my tears ricochet (j.t.)
Tumblr media
Summary: after years of being at odds with Jamie Tartt, it takes one moment for the walls to come crumbling down
SHE'S BACK BITCHES you can thank Ted Lasso for the inspiration because I just couldn't watch the show and not write anything for Jamie Tartt
AN: angsty fluff is my go to so what better way to make a comeback than my usual. inspired by the scene where Jamie's dad comes into the locker room after the Man City match
"Jamie, why are you doing this?" You questioned your boyfriend of two years. He had just told you he was breaking up with you, completely out of the blue.
"If i'm going to go pro I can't have things from my past weighing me down. Not if I want to be the best." He said. You were stunned at his words.
Did he really believe that? Did he really believe you would weigh him down? "No, no, this isn't you. This is your dad talking. You promised me you would never hurt me, not like this." You replied.
"I lied then. We were kidding ourselves if we thought this would last after school. We're just kids, this was never going to be anything serious." Jamie rebutted. You scoffed at his words. You didn't want to believe that Jamie would actually feel that way.
"It was serious to me. It was serious to you three months ago when you said you wanted me by your side for as long as I'd have you." You replied. "I told you what you wanted to hear." Jamie said simply.
That was the figurative dagger in your back. You had to stop yourself from doing anything you'd regret in the morning. That being punching Jamie in the nose and dealing with the consequences of a fractured hand.
"Go then." You said through tears. "Y/N," Jamie started. "You want to go? Then go. But don't expect me to answer when you call." You snapped, slamming the door in his face.
That fight was four years ago and yet it still plagued your nightmares. The hurtful things Jamie said to you still playing through your head whenever you were ready to move on officially.
Sure you dated guys here and there, but the second you felt that it could become serious, hearing Jamie say he told you what you wanted to hear played on a loop.
You were angry he still had that much control over you. And your current occupation didn't help either. You had just started as the athletic trainer for AFC Richmond. Which meant you saw Jamie on a daily basis.
He tried to start a conversation with you, try to make up for the things he did but you never gave him the time of day.
It was your first official month at AFC Richmond and you had succeeded at avoiding Jamie at all costs. You'd either be busy, gone home early, or simply said no. All resulting in one of the other physios treating him.
He knew what you were doing. So that's why he had to corner you in the treatment room to even get face time with you. He walked into the room and closed the door, standing in front of it so you couldn't leave.
“What the hell are you doing?" You questioned. "You won't talk to me." Jamie answered. "Did you ever think that I had a very good reason for not wanting to talk to you?" You asked. "Y/N, Jamie started.
"You don't get to do this. You don't get to trap me in here and force me to talk to you. You made this decision and now you have to live with it. You can't just come back into my life like you didn't break my heart." You said with an eerily calm tone.
"That's not who I am anymore." Jamie said. "Well the person you are now, has to pay for the mistake of the person you were." You said.
You looked at him, signaling him to step aside so you could leave. the two of you just started at each other for a moment and it took everything in your power not to fold and fall into his arms.
But eventually he did move, letting you walk through the door. Jamie didn't have many regrets in his life but doing what he did to you was by far the worst thing and his biggest regret.
The night he broke up with you, Jamie let his dad get into his head, saying all of these things about how you'll bring him down. He can't go pro with a girlfriend from home. He'll get bored of you anyway, so he should just cut you loose.
Jamie didn't know why he listened to his father in the first place. His mother had told him that you would be the thing that grounded him when he finally had his big break.
He didn't have you, and he turned into a huge prick. And that day you were right, he was paying for the mistakes that version of himself made.
__
The match against Man City at Wembley did not have the outcome everyone wanted. Richmond lost and no one was feeling good about it.
You were packing up heat packs and resistance bands when the locker room door opened.
"Uh, Mr. Tartt? You have a visitor. Says he's your father." The security man said.
Instinctually, Jamie and you locked eyes, you gave your head a slight shake. Telling Jamie that seeing his father was the last thing he needed.
Jamie sighed before giving the man permission to bring him in. You despised Jamie's father. You always hated how the man treated his son and you hated how Jamie just sat their and took it.
Now, Jamie was allowing this man to kick him while he's already down.
"Hey, it's a tough one lads, it's tough one. But no shame to it, because you know we only ever beat everybody we play." Jamie's father laughed.
"You pups had no chance. And there he is, my son. My own flesh and blood. Poor Jamie, my son. Now, maybe I'm thinking, his heart's still in Manchester and that's why he missed that sitter in the first half. You absolutely balled it. You balled it. What were you thinking? I'm only kidding." James continued.
You tensed when he started shoving Jamie slightly. You weren't close enough to hear what was said, only hearing Jamie say "don't speak to me like that."
It all escalated so quickly after that. James turned around and began yelling at the team, shouting that they were amateurs. Jamie turned away from his father and James pushed him harshly.
Jamie turned back around and punched his father in the nose, hard enough to send him to the ground.
Before James could retaliate against Jamie, Coach Beard picked him up and escorted him outside.
For a second, nobody moved. It felt like everyone stopped breathing, just staring at Jamie. You included. You could see it on his face, he was about to break.
Roy started to move but you beat him to it. You wrapped your arms around Jamie and he was taken aback at first. But then he grabbed onto you tightly and cried into your shoulder.
"You're okay, I got you." You whispered to him. In response his hold around you only got tighter, like he was afraid you'd evaporate in his arms.
It wasn't the first time you had to comfort Jamie after run ins with his father. When he was playing football for the school team, his dad got on him about everything.
There were many nights where Jamie would sneak into your bedroom because he just felt better with you. You made things feel better, even if only for a moment.
After a few seconds of just holding him, he pulled away from you and neither of you had noticed the team dispersed.
"The team is probably waiting for you on the bus." You said, breaking the silence. "Yeah, yeah. You're right." Jamie replied. "I'll see you on the bus, Jamie." You told him as you grabbed your bag of supplies.
For the third time, he watched you walk away from him. But this time was different. Even after what he did, you were still there for him after his dad barged in.
That night, after you had driven home, got in your pajamas and sat on your sofa with a glass of wine, the last thing you'd expect was to have someone knock at your door.
And hell probably froze over because Jamie was standing on your doorstep.
"Jamie?" You questioned. "Can we talk? Please?" He asked, almost pleaded. You blamed your fatigue on you giving in so quickly, but you let him inside nonetheless.
"I let you down. That night at your house, I let you down." He spoke. "I-I let me dad control me and I did the last thing I ever wanted to do. You meant the world to me and I let you go. I'm sorry, Y/N." He added.
You didn't really know what to say to him after that. So you just took his hand and brought him to the sofa, where he sat down next to you.
"What you did really hurt me. I thought I did something wrong, like I didn't make you happy anymore. I tried to move on, I went on a few dates but every time I thought you were in the past, I just kept hearing what you said to me that night." You said.
"You didn't deserve that. You didn't deserve any of that." Jamie replied. "You're right. I didn't deserve any of that. But that's not who you are anymore, is it?" You asked.
"The Jamie I knew, the Jamie you were, would have never stuck up to your dad the way you did. I never understood why but I always supported you. But the Jamie you are now, you stuck up for yourself. You didn't let him bully you and I'm really, really proud of you." You continued.
"But you said-" He started. "I know what I said. I know I said that you had to pay for those mistakes. I was wrong." You interrupted.
"I love you, Y/N. I don't think I ever stopped loving you even though I definitely tried." Jamie confessed. "How about this? We start over. Let me get to know the new Jamie." You said.
A smile formed on Jamie's face as he held out his hand. "Hi, I'm Jamie." He said. You laughed lightly as you took his hand. "I'm Y/N." You replied, shaking his hand. "Would you like to go on a date with me?" Jamie asked.
"Yes, yes I would." You said.
And you did go on the date with Jamie. You learned who this new Jamie really was. He was kind, caring, still cocky as ever but he cared about others.
He had best friends in, Sam, Isaac and even Roy though he didn’t really phrase it like that. Jamie stopped letting the opinions of the world define him and only the opinions of those he loved and valued.
You felt incredibly proud of Jamie and this new person he had become and this Jamie was the one you fell in love with.

Baby on Board (e.b)
Tumblr media
Summary: you find out your pregnant with Buck’s baby and have no idea how to tell him or how he will react.
AN: IM BAAAAACK (one time thing) you can thank 911 for that because we all know i have a soft spot for Evan Buckley
It felt like the world became one big blur. Everything around you seemingly fell out of focus as you stared down at the positive pregnancy test in your hand. A mixture of fear, nerves and excitement settled into your stomach.
In any other instant, you’d be ecstatic. If you were following your life plan correctly, you’d be married and have a steady job before getting pregnant.
But you weren’t following your life plan at all. You were in a steady relationship for a few years but you didn’t know if marriage was in the cards yet. You didn’t know how Buck felt about marriage. You definitely didn’t know how he was going to feel about a baby. How were you supposed to tell him?
You thought a baby would for sure ruin whatever plans Buck had. You were terrified of his reaction. You loved Buck more than anything and of course you wanted a family with him. But was it too soon?
In a wave of panic, you grabbed your purse and your keys and left the apartment. You had no idea where to go at first, all of your friends were Buck’s friends.
Eddie was always nice to you and you were closer to him than anyone else. You had hoped he wouldn’t be angry or upset that you were putting him in this situation but you needed advice.
The only reason you knew Eddie was home was because him and Buck were on alternating schedules. Eddie worked overnight and Buck worked during the day.
When Eddie opened the door, he was surprised to see you standing on his porch with tears in your eyes. “Y/N? Are you okay?” Eddie asked, grabbing hold of your hand entry and brought you inside.
“I need your help, actually. Well, more like advice.” You spoke. “What’s going on?” Eddie questioned. “I’m pregnant. Obviously it’s Buck’s but how am I supposed to tell him? We haven’t talked about kids yet, hell we haven’t even talked about marriage that much. I just, I don’t know what to do.” You explained, the tears falling.
Eddie took you in his arms and hugged you tightly, mainly just to calm you down. “First, take some breaths. You’re going to be okay. Second, I think Buck is going to be ecstatic.” He said. “But what if-“ you started before Eddie cut you off. “No buts. Sure it’s not the most conventional way to have a baby, but I hear how Buck talks about you. He talks about like you’re the center of the universe. Technically, you are, at least to him,” Eddie started.
“Buck loves you. There is nothing that would make him not love you. And he was born to be a dad and you’re going to give him that.” He finished. You sniffled and wiped the tears from your face.
“What if you’re wrong?” You whispered. “Hey, you came here for a reason. You know I’m not wrong.” He said. “How did Shannon tell you? If you don’t mind me asking.” You asked. “She knew I was enlisting. So she just said it, didn’t want to wait any longer. Especially if I didn’t make it home.” He answered.
You nodded your head slightly and let out a sigh of relief. “I’m scared.” You said. “You are one of the strongest people I know. You can do this.” Eddie said.
You thanked him again, very grateful you went to him other than someone else. Now all you had to do was wait.
Buck was due to be home any minute and you just finished making him his favorite breakfast; waffles, bacon, eggs sunny side up. He’d know something was up because the last time you made him that breakfast was when you told him you loved him for the first time.
“Honey, I’m home.” He teased, entering the home. “Hey, how was your shift?” You asked. “Good, just run of the mill stuff. What’s with the breakfast?” Buck asked.
You were quiet for a moment, that being enough for Buck to see something was up. “Hey, hey, what’s going on?” He asked, approaching you. “I need to tell you something. Something really important.” You said.
“Okay. You’re kind of freaking me out though.” Buck replied with a small laugh.
“I’m pregnant, Buck.” You finally said. At first, the room was quiet and you feared the worst.
The voice in the back of your head said he was going to run out the door and you’ll never see him again.
“You’re pregnant?” He questioned. “I’m sorry.” You said. “No, no, why are you sorry? Don’t be sorry, not for this.” Buck said. You looked up at him and saw the way his eyes lit up and the smile on his face. “You aren’t mad?” You questioned.
“Of course I’m not mad. I could never be mad at you.” Buck said, taking your hand. “I-I know this isn’t the best way for us to start a family but-“ You started. “It’s perfect. You’re perfect.” He interrupted, pulling you into an embrace.
Buck held you for a moment, feeling like everything was falling into place for him. For so long he felt like he was at a standstill. That there was no real progress happening in his life.
But now, he was going to be a dad.
“I love you so much, you know that?” He said sweetly to you. “I love you too.” You replied. Buck leaned in and kissed you sweetly before pulling you into his arms.
“Does anyone else know?” Buck asked. “I-I panicked when I found out and I didn’t know how you’d react so I went to Eddie. So only him.” You said.
Buck smiled widely at you, holding you close. “We’re having a baby.” He said. “Yeah, we’re having a baby.” You replied.
The rest of the night, all Buck could talk about was baby names, if it was going to be a boy or a girl, buying a house. Everything was all falling into place for the both of you.

Hello friends!
This is a post I NEVER thought I’d post ever lol but I am taking (as of right now) an indefinite hiatus from writing and from Tumblr. I have a lot of things going on right now and unfortunately writing has had to take a backseat. I know I have multiple unfinished series and I will get those finished. Once those are done, it’s unlikely I’ll post anything new for the rest of 2023.
I will keep all of my writings public for people to still enjoy and for my followers to re-read their favorites. This account isn’t going anywhere and it will never be deactivated.
This was a sucky choice but I didn’t want to ghost you guys on the off chance I post something new.
I also want to thank the 3,019 of you who have followed this account and supported my writings. You’re all amazing, beautiful people and I’m grateful for each of you.

It Had To Be You 3 (s.h)
Tumblr media
Summary: Steve can’t tell you about Nick, you wouldn’t believe him. So you’re reminded of happier times.
Part 1
Part 2
AN: part 3! I’m so sorry for how long it has taken me to get this written and posted! It has been a very busy couple weeks for me!
Also, I am being that person and changing things halfway through the story lol reader is now Max’s sister! I’ll be going through the other parts and making some changes to better fit that! There’s a scene in Eloise at Christmas Time that I really wanted to include with Max!
Taglist: @johnricharddeacy @gaysludge @freezaz123 @mochminnie @selfdeprecatingnerd @tattooedkiss13 @alana4610 @skewedcherries @pariahsparadise @weasleylovers @jasfadel-blog @evansflowers @bellenotthebeast @justmesadgirl @m-rae23
Max couldn’t believe what she was hearing. This guy who said he loved you, got down on one knee, put a ring on your finger and who was going to be apart of her family, was a con artist.
He tricked you and now he was out to take her stepdads money. Your’s and Max’s mom married an uber rich businessman, Bill, shortly after she was released from the hospital after Vecna. He was nice and treated you and Max well.
It was refreshing having an actually father figure after so long. After a couple years he officially adopted you and Max. So his money equalled your money.
When Steve arrived at the Mayfield’s with Dustin in tow and broke the news, Max was fuming. You and Nick were out with your wedding planner finishing up some details, otherwise she would kill him where he stood.
“And you’re sure you heard him correctly?” Dustin asked. “Of course he did. It’s hard to make up ‘her money is mine.’ God, what a dick.” Max answered. “I’m positive. What the hell are we going to do? We can’t let her marry a guy like that.” Steve said.
“What can we do? Do we think Y/N would believe us?” Dustin questioned. “Maybe we don’t have to tell her about Nick’s plan. We wanted her and Steve back together, maybe we remind her of how great they were together. Remind her of the good times before this asshole came into the picture.” Max suggested.
“Brilliant! And then we can have Steve swoop in and everything will be right in the world.” Dustin said. “Guys, don’t you feel a little guilty about this? I mean, Y/N is going to be livid when she finds out we meddled.” Steve said. “We’re not meddling, we’re helping her. Besides, you want her back right?” The young man replied.
“Well, yeah, but-“ Steve started. “Then let us do this.” Max cut him off.
Steve begrudgingly agreed to their plan. He wanted what’s best for you, regardless if it was with him or someone else and he knew the best wasn’t with Nick.
You and Max arrived at the wedding dress boutique for you final fitting before the wedding. Though after your night with Steve, you were starting to question everything.
“Hey, are you okay?” Max asked you. “Yeah, yeah. I’m okay, just thinking.” You answered. “Thinking about what?” She questioned. “Thinking about how you haven’t worn a dress in over a decade.” You laughed. Max laughed with you as she looked at her reflection.
Thankfully you weren’t one of those brides who wants their bridesmaids to look ugly. You picked a nice, simple blush colored dress for Max to wear.
“Did you ever think you’d be here?” Max asked. “Honestly, no. This sounds stupid but I always pictured that Billy would be here.” You spoke honestly.
You and Max hadn’t talked about Billy since after Vecna. Everything changed after the demodogs and Max finally stood up to Billy. Though he was still a prick, he wasn’t cruel to you or her. He was just annoying step-brother. You never wanted him to die.
“Really?” Max asked. “He was an ass, but he was changing. I just wish he got the chance.” You said. “Me too.” Max replied.
The both of you shook off the sad feeling when the tailor brought in your dress.
Once you wearing it, a small part of you felt suffocated in the fabric. As if your body was telling you that this wasn’t what you really wanted.
“Do you remember that movie dad used to play during Christmas? The one with Bing Crosby and the sisters?” Max asked. “White Christmas? What about it?” You questioned
“I remember that song, the sisters song, and we would put on mom’s old dresses and dance around to that song.” She said with a fond smile. “And then Dustin and Steve found pictures and made us reenact the scene in front of everyone.” You laughed. “But even when we were butchering that song, I have never seen Steve look more in love with you.” Max said.
Your smile faltered slightly. “Yeah, he was pretty good at putting up with me.” You said. “Do you ever miss him?” Max asked. “Yeah. I miss having someone to talk to. When the nightmares get bad or when I can still hear Billy screaming. I can’t tell Nick, he’d think I was crazy. Steve got it, though. He always got it.” You answered.
“But I don’t know if I miss him or just miss someone telling me I’m not crazy.” You added.
“Y/N, I know you better than anyone. You miss Steve, all of Steve. Not just having someone to talk to because you have me. I know you think you love Nick but maybe you just love the normalcy. And I’m saying this because your my sister and I love you but let’s face it, we will never be normal. You could tell Nick the truth but odds are, he will think you’re nuts. Since the day he met you, Steve never thought you were nuts.” Max said.
You were ready to respond when you heard Nick’s voice enter the bridal shop.
“Y/N!” He called. “Shoot, he can’t see me in my dress.” You spoke, hiding behind the divider. Nick entered the space and saw Max standing with her arms crossed.
“Ah, well isn’t it the maid of honor.” He said. “Nick.” Max replied. “You don’t like me very much, do you?” Nick asked. “Because I know what you’re doing. The real reason you want to marry my sister. How many people do you owe money to?” Max questioned.
Nick’s face fell upon hearing her words. He didn’t think anyone was on to him. How did your sister find out? Or is she just bluffing?
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Nick said. “I think you do, Nick. I know the game you’re playing and I won’t let you break my sister’s heart or steal my family’s money.” Max warned. “There’s really nothing you can do about it because she won’t believe you.” Nick replied.
“Oh we’ll see about that.” Max told him.
You returned back to the main room, both Nick and Max composing themselves. “Hey, sorry we were running a bit behind.” You said. “That’s alright. How about I take you to lunch?” Nick offered. “Uh sure. Let me just make sure Max-“ You started before she interrupted. “It’s okay. Lucas is already on his way, we have plans.” She said.
You nodded your head and gave her a smile before Nick led you out of the shop.
That night, you were restless. You couldn’t stay asleep longer than an hour and you were grateful you weren’t sharing a room with Nick. You were being plagued with nightmares and no matter how much you told yourself it wasn’t real, it didn’t stop the nightmares.
You were reliving every horrifying and potentially fatal moment from your high school years. The demodogs and holding on to Steve as they all came running towards you in that tunnel. You could hear Billy’s screams as he was being impaled by the Mindflyer. You and Max begging him to stay alive and him only being able to mutter out an ‘I’m sorry.’
Finding Max on the verge of death in Lucas’ arms, begging whatever god was listening not to take her away from you.
You hadn’t had this bad of a night in months and the only person who used to help settle those thoughts, was only a few blocks away.
Getting up quietly, you put on a pair of sneakers and quietly crept out the door. You knew Steve’s parents didn’t live in Hawkins anymore and basically left Steve their house. Making him a glorified house sitter.
The walk was short, and you recalled the late nights in the Summer time you would walk this route with Steve.
Though it was safe and it was Hawkins, you were hyper aware of your surroundings. Waiting for the shadows to become monsters.
You arrived at Steve’s house and hesitated to ring the doorbell. He was probably fast asleep and wouldn’t even answer the door. Maybe once he saw it was you, he wouldn’t answer the door anyways.
You haven’t exactly done anything to deserve his kindness.
“Just ring the doorbell, Y/N.” You told yourself. Right as you were about to press the button, the door opened. Steve was standing in his pajamas and his robe, staring back at you.
“I heard you mumbling to yourself.” He said. “I-I’m sorry. I don’t even know why I came here. I just, I kept hearing the screaming and it only ever stopped when I was with you.” You told him. You didn’t even know why you told him that.
“You never have to apologize. Come in.” Steve spoke. You gave him a grateful smile as you walked into the house. “Does hot chocolate still help?” Steve asked. “You remember?” You questioned. “We spent a lot of late nights together, Y/N. Of course I remember.” He answered.
You sat at the kitchen table as Steve made two mugs of hot chocolate. He could see that you were at a war with yourself. He hated that you had to go through this every night and he knew that being back in town wasn’t helping.
“Want to talk about it?” He asked, setting the mug down. “They haven’t been this bad in a while. It started a few weeks ago when Nick suggested we have the wedding in Hawkins. It’s like I’m reliving everything over again on a constant loop. A-And I know it’s over, I know we defeated Vecna but sometimes my mind likes me to think differently.” You explained.
Steve placed a hand on top of yours and it was first feeling of relief you had felt all night. “Is it Billy again?” He questioned. “Billy, Max, you. I didn’t even like Billy 95% of the time and yet why is he on the list of people care about? Why do I have to watch him die again?” You answered.
“Y/N, I’ve told you this before. Yeah he was an asshole but he was still a part of your family. I don’t think it’s easy to get over seeing your step-brother die.” Steve said.
“I know and maybe this is why I need therapy. I can’t always come to you when I get nightmares.” You replied. “You can always come to me. I know I messed up really bad but I’ll always be there for you no matter what.” Steve told you.
You nodded your head but you weren’t being too convincing. “I rented Top Gun and I know how much you love Meg Ryan.” Steve suggested. “Meg Ryan is in that movie for all of five minutes.” You rebutted.
“Yes, but, Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards. Come on, you know you love Top Gun.” He said. “Okay, fine. We can watch Top Gun. But you owe me waffles.” You replied. “Deal.” Steve said triumphantly.
Yet another evening that you spent with Steve and it felt like old times. But with all of the good feelings came the bad as well. You couldn’t just forget what happened with Steve and Nancy the night in the RV. It was why you left town in the first place.
“I uh, I should go. It’s really late.” You spoke. “What? You were all for this.” Steve questioned. “Yeah but I don’t want to worry anyone.” You said, standing up from the couch. “Y/N, what just happened?” Steve asked.
“I wish everything could go back to the way it was before Vecna but, I don’t think it can. All I can think about is you and Nancy. Y-You told her our dream and a part of me still feels betrayed.” You answered. “Y/N, I apologized for that and for everything. You have been the only person I’ve ever loved and probably the only person I’ll ever love. I was stupid to let you go.” Steve said.
“And I love you too, Steve. But we can’t be together. Nancy will always be there and I can’t go through that again.” You told him before leaving the house.
When you got home, it was dawn. Someone was going to be awake soon and wonder where you had gone.
You gently opened the front door and closed it quietly behind you. “Where were you?” You heard behind you. You jumped slightly and saw Nick standing behind you. “I was, uh, I needed some air.” You lied.
“You were with that guy weren’t you? Steve.” He asked. “What makes you think I was with Steve?” You asked. “Because you were with him the other night. When you were supposed to be at the movies with Max. Also the way you acted when you saw him at the party.” Nick explained.
“Nick,” You started. “You’re marrying me. Not him. I don’t want you to see him anymore.” He said. “He’s my friend, Nick. And you can’t tell me who I can and can’t see.” You retorted.
You attempted to move past him before he grabbed your arm harshly. It was like you went into fight or flight, him grabbing your arm and then seeing Neil do the same thing to Billy. You used all your strength and pushed Nick into the banister.
You both looked at each other with shocked expressions on your faces. “I’m sorry. I-I don’t know where that came from. Just, don’t grab me like that again.” You stammered. “Okay. Then don’t see Steve. And it won’t happen again.” Nick replied.
His threat didn’t go unnoticed as he walked back up the stairs. What you didn’t know, was that Max was spying on your from the kitchen and she had seen the whole thing.
“Y/N,” She called. You looked over at her and knew she saw what had just happened. “Max,” You started. “You can’t marry him.” She said. “He’s not going to do it again.” You said. “I’m not talking about that. There’s something he’s not telling you.” Max said. “What do you mean?” You asked.
Max knew she needed to tell you the truth about what Nick was planning. At this point, it wasn’t about getting you back with Steve anymore. It was about you not marrying someone who was going to lie to you.

It Had To be You 2 (s.h)

Summary: Dustin and the rest of the gang trick you and Steve into reliving your first date
AN: here is part 2!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Part 1
Wedding Countdown: 6 Days
You stared at the number on your mother’s calendar and wished time would just stand still. Was it 6 days already? You felt like you just got engaged and now you’re getting married in 6 days.
But why were you wishing time would stop? You loved Nick, you wanted to marry him so why did you want everything to stop? You thought coming back to Hawkins would make things easier, prove you made the right choice but now you weren’t so sure.
The sound of the phone made you jump from your spot in the kitchen and forced you to shake away whatever thoughts you were having.
“Hello?” You answered. “Y/n! It’s Dustin! The movie theater is having a special showing of ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ and we know it’s your favorite movie so we thought we’d ask if you wanted to come with us.” Dustin rambled.
“Who’s we?” You questioned. “The usual gang. Don’t worry, Steve won’t be there. He’s working.” The boy answered.
You hadn’t seen “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” in a while, plus it would be nice to catch up with everyone. And Steve won’t be there.
“Sure, I’ll be there.” You said. “Great! We’ll meet you there!” Dustin practically yelled before hanging up the phone. “Well, what did she say?” Max asked. “She’s in. Now all we gotta do is get Steve there and the plan will start working.” Dustin answered.
“I have gathered you all here this evening to talking about Y/N and Steve.” Dustin announced to his group of friends. “What about Y/N and Steve?” Mike asked. “They belong together, but they’re both too dumb to realize it.” Dustin answered. “In case you forgot, Y/N’s getting married.” Robin said.
“I know she’s getting married but Nick sucks. She belongs with Steve and you all are thinking the same thing. They were so much happier when they were together.” Dustin rebutted. “Until Steve stupidly told Nancy all about his and Y/N’s dream.” Max interjected.
“He’s completely 10000% over Nancy. He told me himself that he felt what love is supposed to feel like with Y/N. No offense, Nance.” Dustin said.
“None taken. I agree. Nick does suck, he’s boring and all he could talk about was golf. Y/N hates golf.” Nancy replied. “And, she barely calls home since they got together. It’s like he won’t let her have any connection to her life here.” Max added.
“So what do we do? We have nine days to get Y/N and Steve back together.” Will asked. “We remind them what being together felt like. All the good times they had together. Maybe if they’re actually able to be around each other and talk, they’ll see how stupid it was to break up in the first place.” Dustin explained.
“I’m in.” Robin said. “Me too.” Max added. And one by one, all members of the friend group agreed to Dustin’s plan. To try and get you and Steve back together before you were meant to walk down the aisle.
You stood in front of the movie theater, looking around for your friends. You checked your watch and the movie was meant to start in 10 minutes and you weren’t about to be late.
“Y/N?” You heard behind you. “Steve. What are you doing here?” You asked. “Dustin said they were showing ‘Risky Business’ and asked if I wanted to see it. What are you doing here?” Steve questioned. “Dustin told me they were showing ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ and asked if I also wanted to see it.” You answered.
“He set us up.” You spoke, once you connected the dots. “What do you mean?” Steve asked. “He’s trying to recreate our first date. You asked me to a showing of ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ because you knew it was my favorite movie and wanted to impress me. ‘Risky Business’ isn’t even playing today.” You explained.
“I’m gonna kill him.” Steve muttered.
The two of you stood there awkwardly, both deciding what to do. Do you stay and watch the movie or do you leave? “D-Do you maybe want to watch it with me? It would be pretty pathetic for me to see it by myself.” You suggested.
Steve thought he was hearing things for a second. There was no way you asked him to see a movie. Not after how your last conversation went.
“Really? Are you sure?” Steve asked. “We’re both here. Might as well.” You answered. Steve rapidly nodded his head before following into the movie theater.
The movie ended and you were frantically trying to wipe the tears from your face as you both exited the theater. “The ending still makes you cry?” Steve asked, a fond smile on his face. “It gets me every time.” You replied.
“You always did cry at a happy ending.” He commented. “You cried at The Goonies.” You rebutted. “Touché.” Steve replied.
“On our first date, what came after the movie?” He asked. “What, you don’t remember?” You asked. “No I remember. I just want to hear you explain it.” Steve answered.
You stifled at laugh as the two of you walked down the sidewalk. “Well, it was the night of the Snowball and you were Dustin’s ride so we went back to the school. We could hear the music from outside and you asked me to dance. So we stood in front of the headlights of your car and danced to Cyndi Lauper.” You explained.
“Everything felt so normal then. Like nothing could go wrong.” Steve said. “And then it did. I wish we could go back to that night.” You added.
Steve then stopped walking and you turned around to look at him with furrowed brows. “What?” You asked. “Come with me.” He said. “Where are we going?” You questioned. “You said you wanted to go back to that night, so let’s go.” He answered.
You looked at Steve’s hand held out for you to take. Every part of your brain was telling you not to take his hand. But since when have you ever listened to your head?
Taking Steve’s hand, he led you to his car and opened the door for you. You hadn’t seen Steve look that excited for something in a long time.
“Steve, we look so weird.” You laughed as Steve nearly dragged you out of the car. “Schools out for the Summer, no one’s going to care.” He said. “Two adults hanging around a school at night is weird.” You rebutted.
“Shh this is supposed to be nostalgic.” Steve replied. You watched him as he grabbed a tape and pushed it into the radio.
Your stomach started doing flips when you heard the familiar tune of “Crazy For You” by Madonna. The Winter before Vecna, you made Steve listen to the song on repeat for months.
It was your favorite song because it reminded you of Steve.
“You remember this song?” Steve asked, grabbing your hand and beginning to dance with you. “Of course I remember. I love Madonna.” You answered.
“This is the first time I’ve heard this song since you left.” Steve said. “I haven’t either.” You whispered. “I want to say I’m sorry. I’m so sorry for ever making you think that I wasn’t all in with you. It was shitty of me. I had this amazing, funny, beautiful woman and I made her feel second best. Probably the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.” He confessed.
“It definitely was the stupidest thing you ever did.” You agreed. Steve laughed, which caused you to laugh and it felt normal. It felt natural and it felt great.
You hadn’t felt that at ease in years.
“I really am sorry. I know it may not mean much now-“ Steve started. “No, it means everything.” You interrupted.
You both were so completely caught up in the moment, you had lost track of time. Nick was most likely home from his suit fitting.
“I should probably get home.” You said quietly. “You’re not walking home in the dark.” Steve replied. “I’ll drive you home.” He added.
“You don’t have to.” You told him. “I want to. And I won’t take no for an answer.” He said.
You eventually gave in and Steve drove the familiar route back to your house.
He pulled into the driveway and the two of you sat there in silence for a moment.
“Tonight was nice.” You finally said. “I’ll have to thank Dustin for this.” Steve said. “Don’t be a stranger, okay?” You said to him opening the door.
“You say that like we’re never going to see each other.” Steve commented. “I hope that’s not the case.” You say as you get out of the car.
You have him a wave and a warm smile as you walked to the door. Steve watched you until you got inside the house. He was about to pull out of the driveway until a car pulled up behind his.
He ducked down and saw that it was Nick exiting the passenger side.
“Yes, I’ll have your money. The second this marriage is legally binding, her money is mine. Her family is loaded. You’ll get your money. I’ll just have to dodge her brat of a sister.” He said to the driver before slamming the door.
Steve’s blood was boiling. The person you were going to marry was only after your money. Nick was just using you, he didn’t love you. Not in the way Steve loved you.
But Steve couldn’t be the one to tell you. You’d think he was saying these things because he was jealous. He needed you to find out before you walked down the aisle.
The second Steve got home, he picked up the phone and dialed the only person who could help.
“Dustin. I’m going to need your help.”

It Had to Be You (s.h)
Tumblr media
Summary: once upon a time, you and Steve were endgame. But the past caught up to your happiness and you left town. Now you’re back and engaged. But a group of teenagers won’t accept that you’ll be married to someone other than Steve. So they decide to do what they do best and meddle.
AN: I watched Eloise at Christmas Time and got inspired lol could be a potential series, I know it’s gonna be split into a couple parts but we’ll see if I deem it an official series
When you were in high school, even a bit after that, you thought Steve Harrington was the one for you. He was perfect for you; at least that’s what you used to think.
Shortly after moving to Hawkins you met Steve. And instantly it was fireworks.
But there was always that lingering feeling that Steve wasn’t completely over his first love. Of course, you never forget your first love but that was different. Nancy loomed over your relationship like a dark cloud. And she wasn’t even aware of that.
The night before you suddenly left Hawkins, you confronted Steve. Asking him if there was any part of him that still had feelings for Nancy. He didn’t say yes but he didn’t deny it either.
The second you got home, you packed up your car and made your way to Chicago. You cried to your sister Max about why you needed to leave, you left notes for everyone but Steve. You said all you needed to say to him when you broke up.
For four years you had been in Chicago and made a new life for yourself. No more monsters, no Upside Down, no Vecna.
Life was moving like it was supposed to and you were now engaged. You met your fiancé Nick through mutual work friends and you quickly hit it off.
There was something different about Nick, a very good different. But just like Nancy loomed over you and Steve, Steve loomed over you and Nick.
Now you were headed back to Hawkins for your wedding. Your entire family was there, Nick wasn’t close with his family so he was very quickly on board with the idea.
Karen Wheeler offered to host a party in your honor once you arrived, with all of your friends and family.
“Why is Mrs. Wheeler having this party anyways?” Steve asked Robin and Dustin while they drove to the house.
The two exchanged looked, having forgotten that no one told him of your engagement. “Um, I think it’s someone’s birthday or anniversary.” Robin lied. “Well which one is it? Birthday or anniversary?” Steve questioned.
“Okay, look. I know no one wanted to be the one to tell you this but the party is for Y/N. She’s engaged.” Dustin explained.
It felt like Steve was having an out of body experience and dying at the same time. You were getting married. The love of his life, was getting married. And it was all his fault.
He let you walk away that night, he didn’t stop you. “She’s engaged?” He asked. “Yeah. The wedding is going to be here in about a week.” Robin answered. Steve was quiet for a moment, trying to wrap his head around the news.
“Good for her.” He simply answered.
The three pulled up to the house and joined the festivities. It was the last Summer before all of the kids went to college, though they definitely weren’t kids anymore.
Steve had just turned 25 in April and he remembered that your birthday followed shortly after his. Which would mean he hasn’t seen you since you were 19 years old.
However, Steve’s head was anywhere but at that party. He couldn’t find it in himself to be happy and to celebrate. Yes, that was selfish of him and awful because you deserved all the happiness in the world. But he always thought you’d feel that with him.
He was knocked out of his own self-pity by the volume in the backyard getting louder.
You had just arrived at the Wheeler’s with Nick and were practically bombarded by old friends.
Nancy, Robin and El all wanted to see the rather large ring that adorned your finger. The boys were questioning Nick about his intentions with you, feigning overprotective.
But soon you felt the very heavy gaze of Steve Harrington weighing on you.
You were afraid to even look in that direction. Knowing if you did, you’d have to acknowledge him. Why would seeing Steve again have any effect on you? You’ve moved on right? You were getting married after all.
You suddenly felt suffocated under his stare and needed to find an escape.
“Um, I’m going to grab some water real quick. I’ll be right back.” You told Nick. “Are you okay?” He asked. “Yeah, yeah, I’m okay.” You lied, giving him a smile.
You went inside and leaned your hands against the kitchen counter and took a deep breath.
“Hey.” You heard from behind you. You closed your eyes and your body tensed. You turned around and really got a look at Steve. “Hi.” You replied. “You look good. Haven’t aged a day.” He joked. “Thanks.” You said. “Uh, congratulations by the way. Wish I would’ve heard it from you instead of Dustin.” Steve said.
“Well it’s not like I wanted to tell my ex boyfriend I was getting married. I didn’t even know you were going to be here.” You replied. “So now we’re just not friends anymore?” Steve questioned.
You were quiet. You wanted Steve in your life but it was going to be too hard to be around him.
“You never told me why.” He added. “Steve, you know why. You know why I couldn’t do it anymore.” You spoke. “Because you thought I still had feelings for Nancy?” Steve scoffed.
“Yes! You never gave me a reason to think otherwise. All of the signs were there. I heard you tell her about your dream. Our dream of the six kids, the Grand Canyon. I saw the way you looked at her and you never looked at me that way, Steve.” You said, voice strained towards the end.
You didn’t want to relive the pain you felt when you were sitting on the couch of that old RV, pretending to be asleep, while Steve was driving and told Nancy everything.
“Y/N,” Steve started. “Y/N! There you are! My mom wants to see the ring.” Nancy interrupted, grabbing your wrist and pulling you back outside.
Steve stood in the kitchen, kicking himself even harder than before. He should have never told Nancy about his dream. That was a dream he shared with you, not her. But he got caught up in the moment, it didn’t mean anything.
But he made you feel insecure without even meaning to. He broke your heart that night and didn’t even know he did it.
“Hey, did you talk to her?” Dustin asked, entering the kitchen. “It didn’t go well.” Steve answered. “Don’t give up, man. You and Y/N are meant to be together. She knows that, she’s just afraid to get hurt again.” Dustin said. “But she has her soon to be husband, she doesn’t need me.” Steve rebutted.
“Of course she needs you.” Dustin replied. “It’s over, man.” Steve told him, making his exit.
Dustin wasn’t going to accept that. You and Steve were at your best when you were together. Your smiles were brighter, your laughs were louder. He knew you and Steve were endgame. And he was determined to get you two back together.

I need some ideas for a series! Either OC or y/n! I’m so much better at writing a long term plot than I am a short one that has to be wrapped up quickly.
SO give me some ideas!

Summary: Kimberly doesn’t know if she is still able to fly this mission
AN: we get some ANGST like lots of angst and I’m here for it
And so sorry it’s taken me so long to get this out! I have been crazy busy and hadn’t had time to write as much as I’d like!
Kimberly wasn’t Clover that day. She wasn’t a lieutenant, she wasn’t an aviator, she wasn’t a sailor. She was a daughter, a daughter who had to bury her father.
She wasn’t wearing her uniform, it didn’t feel right. Tom Kazansky was her dad long before he was ever her admiral. That’s not what she wanted to be wearing when her and her family laid him to rest.
The entire Pacific fleet was present paying respects to their commander and to his family. As the funeral commenced, Rooster watched Kimberly from across the way.
He could tell that she was trying her best to keep it together. Anyone who knew the Kazansky’s personally knew that Kimberly and Iceman had a special bond. She was his first daughter, the only child to follow in his footsteps.
She was the carbon copy of her dad in every way. The gun shots rang out and Rooster saw the woman flinch slightly as they handed her mother a folded up flag. Jets flew overhead and soon the service was over.
When the crowd had dispersed, the eleven aviators missing their twelve, Rooster saw that Kimberly had yet to move from her spot. She stood frozen staring at the photo of her father.
He walked over to her and stood next to her, not close enough to overwhelm her but close enough to let her know that he was there.
“Did I ever tell you what happened when I told my dad was joining the Navy?” Her voice spoke. “Not the whole story, no.” Rooster answered. “I was terrified to tell him. I didn’t know how he was going to react, if he was going to be upset or happy. It wasn’t until I got my letter from the Academy that I told him. I walked into his office and placed the letter on his desk. Then he cried. But not because he was upset that I was joining the Navy but because he was happy. He said ‘this makes sense’ and just laughed. I thought he was crazy,” Kimberly paused, wiping a few stray tears from her cheeks.
And rooster just stood there and listened to her say all the things she needed to say.
“He told me it made sense because flying was in my blood. And he said ‘if any Kazansky is going to give them hell, of course it would be you, Kimmy.” She finished.
The nostalgic smile fell from her face and was replaced with a frown. “I’ve never known life without him.” She cried. Rooster grabbed her by the shoulders and pulled her into him tightly.
“Hey, you’re going to be okay. Maybe not at first and not right away, but over time it won’t hurt as much.” He told her.Kimberly stayed in his arms for a little while longer before she decided she needed to go home.
She loved Bradley, more than she should and though she wanted to stay with him forever, she needed nothing more than to just go home.
__
Sarah Kazansky wandered around the quiet house in search of her eldest daughter. She hadn’t seen Kimberly since the funeral service and out of everyone in that family, she was taking it the hardest.
Sarah remembered just how often Kimberly would say “I’m going to fly planes like daddy” and how Tom’s eyes lit up with pride every time.
The woman walked down the hallway and saw a light peering through a crack in the door of Tom’s office.
It was open wide enough for Sarah to look inside and find her daughter sitting in the chair, seemingly deep in thought with tear stains on her face.
“Well this gives me deja vu.” She spoke, stepping into the room. “Hi mom. I’m sorry for disappearing.” Kimberly said. “You don’t need to apologize for anything. You’re grieving.” She said.
“We’re all grieving and yet I’m the one who can’t keep it together.” Kimberly replied. “Kimmy, you never had time to come to terms with your dad’s illness. You were deployed and he didn’t want to tell you until you got home. We were all able to accept it, you weren’t.” Sarah said.
The room fell silent for a moment as Kimberly looked at the framed family photo on the desk. “I don’t think I can go back to Top Gun.” She whispered. “What?” Sarah questioned. “It feels wrong. Going back to train for this mission that we might not come back from. Dad was the one to tell me to go and now that he’s gone, it doesn’t feel right.” She explained.
“Kimberly Kazansky. You were meant to be at Top Gun, you were meant to fly this mission. You have no idea how proud your dad was when Admiral Simpson requested you by name. You were doing something he never got to do and he was so proud of you. He was proud of you every day of your life. Your dad will never be gone, not really. Every second that you’re up in that jet, he’s with you. When you finish this mission and come home, he’ll be with you. When you inevitably marry Bradley Bradshaw he will be with you.” Sarah said.
“Mom,” Kimberly started, the comment about her and Rooster not going unnoticed. “I saw the two of you after the funeral. That boy loves you so much and I know you love him.” The woman replied. “How do you know?” Kimberly asked. “It’s in the eyes. The way he looks at you.” Sarah answered. “LIke the way dad always looked at you?” Kimberly questioned.
Sarah gave her daughter a warm smile, placing her hand on top of hers. “Your dad will always be with us. He will be with you in everything that reminds you of him. And I will see him through you every day. I always have. The two of you were scarily alike.” She said.
Kimberly laughed lightly, sniffling and wiping the tears from her face. “I love you, mom.” She said. “I love you too, Kimmy.” Sarah said hugging her daughter tightly.
Kimberly walked back into Top Gun, ready to continue training for the mission. Life didn’t stop just because she lost her dad. And she was going to do her best to fly it for him.
When she did arrive, Admiral Simpson wanted to speak with both her and Maverick after training.
“I can only imagine what you both must be feeling right now. Take some time, whatever you need.” The admiral said. “I appreciate that sir, but there is no time. The mission-“ Maverick started.
“I’ll be taking over training from here.” Admiral Simpson said. “Sir?” Maverick questioned. “We both know you didn’t want this job, captain.” Simpson answered. “Sir, they’re not ready.” Mav rebutted.
“It was your job to get them ready.” Simpson said. “Sir, they have to believe that this mission can be flown.” Maverick said, as Kimberly was feeling like she needed to hear this conversation.
“And all you’ve managed to do is teach them that it can’t.” Simpson replied. “Sir,” Mav started. “You’re grounded, captain. Permanently. Both of you are.” Simpson said, looking at Kimberly.
“Wait, what?” Kimberly questioned. “Your father just died, lieutenant. Whether you know it or not, until you get the proper evaluation you’re not ready to go up in a jet.” Simpson explained. “With all due respect, Admiral, I’ve been flying knowing my dad was going to die for months. I have never been a flight risk.” Kimberly retorted.
“I’ve made my decision. That is all.” Simpson said.
Kimberly clenched her jaw before storming out of the office. She had never been grounded. Never once in her career had she been grounded. Kimberly assumed it was because the damage she did to the jet trying to fly coffin corner.
Admiral Simpson cared more about the money than he did about her. He was afraid she’d do more damage.
“Hey, hey, where are you going?” Rooster questioned. He saw her leave Simpson’s office and walking towards the exit. “I’ve been grounded. Simpson won’t let me fly the mission. He doesn’t think I’m in the right head space.” Kimberly answered.
“What? No, he can’t do that.” Rooster said. “This is ridiculous, I don’t get grounded. I’m too good to be grounded.” Kimberly rambled. “Okay, okay, calm down. Just breathe.” Rooster told her.
“No. No, no, I’m getting back on this mission. One way or another.” Kimberly replied. “Kim, you can’t do that right now. Why don’t we just go get something to at. Clear your head.” Bradley offered.
Kimberly’s heart swelled at the look on his face, the tone of his voice, just the mere suggestion alone. But she needed to be alone and think about what to do next.
“Thank you, Bradley for caring and I-I appreciate you but I need to be alone right now. Figure out what the hell I’m going to do now.” She said. Bradley understood that. Kimberly just lost the biggest mission of her career and her father in the span of a few days. He just needed her to know that he was there for her.
Kimberly gave his hand a squeeze before retreating from the man.
As she was walking out the exit and towards her car, Maverick stopped her.
“Kimberly, I need your help.” He said. “With what?” She asked. “We’re going to show Cyclone that this mission can be flown.” He answered.
Kimberly didn’t have an opportunity to reply before she was being pulled towards the hangar.

Lucky Charm 3 (b.b)
Tumblr media
Summary: not every burned bridge is beyond repair
AN: Part 3!!! There is so much dialogue in these few scenes so I skipped some lines and added some in for creative purposes! Next chapter is gonna be ANGSTY
Part 1
Part 2
Kimberly was feeling light, much lighter after all she said to Bradley. It was something that needed to be said. Though it was hard and neither of them wanted to completely burn down the bridge that was their friendship, it was something that she needed to get off her chest.
However, she was beginning to think it may have made things worse. What if she did permanently burn that bridge? No matter how angry she was with him, Kimberly still loved him. And maybe as more than a friend.
She’d never admit it out loud, scared that once she did it would make it real. Loving your best friend was the most cliche trope ever. There were a million rom-coms, books and songs about it.
Kimberly just needed to remind herself why she was here and maybe that wasn’t the fix what was broken between her and Bradley.
__
“Time is your worst enemy.” Maverick spoke, standing in front of the rest of the pilots. “Stage 1 of the mission is to advance at low altitude in two teams.” He continued as they all watched the screen behind him.
“You will reach your destination through this narrow cannon. The area smells of radar-mounted heat-seeking missiles. These missiles are deadly.” Maverick said.
Kimberly and Phoenix exchanged worried glances. Flying at such a low altitude is very, very risky, almost impossible. But obviously that was why Maverick was the one teaching them.
“They are designed to protect the sky above, not the canyon below.” Maverick explained. “Because they know that no one is crazy enough to fly under them.” Bradley interjected.
“That’s exactly what I’m going to train you for. On mission day, your altitude will be 1,000 feet. Maximum.” Maverick said.
All the pilot’s faces dropped upon hearing their altitude and the parameters of the mission.
“If you pass this altitude, the radar will catch you and you die. Your speed will be 600 knots minimum. Arrival time at destination, 2 and a half minutes. This is because of the 5th generation warplanes waiting at the nearby airport.” Maverick continued.
Kimberly began to wonder if she was really cut out for this mission. These were new limits she had never tested before. Could she really pull this off? Or would she be another military training statistic?
Training that day wasn’t easy. Going up that canyon at a speed none of them had ever flown before, was gearing to be too much for the pilots. No one had flown it successfully so far, except Rooster.
“Why did you die? You are the team leader up there. Why did you and your team die?” Maverick asked him. “Sir, he was the only one to reach the target.” Phoenix interjected.
“One minute late. He gave the enemy planes time to get him.” Maverick rebutted. “He’s dead.” He added. “You can’t know that.” Rooster said. “You’re not flying fast enough.” Hangman commented. “We don’t have a second to waste.” Maverick said.
“We reached the goal.” Rooster said. “And superior enemy planes cut you off while you were leaving.” Maverick rebutted. “Then it’s a dogfight.” Rooster said.
Kimberly watched them hash out their differences in front of everyone. “Against 5th generation warplanes.” Maverick said. “Yes, we still have a chance.” Rooster answered. “Rooster,” Kimberly started only loud enough for him to hear.
“In an F-18?” Maverick questioned. “It’s not the plane sir, it’s the pilot.” Rooster said, ignoring Kimberly. “Exactly! There is more than one way to fly this mission. In this mission, a man either flies like Maverick or he doesn’t come back.” Hangman spoke.
“Now is not the time to think about the past.” He added. “What is that supposed to mean?” Rooster questioned. “Rooster,” Maverick warned. “I can’t be the only one who knows that Maverick flew with his old man,” Hangman started.
“That’s enough.” Maverick said. Soon Rooster shot up out of his chair and lunged for Hangman. Kimberly and Maverick stood in between the two aviators, Kimberly pushing Rooster back.
“You’re all dismissed.” Maverick announced. The pilots scarcely dispersed, each going in different directions. Kimberly watched as Rooster stormed out of the classroom.
Without anyone noticing, Kimberly slipped out and followed after Rooster.
“Is there a reason you’re following me, Kazansky?” Rooster asked. “Uh, I just wanted to make sure you were okay. After what happened in there.” Kimberly answered.
Every ounce of confidence she had before disappeared the second he spoke to her first. “I’m fine.” He answered. “I know things aren’t good between us right now but I’ve known you since we were six years old, I know when you’re lying.” She said.
“He had no right to bring that up. What point was he trying to make?” Rooster stammered. “Hangman is a piece of work. But he’s wrong, you know. You are good enough to fly this mission. Probably the best person to do it. And I don’t give out compliments to my competition easily.” Kimberly replied.
Rooster stifled a laugh at her response. “I really am sorry, Kim. I know it doesn’t mean much and you’re right, I don’t understand what you felt after what I did. But I’m so sorry and even if you can never forgive me, I just need you to know that I’m sorry.” He said.
“I know you’re sorry. And I know I shouldn’t forgive you so easily but in order to get through this mission we need to be at our best. And I don’t know about you but I’m at my best when I don’t have any more drama stressing me out.” Kimberly replied.
“So, I forgive you.” She added. “Really?” Rooster questioned. “Yes. My dad told me to be the better person, take the high road and that’s what I’m doing.” She answered.
Rooster gave her a smile, feeling like he was finally making progress with Kimberly. It was a step in the right direction.
__
The next day, Maverick told everyone to meet at the Hard Deck and that training was going to be a little different that day.
Kimberly, Phoenix and Halo arrived together, the group of women finding the rest of their peers and Maverick with two foam footballs.
“What’s going on, Mav?” Kimberly asked. “Well, Clover, you all need to work as a team if you’re going to survive this mission. You need to trust each other so, we will be playing dogfight football. Offense and defense at the same time.” Maverick explained.
Kimberly was competitive, always has been always will be. Rooster knew that better than anyone. She was a volleyball star at their high school, the most ruthless on the court. There was no doubt that this wasn’t going to be any different.
Teams were made, Rooster and Kimberly being on opposing teams. “Think you can beat your lover boy, Clover?” Hangman teased. “Think you can keep up, Bagman?” Kimberly rebutted.
Hondo blew the whistle and the game began. It was something to get used to, offense and defense playing at the same time but everyone soon got the hang of it.
Kimberly and Rooster were facing off in the next play, Hangman being the quarterback for her team. The ball was snapped and Kimberly took off running to catch the ball but it was intercepted by Rooster.
The blonde pilot jumped on the back of her friend causing them both to fall to the ground, the ball coming loose.
“That’s not fair, that has to be cheating.” Rooster laughed. “Defense, Bradshaw. You should try it sometime.” Kimberly replied, offering a hand to help him up. “Guess you never lost that competitive edge.” He said. “Duh. Why do you think I’m so good at my job?” She said with a smirk.
“Kazansky! Bradshaw! The game is this way!” Coyote called. The two gave each one last fleeting smile before he jogged off ahead of her. “Seems the two of you made up.” Maverick spoke to her. “We’re getting there. Slowly but surely.” She answered.
“Good. You two are too good for each other to let my mistake ruin your friendship.” He said. “And I think you're getting too old to be playing football for an hour.” Kimberly joked. “And you’re too much like your dad.” Maverick replied.
The game went on for a couple more hours, the team feeling a new sense of comradery that they hadn’t felt before. It was refreshing to have a group of the cockiest pilots in the Navy feel like a team.
It was also a nice break from real training. The day after the football game, they were brought back to reality.
“Your target is the uranium enrichment plant and it will start working sooner than expected. Raw uranium will be delivered to the plant in 10 days. As a result, your mission has been pushed forward a week to avoid contamination of the target valley with radiation.” Maverick informed everyone.
“Sir, no one here has successfully completed the low altitude course.” Kimberly commented. “Yet you have been ordered to advance.” He said.
Kimberly clenched her jaw as Maverick went into explaining what needed to be done and how they needed to fly to successfully complete the mission and come home alive.
Phoenix, Bob and Coyote were the next pair to fly the course. Kimberly, Yale and Omaha had unsuccessfully flown it before them. She was nursing a killer headache after pushing 9 G’s to make it through Coffin Corner.
Everyone was listening on comms, hearing that Coyote wasn’t responding. Everything was going wrong, Maverick had to get a lock on him so the tones would alert the pilot currently falling towards the ground.
Kimberly thought she could breathe after Coyote regained consciousness but a bird strike on Phoenix and Bob sent her into a mental spiral.
She had never lost a friend to something like this and Phoenix was her closest friend aside from Rooster. “Come on, Phoenix, eject.” She muttered, hearing the commotion.
Rooster could see that Kimberly was worried, more worried than anyone else in that room. He placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, something he used to do to bring her some sort of peace.
The comms stopped, no one saying anything else and the time that went by felt like hours. When they were told that Phoenix and Bob were okay and in the medical wing, Kimberly took off towards that part of the wing.
“Lieutenant, she needs rest right now.” The doctor told Kimberly. “Please can I just see her for five minutes? I need to know she’s okay.” She pleaded.
The doctor paused for a moment, deciding if he wanted to go against orders. “Five minutes, then she needs to rest.” He said. Kimberly gave him a smile before entering the room.
“Hey, how are you feeling?” She asked gently as she entered. “Hey, I’m good. Just a little shaken up. Is Bob okay?” Phoenix asked. “Yeah, yeah, Bob’s okay. You’re both okay.” Kimberly answered. “I was freaking out. Thought you weren’t going to eject in time.” She added.
“You can’t get rid of me that easily, Kazansky. You always got me.” Phoenix said. “Speaking of, what is going on with you and Rooster? You were all chummy at the football game.” Phoenix added.
“We talked, he apologized again. We’re on the road to recovery. Things aren’t going to go back to normal overnight but we’re both trying.” Kimberly explained. “He’s totally in love with you.” Phoenix said. “What? He is not!” The blonde woman said. “He so is! The way he looks at you when you’re not looking, the picture in his flight suit-“ Phoenix started before Kimberly cut her off.
“Photo in his flight suit? What photo?” She asked. “He keeps a photo of you in his flight suit. I first saw it when we were stationed overseas together and then I saw it the other day after you ripped him a new one on the tarmac.” Phoenix explained.
“If that’s not true love, I don’t know what is.” She added. “He doesn’t love me.” Kimberly said. “Kim, trust me, he does. And I know you love him too.” Phoenix said.
Before Kimberly could reply, the doctor came back in and told her she needed to go.
She was walking down the hall towards the rec room where Rooster was waiting and to let him know that Phoenix and Bob were okay.
“Lieutenant Kazansky,” Admiral Bates stopped her. “Admiral, is there something wrong?” Kimberly asked.
Kimberly didn’t need him to say anything, she could tell by the look on his face that something was definitely wrong.
“Kimberly, your father has passed away.” Admiral Bates said. Kimberly was silent for a moment, it taking longer for her to process the news she just heard.
Soon she began to feel numb. Lost feeling in every part of her body. Her legs grew weak and before she fell to the ground, Admiral Bates caught her. It wasn’t until then that she allowed herself to cry.
The man set her on the ground given that she couldn’t stand and allowed her to cry on his shoulder for a few moments. “Do you want me to get Maverick?” He asked.
Kimberly nodded her head, putting her face in her hands as the man stood up.
Maverick and Bradley were in the middle of a heated argument when Admiral Bates entered the room, breaking the news to Maverick.
“Kimberly, where’s Kimberly?” Rooster asked. The three men exited the room and saw the woman sitting on the floor, back against the wall, sobbing into her hands.
Maverick couldn’t even move before Rooster was already at Kimberly’s side. “I got you, I got you.” He whispered to her as she held on to him like a life vest.
Though she thought she needed Maverick in that moment, Rooster was the person she really needed and the only person who was probably able to get her through this.
