The search has ended for the Uruguayan plane that crashed in the Andes with the Old Christians rugby team aboard. In the required ten days, 66 search and rescue missions were conducted, using 17 planes from the Chilean Air Force as well as planes from the Uruguayan and Argentinian Air Force but to no avail. Search efforts will resume at the start of next year, when the thaw will give better visibility for finding the wreckage. The Chilean Air Force's rescue service has reported that in 34 air accidents that have occurred in the Andes, no survivors have ever been found. - La Sociedad de la Nieve/Society of the Snow (2023)

The doctors
Roberto Canessa was in his second year of medical school. Gustavo Zerbino was in his first. They were both only 19 years-old.
They administered first aid when the plane crashed and monitored the wounded until the last day.

Gustavo didn’t continue his studies because, according to him, he had seen too much death already.

Missouri was once a hub for trans surgery. It was actually the site of the first phalloplasty that allowed for full erections nearly 50 years ago. Today, however, it is among the worst states for trans people trying to access care (clipping from The Times, 1977).

"Like Ireland, Palestine unfree will never be at peace" - Pádraic MacCoitir (1/4/2024)
Inspired by Padraig Pearse's graveside oration at the funeral of Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa - " They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything; but the fools, the fools, the fools!– they have left us our Fenian dead; and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace"

"He never fell into self pity or dispair. There was something noble and selfless in Numa. Everybody saw it. "
"From the first moments, I knew that if we would ever escape these mountains, Numa would have something to do with it, and I wasn't surprised for a second that he had volunteered to go on the climb."
"Numa has impressed me from the start, and as the days passed my respect for him had deepened. Although he had been a stranger to most of us before the crash, he had quickly won the friendship and admiration of all the survivors. Numa made his presence felt through quote heroics: no one fought harder or our survival, no one inspired more hope, and no one showed more compassion for those who suffered most. Even though he was a new friend for most of us, I believe Numa was the best loved man on the mountain."
- Fernando "Nando" Parrado on Numa Turcatti in his novel, Miracle in the Andes.

I've been sitting on this for a while. It was just a little drawing exercise/study that got a bit out of control. This was going to be part of a set (and there's some that are more tongue-in-cheek) but then I learned that Marcelo's birthday was March 26th.
And as a fellow March baby, I felt it deserved to be celebrated in some way. :)

"During breaks, he would coax them to play charades and other games. Whenever anyone was laughing, it was usually Coco's doing. The sound of laughter in those mountains was like a miracle, and I admired Coco for his courage - lightening so many spirirts when, like the rest of us, he was so weary and afraid"
- Fernando "Nando" Parrado on Gustavo "Coco" Nicholich in his novel, Miracle in the Andes.

On the photo on the left they are standing together, with Roberto on the left and Nando on the right - the order is repeated in the second photo, although they are passing a ball between each other, mid-game.
