okay okay I've got this random scene stuck in my head from completely outta the blue and it's juicy and sad BUT!!!

some kind of romance with a scene where a woman's pining for some guy and they're walking out of a party or something and she's finally worked up the nerve to ask him if he wants to go get a drink or dinner with her or something, but he tells her he's already got plans and points over his shoulder at where her sister is standing (maybe there's a history of her sister stealing guys she likes or something) and she's just a little heartbroken, watching the guy she really likes head off with her sister

and meanwhile, the guy who's been pining over her is just watching, feeling his own heart break for her because she looks so sad and heartbroken and he wishes he could make it all better for her but he can't because she doesn't like him that way, he can't just swoop in and offer himself up as a substitute date!

and then eventually they get a happily ever after together or something idk. the scene is just stuck in my head and I had to get it out lol

I do sort of wish western anime fans would analyze anime and manga from a framework of japanese historical and cultural context. Specifically a lot of works from the 90s being influenced by the general aimlessness and ennui that a lot of people were experiencing due to the burst in the bubble economy and the national trauma caused by the sarin terrorist attack. I think in interacting with media that’s not local to our sociocultural/sociopolitical sphere it’s easy to forget that it’s influenced and shaped by the same kinds of factors that influence media within our own cultural dome and there ends up being this baseline misalignment of perception between the causative elements of a narrative and viewer interpretation of those elements. It’s a form of death of the author that i think, in some measure, hinders our ability to fully understand/come to terms with creator intent and the full scope of a work’s merits
