Sarah J Maas KoA Tour Highlights

Here are some compiled highlights from SJM’s KoA tour in Chicago, October 25, 2018.

Sarah was vacationing in Costa Rica, about five years ago, when the last line of the entire ToG series popped into her head. It made it through the cuts and it is now the last line of KoA.

Lysandra was not supposed to be a main character, BUT she was driving with her husband when she saw in her head Lysandra shifting and turning into a giant ghost leopard and ripping some man’s head off. Then she had to include her more.

Sarah is super heavily inspired by music. Each character has a theme song.

Aedion is such a fanboy over Rowan. He was his idol. When they first met, Rowan gave him a knife which Aedion ADORES to this day.

The series, when Sarah was only sixteen and writing it, was previously called Queen of Glass.

Abraxos was inspired by Sarah’s cousin’s dog. His name was Buddy and he was found dumped at the side of the road, half dead, and used for dog fighting. He was a “bait” dog. Even though he had had a horrible experience in life, he was still the sweetest most trusting dog ever. He couldn’t be broken… and neither can Abraxos.

Sarah wrote fanfics for her own early drafts where Aelin and Rowan were not together. The fics mainly consisted of “badly written” Rowaelin smut.

Chaol is an ugly crier.

The glue the publishing company purchased could only bind 1,000 pages. Sarah’s final final draft of KoA was 1,020 pages. The editors worked to squeeze it in so KoA could be bound without falling apart.

There are a lot of things we do not know about that Sarah knows about in the world. For example: Ansel’s backstory and what lies in the Staghorn Mountains. Some of those secrets will be revealed in The World of Throne of Glass.

The World of Throne of Glass will be coming out next year (sometime) and will chronicle the wars, and give glimpses into TEN years after the events of KoA. We will see some OG characters.

If the characters were in the Great British Baking show, Aelin would lose because she would accidentally burn her cake, get upset, throw it out, and get kicked off the show. Rowan and Chaol wouldn’t be into it because they don’t like sweets, Aedion would try his hardest and only keep passing rounds because he’s charming and hot, Nesryn would do awesome because her dad is a baker, and Dorian has fine tastes and would be Nesryn’s top rival. In the end, Nesryn would win.

Taran is adorable.

She teased she doesn’t know if the series (or any spinoff in the world) is over yet. She said: “Maybe I’ll write another seven books” and the audience cheered immensely, and also commented “the door is not shut”.

CRESCENT CITY, her new book she has been working on in her free time, will have ACOTAR level of smut and gore, is set 2000 years or so in the future of its own world. Science+Magic. She sold the book with a one page synopsis and a Pinterest board.

ACOFAS is like the “christmas special” in her mind.

She has written 200 pages of the Nessian book already. It will be a full length installment.

Each book coming after the Nessian one will have their own pair, and at least one will be set 1,000s of years before Feyre and Rhys. They will come out after Crescent City.

If Rowan and Aelin “survive and are able to have children”, their godparents would be Lysandra and Aedion.

If Rowan and Aelin had a daughter who went out on a date, she would look up and see a white tailed hawk stalking her. At the restaurant they would eat at, they’d see Lysandra and Aelin looking up above a menu watching. When her date meets Aelin she’d be a ball of flame and super intimidating: “If you hurt my child I will burn you”.

If Lorcan had a daughter, he would secretly love doing her hair and dressing her up.

Aelin and Nesta both read smut.

Feyre and Rowan are the most like each other, so are Aelin and Rhys.

If Aelin and Rhys ever fought, Aelin would fight dirty and Rhys would not. It was a hard choice, but Rhys would win at the end of the day.

Aelin is the most like Elsa. Rowan: Shang because he is cute when he is angry, he’d be Zazu when he shifted. Feyre: Mulan because she sacrificed so much for her father. Rhys: Flynn because he would be upset that someone got his nose wrong on a wanted poster.

And that’s it guys! That was a lot of typing.

Deborah x Isidore = Pure Comedy

I started reading “The Perks of Being a Villainess“ / “Being A Wicked Woman Is Comfortable And Pleasant” recently, and the male lead (Isidore Visconti) is absolutely hilarious. That guy literally fell for the MC - Deborah at first sight and didn’t even notice! And the hilarious part is that Deborah knows him as both him and his second identity, and the scenes in which she talks to the other identity about the first one are the most hilarious. He is literally pouting every time she calls his real identity suspicious xD THAT MAN WAS LOST THE MOMENT HE TALKED TO HER FOR THE FIRST TIME AND HE IS NOT GOING BACK. This romance is hilarious as fuck. Also, the huge plus of this manhwa is that the main character is a science major so SHE IS GOOD AT MATH, and she uses that math knowledge to literally solve magical equations. I feel strong feminist vibe coming from here. A woman who knows how to count and is damn good at it is something I needed in those “I was Reborn as a Villainess” manhwas.

I think one of the most under rated things about kaz brekker is that...he's funny

like so many dark edgy ya boys are brooding loners who aren't good with people but kaz is such a subversion of these traits

in the first scene we see him through inej's point of view he's cracking jokes with the dregs, he makes smalltalk about weather with the black tips, like Inej makes a point to note when he changes from being Kaz to being Dirty hands, who is all those edgy tropes but kaz isn't always Dirtyhands

"why don't you pay someone to burn your Kruge for you thats what the big players do"

literally anything he says to Matthias when he's trying to goad him

like kaz is not some humorless sad boi, even his eternal monolog can be funny

like please appreciate that for all he can be cruel, go too far, or cross lines like...Kaz Brekker is fucking funny

Heyyyyyy I’d really like to talk more about the ball, who’s with me.

Because for all its glitter, the ball is dark. No, seriously, it’s dark. It’s eerie, it’s disturbing, and the narrative doesn’t shy away from showing us just how much. 

As in a classic fairytale, mortals are being spirited away into another realm to dance through the night. Here, however, we see exactly who is orchestrating the dance, and why.

And we empathize with him, but watching Aziraphale has never been so painful or so unsettling.

Nina arrives distraught and is immediately hit with the realization that she doesn’t feel distraught, even though she knows she should be feeling it. She confronts Aziraphale and he just tells her: oh yes! :) no long faces tonight! And she is disturbed throughout the ball, thinks she is losing her mind, questions and fights the enchantment… but from time to time, the enchantment still takes hold.

And just—

Aziraphale. Aziraphale, you do know that manipulating people is wrong, don’t you? You… do know that? And yes, of course, neither Crowley’s nor Aziraphale’s approach to morality is human. They are eldritch, they are otherworldly. It was Crowley who changed the paintball guns into real guns in S1, though of course, the humans still had choice in using them.

But the ball is still different.

We’ve never seen Aziraphale do anything quite so disturbing before, or go so obviously deep into his own delusion. There are moments during these scenes when even Crowley, permanently frustrated, is very nearly disturbed. (“Angel! What are you doing?” or “Making it rain is one thing, but a BALL?”)

I fully think that by that point in the story, Aziraphale is not all right. He is in an anxiety spiral, denying reality fiercely, obstinately, disastrously, not listening to any of Crowley’s hissed warnings. Yes, yes, he is giddy, he is in love. It’s so very important for him that everything go RIGHT this night, the night he gets to dance with Crowley. Is he even aware of everything he is conjuring up, of the enchantment he has woven? The humans who step through the doors of the bookshop change: their clothing, their mood, their speech patterns… By this point, is Aziraphale doing this consciously at all? Or is reality conforming to his expectations, forcing everyone into a replica of the nineteenth century while Aziraphale himself, distracted and smitten, works himself up to inviting Crowley to dance?

In the first few episodes, as fear and danger grow, as Aziraphale is faced with the danger specifically to Crowley (I don’t see why he would risk his existence for you, Shax tells him in the car), Aziraphale only denies reality all the more fiercely, only holds on to his plans tighter, only puts more force into them and exerts more control (really, rather like the archangels with their Great Plan).

And the ball, beautiful and otherworldly and eerie as it is, is also a dire warning. 

In the morning, it will be Crowley, not Aziraphale, who will get told off for manipulating Nina and Maggie. Aziraphale won’t reflect on this. He won’t be forced to reflect, and Metatron will manipulate him in turn.

There is a plan to follow. The show must go on.

GOD the ball is so dark.

Sometime after the events of season 2... Crowley storms into Heaven, carrying a folder of papers, looking very cross.

Aziraphale: [looking up from his desk] Oh! Crowley! you-

Crowley: [cheekily, in that David Tennant way] No no. I'm just here to serve you your papers.

Crowley: [drops a folder of human legal documents on Aziraphale's desk]

Aziraphale: ...You came all the way, up here, to bring me some papers...

Crowley: Yes, and I also have a few choice words about them-

Aziraphale: [having a sudden suspicion about what kind of papers these might be]

Aziraphale: [angrily, and then... gently] Crowley... you know we can't actually get... ~divorced~ ... if we were never... ~married~ ... right?

Crowley: ...?

Crowley: No not that kind of- They're TAX papers angel.

Crowley: [flicks open the folder on the desk]

Aziraphale: Oh, I... I see... Is that all you-

Crowley: [crossly] Angel I am NOT doing your taxes for you even you did, apparently, technically, list me as a bookshop co-owner. Which, by the way, you never actually told me we were legally business partners. Something legally binding like that really seems like something you should tell a person... So how exactly was I supposed to know-

Aziraphale: [Trying very hard and failing not to look flustered] Yes, well... I do have a perfectly good explanation for that... You see... I thought... Maybe we could... [Totally unprepared to have this conversation right now] Oh can't we do this later? I really have quite a lot of, um, very important records... Records! To be signing off on-

Crowley: [Dripping with sarcasm] Oh, later? Is the ~Supreme Archangel~ just going to pop on down to grace us with his divine presence whenever it's convenient-

Aziraphale: [Pursing his lips] Crowley there really is no need for-

...The two of them continue to bicker like the married/divorced couple they are...

Some 17th order scrivener, probably: [clutching a handful of records behind a nearby pillar] Oh my God they were business partners.
