There may have been some people out there compiling maleval playlists. In case this one hadn't been considered, especially for a modern AU, there's "True Love" by Pink. Just sayin'

"I love my old mom who used to be before, came out of love, went out of the heart. Why wouldn't she again be such mum who: forgives, tickles and cuddles and hugs, as always and now loves, teaches me and helps and doesn't spank and who is out of love and caution made, whom mind reigns."
-my 8 years old, in writing, after having his screen priviledges taken away, translated from out native language.

This is my cryptonite.
Let's talk about pacing.
Pacing is crucial to consider in plot development. It refers to the speed at which events unfold in your story.
It's important to vary the pacing to keep readers engaged. By effectively managing it throughout, you can maintain reader interest, build tension, and create an overall compelling narrative.
Fast-paced scenes: Use quick, action-packed scenes during moments of high tension, such as intense action sequences or pivotal plot points. Short sentences and rapid-fire dialogue can help create a sense of urgency and keep readers on the edge of their seats.
Slow-paced scenes: Slow down the pacing during moments of introspection, character development, or when you want to build atmosphere. Take the time to delve into emotions, descriptions, and inner thoughts to deepen the reader's connection to the characters and world.
Transitions: Smoothly transition between fast-paced and slow-paced scenes to maintain momentum while allowing readers time to catch their breath and process information. (See here for more on how to effectively implement transitions!)
Avoid prolonged lulls: While it's essential to have slower moments for character development and world-building, be cautious of prolonged lulls in the story where nothing significant happens. Keep the plot moving forward, even during quieter scenes, by introducing new information, conflicts, or character dynamics.
Balance: have a balance between fast-paced and slow-paced scenes throughout your narrative to create a dynamic reading experience. Too much action without sufficient downtime can exhaust readers, while an excessive number of slow scenes may lead to boredom.

She doesn't have this with any other characters, even Aurora.
thinking about all the times in the films when maleficent and diaval just looked at and nodded to each other without having to say a word

Well now, since you asked.... 😁
Reason 1. for me is that I love Diaval, personality-wise. I love that he isn't the most powerful, the strongest, the baddest, the most prominent dude around, but the kindest, the most selfless, most devoted the sweetest and sassiest, possibly the smartest, and an amazing dad to an (adoptive) daughter. Those things are sexy in my book.
Reason 2. is that in a guy like Diaval, described above, is in RL usually the kind of person that works well with a person like Maleficent. You can rarely have two Maleficents together. They are too controlling, too reluctant to show emotion, too proud for their own good and too volatile to be with someone similar to them. They need someone completely different as a counterbalance. That's why Aurora was so successful at melting Maleficent's shields. Had Aurora been a colder, less affectionate kid, I see things going in a much different way.
Reason 3. is that for me, a guy like Diaval, described above, has the qualities, described above, that I'd like to see presented to the young audience as cool on a man. I am fed up with aggressive, reckless, boastful men being shown as desirable, when in RL, they are usually a walking red flag. We need more Diavals in this world. Young people need to see that kindness and devotion "get the girl" crudely speaking; not muscle and showing off.
Reason 4. for me is that my own relationship, where emotional balance is concerned, is very much like Maleficent and Diaval, where I am diavalish and my hubby is maleficentish, and I relate strongly whith Diaval. 😅
Why is almost every single finished FanFiction for “Maleficent” a romance between either Maleficent and Diaval, Diaval and Aurora or Maleficent and Aurora or they are super short?
Also why are there people thinking they’re the only one who ship Diaval and Maleficent when it’s the most popular ship in the fandom?😭

This is one of the most amazing elaborations on the nature of their relationship I have ever seen 🥰
cant believe i forgot about maleficent and her emo boytoy omg thank you for cleansing the timeline🫶
I am so pleased to bless the timeline with a fine vintage ship, come join me in savoring it. I checked out the novelization on a whim (commuting) and I was like, oh right! I forgot this movie and specifically this ship was made in a lab for my brain. So now I've rewatched the film and I'm lost in the sauce.
I love that Maleficent/Diaval is the story of two people accidentally raising a baby into a teenager together and the whole time Maleficent is oblivious (not her fault! she has bigger things going on!) while Diaval is like "that's my wife, she's terrifying. i love her. <3" Even when Aurora meets them properly as a 15 year old, Maleficent is Going Through It™ while Diaval is just so hype to finally introduce himself to his child.
Tumblr media
Pictured above: moments that really did a number on me. He raised this kid and now he gets to finally meet her properly and they're both so delighted by it while Maleficent watches from the corner like }:-(
I really feel like the most beautiful and unique part of it is the genuine backtalk; Diaval might start out subservient and he certainly maintains that position but as time goes on he proves himself perfectly willing to correct or backtalk Maleficent. He basically functions as a reminder of her heart and moral compass while she is recovering from her hurt (and subsequent revenge bender) and it's delightful to watch because you rarely see a position where a male character is so open and honest while the woman gets to have the delicious redemption arc. Maleficent is going through an enemies-to-godfamily relationship arc with Aurora while Diaval is patiently waiting for her to realize he's got heart eyes (AND for her to realize she does actually love Aurora, that's another great element, he realizes this LONG before Maleficent does and tries to gently nudge her over to that revelation). But also this:
Tumblr media
He really said "I am just pretending to be afraid of you; I know you won't hurt me even if you push me around" and he was right. What a lovely thing to be playing out as the B or maybe C-plot. There's enough insane drama happening, it's nice that there's something a little lighter and more steady in the background of the story.
Another thing I was musing on through the book and film -- as much as I adore found family and platonic love, it's nice to see a story where a victim of what is clearly coded as sexual assault and is at least intimate partner violence finds love again. I know Maleficent & Diaval isn't technically 'canon', but again, the film was juggling enough relationship arcs with Maleficent & Aurora and Maleficent & Stefan. It's okay, in my eyes, for the romance element to be subtext, when it's clearly still important and given some narrative space and weight.
Tumblr media
I had a more coherent thought but finally found a gif of just this moment (thank you, @raainstorms, you spoil us all) so instead you get this. I love it. Maleficent really said "go defend our kid who I haven't realized yet is our kid" and Diaval said "understood". Never proposed but nevertheless they've been married for years.
"Who fell first vs. who fell harder" is defunct. "Which one is the evil minion who adopted the baby on sight and who is the Evil Empress who had to slowly realize they love the baby" is the vintage yardstick everything else has to measure up to. I will read 100,000 fanfics of Maleficent only belatedly realizing that somewhere in the process of acquiring her goddaughter she also acquired a husband. Maybe she acquired the husband first, she certainly does not know. Diaval understands this and is okay with it, Aurora probably doesn't understand in the slightest how her godmother did not pick up on anything.
And the sequel! I realized after reading some other posts that I did NOT remember the sequel correctly because my memories are "fairy genocide and also Diaval and Maleficent are co-parenting". Apparently somewhere in there Maleficent is shoved into a love triangle with two men who are not her long-term boytoy/coparent/external moral compass, which is ridiculous, because the film ends with them attending their daughter's wedding in matching outfits.
Tumblr media
If Maleficent 3 (boo hiss at Disney, make something new, cowards) isn't about Aurora parent trapping them I am going to riot in the street.
TL;DR: My roommate described maleval as this post and I have not been able to shake it from my mind because it really, really fits:

Oh we hide. Like snake hides its legs. My closest friends and family don't know I write fanfiction, let alone other folks. I hide it like a shameful secret, like an affair, like a skeleton under the stairs.
The fact that there are so many fanfic writers and yet, despite all the friends I make IRL who love all the fandoms and fanfic I love, I have never met another fanfic writer IRL terrifies me… do we all just hide?? Is it the people that I least suspect??? WHERE IS EVERYONE???

Finally being financially independent
Finally becoming capable enough in your job/skill that it starts to boost your confidence and makes you feel like a fully fledged adult
Finally having others coming to youfir advice instead of you being the clueless one
Finally learning to be comfortable in your sexuality
Finding a partner who is mature and knows a s*itload of things, I mean life things, not only fun stuff but useful skills and knowledges, and you learn a lot from them
When you have all the above settled, just when you think nothing can throw you off, you get g a child and have your world turned inside out by the lack of sleep, lack of skills, having no idea if you are capable of keeping the baby alive let alone raise them, and out of that all mess you find yourself reborn again as someone who learned fears you never knew existed and felt love you never knew to be possible and you learned patience you never though you were capable of and you are sometimes a child all over again with your kid
That post about 30 year old coming of age stories?
I’ve been thinking about it all morning. What would the plot points be for that? What makes a 30 year old coming of age story?
Old folks sound off in the comments

I have tons of them, but here's this one: they have been a couple since the end of M1 or earlier, but Maleficent's emotional constipation makes her unwilling to show it in public and Diaval won't speak of it out if respect for her, so they are pretty much a running gossip in the Moors; everybody knows about them but nobody dares to mention it to their faces.
Apparently I've been living under a pile of rocks, because even with internet access I just found out Maleficent 3 is confirmed. So, whilst I am busy having a heart attack, let all Maleval shippers come forth and give me their headcanons about our favorite Dark Fey/Raven pairing.
Here's mine: the first thing Diaval said to Maleficent after she turned him from dragon to human after the Battle of Perceforest is: "can they [her wings] take you to the stars?"
