Hi there, this is for Ishaan! I think it was you who answered my anon ask like a year, maybe more ago? It was about being feminine but thinking I’m a trans man, and wondering if I’m too old at 23 to just have figured out I’m trans. I also sent an ask saying I was thinking about changing my name to Jon.

Guess what? I’ve realised after much deliberation that I AM trans. More transmasc non binary than a binary trans man, but nonetheless trans. I’ve changed my name socially (to Jonathan!), and tomorrow I start a new job presenting with my new name and he/they pronouns. I plan on pursuing low dose testosterone very soon (just need to find a good GP) and have been thinking a lot about coming out to my family (I’m out to my friends/therapist/strangers). So much of my daily distress that I had no idea was to do with gender has been alleviated just by changing my name. I’m excited to see more of who I am and who I become as I transition.

Gender validation moment: just before work today someone asked me the time, I had my phone out and told them, and they added "your hair looks nice."

I've been keeping it short for a few months now (afab and always had it long), but still present mostly fem, and it feels so good when that's the thing people notice. Not "you look pretty" or "cute shirt" or whatever, but "the one way you have to show you're cisn't while still closeted? yeah that looks good" 🥰

Honestly cutting your hair is so empowering! I've been getting the same validation from people saying my short hair looks good. That too I'm embracing my natural curls so I feel all together more me!

so im non-binary (transmasc) and dating a cishet guy. he still IDs as straight, which ig is whatever, because he defines it as attraction to genders different than his own (so basically everyone other than binary men). the thing is, i view out relationship as explicitly queer, my attraction to men (and thus him) is queer. he really doesnt give this stuff much thought, and hes said he doesnt want to because hes comfortable in his identity. so i just wonder where that leaves me. is our relationship still queer when one person sees it like that and the other just... doesnt think about it?

its so odd bc other than him i could never see myself with someone who IDs as straight, even tho im bi, i feel like all my attraction is queer due to being nby. weve just been together for 2 years (so before i accepted my identity) and it just kinda.. happened. i love him a lot and foresee this as a very long term relationship, so this is more just about how we fit into queer spaces and how we define our relationship. i only sometimes feel invalidated by this, as im not like... entirely a different gender, i am somewhat masc aligned, but im not like a binary guy so thats how i think ab it. i just mostly wish he was more open to viewing us as queer i guess? its weird being with a straight person ig haha. ig i just wanted a second opinion on all this. thanks!

In my opinion, any relationship you’re in is automatically queer because you’re bisexual. I’m pan, and I’ve always been scared that if I get into a relationship with the opposite sex then I won’t be accepted in queer spaces anymore because I’ll be basically straight in a straight relationship.

Just because you are two different genders in a relationship doesn’t make the relationship straight, because you aren’t straight. A straight relationship is two straight people, a queer relationship is anything but that.

But at the same time, if your boyfriend views it as straight he has the right to think of it that way too.

So I think that the relationship is queer, but he can think of it as straight if that’s what he wants. If this really does bother you, it seems like something you guys should talk about and maybe try to settle on a middle ground.

Because although it might not seem like a huge deal to the common hetero, for a lot of queer people their sexual identity means a lot to them. I personally wouldn’t ever want to be in a “straight” relationship because I am queer. That’s a big part of my identity as a person. But if that makes your boyfriend uncomfortable, then you probably need to just try and find some label that you both are comfy with.

No matter what label you put on your relationship, your boyfriend is valid to identify as straight, and you are valid in identifying as bi. That won’t change even if you label your relationship as queer or straight.

(I feel like my response came off a little hostile but just know that wasn’t my intention)(my brain is currently scrambled)

Hey, I'm planning on coming out to my therapist as a trans man but im really nervous and dont know what to say, do you have any tips?

Hey there !

So, i don't know what country you live in and how the general public's stance on queer people is. but your therapist is supposed to be someone who you trust and can talk about everything with. it is very unlikely that they'll react badly, and if they do, they're not a good therapist.

most therapists know about trans* people since trans* people are sadly statistically more likely to go to therapy than cis folks.

personally, i have been in therapy for 4 years with different therapists. my first one knew i was trans* before i did. all therapists i came out to reacted well, or in the worst case, neutral. i did have to explain my gender a few times, but that's because i'm nonbinary, which is less known than binary trans people.

from my experience, the worst that could happen is that your therapist directs you to another therapist who is more experienced in working with trans* folks. it's only happened to me once that me being trans* was waved off as "looking for attention", but the dude was a nurse, not a licensed therapist.

i know it's not that easy, but just simply stating you're trans should do it. they'll probably want to know how long you've known, what made you realise it etc, but that's it.
