“The Land of Lost Things” Mixed Media on Canvas, 6’x9’ Dec ‘21-Jan ‘22 (POR) The visual for this concept came to me after reading the short story “A Bird Trusts its Wings” after which I juxtaposed elements from my own mediums of collage and photography. I wanted to merge both of our worlds into a simplistic yet maximalist diagram that symbolizes a place in our subconscious—a place where our forgotten ideas go. This has been one of the most tedious pieces I have worked on in a long time. This isn’t because it was a particularly complex project, but more due to the size (it’s several feet taller than myself), endless hours spent, and the techniques that it required. Defining myself as a multimedia artist means that I’m always experimenting with new materials, new forms of doing things, and questioning the way I interpret certain ideas. Through this project, I revisited techniques in painting, small-scale metals, origami, printing, collaging of different fabrics, and I even learned how to sew! If you pay attention to the layering specifically, you can see how many different layers I applied in each of the details. I’ve always had a fondness for abstraction. I always think of ways in which I can portray that void inside our heads-a space that bends with time. Castor & Pollux Materials: Mixed media Size: 10 x 10 inches x 1.5 inches, black framed (set of 2) Circa: 2021 Showcasing some of my latest oddities at the Boys & Girl’s Club for DON Weekend this Saturday Aug 28th 1-6pm. The work will be featured for the next month along with some other local Detroit talent! This 3D set continues my never-ending obsession with twin duality. As told in Greek mythology, the constellation of Gemini was made up of two inseparable twins: Castor and Pollux - the latter of which is immortal. Each Gemini sibling had its own instinctive properties of rebirth, although Pollux was known more for his divine and vital nature (marked by the blue stone in the center) the twins are often depicted with skull caps, which are said to be the remnants of the egg form which they hatched. They were destined to alternate between the realms of earth and the heavens. This design draws influence from the solemn era of our current pandemic that gave the world a profound perspective on our vulnerability to decay and transcend nevertheless. The lizards used in these frames are desiccated ethically and are meant as a symbol of the roaring human ability to survive and transform in the harshest conditions. “the fragile resilience needed to evolve”. Its the strongest when I need guidance in parts of my life. They’re not always positive, and can sometimes air on the side of the abstract, the morbid, and the coincidental. This comes and goes depending on how much I allow myself to connect with “the other side” right before I go to sleep. Does anyone else feel really strong connections to their dreams? Each unique print is carefully signed, numbered, and framed in UV-protected glass. There is only one print of each so far.
