Do people still argue back and forth via letters to the editor? Just learned that Harold Bride and Charles Lightoller got into a little bit of a spat in the 30s over Lightoller's characterization of Jack Phillips

Who's the most surprising survivor of the Titanic? Whatcha got for me?
I'm not sure if they would be considered 'surprising,' but two of the most interesting were the Navratil brothers.
Michael Navratil Jr. and Edmund Navratil were 3 and 2 respectively, when their parents started divorce precedings. While a judge was considering who would receive custody, their father, Michael Sr., would up and kidnap the boys in order to immigrate from France to the USA as second class passengers. They sailed together using a stolen passport and assumed names.
Following the collision, the two boys were placed in Collapsible D, while their father went down with the ship. They were hence known as the Titanic Orphans, due to their age and fake names making it difficult to locate their parents. They stayed in New York City until their mother was located via newspaper articles about them, and she arrived in the US a little over a month later.

just a reminder to COMPLETELY boycott Eurovision this year; Azerbaijan and Israel, despite committing genocide, are STILL allowed to compete & have NOT been banned. by refusing to ban both countries, Eurovision is profiting off of the genocide of Palestinians and Armenians.
do not listen to the artists. do not pirate or stream the artists' music, and this applies to ALL the artists who are competing and performing this year. do not listen to the songs on ANY platform, do not give them ANY attention.
write to your broadcasters and tell them you REFUSE to watch the channels until they recognise the Armenian and Palestinian genocides & that you find it disgusting how they are allowing Eurovision despite Azerbaijan and Israel's entries.
do NOT give eurovision OR the competing artists ANYTHING but silence.
boycott ALL of eurovision.

Actually, I think survivor(s) you could definitely consider surprising are the 23 (possibly close to 30) men who managed to make it through the night by floating on top the upside-down collapsible B. This included the junior Marconi operator, Harold Bride, who only survived because a second class passenger named Jack Thayer held him on the boat.
The boat slowly began to sink as the night wore on and they had to start shifting their weight back and forth in order to keep it afloat.

Did you know that the first person to receive the Titanic's distress signal might have been a 14 year old boy?
Jimmy Myrick was an apprentice working the Cape Race lighthouse under two other Marconi operators, Walter Gray and J.C.R. Godwin. The two had left Myrick alone (going against protocol of not leaving an apprentice in the station without a trained operator) and in that short period of time the first CQD (precursor to the SOS signal) was received. Myrick was sworn to secrecy due to the previously stated protocol, so as to protect Gray and Godwin's jobs. Myrick wouldn't reveal any of this until he was an old man. There's no solid proof of this, but it's an interesting piece of lore.
Two bonus facts:
The Myick family had actually worked the Cape Race lighthouse since the 1870s, and continued to work it (I believe) well into the 21st century.
2. Walter Gray had gone to school and was friends with Jack Phillips, the Marconi operator that didn't survive the sinking, and he would have been in contact with him throughout the night.

textiles isn't my area of expertise but i have some vague concepts/thoughts about the noldor styling themselves the same way they did in valinor, but how the available flora in beleriand would change the materials/dyes they used, plus the influence of techniques and styles/designs from the people living in beleriand

it’s all “accidental hand touch” this and “brief longing gaze” that, where’s my support at for “reaching up and fixing someone’s collar for them” crew??
the intimacy disguised as helpfulness! the lingering contact! the optional subdued “you look nice” as they stand too close!!

He couldn't stomach the thought of Fingon witnessing this one last act in service to the Oath, and so he let what remained of him rest in a field of white.
