AG, Godfred Dame is “arrogant, vindictive & quick-tempered” – NDC Lawyer fumes
The Director of Legal Affairs of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Abraham Amaliba says the professional conduct of Attorney General and Minister of Justice leaves much to be desired.
He claims Godfred Yeboah Dame is rather acting more in the interest of his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) than working for the state.
“What he is doing as an Attorney General if more of an NPP work than a duty to the state,” he said.
His comment comes after Godfred Yeboah Dame’s assertion that lawyers who attack the courts and judges on social media when judgments are not in their favour, especially with high-profile political cases should be punished.
He described the act of such lawyers are ‘unfortunate’ – adding, that their vicious comments are wrong.
“My Lord Chief Justice, one would have thought that lawyers would have taken advantage of the digital revolution, which I have spoken about this morning, to consolidate the importance of this legal profession and its role in the affairs of the state.
“On the contrary, recent developments disclose systematic attempts by certain lawyers, often belonging to a side of the political divide to deploy social media to denigrate the administration of justice through poisoning and caustic attacks on judgements of the courts, all be it unjustified. This is often worsened in commentary on so-called political cases where some lawyers perceive the outcome to have far-reaching consequences for the objectives of political parties they sympathize with,” Godfred Dame said whiles addressing the bench, bar and faculty conference in Accra on Thursday, April 21.
He added, “the most deplorable thing about such endeavour is that many times their vicious comments are wrong yet the propagators of these wrong and dangerous ideas do not relent in their efforts to push them down the throat of an unsuspecting public. Such disreputable practice on the part of some lawyers further becomes an inducement to persons who are not members of the legal profession to launch even more savage and illogical attacks on the judiciary.
“This conduct is despicable as it has the ultimate tendency to destroy the integrity of institutions of justice delivery in Ghana. Such conducts should result in sanctions inflicted on the lawyers in question,” the A-G added.
But speaking to this, Lawyer Abraham Amaliba said the act of commenting on court rulings has been there from time immemorial.
“Even their lawyers do comment on such cases,” he said on NEAT FM’s morning show, Ghana Montie.
He noted that the move is an attempt to gag NDC lawyers from expressing their sentiments on court-related issues.
To him, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice is running the state office with self-pride, adding that his continuous apparent support for everything the Judiciary does threaten justice delivery in Ghana.
“He is arrogant, vindictive and quick-tempered,” he told host, Akwasi Aboagye.

Minority's quest for an injunction on implementation of E-levy will be an exercise in futility - Majority Leader
The Majority Leader and MP for Suame constituency, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has said the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy ) Act came into operation upon the giving of accent to the bill by the President after its passage by the House.
He explained that structures are being put in place by government towards actual collection of the levy scheduled to commence on 1st May 2022, and preparation towards the collection of the levy forms part of the operationalization of the E-levy Act.
The Majority Leader stated this today at a press conference held by the Majority caucus in Parliament.
He said the E-levy bill was approved by Parliament by a voice vote hence the burden lies on the Minority caucus to prove to the Supreme Court that the approval of the bill by Parliament was illegal.
It would be recalled that the Minority in Parliament recently filed a writ at the Supreme Court seeking to place injunction on the implementation of the E-levy Act.
The Majority Leader therefore said the decision by the Minority to challenge the legality of the approval of the E-levy by Parliament will be an exercise in futility.
Commenting on the referral of three Members of Parliament by the Speaker, Rt Hon Alban Bagbin to the Privileges Committee of Parliament for absenting themselves from Parliament for 15 sitting days, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the recommendations of the Committee on the matter must hold without the need for the whole House to vote on the Committee's recommendations as suggested by the Speaker.

KNUST extends deadline for payment of fees after gov’t intervention
The Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has extended the deadline for the payment of fees for 6,000 deferred students by a month.
In a statement, management of the university said it took the decision following an intervention by the Minister of Education, Yaw Adutwum and other stakeholders.
“The Management of KNUST has agreed to extend the deadline for payment of fees for deferred students by one month following a meeting with the Minister of Education, Hon. Yaw Adutwum, and other stakeholders today, 22nd of April 2022.
“All students who were affected by the deadline of 7th of April 2022 now have up to 20th May 2022 to settle their fees without further delay,” a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar of KNUST, Daniel Norris Bekoe said.
The school urged all affected students to take advantage of the extension to “pay up the approved fees before the commencement of the first semester on the 23rd of May 2022.”
It said students who have genuine financial concerns should contact the Students Loan Trust Fund for support.
Management had earlier announced that students, who could not pay 70% of their fees by Thursday, 7th April 2022, will be automatically deferred.
The Students’ Representative Council of KNUST subsequently said it would engage management of the university to seek an extension of the deadline for students who are yet to pay their fees.

No loan guarantor policy for tertiary students approved – Adutwum
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given approval for the introduction of the no guarantor policy in tertiary institutions to allow students easily access loans for their education, the Minister of Education, Yaw Adutwum has said.
This follows the deferral of over 6,000 students of KNUST over delays in the payment of their fees.
Mr. Adutwum said the move forms part of the government’s efforts at making education more accessible.
“The good news is that Nana Akufo-Addo gave the approval for the establishment of what is called the no guarantor policy which is now the law of the land which means students can apply for loans and be given the money without a guarantor.”
The deferral compelled the Students Representative Council (SRC) to set aside GH¢50,000 to pay part of the fees for a number of students who had paid more than 50 percent of the fees.
Speaking at a meeting with the management of KNUST over the deferral, the Minister commended the SRC for the intervention.
“First of all let me commend the [SRC] leadership for the work that they have done. They were able to support individuals out of their own funds. I am touched by the work of the SRC.”
Mr Adutwum explained that KNUST management had to resort to such harsh measures because their hands were tied.
“You also can understand that the university needs money to run, so I do not think KNUST leadership did this because they wanted students out of here.”
He said the Students Loan Trust Fund will engage in extensive consultation with students “who need support in order to pay their fees.”

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu reacts to Minority’s E-levy case at Supreme Court
The Majority Caucus in Parliament has downplayed the Minority’s decision to seek legal redress over the passage of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy).
The Minority Caucus has already gone to the Supreme Court to fight the passage of the E-levy by the Majority side of Parliament, despite the walkout by Minority MPs.
They subsequently filed an injunction on the implementation of the e-levy pending the final determination of the case.
According to the Majority caucus, the appropriate parliamentary resolution processes were not followed through by the Minority before heading to court.
Addressing journalists, the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu says it behoves on the Minority to provide substantial evidence to their claim.
“The burden of proof lies on the Minority to go to court and prove their case. No Supreme Court anywhere indulges in processes and procedures relating to Parliament. It is the reason why when they took a vote on the supposed rejection of the budget statement, they pushed for a division. They [Minority] pushed themselves into a labyrinth.”
The apex court has scheduled the hearing of the case for May 4, 2022, three days after the planned date for the implementation of the levy.
Parliament passed the bill on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, in the absence of the Minority MPs, who had walked out before the Bill was considered at the second reading stage.
The levy, which was amended from 1.75 percent to 1.5 percent on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, will be a tax on electronic transactions, which includes mobile-money payments.
The charge will apply to electronic transactions that are more than GH¢100 on a daily basis.
Critics of the proposal have warned that this new levy will negatively impact the Fintech space, as well as hurt low-income people and those outside the formal banking sector.

Civil Society group, the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability, ASEPA, has filed a petition against President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over disclosures made in a recent interview by a Ghanaian-Canadian citizen Evelyn Aidoo, alias Serwaa Broni.
The April 21, 2022 petition filed at the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice, CHRAJ, is seeking for an investigation into the role the president allegedly played in an purported staged armed robbery on Serwaa Broni.
The woman, who claims to have had an amorous past with the President alleged in a recent interview that National Security operatives under instructions of the President staged an armed robbery against her seeking to retrieve some private information she had on the president.
According to the petition sighted by GhanaWeb, ASEPA wants among others allegations of abuse of office, human rights abuse, and criminal misconduct alleged by Serwaa Broni to be investigated and therefrom are calling for impeachment processes to be started if need be.
“Among other things ASEPA is requesting CHRAJ to investigate the President on Abuse of Office, Human Rights Violations, and Criminal Misconduct contrary to the Code of Conduct for Public Officers.
“These allegations if proven would be enough grounds to commence impeachment proceedings against the President,” the petition read in part.
ASEPA also listed a number of personalities they wanted to be probed in connection to the Serwaa Broni 'gate' they included; John Boadu, Kennedy Agyapong and Hopeson Adorye.
Already, the Minority in Parliament have issued notice that they are studying portions of the allegations made by Serwaa Broni especially the misuse of National Security while three pro-NDC activists have also formally petitioned Parliament over the disclosures.

Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, Mark Addo says that the Black Stars have been placed in a tricky group in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
Ghana has been placed in group E alongside Angola, Madagascar and Central African Republic for a place at the biennial tournament.
The Black Stars of Ghana have in the last few weeks endured a topsy turvy spell as they failed miserably at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.

36 year-old Teacher perish in ghastly accident
Sylvia Etornam Gbormita, a teacher at the Border Basic School at Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region, has died in what many has described as a freak road accident.
Etornam, as she was popularly called, died on Friday, April 8, 2022, in an accident that left her body parts dismembered in the most bizarre nature.
The 36-year-old Etornam was said to be in the company of her friend, Likem Agbavor 34-year-old who was driving at the time of the accident.
Mr Agbavor, who survived the accident, is said to be recovering after series of surgeries at the Ho Teaching Hospital.
Initial information that spread through the Ketu South Municipality and other parts of the region suggested that she might have been murdered and her body dumped on the road for other vehicles to accidentally mutilate.
However, preliminary investigation by the Police points to a bizarre vehicle accident on the Denu to Tokor portion of the West-African Highway that traverses the Ketu South Municipality into Lome, Togo.
DSP Eric Vondee, the Ketu Divisional Crime officer, who confirmed the incident, explained that the accident happened around 11:00 pm.
Likem is said to have recently returned from the US and had gone to visit Etornam at Tokor.
They went to get food from a popular restaurant in the Denu area and got involved in an accident while returning to Etornam’s residence at Tokor.
DSP Vondee said, the driver after regaining consciousness from Coma, said all he could remember was that a vehicle from the opposite side (Tokor direction) over-took some vehicles towards him.
He remembers veering onto the side of the road only to wake up on a hospital bed.
However, accident scene investigation suggests that the Toyota Corolla indeed veered to the side of the road, grazed the guard rails, and knocked down an electric pole before hitting another guard rail up ahead.
Furthermore, it appears the lady might have fallen out of the vehicle during the course of the accident; leading to other vehicles mutilating the body. The body also appears to have been dragged on the street for about 30 to 40 meters.
The body was deposited at the Ketu South Municipal Hospital Morgue while the driver was rushed to the Ho Teaching Hospital. The vehicle is also damaged beyond repairs.
He also said the latest information from his investigator on the case, G-Cpl Wisdom Kove also indicates that the driver is recuperating after suffering from internal bleeding and injuries which led to some procedures on both ribs and abdomen.
DSP Vondee noted that investigations are still ongoing and that should the driver get better, he will be able to further assist in the investigations.
Etornam, prior to teaching in Aflao, was teaching in Ho, the regional capital.
She was transferred to the Eastern region before finally to Aflao in the Volta Region.
She has close ties with her hometown, Keta and an active alumni of her former school, St Paul’s SHS at Tokor and Amazing Love School in Aflao (Basic level).
Etornam who is a breadwinner in her family, had a bachelor’s degree from the University of Education, Winneba in 2016 and currently pursuing a master’s degree before her untimely death, Daily Guide further reported.

E-levy is already being implemented – Majority Leader
If a bill is passed by Parliament and assented to by the President, it automatically starts operation and anyone who falls foul of that law can be punished severely, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has said.
To that end, he said the e-levy which was approved by Parliament and assented to by the President is now in operation although deductions haven’t started.
He was reacting to the injunction application filed against the e-levy by the National Democratic Congress Members of Parliament (MPs)
On Tuesday April 19 the opposition MPs filed an application at the apex court to block the commencement of the e-levy deductions.
Hearing of the application will take place on May 4.
The Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta earlier revealed that the implementation of the e-levy would start in May this year.
“We had some meetings with Controller and Accountant Generals Department (CAGD) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and they have said right at the beginning of May they should be able to put their system together,” he told TV3’s Roland Walker in Parliament after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo delivered the State of the Nation Address on Wednesday March 30.
The E-levy was passed by Parliament on Tuesday March 29 after the third reading in the House. The Minority staged a walkout during the second reading. They walked out after Mr Iddrisu said the NDC MPs remain united in opposing the policy.
But speaking at a press conference with the Parliamentary press corps on Friday April 22, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu who is also lawmaker for Suame said “They say they want to stop the implementation but the bill is already being implemented, I don’t know what they mean by that. Upon the assent of the President the bill, if Parliament has not postponed the operation, immediately after the assent it comes into operation.
“So, if you fall foul to it you can be prosecuted for falling foul to the bill that has been assented by the President. So this bill is in operation, the necessary structures are being put in place now, it doesn’t mean it is not being implemented, it is being implemented, if the Minister tells you that the actual collection starts from 1st May.
“I think we are beholding some dangerous spectacle in Ghana. Minority party and opposition party exist, Parliament as a whole must be putting government on its toes especially through its committee and if something untoward happens a committee or an individual or the caucus could raise the matter.
“The business of the house requires that these matters are mooted through parliament using the structures to challenge decisions that are taken. If you are saying that you don’t think it was an appropriate representation in the House and you have taken a decision you can come by a motion.
“The burden of proof is on them. On the injunction, I don’t want to pronounce on it but I guess you and I will know that it is going to be an exercise in futility. As far as I am concerned, let us endeavor to exhaust the processes and procedures in parliament, if you are not satisfied and you want to move further upstairs, yes. But at the say so of an individual that let us go to court, when the matter had not been dealt with in Parliament, it is a very dangerous precedent in this country.
“Let nobody convince or persuade himself that the NPP is going to be in government forever, the path that you are charting now will be there to haunt you tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. Litigate your matter in Parliament , why are you afraid to litigate your matter in matter?”

I borrowed car just to flex on social media – Akuapem Poloo confesses
Controversial actress Akuapem Poloo has opened up on how far she went to pursue fame and etch her name in Ghana’s entertainment industry.
While her fans were applauding her for swift achievements shortly after she emerged, Poloo said it was all a ‘fake it till you make it’ move.
In a yet-to-be-aired interview she opened up on how she had to borrow a car and pose it as hers so as to gain applause and be seen as a ‘big girl’.
A white Honda Civic car which she said was gifted to her by her boyfriend in January 2020 was rather a borrowed car.
According to her, she had to go to the length of customizing it in her name (Poloo 1) just for flex.
It is not surprising she did not flaunt the car for long, before it vanished, literally.

Minority E-levy injunction application exercise in futility – Majority
The majority in parliament has rubbished an attempt by 3 minority MPs to place an injunction on the implementation of E-Levy on May 1.
The MPs have filed an application at the Supreme Court for an injunction on implementation of the levy pending the hearing of a substantive case challenging the constitutionality of passage of the E-Levy.
Addressing the media in parliament majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu described the move by the NDC MPs as dangerous since there are internal parliamentary processes they could’ve resorted to.
The Suame MP however categorically stated the levy will be implemented as announced.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu further took a swipe at the Minority Chief Whip Muntaka Mubarak for filing a motion of rescission against the speaker’s referral of 3 majority MPs to the privileges committee over absenteeism.
According to the Suame MP, the speaker was right in referring the petition against the said MPs to the privileges committee.

Tom Grennan recovering after NYC attack
UK singer Tom Grennan is recovering from an “unprovoked attack” which has left him with injuries including a torn ear-drum, his manager has announced.
The 26-year-old is said to have been attacked and robbed outside a bar in Manhattan after performing in New York on Wednesday.
He has been forced to postpone his gig in Washington DC on Friday as a result.
Grennan’s track Little Bit of Love was nominated for song of the year at this year’s Brit Awards.
“In the early hours of this morning after Tom’s New York show, he was the victim of an unprovoked attack and robbery outside a bar in Manhattan,” his manager John Dawkins said in a statement posted online on Thursday evening.
“Tom is currently being assessed by doctors for his injuries which include a ruptured ear, torn ear-drum and issue with his previously fractured jaw.”
He added: “Despite this Tom is in good spirits but needs to temporarily recuperate whilst doctors assess his ability to continue with his touring.”
His manager went on to thank Grennan’s American fans, noting how the singer was “desperate not to let anyone down”, but that the “precautionary decision” had been made to postpone his Washington show until later notice.
Electronic producer Mint Royale tweeted his support for the singer, saying: “Get well soon, sounds awful”.
While presenter Rylan Clark-Neal added: “Sending love mate”. And DJ Mista Jam offered: “Sending love to you bro”.
Grennan initially found fame as the guest vocalist on Chase & Status’s track All Goes Wrong, and he went on to score a number one solo album with 2021’s Evering Road.

Empowering Ghana’s Youth through Vocational Training - Nana Akua Afriyie Boadu’s story
It was the strong desire to contribute to youth development and empowerment that inspired Nana Akua Afriyie Boadu to move back to Ghana. After 25 years abroad, the Ghana-born Canadian returned home to pursue a life long dream of giving back to her motherland.
Nana Akua spent her formative years in Ghana but life took an interesting turn when her family relocated to Canada at 12 years old. She considered herself fortunate to migrant to a country with an advanced economy, however life in Canada birthed a passion to return home and contribute her quota to Ghana’s development.
Her exposure to the western world reaffirmed the value of education in societal development. She identified the need for an alternative to tertiary education which enhances the abilities and skillset of the Ghanaian youth.
The 3FE Training Institute was established in 2021 as a result of her passion to equip tomorrow’s entrepreneurs with skills and to offer an alternative to tertiary education which, otherwise, might not be accessible to all.
The Institute currently has 10 fully qualified lecturers and offers courses in Fashion, Cosmetology, Hair Styling, Nails, and Make up. The 8 dormitory accommodation on campus which houses students will soon be expanded in and around Kronum Kwapra in Kumasi where it is located.
With an accreditation from the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET), Nana Akua hopes to expand the Institute’s campuses across other regions in the near future.
What makes the school unique is the skilled tutors who have acquired all the necessary certification and high quality equipment used in delivery of courses. In addition, the Institute plans to award best graduating students with immediate employment with the institution and other sister companies in their field. 3FE Institute also has a very flexible enrollment and tuition installment payment system which makes the institute accessible to all classes of people.
Nana Akua believes that various governments in the past have helped improve the narrative around vocational training but the negative bias can only be eliminated with continuous education and support from both public and private entities.
As an entrepreneur of a young start up business, she has had her fair share of challenges but the vision for the future fuels her with strength to tackle every challenge. She encourages all entrepreneurs to continue to pursue their dreams of advancing Ghana’s development.
In the next 5 years, Nana Akua hopes the 3FE Institute will be the reference Vocational and Technical Institute in Ghana with branches across other regions, empowering thousands of future entrepreneurs.
Her supportive family and upbringing have shaped her values and inspired her to be the woman she is today.

FDA partners GIZ to train health workers on vaccine safety knowledge
The Food and Drugs Authorities (FDA), in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation, GIZ, has trained three hundred and twenty-eight (328) health professionals made up of doctors, pharmacists, and nurses on vaccine safety.
These participants are part of the Institutional Contact Persons in different facilities across the 16 regions of Ghana who work closely with the Food and Drugs Authority [FDA] as focal persons. They are from government hospitals and Christian Health Association Ghana-run facilities. The objective is to heighten knowledge and scale down vaccine hesitancy.
The participants were trained on pharmacovigilance and vaccine safety monitoring systems in Ghana, vaccine development and effectiveness, basic concepts of Adverse Events Following Immunization [AEFI], AEFI surveillance and management, and how to identify and manage AEFI.
“When someone comes to you after the jab that they are dizzy, have a swelling, a headache, what are you supposed to do? This is why training them on how to surveil, report and manage adverse events following immunization is crucial”, said the FDA Regional Head of Bono Region, who is also in charge of Ahafo and Bono East Regions, Akosua Amponsaa Owusu.
She said, “each region has a six-member team made up of clinicians, pharmacists and lab technicians, FDA.”
“If there is an adverse effect, you need to investigate and then report to the technical advisory committee at FDA headquarters to determine causality and then advise on what to do.”
The training hopes to bridge the knowledge gap in vaccine development and administration so that healthcare professionals are better equipped to convince patients to take vaccines and also serve as trainers of trainees for colleagues in their institutions of work.
“When people take for instance the Covid-19 vaccine, they react, no matter how small, healthcare professionals must report. If I come with a headache, you just don’t say this is nothing and if you sleep small, it’ll go. Just take the needed information because that also helps in the vaccine redevelopment. We need this concrete evidence which comes together as data to determine whether for instance vaccine must be readjusted for Africans”, said Akosua Amponsaa Owusu.
A pharmacist participant, Kwaku Nimoh-Boakye with the Sene District Hospital shared what he picked up from the training, and recalled how hesitant people are to take the Covid-19 vaccine with some chucking it down to how swift its development was.
He said, “we were taught how Covid-19 vaccines were developed, which leveraged on existing knowledge as far as vaccine development was concerned.”
“It is not that they did anything adhoc. I must tell you that even in my health facility, some health workers are hesitant to take the jab due to safety concerns. But having had this training, I can go back and convince my colleagues as well as the public. Also, when there are any adverse events after the jab, we have been taught how to take down the report using the Med Safety App. This will help strengthen public confidence”.
Another participant, Miriam Nkrumah, a Disease Control Officer at Dawadawa Health Center was also delighted with the training, stating that, “you don’t just pick a vaccine and start immunization. You must check the date of manufacture and other important information. Also, it is wrong to tell mothers to give their children paracetamol before coming for the six childhood killer disease immunization. We also now know and can confidently report on adverse events by telling mothers not to sit at home whenever they notice an abscess after immunization, but to bring the children back to the facilities for care”.
This project is funded through the development program and implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.

Serwaa Broni Saga: Resign as a gentleman – Otukornor tells Akufo Addo
Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otokunor wants President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to resign.
He claims he is not ‘fit’ to hold the highest position of the land after several allegations were levelled against him by one Evelyn Aidoo, alias Serwaa Broni.
The Canadian-based Ghanaian lady has in the last few months been trending on social media for perhaps all the wrong reasons.
Besides claiming to have had an affair with the President, Serwaa Broni has among other things, posted images with the President and screenshots of chats she claims to be between her and President Akufo-Addo; to buttress her assertions.
Over the weekend, she alleged during a media engagement with one Kevin Taylor that there was an orchestrated robbery attack on her which she pinned on the President and some of his assigns.
Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show, 'Ghana Montie', Peter Otokunor said the alleged relationship between the President and Miss Evelyn Aidoo has brought shame to the presidency – hence, the call on him to resign.
"If he doesn’t resign as a gentleman, we’ll force him to. We will impeach him,” he told host, Akwasi Aboagye.
