Reflective journal week 10.

Evaluate your performance this week. What have you done well? What are you proud of? What really sticks out as something interesting you learned this week? What do you need to improve on?

I made a new survey about my new documentary. I did this so that I would have primary research in my research portfolio and so I can get a sense of what my audience thinks. I posted the link to the survey in the microsoft teams group chat,on the facebook page and on my tumblr. 

I’m proud of my planning. I came into town early on Monday so that I would have enough time to go to Superdrup to get the box of tampons and pack of sanitary pads that will be in the documentary and then go to my maths class at Adams. 

I also came in early today today to edit my footage of different shot and angle types. 

On Thursday I had Marta to help me film the bulk of my interviews and on Friday Hek helped me. I’m proud of how well the footage has turned out. And I’m proud of myself for staying at college to transfer the files and write down timecodes of clips that i want in the edit. 

What problems have you encountered with the project this week? How did you solve them/how will you solve them in the future?

The only problem this week has been with the laptops that I’m editing on - to edit i need the USB headphones and to solve this in the future I will get to Paul's office early to book the laptop and headphones together. 

What are your aims for next week? Be specific!

Next week I aim to come in early on Tuesday and start editing, to come in on Wednesday before 12 (I can’t come in earlier as I’m going grocery shopping) and to finish my edit on Thursday and hand it before Friday.

Timecodes.

On Thursday after filming after I imported everything I re-watched all the interviews and wrote on a google doc timecodes for clips that could be used. Doing this has really helped me to edit.

Wednesdays edit.

In Wednesday’s lesson I focused on arranging the footage and I added some transition effects on the graphics.

Editing.

On Tuesday I came into college early at 9am so I could start editing and by lunchtime I made a lot of progress.

I started the main edit today using the timecodes I made last week by the end of Tuesday lesson I had a solid footage layout and I’m going to finish it on Wednesday.

After filming on Thursday.

After filming on Thursday I booked a laptop out from Paul and started to get the footage from the SD cards onto my One Drive. I made folders of each of the boys names and moved the footage in and started listening to the audio to match it to a folder. 

John helped me with this as well as moving everything over started to look confusing. 

When this was finished John showed me how to sync the footage with the audio so that when i edit i can choose what camera angle i want. Once this was done I opened a word doc and watched the interviews back and made notes of time codes for clips that i want to include.

Editing problem

To listen to the audio I need the usb headphones but Paul doesn’t have any left.  Without listening to the audio I can’t organize it into the persons folder and import it into Adobe Premiere.

John showed me by selecting the files and right clicking you select create multi-camera source sequence it will have the two camera angles and the audio all together.

How everything’s saved.

Inside every folder there is the 2 camera clips and the audio file. When I have the USB headphones I will listen to the audio files and put them in their folder.

I have everything saved on OneDrive and I also have a copy on my memory stick.

Updated proposal.

My FMP documentary will be around 8 to 10 minutes long and will be about what teenage boys know about periods/products. I will be asking them a series of questions related to periods in general, tampons and sanitary towels. I’m doing this to see how much the boys know. 

The products that will be shown are a box of Tampax tampons and a pack of Always sanitary pads.

By making my Let’s talk about periods survey I learnt a lot about my primary audience. My primary audience is female (55.56%), male (27.78%), Prefer not to say (11.11%) and other (5.56%).  My audience is aged around under 18 at 44.44%, 18-24 at 38.89%, 35-44 at 5.56%, 45-54 at 5.56% and 65+ being 5.56%. 

One of the questions that I will be asking the volunteers is how much do you think a regular box of tampons cost? and I included this in the survey and the most popular answer being £3.00 + at 38.89% followed by £2.00 + at 33.33%, £1.00 + and £4.00 + are tied at 11.11% and finally under £1.00 at 5.56%

Another question I will be asking is what’s the average age girls’ start their periods? 50% thought age 11, 27.78% thought 12 and 22.22% thought 13. I will also be asking how long do you think the average period last? (days) 83.33% think 3-5 and 16.67% think 6-7 days. 

I will be filming on the 20th and 21st May in the studio.

I like that right at the start there was a preview of the guys talking about the tampons and then it cuts to the title and I also like the variety in the product range they have. 

I also like the close up shots of the products before the guys talk about them.

I find it interesting that you never hear anyone asking the guys questions I think that in editing the interviewer was cut.

I think that I will have the close ups of the products as well.

Meet the young activists uniting to help girls who can't afford period products, and to remove the stigma of menstruation. 

 From Amika George, the school girl from London who took on the Government from her bedroom, to the Celtic fans lobbying football clubs to provide free period products and the Manchester collective distributing hundreds of care packs every month. 

They are all part of a creative, grassroots movement making a real impact and in the process, challenging the stigma of menstruation.

I like how to break up the video into different segments they included different artworks.

I also like how sometimes you’ll see all three of them but then it will cut to one persons face as their talking. 

And I like that in editing they’ve added statistics.
