I went back.

Due to my seeds refusing to sprout, I've been forced to go to the plant nursery and purchase many seedlings. Woe is me (said in obscene southern accent whilst flinging myself dramatically to the couch)

How dare I need to grace their verdant aisles in search of the foliage I require!

Truth be told, I was an absolute goblin in the nursery. I was alone. Absolutely no social structure in place to stop me from chanting 'green things' over and over as I pet virtually every leaf in reaching distance.

Strawberries are starting to bloom. I just raked out the bed of old leaves. Time to trim the ivy growing in here to keep it from taking over.

It might not be a noticeable change when I'm done, but I'll be happier for it.

It's not always as simple as plug the holes, though.

Sometimes, the holes are in hard to reach places. For instance, my ants are coming in from behind my counters because the builders either did not put a good seal between the slab and the wall, or it's old enough now that the seal is decaying. I can't get to it without ripping out my whole kitchen.

Sometimes, the holes aren't even visible. Sometimes, the holes are found and plugged; the ants chew through the plug and come in anyway, or find alternative routes.

Ants are determined little insects. If they know food is available, they will find a way to come in.

I wish I could put a chemical barrier around the outside of the house to keep insects out, but I have children, animals, and edible foodstuffs that the chemicals will harm.

Advice nobody ever asks for but every time I tell someone they find it extremely useful:

If you want to get rid of ants in your house mix a cup of icing sugar and a cup of potato starch 50/50 (dry, no water) and spread it near the holes where the ants get into your house. They won’t be able to separate the sugar and starch and will feed their larvae with the mixture. The starch will kill the larvae. So you won’t see results right away but if you keep it up you’ll get rid of them over a few weeks. I make a batch every summer to combat ants in my kitchen.

Because the mixture is non-toxic to humans and other mammals it’s perfect if you have children or pets. God knows my dogs eat anything on the floor and this way my only worry is they might get cavities if they get into my pest control powder.

We are finally starting on projects. Things are happening again. Not just the survival of winter!

Starting with an 8 x 24 quarantine coop for the possible hand-me-down birds. They need to be away from my ladies for a while.

Also, I took the plastic off of the coop door! It's almost time to remove the flashing from the ceiling as well, but I'll wait until we pass Labor Day. As impossible as it feels currently, we still have a chance of frost until then.

Soccer games today. Hubs and I are split up because both kiddos have games at the same time.

Um... um... let me think.

1. Orion is my favorite constellation! Every time I see it, a little piece of my soul settles.

2. I've only been cooking/baking for about 10 years. I've come a long way; I feel like I'm pretty good at it. I have a few friends who come to me for cooking advice because I've tried so many recipes. It feels really nice when they ask me about something I can help with.

3. I desperately want to learn how to play the violin. I started learning when I was about 7 at a local community center but had to quit because we moved.

*Whew!* I need one more square for each background. We had trouble laying it out because even using the whole center of the room we still had to squish them together somewhat. I feel like something it off-kilter with the dark blue rows, but I'm going to try to put some blocks together in sections and hopefully, if there's an error near the bottom, I will be able to figure out what it is while that part is still laid out on the floor in pieces.

A friend of mine in Texas got some good pictures of the total eclipse! It's beautiful!

We got about 90% coverage where I'm at. It had a very thin smile left at the top. I'm surprised at how cold it got during the coverage. We had almost a 10 degree drop!
