The problem

The issue that makes Time Machine more difficult in terms of options for backup locations is that it requires use of Apple's proprietary HFS+ filesystem. Although I'm certain the HFS+ features that Time Machine uses for file versioning and linking could be 'mimicked' for use on other more open filesystems, the reality is that Apple chose HFS+ and supports that filesystem exclusively in Time Machine (in fact as of this writing Apple's new APFS isn't even supported for Time Machine backups as of yet).

Create a Windows share location

I won't go into detail on how to create a shared folder on a Windows PC but before you begin, you'll need to have a share created and accessible to your Mac that you want to run Time Machine on. For example, if you have a Windows PC named 'Server' and a network shared folder on the Windows PC named 'share', you'd be able to test for connectivity by doing the following:

Start Finder.

Click GO > Connect to Server.

Enter smb://Server/Share where 'server' is the name of the Windows PC and 'share' is the name of the shared folder.

Click Connect.

If you've properly set everything up, you'll be prompted to enter a registered user and password. As a word of warning, the size you choose will be the size of the disk space that will be immediately created on the remote share.

Make certain that the Format is set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Click Save. This will take a while especially if you set a large file size.

Legacy 9, also known as Legacy Family Tree 9, is a fully featured genealogy program that is considered by many to be the best on the market today.

It has plenty going for it, and only a couple of weak areas.

Pros and cons

Legacy 9 provides everything you would expect, plus a lot of neat extras that are new in the latest edition.

One powerful tool is the compare two people tool, which lets you examine two people side by side.

This is especially useful if you have two records with the same name, but you’re not sure if they’re the same person.

The side by side display lets you check them out easily rather than having to keep flipping back and forth.

Legacy 9 has the most extensive (and in most cases best looking) set of charts out of any genealogy program.

This gives you all sorts of options for printing out your results.

The latest release even includes a new X-DNA chart to track your genetic inheritance.

In addition to printed reports, Legacy 9 has built-in support to turn your family tree into a webpage automatically.

It also has a built-in web browser so you can check out online sites without having to switch back and forth between windows.

The program includes color coding for easy organization of your ancestors, such as tracking children from multiple marriages, and up to nine tags that can be used however you want.

Legacy 9 even includes a secure online backup for your family trees, so you never have to worry about losing your database.

On the down side, Legacy 9 does not support same-sex marriages yet, though that is supposed to be coming.

The Legacy website is less flashy than most and a little harder to navigate at times, but still includes a help center, forums, and more.

Compatibility

Legacy 9 is only designed for Windows, though their website includes instructions for how to make it work on a Mac using an emulator.

The Legacy website provides a variety of training videos and programs, and an extensive help center that includes user forums, troubleshooting advice, and even a suggestion box for you to tell them what features you’d like to see added.

Integration

Legacy 9 is specifically designed to work with a variety of useful (and free) websites, including FamilySearch, FindMyPast, GenealogyBank, MyHeritage, and Find A Grave.

It can search these sites for your ancestors automatically and give you hints on where to find more information.

Family Historian 6 is not nearly as well-known as Family Tree Maker or Legacy, but that doesn’t mean it is any less useful when it comes to recording your findings.

Pros and cons

Family Historian’s greatest strength is its ease of use.

If you’re looking for a program that you can use right out of the box from day one, this is it.

You can get started right away without having to read a lot of manuals or watch a bunch of tutorials.

Entering information into Family Historian is simple and intuitive.

The main screen includes both an ancestry chart and a separate details box for a selected individual, letting you enter information without losing sight of the big picture.

Family Historian includes a “smart trees” option that lets you expand or collapse different parts of your tree as needed.

That means you can concentrate on just a small section at a time without your other branches filling up the screen.

Free Family Tree For Mac

The program also offers tools to view two family trees side by side so you can compare them before deciding if you want to merge them.

Family Historian includes a dynamic mapping tool that not only lets you see where your ancestors were, but lets you color code them, zoom in and out, view all the events that happened at a particular location, and more.

Family Historian 6 also offers powerful tools for sharing your family tree with others in print or electronically. It includes about twice as many charts as Family Tree Maker, though not as many as Legacy 9, and they are not as artistic.

The lack of backgrounds leaves Family Historian charts looking a little dull compared to other programs.

Unfortunately, Family Historian 6 does not offer any support for DNA results at this point.

RootsMagic has some powerful features that you won’t find in many programs, including the ability to have more than one database open at the same time.

That makes it a lot easier to compare databases and copy information from one to the other.

You can even drag and drop people directly from one database to the other.

One of the best things about RootsMagic is a unique feature called RootsMagic To-Go, which lets you load a portable copy of the program onto a USB drive.

That way you can take it with you and use it on any computer wherever and whenever you want.

This can make doing research on the road, at libraries, courthouses, or wherever, much easier, and lets you enter search results right away.

RootsMagic makes it simple to share your findings. Built-in tools help you create custom webpages, CDs, and DVDs, and offers plenty of print options as well.

This program is one of the few that currently allows you to include same-sex marriages in your family tree, and can manage other complex relationships as well.

Compared to other programs, RootsMagic does not have as many charts available, but it has extensive options for creating every sort of report you’re ever likely to want.

On the negative side, RootsMagic’s interface is not as nice looking or easy to use as other programs. That can make it more frustrating for folks just starting out in genealogy.

Even better, it can help you add other sites as well, something most software doesn’t allow.

That can be a great help when searching for information from other countries around the world.

Like our other top five choices, Family Tree Heritage provides web hints for getting the most out of your online connections.

Family Tree Heritage has powerful tools to make it easy to merge two family trees together, saving you hours of crosschecking and identifying duplicate records.

The program makes it easy to add news sources, and a ditto tool that lets you quickly connect one source to many individuals. This can be a great time saver.

One of the best features of Family Tree Heritage is the way you process bulk changes in your family tree all at once.

If you find a mistake, like a misspelled town name, you only need to fix it in one spot, and the program can update it everywhere else for you instantly.

Other features include a research timeline that organizes what you do (and don’t) know about an ancestor chronologically, color coding to help organize family branches both on your computer and in print, and the ability to add up to three custom tags to each ancestor so you can group them however you want.

Family Tree Heritage is mixed when it comes to producing charts and reports.

Family Tree Heritage 9 lets you link to more online sites than any of the other programs.

If you want to work together with other family members on the same tree, Family Tree Maker 2017 is the way to go.

If you’re looking to create a webpage from your findings, Legacy 9 and RootsMagic 7 are your best choices.

If you want to create amazing looking ancestral charts, Legacy 9 is your best bet.

For the most economical route, Legacy 9 and RootsMagic 7 both have free versions with no time limit, but you’ll miss out on some of their best features.

In the end, don’t agonize too much about picking the wrong program. In most cases, all of them will do what you need especially if you are just starting out.

Worst case scenario, all these programs let you export your data as a GEDCOM file, which can be loaded into any other genealogy software.

It won’t copy everything, such as photos and videos, but it will save you from starting from scratch.

Logitech has unveiled the Folio Touch, a keyboard and trackpad case for the iPad Pro that directly competes with Apple's Magic Keyboard.

When macOS Mojave was announced, Apple warned that it would be the last version of macOS that would support older 32-bit apps. Apple has been phasing out 32-bit apps for the last 10 years and is now ready to take the final step, even if Mac users may not be ready to lose access to older apps.

With the release of macOS Catalina, 32-bit app support is no longer available, which means many of your older apps will no longer work if they haven't been updated to 64-bit.

32-bit vs. 64-bit

32-bit apps date back to a time when there were 32-bit processors and 32-bit operating systems, but are now outdated. Apple has long since transitioned to 64-bit processors and macOS has been 64-bit since the launch of Snow Leopard in 2009.

Compared to 32-bit apps, 64-bit apps can take advantage of more memory and offer faster system performance. Apple technologies like Metal only work with 64-bit apps, and for Apple to ensure that Mac apps include all of the latest advancements and optimizations, support for 32-bit needs to end. In the simplest terms, 32-bit apps are inefficient.

32-bit apps can run on a 64-bit system as they've been doing for years, but Apple wants to get rid of outdated apps to make sure everything that runs on the Mac is properly optimized and isn't an unnecessary drain on system resources.

Previous Warnings

Apple started warning Mac users about plans to end support for 32-bit apps back with macOS High Sierra. In High Sierra, users started getting warnings about a 32-bit app's future incompatibility with macOS.

A similar message was available in macOS Mojave, and if you opened up a 32-bit app while running Mojave, you saw an alert letting you know a specific app wouldn't work with future versions of macOS unless it was updated.

Alerts re-appeared every 30 days when launching an app, with Apple aiming to make sure customers would not be caught unaware when a 32-bit app stopped working in the future, so you should already know if one of your frequently used apps hasn't been upgraded to 64-bit.

Upon updating to ‌macOS Catalina‌, you'll be shown a list of 32-bit apps that no longer work on your system.

How to Check if an App is 32-Bit or 64-Bit in macOS Mojave

To determine whether an app is 64-bit or 32-bit and to see if there are 32-bit apps installed on your machine before upgrading to ‌macOS Catalina‌, follow these steps:

Click the Apple symbol () in the menu bar on your Mac's desktop.

Click on About This Mac.

Choose 'System Report' at the bottom of the window.

Scroll down to the Software list on the sidebar.

Select Legacy Software.'

Anything in the list of Legacy Software applications is a 32-bit app and will not work when upgrading to ‌macOS Catalina‌.

If Legacy Software isn't an option in the sidebar, select the Applications option and then check the list of apps at the right. The column that's labeled 64-bit will show a 'No' listing for apps that are 32-bit.

How to Prepare to Update to ‌macOS Catalina‌

The first step is to make sure there aren't already available updates for apps that you have on your system, which you can generally do by updating through the Mac App Store for ‌Mac App Store‌ apps.

Apps outside of the ‌Mac App Store‌ use other update methods that can vary by app, but for many, you can click on the app's name in the menu bar and choose the 'Check for Updates' option. Some other apps have more hidden update methods, so if you do have a 32-bit app, make sure to Google how to update it to be sure there's not already new software available.

After ensuring you've updated everything you're able to update, you can contact developers and ask them to update their apps, but if that doesn't pan out, the only other solution is to start the search for an alternative app if you're committed to upgrading to ‌macOS Catalina‌ or have already done so.

32-Bit App Warnings When Installing Catalina

When upgrading to ‌macOS Catalina‌, the installer will show a list of recently used apps that are 32-bit so you know what to expect before installing.

After viewing this list, you can choose to either cancel or continue with the installation.

‌macOS Catalina‌ also shows a stop symbol over the icon of 32-bit apps in the Finder, so you know that the app isn't going to open.

Aperture

With the release of ‌macOS Catalina‌, Aperture is going to stop working. Apple warned Aperture users in April 2019 that the software won't run in future versions of macOS, starting with ‌macOS Catalina‌.

If you're an Aperture user, you'll have to transition to alternate photo editing and management software, such as Adobe's Lightroom. Aperture is not 32-bit, but Apple is phasing it out all the same.

Affected Media Formats

Certain media files that use older formats and codecs are also not compatible with macOS after macOS Mojave due to the 64-bit transition, and you will need to convert some iMovie and Final Cut Pro X libraries. Incompatible media files were created using codecs that rely on QuickTime 7, and while macOS Mojave has QuickTime 7 frameworks, future versions of macOS will not.

Apple has a full list of media formats that are going to be affected by the transition available in a support document.

Continuing to Use 32-Bit Apps

In macOS Mojave and earlier versions of macOS like High Sierra, you can continue to use your 32-bit apps. If you have a 32-bit app that you absolutely depend on, you're going to want to think twice before upgrading to ‌macOS Catalina‌.

Remove apps from mac completely. CPU Load is the percentage of CPU capacity that is currently being used by all User and System processes. The graph in the screenshot above moves from right to left at a frequency that is set in View > Update Frequency. The red portion of the graph shows the percentage of the total CPU capability that is currently being used by the system processes.

Idle is the percentage of CPU capacity that is not being used.

You can also access the Memory pane which contains memory usage information that is presented similar to the CPU pane. You can view how much RAM is on your Mac and how much memory is being used by all of the apps and processes.

I have a G4 1Ghz iBook 14' with 640Mb Ram and 60Gb HDD. I'm runnign 10.3.9 with all the latest updates. Even after doing a fresh install recently my CPU usage is always still at 100% split between user and system. This occurs even on first boot with no programs running. The main users seem to be windows server and finder. I find it hard to believe that i never have any idle percentage. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Could it be soem sort of programs running that i'm not aware of? (i know spyware doesnt exist) Can u clean out the system? Does anyone know how to fix this as it's killing my battery life badly.
