My mental health is bad right now
I don't know what I should do. My brain is so toxic to myself that it makes life feel impossible. I keep trying to distract myself from these thoughts. I keep trying to bury myself in a world of fiction when I wish I was already six feet deep. I don't understand why I'm like this. I can't help but think it would be better if I was dead. I don't belong here.

So... I found this and now it keeps coming to mind. You hear about "life-changing writing advice" all the time and usually its really not—but honestly this is it man.
I'm going to try it.

Saving for reference~
OC questions that helped me with characterization:
On a scale of “is occasionally forced to bathe” to “Instagram model with sponsors to hoe for” how involved is your OC’s Skincare routine?
What are your OC’s food preferences (flavors/textures/spiciness/calories/ when and how they eat) and how did they get that way?
What’s something pointless/petty/unimportant that IRRATIONALLY ANNOYS THE HELL out of your OC?
What’s your OC’s response to being asked for money by a homeless person?
Does your OC get lost easily? What do they do when they do get lost?
What would STOP your OC from Doing The Right Thing in a tense situation?
Realistically, could your OC (in their normal circumstances- i.e. at thier own house/battlecamp/spaceship etc.) keep a small child alive for a week if they had to?  A Dog?  A Houseplant? A rock with a  smiley face painted on?
If your OC had to take the S.A.T. tomorrow with one night to prep, how would they do?  both emotionally and academically.
What would cause your OC to chose to do something petty/pointlessly cruel?
On a scale of “Complete and Justified nervous breakdown” to “Conquer The Entire Galaxy and become an Immortal God-Emperor”, how well would your OC handle being abducted by Aliens?
What song is 100% garunteed to get your OC beyond turnt and will be sung loudly and emabarrasingly, either in public or the shower?
What perfectly-normal-to-them-thing does your OC do that confuses/pisses off/terrifies thier neighbors?
Under what circumstances would your OC appear naked in public?
What thing did your OC’s parents do that your OC wishes they had a better explanation for?
How often does your OC “zone out” or do things on autopilot and how severe have the problems that have arisen from that been?
How strong or weak is your OC’s Impulse control? What’s the worst thing that happened becuase of thier Impulsivity or inability to be so?
How does your OC sabotage themselves?
What’s the trashiest item in your OC’s wardrobe, when was the last time they wore it and why do they still have it?
How Dehydrated is your OC right now? Are they going to fix this?
What’s your OC smell like?  no, not that “Vanilla and Anxiety” evocative stuff, realistically.  Body odor? what have they been touching all day? When was thier last shower? Did they put on any kind of artificial scent?

one of the most common & most easily resolved mistakes i see in developing writers is writing details that are beyond the scope of their pov character. this most noticeably happens by having the character make an observation of themselves that they just physically would not be able to see.
what do i mean by this? consider i'm writing from the 3rd person limited pov of a character name julia. if i write "julia laughed, her eyes twinkling with mischief," that doesn't make sense. unless she just so happens to be standing in front of a mirror, she can't see her own eyes, and a twinkle in your eye isn't something you could feel, so it doesn't make sense to have that description come from your pov character.
or consider this example, again with our pov character julia. "julia's face flushed a deep, vibrant red." again, unless she's standing in front of a mirror, this doesn't make sense. if, however, you wrote "julia's face grew warm, her cheeks beginning to prickle with heat," that totally makes sense, because it's a physical sensation that she can feel.
if you're with me so far, let's make it a little more advanced. there are some details your character would be aware of, sure, but just probably wouldn't make frequent note of. with beginner writers, i often see this as repeated references to their pov character's eye color. like, i am aware of my own eye color, but given that i'm not looking into my own eyes most of the time, it's unlikely that i think about it very much unless it's especially relevant. so with our pov character julia, the phrase "julia was trembling, her blue eyes trained on the ground" is odd, unless there's a good reason for julia to be thinking of her own eye color in that moment. "julia was trembling, her eyes trained on the ground" just makes a lot more sense. obviously you have to describe your pov character's appearance at some point, but once it's out of the way, having your character repeatedly make note of their own eye color when not looking at themselves usually isn't necessary and breaks the immersion in the character's pov.
all that being said, there are of course exceptions to every writing rule & instances where a character doing something like repeatedly referencing their own eye color could be a deliberate choice. i think a really conceited, vain character saying "i raised my enormous, emerald green eyes, blinking back the glimmer of tears," would lowkey be hilarious and great characterization, for example. but unless there's a good reason for characters to be consistently noting details of their own appearance like this, i advise you to try to avoid it unless necessary.

I needed to read this today
A note on the topic of trauma that I personally found helpful in accepting the idea that I am a trauma victim is that one of the most widely accepted facts in the field of trauma research is that abuse is often not the common factor in whether somebody will develop ptsd.
Many people can go through awful things without developing trauma based disorders as long as they receive compassion and support in processing those events as they happen. The most common factor in developing something like ptsd is emotional neglect. And emotional neglect on it’s own can be enough.
Whatever you went through was enough I promise, you’re not overreacting. Abuse and neglect are traumatic at any level, you don’t need to have gone through the worst possible experience you can think of to develop ptsd. If it hurt you then it hurt you.
