Historian of late medieval art here: there is another interpretation of the Mérode Altarpiece that I have seen more often than this sexual analysis though. Joseph is creating a mousetrap, which st Augustine uses three times in his Sermons as a metaphor for the role Jesus will play once he is born: he will trap and defeat Satan just like a man traps a mouse. This analysis was brought by Meyer Schapiro and Erwin Panofsky in particular, and led later to an over-analysis and over-interpretation of these huge Altarpieces and more broadly of all the works of this group of painters we traditionally called "Flemish Primitives".

So... yeah for the "funny" interpretation and maybe Campin had it in mind whilst painting it but there are more interesting things to read in this painting :)

i have a folder organized by author's last name and another folder that sort of mirrors the first one with the notes I took while reading the articles, and that are also organized by author's last name. I think it is more logical and looks like a real library.

On Zotero I use tags to have thematic selections though!

Academics, how do you organise your saved articles? I'm debating between just having them all in a folder organised by author's last name and arranging them into themed folders (but a lot of them cross topics so it's difficult...)

In case French references can help you, there is a nice historiographical assessment about violence and social regulation: Laure Verdon, “Violence, norme et régulation sociale au Moyen Âge. Essai de bilan historiographique”, Rives méditerranéennes, 2011, p. 11-25. It deals with legal, social and emotional aspects, so maybe it is worth reading, at least for the bibliography!
