i read this anecdote about mongooses a long time ago & it's never left my brain
The owner of a small zoo lost two prize animals in a fire. To order another pair, he wrote a letter to a zoological supply company: "Dear Sirs: Please send me two mongooses." That didn't sound quite right, so he began again: "Dear Sirs: Please send me two mongeese." Still not sure of his plurals, he made this third attempt: "Dear Sirs: Please send me a mongoose, and, while you're at it, please send me another mongoose."
~Richard Lederer, Writer's Digest, June 1991
every so often i start referencing it & then realize most people will have no idea what i'm talking about

Tom Bombadil bringing some sunflowers to his dear Goldberry. With her association with water, I'm not sure if she's able to go out and see prairie flowers, but that's okay, Tom brings them to her. 🌻

A meme from that Avenger's scene.
I'm new in this fandom, not actually part of it just yet, and it's been ages since I last used Tumblr so I'm intimidated af. Please don't eat me.

Your Huan is my absolute favourite Huan in the whole world! He's just so perfectly friendshaped and looks so fluffy! This is not to say, that your other dogs and art aren't also amazing, but Huan has a special place in my heart!
Aaaaaahh Thank you so much! He's my favorite character and that really means a lot. 💛 My Huan is a sort of Irish Wolfhound x Borzoi mix. They're both massive, (sometimes) grey wolf hunters, and while an Irish Wolfhound may have been more what Tolkien had in mind, Borzoi have a very elegant and Elven ✨aesthetic✨.
Here's a sketch of puppy! Huan heckling his mom. She doesn't seem to mind though. They're probably in a part of Oromë's woods where Vána hangs out a lot so there’s a bunch of wildflowers.

I do think that love is very often about sacrifice. I mean sacrifice as in choosing, as in effort. I mean choosing as in the allocation of time, and energy, and the making of space and the setting aside of prejudices and the keeping of an open mind. I mean leaving the last half-slice of cake in the fridge; working late into Thursday evening to spend Friday evening together; picking them up at the train station even though they’ve long memorised the route to your flat. Even when it is a sacrifice happily made, a choice readily chosen, it is still the giving up of one life in favour of another. And I think it’s important to recognise that. I could be living a different life but I am choosing to live a life with you. It is a sacrifice. The stakes are that high. And I do it anyway. I do it because it’s you. I do it because I love you.

Our golden boi did not deserve to have his big scene stolen in the movie:
“With his last failing senses Frodo heard cries, and it seemed to him that he saw, beyond the Riders that hesitated on the shore, a shining figure of white light; and behind it ran small shadowy forms waving flames, that flared red in the grey mist that was falling over the world.”
Frodo: ’I thought that I saw a white figure that shone and did not grow dim like the others. Was that Glorfindel then?’
Gandalf: ‘Yes, you saw him for a moment as he is upon the other side: one of the mighty of the Firstborn. He is an Elf-lord of a house of princes…’

Imagine being a baguette from the morning batch, who spends the entire day languishing in your native bakery, watching the others be purchased by customers, slowly coming to realise that you are nobody’s first pick. Your baguette sisters bid you adieu with a look of pity as one by one they get wrapped in a stylish paper scarf and tucked under someone’s arm, whisked away to their forever home. At the end of the day you are unceremoniously thrown into a bag with other unwanted breads, and you stare at each other in silent dismay, feeling the shift in your sense of self. No longer fresh baguettes, your country’s pride and joy, but stale rubbish, to be thrown away. You will never rest on a breakfast table under a blanket of jam, surrounded by a loving family, never know the touch of a piece of cheese. Dimly you hear the baker ask someone “Do you want these for Pirlouit?” Your nonexistent ears prick up. You wait. Grow old. Your crumb and hopes dry up, become brittle. One day at last you are freed from your dark abode to meet the one you were destined for, and he greets you like the Messiah, and you finally understand. You were never rubbish. You were the chosen ones

“As a novelist I was told you’ve got to go out and get experience. And there’s some truth to that. Most of us don’t have a lot of fiction to write until we’re heading on to 30. You have to do some living. But it isn’t wandering around and driving cattle and working on boats and all those manly jobs that authors always used to put on the back of their book covers. I think the “get experience” rule made a lot of us women feel really crummy, because what have we got? Maybe college, and a couple of kids, some stupid job, and a lot of women didn’t even have jobs at that point. None of that counted as “experience” because it wasn’t’ experience. This is why I mention both Emily Bronte and Emily Dickinson in the note to that poem. It’s what you do with what you got. It’s the eye that’s seeing. It doesn’t much matter what it sees, if the eye is a seeing eye. And if it isn’t a seeing eye, then of course, you can wander all over the world like some of those poor souls on tours, with eyes that have never learned to see at all.”
— Ursula Le Guin, the feminine and the Tao : an interview with Ursula Le Guin
