I decided to play Dragon's Dogma as Sel, because I remembered how mage just... sucked a bit to actually play in the original game. And then i picked a canon compliant pawn with Emma.... rather than kinda reversing the roles I played in the first game (Zah and Sel - who DID know each other in canon back then, and now Do Not)

In canon- Sel has grown up a Loner. And spent a lot of time feeling very ostracised from his peers. Hes not exactly used to people being genuinely nice to him? THEN he gets a nice healthy dose of ~TRAUMA~ - seeing everyone he does care about be killed horribly, his home torched and then imprisoned/ tortured for Fun

.... Followed by waking up in a place of healing. With people genuinely trying to look after him, make sure hes healthy and well and generally okay. They listen to him about what hes gone through, try and accommodate his requests (even if it makes the healthcare a little harder) and just generally act Very Nice to a Complete Stranger?? And this is a guy whose brain is very much Soup, with all its chemistry trying to work out what the hell its doing.

So hes kinda generally Very Protective of the people who are nice to him? Hes already lost a few once, he doesnt want to again But also.... the nice doctor lady around his age? 🥺

And then just taking this sort of base idea and then throwing over the Arisen/ Pawn dynamic.......

I havent quite thought much on Sels backstory here, because I dunno what the games going to throw at me. But i cant see it being MUCH different? Hell, hes even being thrown in jail for absolutely nothing once more!

But now the loner guy is being told to summon HIS pawn? What kind of lil buddy do you want, huh?? And i dont really think he has any idea WHO he wants - just someone to look after him? Like his brain is soup once more - he has no memories, no idea what hes supposed to be doing. Just knows he was in prison and now here? So he ends up with... a healer mage lady. Someone whose always by his side on this adventure hes kinda been forced on? Someone who picks him up when some beastie has flattened him. Tends to his wounds. Gives him magic shields. Compliments his battle prowess when they emerge victorious. HI FIVES HIM??? LITERALLY GRABS HIM IF HE FALLS FROM TOO GREAT A HEIGHT AND SHES THERE.

He would literally die for her.

Shes there to make sure he doesnt die. But he still would.

But also.... what do you do when your favourite person is kinda.... not a person? Pawns are supposed to be relatively unfeeling, mostly just getting on with what theyve been tasked to do - or serving an Arisen (if there is one). You want this person to stop calling you "master", and to treat you as a friend and equal. But they literally cant, its not in their nature

The total sum of everything you've lived so far, from birth, childhood, every single school year.... discovering who you are, finding your place in the world..... all of that time is ahead of you.

.... Only this time, your life barely changes. Youre just At Work. 8 hours a day. 5 days a week...... for the equivalent time of every day you've lived so far........

#am i making sense? IDK #sometimes i just think about the fact ive been working for nearly 11 years #and i still have MY ENTIRE LIFE SO FAR to go #and i already feel Tired of it #i do not want to labour away for the equivalent of everything ive lived so far

Playing viddy james in your lunch break seems like a good idea

You can't get a HUGE amount done, but you can make some progress after all

...... Because you're going to spend the remainder of your work day thinking about nothing other than putting your little dolls in the viddy jame world and playing with them.......

WHEN do they go to other worlds? do they just leave their arisen for days at a time?) #most importantly.... how have the guards not noticed some pawns standing outside this one tiny house for hours at a time #as someone sleeps inside..... #why are these pawns so dedicated to this guy huh???

If i might Dragons Dogma diary a bit here:

I've largely been ignoring the main story, mostly because I dont want to get too Into It before I'm dragged away from the game for a week. So I've just been exploring around, gathering side quests and ticking them off one by one. Like, i got the coronation as my next main quest. I've had that for quite some hours now.

The other day, I found a pathway into Battahl that just... totally bypassed the checkpoint. But the enemies absolutely brutalised me, so I geared myself up. Got 2 portcrystals ready - one for when I got INTO Battahl, and one for if i needed to bail half way through the journey.

And my second attempt was successful! I am now in Battahl! The pathway even drops you off in the city itself.

And while i was there, i thought maybe i should mess around with the first hybrid vocation i've gained - the fighter/ mage spear one.

So heres me. 2 skills, level 1 on the vocation. Not knowing what the hell i'm doing. Running around a country with muuucchh stronger enemies.

Just running down paths. Eventually have someone tell me "oh no dont go there, theres a really strong enemy thats like killing everyone there!!" And im like

No im going!! ... with the intention of looking at it and noping right out of there.

.... i didnt even make it to see the big scary monster everyones warning me about (which is probably the medusa-thing from the prologue) I got murdered on the way there by... uhh a lot of different things. They pushed me off a bridge :(

It is maybe not the best idea to go traipsing around parts unknown when you are at the literal lowest level of a vocation! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Going back to work after 3 days of doing very little other than playing Dragons Dogma and i dont think i can understand anything but "defeat beastie"

So if anyone has any tips on how to defeat this boss, I'd appreciate it 🙏

The real danger of having some idea of how mini painting works is knowing I could use Heroforge to make my OCs and obtain tiny little versions of them to paint

#i cant remember the exact price.... #that doesnt even include shipping #i think even the file alone is kinda pricey? #and i only know of 1 place near me with a 3d printer and its ~£6 an hour~ #the other danger is knowing theres d&d minis and the SIREN CALL of DRAGONS #except the company that makes them is NOT transparent about the figures SIZE #and the big dragons (of unknown size) are like £100.....

There's a dragons dogma 2 quest line that only occurs when you are an archer, and it has a pretty good reward

So I swap to archer to go on this quest line. This is not a vocation I want to play

.... So of course a griffin decides to gatecrash a battle with an ogre while im here in my silly little robin hood outfit, barely knowing which end of a bow the arrows should come out of 😔

#however kicking a griffin in the face when it was prone sure was funny

Like, It's A Man is a song where a woman's ranting about behaviour she sees in a lot of men that she dislikes, and warning other women about it. Only to admit that if a man sweeps you off your feet regardless, you should enter a relationship bc it's worth it. Despite the cigars and loud ties.

Maximus is a guy with a whole bunch of dreams and ambitions, to the point where he definitely killed a guy (or at least refused to do first aid) and probably sliced up his best friends leg to achieve them (not confirmed. But seems more likely than not after what he does in episode 2.

About the only line in the song that fits that scene is "WATCH OUT! There's a two legged animal running about!"

.... Which are basically the first lines of the song.

A song about ambition, getting what you always dreamed of, something about The Troops™ or even The American Dream™ would probably have been better fits.

But not as good as just giving Maximus a Theme Tune.

Big moments for characters work better as scores than real music?

The use of music is....bad

It seems like Amazon bulk purchased a bunch of music to use in the series, and are peppering it in in the Most Important Scenes and its Not Working.

Spoilers for episode 2 but:

You have Maximus put on the power armour for the first time. A thing he's dreamed about for most of his life. A thing he just killed a guy for.

And Betty Hutton's It's A Man is playing....

The song lyrics BARELY fit what's happening on screen. The tone is all weird and wrong.

This would have been better suited to a Maximus' Theme? An orchestral piece designed for THAT character. To play at HIS most important character moments.

And, like, I'm a fan of happy, peppy songs over scenes of Over The Top Violence. Something Fallout as a TV series SHOULD be leaning into with it's Period Music. But it feels like they're using the period music to avoid actually writing a decent score for the series?

#idk man i cant sleep or get this song out my head now #i also cant help but think of that one video essay that talks about Shreks banger choice of Real Music #and how the Real Music is almost never used in Important Character Scenes #thats when they move to the orchestral score and the movies Main Theme #i think this essay also mentions Suicide Squad and why its bad and its bc the music is so... cliche #'this character is a bad girl so well play a piece of music with that lyric in it' #compared to 'i dont give a damn about my bad reputation' in a scene where Shrek ABSOLUTELY DOES

I kinda have exactly 1 complaint and it's....

Yeah those power armours look exactly like a guy in cosplay foam.

But it's either that or full CGI, and Amazon do not pay for the good CGI, lol. And I'd much rather a guy in a costume that doesn't quite have the right weight to it than some real janky looking CGI....

#like something just doesnt look Right about some of the amazon shows cgi #nothing feels like it could actually BE in the scene #special effects and backgrounds are fine but characters? bad
