With Part 1 being a simple story with some great elements mixed in I didn't really grow fond of Jonathan but man, seeing him die by Dio's... veins...? Just broke me heart.

Especially when in his final act of resistance, as he tragically merely temporarily stops Dio from taking over his body, to Dio's utter shock, Jonathan then tenderly embraces Dio's severed head with a gentle smile.

And man, Dio's reaction to this. The disbelief in his eyes as Jonathan, despite all the pain he caused him, hugged him so tight.

This may have very well been the first time Dio recieved genuine affection that he didn't extract through his charisma. Jonathan didn't embrace him because Dio fooled him, it was an act of genuine human warmth. Because on a certain level, despite his resolve to rid the world of Dio's evil, he still to a degree had grown to love him during their years together.

Dio perhaps as a sign of full respect, towards the one person who could match his mental fortitude, tries to bargain with Jonathan. He promises to heal Jonathan's wounds, live together with Erina forever, and this time, not as Dio's zombie slave, but an equal.

Then, Dio realises in disbelief, that Jonathan is already dead. And what really gets me that Dio seems shocked. Sad even. As the ship explodes he doesn't say a word or move. The ship explodes as Dio stays in Jonathan's arms.

As if he was mourning Jonathan.

And it really makes me wonder, just how long was Dio just staying there in Jonathan's embrace before ultimately becoming one with him.

#that final scene in phantom blood is so poignant #although I always took Dio's bargaining as more a slimy last attempt to manipulate jonathan into releasing him before being #burned up in the ship #however it can certainly be interpreted in other ways too

Avdol and Obi-wan have the same curse where they *seem* logical and calm and collected and rational but that's only because the people they interact with are dramatic and chaotic in a much, much more obvious fashion.
