film whose main genre is action/adventure
Hero (2002). came for the cast, stayed for the UN👏BE👏LIEV👏ABLE👏 production design and martial arts. an absolute must-see of the wuxia genre and of chinese cinema in general
19. a film that is a documentary/video essay
What Happened, Miss Simone? (2015). to be clear, there's nothing novel or groundbreaking about this film. it just takes the typical documentary formula and does it reallyyyyy flipping well. nina simone's story is incredibly powerful and so moving, the respect i have for that woman is unparalled
honourable mention to Navalny (2022) in light of alexei navalny's recent death murder. it follows the aftermath of the last time putin made an attempt on his life.... didn't stop the bastard from trying again

Movie ask: 8 & 11?
8. a film from the year you were born
Scream (1996). i only saw this for the first time a few years ago but oooo there's just something about it. i'm a hugeeee horror fan and i genuinely think it's one of the best in the genre
11. a film whose main genre is comedy
on the flip side, comedy is unfortunately my least favourite movie genre..... that being said, Some Like It Hot (1959) is an absolute work of art and made me laugh so hard i fell of the couch
send me a number and i'll give you a movie rec
