Choking On Love
He stares at her. She doesn't look at him.
"Why?" "Because you're killing me." "What?" "Yeah, I guessed you didn't know."
Her laugh sounds humourless. He feels his eyes starting to burn.
"You're choking the life out of me every time you don't come home. Every time I get a text from your best friend saying that you're too drunk to come back. Every time I smell her perfume on you!"
She rips her wrist from his grip. He feels numb.
"Babe-" "Don't call me that! We're over! I tried, Fynn! I tried so hard because I fucking love you! But you don't seem to love me - at least not enough for you to come home at night."
She picks up her bag. The bag has been packed for months. The bag means it's real this time.
The tears roll down his face.
"Julia..." "I hope you'll find whatever you need to finally settle down. But it isn't me because I'm done." "Please, I-"
She lays a finger on his lips to shut him up. Her eyes shine with unshed tears.
"No, Fynn. You promised to change. You never did and I can't keep the smile up. It chokes me a little more each time and I really don't want it to suffocate me."
He feels helpless. Like the ground is slipping away under his feet. Yeah, she pulled the rug alright...
"Julia."
She smiles. It's not exactly sad. It's resigned. It's like she can breathe easier again.
"Bye, Fynn. I'll text you sometime."
Then the door closes behind her. And he chokes on her name in his throat.

Why are we thinking about voyages to other planets when we can't even tackle our social problems? Is it a coping mechanism or trying to escape reality?
