Watching the Red White and Royal Blue movie and god it is just so refreshing to have two adult men fall in love and have the stereotypically fairy tale romantic affair like a politically charged hallmark movie

Like absolutely nothing against teen queer coming of age stories, I adore them and they’re so important but it’s just so nice to have adults falling in love, adults with plans and motivations but still figuring things out a little, real actual adults with hobbies and passions and accomplishments, getting to just be queer and in love and they are the main characters within their own lives

And they’re in a rom-com, a full on rom-com with the cheesiness and the drama and the sweet, fluffy romance where everything is resolved in the end and it’s queer. It never shies away from the queerness, they make out, they have sex, they gaze lovingly into each other’s eyes, they make silly jokes and get to adore each other

It’s so refreshing, it’s so nice to have this type of story, this story for the adult queers, a comfort film like to Mamma Mia, that’s full of heart and enjoyment and fun, with queerness at the forefront

billy and steve finally hooking up in that summer of ‘85.

it becomes a routine. after work, billy heads straight for steve’s house, still in his lifeguard uniform. steve rolls up about thirty minutes later - red, white and blue from head-to-toe. says something like, “remind me to give you the spare key” when they meet between their parked cars, as though that doesn’t put a storm in billy’s damn heart and give him ideas.

they’re so hungry for each other that they don’t bother with showers. don’t even bother stripping out of their uniforms properly. billy’s shorts are down to his ankles while steve’s are pushed just down to his knees. billy gives steve some shit about the white socks he’s wearing, but he doesn’t really have a leg to stand on when he realises the whistle he uses at the pool is still around his neck and not hanging on that peg in the locker room where it belongs.

steve smells like sugar and cream and billy smells like chlorine. it’s a strange mix but it works. billy’s glistening and warm to the touch from sitting in the sun all day, while steve is as cool as the desserts he’s been scooping.

fire and ice, burning and melting until they’re nothing but two puddles soaking steve’s mattress, summer sun long since set.
