“oh, it-it’s really uh. not.. a big deal.” he’d just told a little white lie to one of the teachers that had caught them both in the halls. they weren’t going to the same place, but all eyes had been on wednesday ever since she started at the school. the least forrest could offer was a lie. saying that he was showing her the way somewhere. and because he was typically quiet, it actually worked. weird how easy it was.

“really! really. it’s not. a debt. i was just uh. trying to like. uhm. h-help? selflessly. with-without uh. need for a re-reward. or debt. really.”

a stray line of blue paint is almost immediately obvious to forrest, though, he simply smiles. it had taken some time, but he’s finally convinced syl to try painting with him. they’re working on deprecate canvases, forrest have already started working on a painting of a bird. syl seemingly has something entirely else going on.

“looks like the start of a river, to me.” he’s trying to be supportive. art is supposed to be fun, after all. “doesn’t it?”

Forrest shifted a bit uncomfortably in his chair. House calls like this had been Alex’s idea, and he still wasn’t sure how he felt about the whole thing. It was enough of a shock to be believed about the whole ghost thing, but to have someone seeking advice from him? It felt a little wrong. Like lying, even though he wasn’t doing any of that.

“We-Well.” He tugs a little on his collar, glancing around the space. Not only are there no spirits to be found, it also seems way nicer than any home he has been in before. Maybe he should’ve taken Alex’s offer for some fancier clothes. The paint stains on his jeans are really standing out now.

“It’s uh. It could be. A lot of things, uh. Really. The same way that uh, living people are all complex and motivated, uh, spirits are often the same? I mean. Since there. Since they’re just. Passed on. Uhm. Is this… a consistent thing? Like. Does it happen at a certain time? Or a certain… place?”

Kendall wasn’t sure whether he could describe what was happening to him as he sat in the living room of his Montauk house. These were things that didn’t really make logical sense to him and belonged in some other category that he didn’t really believe in. “I guess,” he said to Forrest. “This whole thing started when the doors kept slamming all over my house. My housekeeper Effie and I are the only people who live in this place and we close doors gently, but those doors would slam at night as if some motherfucker was angrily marching through it.”

He scratched his head nervously. “And then, uh, I would sometimes hear noises like a cat scratching around,” he continued. “And all of this stuff has been very bizarre because this house is only ten years old and the last owner was an art collector who didn’t own a cat or have teenagers or anything like that.”

“So,” he said after another pause. “What do you think is going on? Is it the house or the land or…?” He let the rest of the question hang in the air.
