Friendly reminder that I'm currently running a raffle for dog treats! Winner gets to pick either a bag of dehydrated chicken breast or beef hearts.
I make and package these treats so they are 100% single ingredient. Here's a picture of a bag of beef hearts.

gotta say, the "id dog breeds" gimmick is fun and all but the thing about referencing biological categories is that they're so much messier than the car model IDs that are being riffed off. especially with anything with a poodle coat, given.... the thirty years of doodles meaning that there are a hell of a lot of crosses out there.
I would not personally presume to confidently announce the breed of any poodle/doodly thing without having hands on it, because a) crosses with all manner of options are so common, b) so much of the common heuristic for recognizing poodle vs doodle is a matter of haircut, and c) it's so hard to assess anything about the structure of a dog with a loose, rough coat that obscures the dog's shape. Frankly, after getting Benton's Embark back, I also don't make confident pronouncements about any mix.
Tumblr media
Yeah, that dog is approximately half American Bully. Guess that from looking at him, folks. (I routinely flabbergast dog professionals by encouraging them to guess his breed makeup.) I still regularly read the r/DoggyDNA subreddit, and it's just astonishing how many ways there are to build a mutt and how hard it is to accurately predict anything about a mixed breed dog's ancestry without additional information--especially when a lot of colors pop out in mixes in some rather unexpected ways. (For example: Golden and Labrador retriever mixes have a pronounced tendency to pop out as brindles, bewildering everyone concerned. There are a lot of dominant black pit bulls. And about 75% of anything with a wire coat is poodle, not any kind of terrier.) There are so many ways to get a black and tan or sable dog. If you want to claim expertise, you have to know what the limits of your knowledge are and when you need additional information to make a call.
Identifying purebred dogs which come out of a controlled gene pool is obviously much easier, although you need to be aware how various populations within breeds have been selected and what those populations typically look like. Even then, you need to be careful: it's so easy to assume that conformation shots show you what a given dog breed looks like, but that's usually not the case: both pet and working populations have often diverged substantially from the conformation ideal, not least because conformation standards are a fucking social construct. We have to distinguish between socially constructed and natural categories when we try to learn how to run these kinds of identifications.
more broadly, dogs are living things and therefore they don't come with model numbers or unique serial numbers. "Breed" is a social construct that shapes their populations because, basically, our human culture says it should. You can identify a car very accurately because cars are human-made inanimate objects, and each category of car is essentially identical within the category at construction. That's how mass-produced items work. They lend themselves so nicely to this kind of ordered assignment and identification.
Animals do not work like that. You can strive for uniformity all you want, but mutation is going to pop up and fuck with your carefully uniform lines when you aren't looking. For example, just look at the C57BL/6J and C57BL/6N mouse substrains, which have been bred in total isolation from any other mouse population in brother-sister matings aiming for total uniformity since the 1930s... and were noticed having developed divergent characteristics by the 1950s. Turns out that substrain matters.
And you can't tell without running some very specific tests, let alone from any marker so plain as a static picture.

The number of crimes in my house has risen as Dandelion has recovered from his ordeal.
I could still use help with his vet bills. Reblogs are appreciated, and even a dollar donation would mean the world.
Because his condition could return I'm trying to pay down the bills as soon as possible should, god forbid, he block again.

Sorry to hijack your post like that, but this reminds me that recently I found something Sammy finds very upsetting:
a bunch of daffodils. Just behind a chain link fence on a property nearby. It's just a little cluster with maybe 3 flowers
He wouldn't go further once he saw them. He also didn't want to check them out when I offered. We crossed the street so he could look at them from a distance, but he just kept woofing at them and didn't want to go further along even on the other side of the street XD Who knows what those lil fuckers could do to him, after all... He still finds them very sus
List of animals Troj finds upsetting, updated 26/3/24:
- whippets
- cats
- basset hounds

editing commissions open
Would really love to earn some extra money by doing editing commissions because I'm in-between jobs rn.
Camera or phone, doesn't matter. I can remove stuff like people, harnesses, collars, leashes, ect. or add things like snow. Or just completely change the feel and temperature.
I can also sharpen, denoise and remove slight blur.
5€ per pic.
Just shoot me a message of what you want a photo and I'll send you an e-mail address to send me the big file photo.

I think. Pukki is developing some teeth issues. She's eating very slowly and carefully, which is very unusual for her. Also just this morning I noticed her breath has gotten smelly.
🤦🤦🤦
When I said "can I have a break" I didn't mean just a few days? I actually meant maybe a few months, or better yet years?? Maybe just one would've been good?
I definitely can't pay for another dental right now 🥲⁉️ what the heckkkkkk

Hey! I’m having to pay for some really pricy car repairs and I’m having to dip into my top surgery fund to do it (ok, I have had to DRAIN my top surgery fund…) and I would LOVE some extra income to cover the costs.
I’m offering behavior consulting, manners and obedience training, or help building training plans to dogblr folks at 15% off lessons, and 25% off the initial consultation for dogblr right now. DM me to set up an appointment via custom booking link.
Some areas I’ve done the most work recently:
- cooperative care including consent based grooming, and vet skills
- dog to dog and dog to human directed aggression (including bite cases)
- anxiety and fear driven behaviors and reactivity
- leash walking skills
- integrating multi-dog households
- service dog task training
I’ve worked with a handful of Dogblr households including @doomspaniels and @blueboyluca and @konmari-dogs and @a-hiking-fish each of whom have voiced making measurable progress toward their goals even in just one session, as well as lasting improvements.
More on my methods and experience under the cut :)
If you’re not familiar with me, I practice force free, science-based education that is intended to accomplish your goals in a way that deepens your connection with your dog. Between professional experience and internships, I have over 15 years of hands on training experience, and I’m board certified by the IAABC and Fear Free Pets to handle behavior cases. I’ve worked with dozens of breeds, dabbled in a variety of sports, and have worked many different kinds of emotion driven behavior cases. If you have questions, please feel free to drop me a DM :)

Also quick update on Bats, who had a follow up at our regular vet today. Since the meds work great we're basically waiting until they're used up and see what happens then. If it was just a blocked salivary gland or something that should've been it. Only if the swelling comes back they need to look more closely at it, aka under anesthesia. Fingers crossed that won't be necessary!!

Installed the new gear and tested it on a short trip to my parent's house and back. The good side is, it actually helps with the leash chaos and with some getting used to it'll help a lot with safety. Sammy can still hang back, but not as much as without the leash holder, so I can still see him beside me rather than behind me. The basket is maybe a little cramped for Sammy, but he should be able to sit in it securely. Still need to actually test it, tough. Apart from that the basket is a nice versatile addition.
The not so good thing is that the front of the scooter is damn heavy now 😅 which makes it even more difficult to drive very slowly than before. I completely underestimated the weight of both the leash holder and the basket! But hopefully it's getting better with practice? Carrying the scooter the handful of steps to my apartment is also much more challenging now. Also it's much more noticeable when the dogs do pull through the leash holder, which I didn't expect. But I guess that's what I get for installing it in the front rather than under the seat. So far I've still attached the dogs to me, but loosely looped the leashes through the holder as well so I can detach them from the scooter quickly enough. Maybe I'll experiment with that setup to find something potentially better. But it does work so far.
Well, I'm looking forward to more tests. I'm kinda wishing we had more spacious sidewalks, though. That would've probably made things easier, but what can you do 😂

Yyyyyeeeaaaahhhhhh so my plan to just somehow muddle us through the weekend until Monday was thwarted, after all 😅 I called the emergency vet (2 actually because the info on which practice is open for emergencies today was effing wrong and it took a while to get to the correct one - good thing I didn't need something serious and time sensitive treated like bloat 🤦 my dog would've been dead in that case /rage ) to ask if I can give him one of the pain killers I still have. But they all thought it would be better to see him in person, because all sorts of things could've caused that swelling. So I went, and he got treated with pain killers and something anti inflammatory so we can get over the weekend and next week he needs to be seen by our regular vet to find out what's actually going on in that jaw. Sigh 🥲 hopefully the rest of your weekend will be restful now. I really need a break 🙈
