i really just want to make art, giggle till i cry, read books till midnight and get kissed on my forehead

I was so excited b/c a designer on HGTV was going to do a house in Dark Academia. When she was finished, the walls were white, the pallet was neutral and the furnishings modern. If she didn’t say what it was supposed to be, I’d have never guessed. (See their version in the previous post.)

This is how you do it. It’s vintage, can be cluttered, and most importantly, it’s dark. It’s worn with patina.

There are no white walls.

And, of course it has to include vintage books and academic stuff. 

Vintage lab stuff, too.

Add plants, art supplies, and specimens.

Busts and statuary are part of the mix.

And, it’s also Goth-y.

dark academia in modernity

- smoking a vape instead of cigarettes because people don’t carry around cigarettes anymore (don’t smoke, it’s bad for you)

- drinking seltzer and pink whitney at parties where there is no wine, standing in the corner romanticizing as your friends black out to music you don’t listen to

- appreciating the books you’re set to read in class, adoring the pages while your friends complain about the workload

- gender envy

- wearing jeans with a button up and a blazer because it’s high school in the 21st century

- writing with colorful pens because bringing your fountain pen to school is inconvenient and notes are prettier colorful anyway

- reading multiple books at once because there isn’t enough time

- obsessing over the secret history and dead poets society in a way no one else gets

- making playlists dedicated to your favorite book characters

- reading poetry from the 19th century and before because you connect to it more

- going to the art museum alone

- loving shakespeare when everyone else hates it

- constantly wanting to live in a ghibli film

- saying big words just to tease your friends

- wanting to disappear into the woods at all times

- classic literature

- loving your english or history teacher more than anyone

- romanticizing every second of your life because anything, anything is more beautiful than modernity
