It was horribly cold out.

Too cold.

The walls of their shared house were doing their best at keeping in heat until the repairman would arrive to fix the heater. Until then, eveyone who spoke would have their breath turned into small clouds of air.

Jax was doing his best to keep himself warm, wearing the thickest jacket he owned. He knew how bad it would go for him if his arms got any colder, and was doing his best to conserve heat.

”Jax!! Babe!!“ Came the call from Johnny, coddled in five blankets on the couch.

”Yes, Cage?” He said, setting down the coffee cup he was using to warm his metal hands. Jax watched as the movie star struggled to get himself untangled from his own blanket prison, and stood only to almost trip on the blankets around his ankles.

”Are you cold??”

”Not entirely,” he responded, catching Johnny in his arms before he almost tumbled again. “How are you holding up?”

”Pffft- whatevers. You look like you’re shivering, though. So I wanna help.” Johnny wrapped his arms around Jax’s neck, sharing his built up warmth.

”Lucky me, I guess,” Jax said, leaning into the hug. He forgot himself for a moment and set his unconvered hands on Johnny’s lower back.

The reaction he got was immediate. Johnny yipped at the feeling of the cold fingers on his back, and Jax immediately broke the hug.

”My bad, I should’ve worn gloves before holding you.” He said sheepishly, feeling guilty for surprising Johnny.

”Ehh, I don’t mind. Please, let me help.” Johnny said, holding his own hands out to Jax.

The man hesitated, knowing his hands were going to be too cold. But he knew Johnny wouldn’t leave him alone until he complied.

”Alright alright, I accept your help,” he sassed, interlocking fingers with Johnny. The actor immediately flinched at the cold, but he covered it to save his friend any guilt.

After all, it was an honor to be holding Jax’s hands.

He smiled, closing his fingers around the other man’s, “I’ll warm you up, babe, don’t worry!”

”What would I ever do without you?”

Johnny couldn’t believe himself.

Sure, he’d been with Sonya all nine months, was the one who drove her to the hospital, and was the one holding her hand while she went through labor (and unfortunately had to be escorted out when they realized she had dislocated his wrist one hour into her delivery).

But standing here, only a few days after returning from the hospital, and seeing the little jellybean in person was something he never could have expected.

Even now, as he held her in her arms, at almost two AM when she woke up wailing to the night, he couldn’t believe himself.

I’m the dad...I’m the dad.

Unbenowst to the sleeping world, Johnny Cage was in the pastel pink room, eyes collecting small tears, as he smiled down at his little fussing baby girl. Little Cassie sputtered at her father, very tiny and just…so heart twistingly adorable.

She raised her little baby hands in the air, searching for her papa while her eyes were tightly closed spilling out tiny tears, almost mimicking her father at the moment. Knowing it was her dad holding her from instinct.

Johnny offered his much bigger hands to his daughter, and she immediately grabbed on to him with such a force it was evident she was Sonya’s daughter.

Johnny could cry again. Cassie finally calmed down enough to stop crying, knowing her father was here and she wasn’t going to let him go.

Johnny knew love before. He knew it in Sonya when he asked her to marry him. He knew it in Liu Kang when he would go out with him every week. And he knew it in Raiden when he’d stand by his side.

But this love was behind anything he could ever know. And he knew in his heart that he’d do anything to protect it. Her.

As her tiny hand held his big hand.
