Tolkien OC Week
A fandom event for OCs and underdeveloped characters in Tolkien's world!
This event celebrates both characters of Tolkien's world and our own characters that need more love, by creating and reblogging all kind of fanworks, like fanfiction, fanart, fanvideos, fancrafts, headcanons, playlists, edits, moodboards etc.
The event is modded by @yellow-faerie, @elamarth-calmagol and @stormxpadme and will take place between 21st August - 27th August 2023 for the third year running.
NSFW text entries are allowed and we’ll tag them accordingly when we reblog them, but please put them behind a “read more”.
We'll also be tracking the tag #tolkienocweek during this week!

Event schedule for 2023:
Day 1 (21st August): Family members
Tolkien often neglects to mention the family members of major characters: for example, leaving both Celebrimbor and Fili and Kili with only one named parent. In others cases, such as Bilbo's family tree, he gives a name and nothing else. Share a character who fills in a gap in a family tree, or create a speculative family member, such as siblings for Legolas.
Day 2 (22nd August): The Bad Guys
Share an OC who belongs to the wrong side of the story, whether they're knowingly evil, misguided, or just doing their job. Maybe they're an orc or a balrog, an unrepentant kinslayer, a Southron or Easterling soldier, or one of the hobbits who worked with Saruman in the Shire. Explore their life and point of view and why they went down the path they did.
Day 3 (23rd August): Diversity
Share an OC who adds diversity to Tolkien’s world, whether it is their race, gender, disability, neurodiversity, sexual orientation, or another characteristic.
Day 4 (24th August): Forgotten Characters
As Tolkien created his stories, he abandoned some characters, such as Eriol the Mariner, and changed major characteristics of others, such as the idea that Erestor was a half-elven relative of Elrond. Other characters, such as the Dunedain chieftains fostered by Elrond before Aragorn, are forgotten by the fandom. Create a fanwork focusing on one of these forgotten characters or characterizations.
Day 5 (25th August): Shipping
Share an OC that you ship with a canon character. It could be a marriage, queerplatonic relationship, or one-night stand, canon compliant or AU, or any other sort of ship you want!
Day 6 (26th August): Alternate Universes
Share an OC who couldn’t be part of the canonical story, such as Boromir's child in an "everyone lives" scenario, a roommate or professor in a college AU, or a dimension-hopping "tenth walker".
Day 7 (27th August): Freeform
Did you have someone who doesn’t fit any prompts, or too many characters for one of them? Today, share any OC that you want.

Since we want to celebrate creations about neglected characters all year long, the mods will occasionally reblog posts and fancreations about OCs and underdeveloped characters. If you would like to see your post on our blog, you're very welcome to tag tolkienocweek. Since tumblr's tagging system is often being faulty, don't hesitate to message us, too!
We are looking forward to see and share all the awesome work you come up with!

Note
⭐️ for the night before the morning after :)
The Night Before The Morning After was written for this year's @gondolinweek but of course that is not really the 'why' of it.
My first foray into Maeglin was an AU I wrote for last year's @tolkienrsb as a treat: Fate I Hold Tight In My Fist. The focus of the fic was Aredhel, but almost as soon as I started writing it, Maeglin and Celebrimbor became very strong characters in it. It was not outright slash, but could very easily be read as a lead up to a later relationship (though I wrote it as just a very close familial bond).
So this became my first proper Celebrimbor/Maeglin fic, but it draws on some backstory I have in my mind for where Celebrimbor goes in the later First Age.
We know he was at Nargothrond when Celegorm and Curufin were kicked out (and honestly I love Orodreth/Celebrimbor), but I know there is a version of the legendarium that has *a* Celebrimbor in Gondolin. I don't think Tolkien thought they were the same character even, but I wanted to think about how it would have come about if it was.
I like the idea that even for having repudiated his father, Celebrimbor did not really denounce his Feanorian house or name, so he went with Gwindor to the Union out of what he felt was a duty to be there.
Of course the Union ends disastrously and pretty much everyone left alive at the end of it on the Western front ends up going with Turgon back to Gondolin - so that's how I like to imagine he ends up there.
In this case, of course, he has never met Maeglin, but he knows about him since the Silm seems to indicate Curufin knew who Eol was and that he'd taken Aredhel as wife, even if it never explains how that information got out.
Given that both of their fathers were close with the Dwarves and they were both smiths it gives a pretty solid base for them to build on.
It did give me a chance to get into Maeglin's head again, which was fun. Poor kid - yes I know he goes onto commit his own war crimes but that doesn't actually negate the depth of the tragedies he experienced (any more than those tragedies excuse his war crimes).
And anyway, at this point in the story, he hasn't done them so...
Thank you for the ask! I'm not even sure if I actually answered the qeustion, if you have anything else you want to know feel free to request a follow-up 🥰

Gondolin, Post-Nirnaeth Arnoediad, Not Quite Angst, Not Quite Fluff, and A Particularly Colorful Curse in Khuzdul
Maeglin became keenly aware of Celebrimbor’s presence  shortly after they had fled the disastrous Union and returned to  Gondolin with the remnant of Fingon’s armies.
And, if he was entirely honest, the beauty of the Elf did not hinder his notice.

@gondolinweek day seven | freeform | elemmakil & the dark guard
Now Aredhel and Maeglin came to the Outer Gate of Gondolin and the Dark Guard under the mountains; and there she was received with joy, and passing through the Seven Gates she came with Maeglin to Turgon upon Amon Gwareth.
—The Silmarillion
And Elemmakil, captain of the Guard, who bore the bright lamp, looked long and closely at them.

Bells and Drum
For @gondolinweek
Thank you for the beautiful prompt posts!
Characters: Salgant, OFC.
No warnings. The feast of Tarnin Austa referred to is not Gondolin's last Tarnin Austa.
‘Listen,’ Salgant remembers Solosimpe saying.
She walked over and settled herself in front of the big drum. She started slowly. Ta-dum-ta. And then she worked up the sound, louder and faster, until it rose in a big wave that filled the room and Salgant’s head. It lifted him up. He wanted to move. He wanted to dance, jump, do great things. Yes, even he, Salgant—the small deprecatory voice in the back of his back was drowned out by the sound of the beating drum. Then the wave receded again, slowed. The room was silent, although Salgant’s thoughts were still reverberating with the last of the drum beat.
‘Now, listen again,’ said Solosimpe.
She walked over to the wall where there was an arrangement of gongs and bells. Starting with a gentle touch, she produced an entirely different sound. It swelled out gradually, unhurriedly from under her fingers, but continued to unfold, a slow solemn sequence of sounds that calmed and seemed to open up spaces in Salgant’s head, settling him back in his skin and clearing his eyes. He noticed the way the light was falling into the room.
‘Wonderful,’ he said reverently. ‘I thought your instrument was the flute!’
‘Thank you,’ said Solosimpe. ‘I was not trying to impress you, though! There are others here that can play these better than I. I was trying to demonstrate the difference between the moods, how music can match itself to what the occasion offers and enhance it. You knew that already, of course, and you can do both on any instrument, including the flute, including your harp. But it is easier to hear the difference on the drum and the bells.’
Gently, thinks Salgant, playing his harp on the morning of Tarnin Austa, letting his harp notes ring out softly. It is time for the bells now.
Later today, it will be time for the drum.

@gondolinweek day seven | freeform | meleth and hendor
And that child was in tears for the strange lights of red that played about the walls of the chamber where he slept; and tales that his nurse Meleth had woven him concerning fiery Melko at times of his waywardness came to him and troubled him.
…and the child was upon the shoulders of one Hendor, a housecarle of Idril’s, and he seemed like to be left with his burden.

@gondolinweek day five | glorfindel and pengolodh
Pengolodh dropped his scrolls abruptly, his mouth falling open in astonishment. He’d thought he’d survived the sack of Eregion and made it safely to Imladris—but to see this elf before him… Had he died after all? Was Imladris only a vision of Mandos?
“Laurefindil?” he gasped, for surely the gold-gleaming lord before him was none other than the Captain of the Golden Flower, whom he had seen fall into the abyss with his own eyes.
Laurefindil beamed. “Quendingoldo!” he cried. “How good it is to see you!”
“Are I—are we dead?” Pengolodh croaked. If it was so, his chief regret was his failure to preserve the histories he had attempted to rescue from the burning of the library of Ost-in-Edhil. So much work, so much destroyed—and even his meager efforts had been in vain…
But Laurefindil only laughed, bending down to retrieve Pengolodh’s scrolls.
“Nay,” he assured. “You live—and I live again! The Valar are merciful, Quendingolod, and they have sent aid to Middle-earth in the form of…well, me!”
Heedless of his precious manuscripts, Pengolodh burst into tears and embraced his fellow exile of Gondolin.
“Praise to the Powers!” he wept. “Aurë entuluva! Ondolindë will rise again!”
