I definitely remember this and I feel compelled to add that the monument that currently holds Dante's remains in Ravenna, built in 1780, is notoriously ugly (it's been nicknamed 'the sugar bowl' among other things, you can see it here. For comparison, this is the church where he was buried originally) as well as pretty difficult to find if you don't already know where it is located. Which imho makes the whole thing even funnier

today I learned that in 2008, the city council of florence overturned dante’s sentence of execution if he returned from exile. yes, dante’s inferno dante, who died in 1321.

but the funniest part of this is not that they were debating the exile of a man who has been dead for over 500 years.

the funniest part is that the vote was 19-5. five people voted to uphold dante’s exile.

I'm a lazy asshole as a baseline but if I have a crush on someone I'm willing to do a lot of things for them. the downside is that I think I never really actually 'loved' learning for its own sake but rather only as the means to the end of getting the approval of a specific person

I didn't know he was a mythologist at all, let alone that he was infamous for positing a "universal" narrative structure that reduces a variety of works and storytelling traditions to variations on a single Jungian theme regardless of whether their actual contents line up with his thesis.
