How long will it last, baby if we dance?
(Hindi Zahra - Beautiful Tango)
Shouta Aizawa had no idea why he let Yamada drag him along. Maybe it was because they had been friends for so long, maybe he just really didn't feel like putting up with his nagging, but here he was. In the middle of a bunch of students on a Saturday evening, getting drunk. He was thinking about how he could be at home right now, sitting on his couch with a book in his hand and his cat curled up beside him.
Instead he was surrounded by people who were mostly between 18 and 25 years old, wearing that stupid suit that was way too warm for a place like this and he had already had one or two drinks too many. In his head he kept cursing Yamada for dragging him along to this, but if he was honest, he just wanted to help out his friend who was supposed to be chaperoning this whole thing.
Which was a joke in itself, because Yamada was not good at keeping an eye on students. It just wasn't a thing he did. Getting blackout drunk? That sounded more like Yamada. Aizawa pinched the bridge of his nose. He had already seen one or two people from his first year course here and a couple of his other students. He'd prefer it if he just wouldn't see anyone he knew.
He quickly finished off the rest of his whiskey, as he heard the familiar voice of one of his students. He tried recognizing her by her voice, but it wouldn't work. And the problem was that she had spotted him.
"Mr. Aizawa! I didn't think we'd see you here!" she called out to him. His eyes started twitching, as he turned around and saw the girl with short, pastel pink hair in front of him. She was in a simple, black dress.
"And why is that, Miss Ashido?" he replied, trying not to say anything weird. Aizawa was an incredibly capable drunk, but he just completely lost his filter. And he knew that people (Yamada and Kayama) liked to take advantage of that.
"I dunno, you just don't seem like the party type. You seem like the grumpy stay-at-home type. So what are you doing here?" Ashido asked. Aizawa sighed. She was right, he wasn't the type to go out much. And he definitely wasn't ready to entertain Ashido who was a handful when she wasn't drunk.
"I'm getting another drink. You better do well in your exams, Ashido." he muttered and walked away towards the bar. He really needed that drink. He looked around over his shoulder to make sure that Ashido wasn't following him. Thank God, she wasn't. Aizawa knew getting another drink probably wasn't a smart decision at the moment, but it was the only decision that would grant him some peace of mind.
It took him a while and some bumping into people, before he had finally made it to the bar. He said down on one of the stools, burying his face in his hands. Why did he let Yamada tell him it might be fun to come here? Here he was, bored out of his mind, with a bunch of teenagers, way too drunk and in a suit that was way too warm for this kind of weather (not to mention the stuffy air inside).
"Looks like someone over there really needs your help right now." he heard someone say. It was followed by a warm and hearty laugh. Aizawa didn't want to look up. He just waited until some steps came closer, before lifting up his head and looking at the bartender that gave him a polite smile.
"Can I get you anything, Sir?" he asked.
"Another whiskey, please. Black Nikka Clear. No ice." Aizawa answered and handed him his empty glass. The bartender nodded, taking the glass off him and turning around to the bar. He got a fresh glass from a shelf and the bottle of whiskey, filling the glass in a quick and languid motion.
"That's 380 yen, when you're ready, Sir." the bartender said to him. Aizawa got his wallet out of his suit pants and pulled out his credit card. He handed it to the bartender who left with the card and brought it back a few seconds later. Aizawa had started sipping on his drink, unsure if he should really down another one.
After handing his credit card back to him the bartender went back to the other end of the bar, talking to someone. Aizawa looked over to see what was going on. He was curious to see why the bartender wanted to get back so quickly. There was a woman sitting there, young, dark hair tied up into a bun with a few strands of hair falling out at the sides. She was laughing loudly and shaking her head quickly. She then turned her head to glance behind her and Aizawa nearly choked on his whiskey, when he realized that this woman was Kaori Shinsou.
What was she doing here? Shinsou was far from a socialite and Aizawa knew exactly that she usually skipped big parties like this one. She hadn't seen him yet and kept talking to the bartender. Before he knew what he was doing, he had gotten up from his stool at the bar and made his way over to her, taking in more and more details. She looked absolutely gorgeous. Fuck.
She was wearing a dark red dress that had a very low back and that revealed her defined shoulder blades. The way she was sitting her back was curving beautifully and there was one strand of dark hair that was caressing her neck every time she moved slightly. The way she was tilting her head when she was laughing, thus exposing more of her neck, sent shivers down Aizawa's spine.
"Oh, really, did you?" he heard her say. The bartender was looking down at her giving her a seductive smile. Aizawa caught himself thinking that this guy better back off. Quickly. Shinsou wasn't some cheap fling.
"Yeah, people tell me all kinds of stuff, you'd be surprised." the bartender replied to her. Aizawa had to keep himself from rolling his eyes at this guy. Was he trying to impress her with some stories a few drunk people told him?
"Oh, I'm sure they do." Shinsou answered with a small chuckle. Aizawa could tell that she wasn't impressed and it forced a small smile on his lips. He carefully laid a hand on her shoulder, a little surprised at how warm and soft her skin was (and that he still had the mental capability to notice it).
"Miss Shinsou, what a surprise to see you here." he said to her. She quickly turned around, her face looking a little annoyed at first, but quickly lighting up when she saw who it was. She gave him a wide smile.
"Mr. Aizawa! You have no idea how glad I am to see you." she replied, her words sounding a little more sloppy than usual.
"The two of you know each other?" the bartender asked, not looking quite as happy as before anymore.
"He's my professor." Shinsou quickly explained. The bartender mumbled something and walked away to another patron sitting at the bar.
"Was he bothering you?" Aizawa wanted to know quietly once he was out of earshot. He suddenly realized that his hand was still resting on her shoulder. He quickly took it away, but had no idea what else to do with it, so he did the first thing that came to mind and shoved it in the pockets of his suit pants.
"Oh, he was fine. A little annoying, but alright. Apparently studies Health Economics or something. Plus, he was giving me a few drinks on the house, so I won't complain." Shinsou replied with a laugh. Aizawa huffed.
"Sounds about right." he mumbled. He saw that Shinsou was looking him up and down, biting her lip a little. Fuck. Aizawa gulped, realizing that he was completely smitten with her and drunk enough not to care about any consequences.
"What brings you here, Mr. Aizawa? You're looking sharp in that suit." she said, sipping her drink without taking her eyes off him. Aizawa was having a hard time remembering that she was his student and he could get fired.
"One of the other professors talked me into going. This is usually not really my kinda thing. Now I'm kinda glad I came, though." he replied. The last bit of his sober mind that was left was mentally slapping him for saying that, but Aizawa quickly silenced it by taking another big sip of whiskey.
"And why's that?" Shinsou asked, looking down at her glass and back up at him, a knowing smile on her lips. What happened to that mess of a girl from a few days back? The one with coffee stains on her blouse and dark circles under her eyes? Aizawa could have sworn she was flirting with him. And in his drunk mind two could play at that game. Right now all he wanted was Kaori Shinsou.
"Because I met a beautiful woman at the bar." he answered. Shinsou laughed a little and looked around the bar.
"And who would that be?" she wanted to know leaning a little closer to him, a playful smile on her lips.
"I think you know, Kaori." he said, taking a step towards her. There wasn't much room between them now and Aizawa could see the little goosebumps on her arm. He smiled. He still had it. She started laughing and was leaning onto his shoulder for support. Her dress moved up a tiny bit from her moving forward.
"Mr. Aizawa, are you drunk?" she asked, having a tough time not falling off her bar stool. She was clearly more drunk than he was.
"Maybe a little." he admitted, holding onto her waist to help her get her balance back. She almost spilled her drink, too. He took it off her and put it on the counter after making sure she was fine sitting on her own.
"You're such a gentleman when you're drunk. And you're really smooth. But you're usually really smooth anytime." she said, watching him finish his whiskey.
"Smooth?"
"Yeah, it's really hot, not gonna lie." she replied, somewhat slurring her words. Dear Lord, she was really drunk.
"Shinsou, how much did you have to drink?" he wanted to know, his mind a little clearer all of a sudden. Her smile faded as she was obviously trying to remember. After a while she looked back up at him, the grin returning to her face.
"I have no idea." she answered and laughed.
"Are you feeling okay?" Aizawa wanted to know.

29 - Shinsou
Kaori Shinsou has always been fascinated by people’s minds. She is one of the best students in her Criminal Psychology course at U.A. and - being the lucky girl she is - her professor is not only one handsome dude, but is also working on the case of the serial killer Stain - a case that has been going on for years. As she is about to become Professor Aizawa’s TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country…
Oh, are we really born free?
(Nerina Pallot - Rousseau)
Kaori Shinsou wasn't sure what she was supposed to take away from this day. A whole lot had happened. It had started with her spilling coffee all over herself. She almost had fallen asleep in Ishiyama's course again, but thankfully he didn't notice this time (even though he made a remark about her coffee-stained blouse). Then, during lunch, Nishiyama had been making snarky comments at her constantly.
Kaori was trying to look for Hitoshi, but he was nowhere to be seen. She wondered if he had even gone to school. It was also during lunch that she had gotten that weirdass email from Aizawa. It really bugged her that he just wouldn't talk to her anymore. The only communication they had was via email. And even that was minimal. He only ever sent an email when there was something important now.
And now he wanted her to meet with Tsukauchi during office hours? What did Tsukauchi want from her? Kaori had hoped that she might hear something about it either before or after the Criminal Psychology class, but nothing. Everything was as usual, except for Aizawa completely ignoring her. It was starting to really piss her off how he was ignoring her all the time.
The rest of the day went by and Kaori figured it would be a good idea to see if she could borrow a blouse or a shirt from someone else. The thing was that only Takami was still on campus. Through some miracle of fate today was the single day in his whole life he was actually wearing a dress shirt. So they had met in the library and changed shirts. The good thing about Takami was that he just didn't give a shit.
So it didn't bother him walking around in Kaori's coffee stained blouse (which honestly looked ridiculous on him, because it was a woman's blouse and it was way too small for him). Kaori was pretty happy with this exchange. Takami's shirt was far from spotless, but there were barely any visible stains on it. At least she wouldn't look like an idiot in front of Tsukauchi.
After the exchange had happened, Kaori had decided to take a bit of a nap in the library, before continuing to study. She had a good bit of time until she had to go to her little chat with Tsukauchi.
She hadn't realised, however, how tired she was and was thankfully woken up by the librarian who shushed her out of the library, because they were closing. Which was just in time, because she really should have been at that meeting already. On the way to the classroom, she was quickly checking her texts and apparently Takami had ended up in detention. Whether that was for walking around campus shirtless or in her blouse was a little unclear and she had no time to ask.
And then Tsukauchi had asked her - the walking, talking mess that she was - whether she wanted to join the National Police Department for her work studies. What a question was that even. Anyone who'd say no to that opportunity was basically committing professional suicide.
And the whole interaction with Aizawa after that - it had been kind of awkward, but... she was glad that they were talking again and that she knew what had happened. She was still pissed about those rumours (which clearly came from Nishiyama, let's be honest here). But at least she was going to the summer camp with her hot professor and Nishiyama was... well, not.
Kaori opened the door to her home. Thankfully, it had been later in the evening when she was on her way home, so the sun wasn't beating down as mercilessly anymore. Today had been an insanely hot day. Maybe she should take the time and head to the U.A. pool one of these days. If the weather stayed as good as this, then maybe a nice refreshing swim would be worth enduring the crowded pool.
"Toshi, are you home?" Kaori shouted, as she dropped her bag on the kitchen chair. First of all, she needed coffee. She got the kettle and filled it up with water, before starting to clean out the french press.
"Where the hell have you been?" Hitoshi asked, sticking his head out of his door. He looked like he was up to something.
"Where have you been all day? I didn't see you during lunch." Kaori countered his question. He shrugged.
"I might or might not have gotten lunch somewhere else. How long do you think the shops will still be open?" he wanted to know. Kaori raised an eyebrow at him as she started putting the coffee grounds in the french press.
"What do you need?" she replied.
"Nothing, just wanted to have a look."
"Oh my God, Hitoshi, you're the worst liar in the entire world." Kaori said and poured the boiling water over the coffee grounds. She turned back to Hitoshi who was rubbing the back of his neck.
"You heard about this black tie party that the Psychology department is organizing in Shibuya?" he asked. Kaori huffed. Hitoshi probably thought that this was inconspicuous, but it wasn't. At all.
"Who asked you to go?" she wanted to know with a smile. Of course she had heard of that party. It was organized every year and a lot of people got really, really blackout drunk every year.
"No one, I... I was wondering if you'd maybe wanna go with me?" he said. Kaori raised an eyebrow.
"Me? Why do you wanna go in the first place?"
"I thought it might be fun."
"Bullshit."
"I overheard Kaminari and his friends talking about going. So I figured, if I go we might get talking or something. Plus, it would make sense for me to go, since I'm in the Psychology department." Hitoshi explained, looking a little embarrassed. Kaori smiled and slowly pushed down the plunger in the coffee press.
"Why aren't you going on your own then?" she asked.
"Going alone would suck." Hitoshi replied
"Okay, that's fair I guess. Want a cup?" Kaori said. Hitoshi nodded.
"Is that why you asked about the shops?" she wanted to know. Hitoshi nodded again and grabbed one of the cookies out of the tin that was left on the kitchen counter. Kaori got two cups out of the cupboard and was about to start pouring the coffee into them when Hitoshi stopped her.
"Please don't." he said and took the french press out of her hand. Kaori watched impatiently, as he poured the coffee slowly. It was like torture. She needed a quick fix and Hitoshi was making a ritual out of it.
"For fucks' sake, Toshi. It's getting cold, before we can drink it." she muttered, tapping her fingers on the countertop passive-aggressively. Hitoshi just laughed and shook his head calmly.
"It won't get cold. Patience, Kao-chan." he replied and finished pouring the coffee. Kaori grabbed her cup energetically and of course spilled some drops of it on Takami's shirt. Didn't matter, she'd have to wash it anyway, before giving it back.
"So. Why are you back so late?" Hitoshi asked again, slowly sipping from his coffee. Kaori hopped onto the kitchen counter and leaned her head against the cupboards. For some reason she had always preferred sitting on top of the counter to sitting on a chair, like a normal person.
"I had a meeting with someone and they made a proposition. I accepted." she answered. Hitoshi raised an eyebrow, clearly not happy with that answer. Kaori felt lazy, however. If he wanted to know more he'd have to ask.
"What kind of proposition? Sounds kinda weird if you put it like that. And whose shirt is that? I know you don't own a shirt like this." Hitoshi replied.
"That's Takami's shirt. Had to borrow it, because I spilled coffee all over my blouse." Kaori said with a sigh.
"Ah, that's why he was running around campus shirtless. So what the hell was that meeting about?"
"Detective Tsukauchi asked me if I wanted to continue my work studies under him in the National Police Department." Kaori answered, as if it was completely unimportant. She just had no energy left at this moment. Hitoshi looked at her, his eyes full of disbelief. He shook his head.
"No fucking way."
"Yup. Gonna work with Aizawa. First thing I'm gonna do is help with the Stain interrogation. Kind of Hannibal style I'd imagine." Kaori replied with a shrug. Hitoshi's eyes looked like they might fall out of their sockets. Which was a disturbing thing to imagine, really, if Kaori hadn't seen worse.
"You're fucking with me." he finally said. Kaori laughed.
"No, Toshi, I'm not fucking with you."
"You and Aizawa working together is gonna get awkward, isn't it? Like, with the two of you not talking anymore and all?" he asked.
"I think it'll be fine actually. Aizawa and I talked after I accepted Tsukauchi's offer and we're all good now. He asked me to come to the summer camp with him, as his TA." Kaori explained.
"But you're not his TA."
"Not yet."
Hitoshi raised his eyebrows and Kaori could absolutely tell what he was thinking. She sighed and shook her head, taking a big gulp of coffee, before she even thought of replying to that face he was making.
"No. Don't say it. I'm not sleeping with my professor, okay? That's why he was weird to me, because he heard the rumours. But it's bullshit and we're all good again. Besties and what not."
"Well, if you say so. You wanna check for some clothes to wear to the party? We can see what we have and what we still need." Hitoshi suggested. Kaori nodded. She should be studying, but she knew Hitoshi wouldn't let her.
"Sure. The night is young."

28 - Aizawa
Kaori Shinsou has always been fascinated by people’s minds. She is one of the best students in her Criminal Psychology course at U.A. and - being the lucky girl she is - her professor is not only one handsome dude, but is also working on the case of the serial killer Stain - a case that has been going on for years. As she is about to become Professor Aizawa’s TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country…
Welcome to my cage, little lover
(MISSIO - Bottom Of The Deep Blue Sea)
It was killing Shouta Aizawa to act so cold towards Shinsou. And it was even worse that she seemed to take it all to heart way too much. The girl had been a mess for the last week. The circles under her eyes got deeper, she was constantly spilling her coffee which left coffee stains all over her clothes. The corners of her eyes looked red, irritated and swollen. Aizawa had no clue what to do about this.
Of course today was the day that Tsukauchi had finished all his paperwork and decided to talk to Shinsou. Aizawa didn't even have the heart to tell her in person, so he just shot her an email, telling her that Tsukauchi wanted to meet with her and to come to the classroom at 5 in the afternoon, during office hours. Hopefully she would actually come. He'd understand if she'd just ignore his emails at the moment.
Suddenly there was a soft, but urgent knock on the door. That had to be her. She was around five minutes late and Aizawa really hoped that she had made up a good excuse for that. Tsukauchi wasn't harsh in any way, but he did not like people being late, even though he'd never actually say it to someone.
"Come in." he called out. The door quickly opened and Shinsou rushed in, a nervous smile on her face. She was wearing a pair of loose fitting black slacks and a blouse that only had a minimal amount of coffee stains on it. Her hair was open and looked quite messy and her eyes seemed sleepy. Had she been napping in the library again?
"I'm sorry, Mr. Tsukauchi, Sir. I was studying and lost track of time, so I had to rush up here. I swear, any normal week I'd never be late." she said, giving him a weak smile. She glanced at Aizawa nervously.
"No worries, Miss Shinsou. Please, sit down." Tsukauchi answered with a smile. Aizawa watched Shinsou slowly pull out one of the chairs and sit down carefully, almost as if she was trying not to make any noise. He had another look at her face and it looked like there was the imprint of a book on her cheek. So she had been sleeping in the library again after all.
"I'm not sure how much Mr. Aizawa has already told you about this little meeting..." Tsukauchi started. Kaori looked up at him and their eyes met. Aizawa had no idea how to react so he just kept eye contact. It was Shinsou who looked away after a few seconds and back at Tsukauchi.
"He hasn't told me anything, Sir. Just that you wanted to meet me." she replied. Tsukauchi nodded.
"Alright. The purpose of this meeting is that I have a proposition for you. I've seen your work in the arson case and the Stain incidents in Hosu City and I have to say I was impressed. I asked your superior... Tensei Iida... about you and he only had good things to say about you. The same goes for Mr. Aizawa as your professor. We could really use someone like you on our team." Tsukauchi started explaining. Shinsou gave him a confused look, as if she didn't quite understand.
"But you have Mr. Aizawa, don't you?" she asked and looked at him, surprise in her eyes. A tiny smile was tugging at the corners of her mouth.
"We do, but there is a lot of work and Mr. Aizawa also has his teaching job at the university to look after. You're a really bright student and are doing good work in your specific area. I thought it would be a shame to have you stuck at the Hosu City Department for the foreseeable future, especially since your reports are already in a lot of our files anyway. So I wanted to ask you if you would like to transfer from Hosu to the National Police Department to continue your work studies there." Tsukauchi replied. Shinsou looked at him with an open mouth.
"But... I don't understand..." she muttered. Aizawa leaned back in his chair and folded his arms. He had a hard time not to smile at her being so perplexed.
"We want you to do your work studies as a Criminal Psychologist at the National Police Department. You'll be working closely with Mr. Aizawa, which shouldn't be a problem, since you seem to be getting on perfectly fine in this setting already..." Tsukauchi started, not noticing the sudden tension that filled the room. Shinsou gave him a look he couldn't even interpret, while biting her lip, and he was shifting in his chair uncomfortably. Maybe they should have a talk after this.
"... which means he will have a lighter workload and you get to work on more interesting and complex cases. Of course you'll get enough time to finish up any work in Hosu and to prepare for your exams right now. Mr. Aizawa has been very insistent on you getting some time off to relax. I think the first thing we would like you to do is to talk to Stain in Tartarus, once he is well enough for that. We'll see how things go from there. What do you think?" Tsukauchi finished his proposal.
Aizawa didn't think he had ever seen Shinsou this awe-struck. She seemed to still be processing what Tsukauchi had just told her. It was a quite spectacular offer for someone who was still in university. It wasn't unheard of, it had happened before, but not very often. It was an honour.
"I... you want me to transfer my work studies? From the Hosu department to the... the national department?" she wanted to know. She almost made it sound as if it was the most ridiculous thing she had ever heard.
"That is right. You don't have to give me an answer right away, but I have been talking to Mr. Iida and I have been looking into all the paperwork and if you just say the word, we can get everything in motion." Tsukauchi replied and got up, gathering up his things. Shinsou still seemed like she wasn't completely aware of what was going on.
"Well, anyway, Mr. Aizawa has my contact details, so you can let me know when you have made a decision. I have another appointment soon, so I'll have to get going..."
"I accept." Shinsou suddenly said, just as Tsukauchi was about to open the door to the classroom. He turned around and gave her a surprised look.
"What?"
"I accept. This offer is such an honour and it took me a while to realize what was actually happening, but... Mr. Tsukauchi, there is nothing I have ever wanted more than to work for the National Police Department." she told him in a strangely neutral and professional tone of voice. Aizawa smiled a little. She didn't seem too enthusiastic at this moment, but he knew exactly that she was.
"Well, that was a faster decision than I thought it would be. I'm glad. I'll make sure to get everything ready and be in contact with you about the details of the work study and when you can start. I'll talk to you. Goodbye, Miss Shinsou." Tsukauchi replied with a friendly smile on his face.
"Goodbye, Sir." she answered, her voice sounding dazed and a small smile slowly growing on her face, as he was on his way out. For a few seconds she was just staring at the void in front of her and then let out a gleeful laugh. She looked up at Aizawa with the biggest grin he had ever seen on her.
"Well done, Shinsou." he said to her and nodded. Her smile started to fade again. She started picking up her bag and got up from her chair.
"I'm sorry, Sir, I should get going as well." she mumbled and made her way towards the door. Aizawa didn't want her to go. He got up from his chair. Maybe now was a good time to bring it up.
"Don't leave, Shinsou." he replied. She stopped in her tracks and slowly turned around to him. She looked like she was feeling miserable. Aizawa pinched the bridge of his nose. How did this all happen?
"Sir?" she asked, her voice barely louder than a whisper. Well, Aizawa, here goes nothing. Good luck.
"I know, I might have been a little... difficult during the last week. And I'm sorry about that. There have been a few rumours that have come to my attention and I realized that I might need to try harder to avoid... giving off the wrong impression. The way I did that was probably not the right way. But I hope you understand, Shinsou." he did his best to explain. Why was this such an awkward thing to talk about?
"I see. So what are you gonna do about those rumours then?" she wanted to know with a raised eyebrow. Aizawa sighed. Honestly, he had no idea. But she couldn't write her exams in that state, that much was clear.
"I don't know yet. I'll figure something out. Just focus on your exams and don't worry about it." he answered. She nodded and a small smile crept on her face again. God, it was good to see her smile at him again.
"Alright then, Mr. Aizawa. Was there... anything else?" she asked.
"Yes, actually. The summer camp." Aizawa replied. He should have really brought this up way earlier than he did, but there were some obvious reasons he hadn't done that. Shinsou seemed confused.
"But the summer camp is only for the first three years, I'm not going..." she protested. She knew exactly what the summer camp could be like and it was harsh. The third years usually got off easy, since it was their last year before they went on to work or before they went into active service.
"Every TA is accompanying their professor for the summer camp, if they are the coordinator for a course. Now, I know you're not my TA yet, but... to be honest, I really need some help with these kids, because they're doing my head in. Plus, you could use the time to get some training done. I'm talking about weapon training specifically and maybe some more hand-to-hand self-defense training." he explained. He knew he would probably die if he had to handle that course of first years on his own.
"They're that bad?" Shinsou wanted to know.
"You have no idea." Aizawa said. With all that awkwardness suddenly gone, he really wanted a cigarette now. He'd need one before he'd be able to get back to preparing the exams for his first year course and the Criminal Psychology course. At least he was still further ahead than Yamada.
"Well, I don't think I have any plans for the summer, so I should be good to go. If it's okay with the administration, that is." Shinsou replied with a smile. Aizawa huffed. As if the administration was going to say anything.
"Administration doesn't give a shit."

27 - Shinsou
Kaori Shinsou has always been fascinated by people’s minds. She is one of the best students in her Criminal Psychology course at U.A. and - being the lucky girl she is - her professor is not only one handsome dude, but is also working on the case of the serial killer Stain - a case that has been going on for years. As she is about to become Professor Aizawa’s TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country…
So come on honey, blow yourself to pieces
(Lykke Li - Youth Knows No Pain)
"I just don't know, Hana. He was being really weird the entire week and I just don't get it." Kaori Shinsou told her friend. Uehara gave her a pensive look as she was chewing on her pen.
Actually, they had met to do assignments and cram for the exams at the end of the term. But it had quickly started to become a discussion about Aizawa acting weird towards... well, kind of everyone, but especially towards Kaori. And she didn't like it one bit. She was honestly upset by it.
"It is really unsettling. I got so used to the two of you just chatting away and now it's like the whole atmosphere in the class has changed. And I hate how much Nishiyama gets off on it, too." Uehara said with a frown.
"I know. She's the worst. You know what she said to me while I was queuing to pay for my lunch yesterday?"
"What did she say?"
"Looks like your grades are gonna drop, now that the professor broke up with you. Too bad it's so close to the exams." Kaori said, mocking Nishiyama's high-pitched voice and posh accent. Uehara chuckled a little and shook her head in disbelief. If there was someone they both hated, it was Nishiyama.
"She really needs to get a life. I swear, I can't stand seeing her face on a good day." Uehara mumbled.
"Same. I mean, what also really, really annoys me is how she assumes that I'm fucking Aizawa. Like how did that stupid thing even start? Why does everyone think that?" Kaori complained. Uehara just shrugged, even though she could think of a few reasons why people would think that.
"I can't even focus on studying with everything that's going on. Like, it really bothers me how cold Aizawa has gotten all of a sudden. And Nishiyama being a bitch on top of all that? I can't do it, Hana. It's wearing me down." Kaori admitted and started massaging her temples with a frenzied look in her eyes. Uehara raised an eyebrow and got out her phone, quickly typing something.
"Look, don't worry about it. I'm sure Aizawa's just stressed or something. It'll be fine. Maybe he wants to avoid giving off the impression that you two are too close, with the exams around the corner, you know?" Uehara said.
"I just don't know, Hana. From what I've gathered he should be less stressed at the moment, with Stain caught and everything. I don't know, maybe I'm overlooking something here. It sucks." Kaori replied.
"I get it, babygirl. It really does suck. Are you still going to be his TA next term?" Uehara asked. Kaori sighed, feeling a little better, though. Uehara had this habit of calling her friends 'babygirl' and while Kaori pretended not to hear it, she absolutely loved it when Uehara called her that.
"I think so. As far as I know the application's through and official. I don't know how I'll survive that term honestly." Kaori said and rested her head on the opened text book that was lying on the table.
"Maybe you can ask him what's up when you're his TA or something." Uehara suggested. Kaori groaned.
"But that's such a long time! And the exams are right in the middle of it. Please tell me, how I can possibly write an exam worthy of what I'm capable of when I can't stop thinking about why Aizawa's being a total asshole right now?" she wondered melodramatically. Kaori chuckled.
"Oh, come on. He's not really being an asshole. He's just being less friendly with you." Uehara remarked.
"Yeah, but that's the thing. We were on really good terms and all, but all of a sudden - and nothing weird has happened or anything - he's all cold to me. And I know he's my professor and I'm just a student and all that jazz, but I'd just like an explanation on why he did a 180 on me."
"Yeah, it is kind of weird."
"Plus, the thing is, I absolutely cannot focus on anything when things are like this. Which means of course my grades will plummet. And that means that Nishiyama will think I'm right and may start some weird crusade to get me out of the course." Kaori added. In addition to her insomnia this whole story had been causing her to lose even more sleep and she was starting to get paranoid.
"How would she get you out of the course with that?" Uehara asked. Kaori shrugged. She felt miserable.
"Well, she could use it as an argument that Aizawa and I are having an affair - which is not the case - and that would mean he'd either have to resign, give up the whole course or I have to be transferred. And out of those three options, I think we all know which one is the least troublesome."
"Did... did you look up school policy on that?"
"Yup." Kaori said, suddenly realising that she had let her guard down just there. Uehara smiled a little.
"Oh. My. God. So I was right all along? You do have a thing for Aizawa?" she wanted to know. Kaori sighed. There was no point in keeping it quiet anymore anyway. Time to come clean.
"Yeah, of course. He's hot. He's smart. He just has this classy air about him. I want him to bend me over a desk and fuck me until I see stars." Kaori admitted and buried her face in her books. Uehara gave her a surprised look, while Kaori felt like she might as well just die from embarrassment and humiliation.
"Wow. That was unexpected. Like I knew you liked him, but that was... wow." Uehara said. Kaori lifted her head a little.
"Yeah, well, now you know. Just kill me now."
"Shit, you're in deep, huh?"
"It sure seems so."
Kaori sighed and buried her head in her hands again. This whole situation was really frustrating and she just didn't know what to do. Peeking through her fingers she saw Uehara smile at her phone.
"Well, I think I've got something to take your mind off it." she said when she looked up again. Kaori raised an eyebrow. Her eyes looked terribly bloodshot, her face was pale and there were dark circles under her eyes.
"What do you have for me?" she wanted to know. From the grin on Uehara's face Kaori knew it had to be something pretty good.
"Well, Takami's downstairs waiting with a little something." Uehara answered smiling. Kaori had to think for a second before she knew what Uehara meant. Once she realized it, a smile crept on her face.
"Let's not keep him waiting then." Kaori said and got up from the table. She knew she wouldn't be able to focus on any studying right now. It was 1 am and the little something that Takami was bringing had to be weed.
Kaori didn't smoke a lot, but she did from time to time. It didn't have much of an effect on her, but it was able to calm her down and it even helped her sleep when she needed it. Maybe this was exactly what she needed. Plus, since they had finished third year the school had stopped doing random drug tests.
"That's the spirit." Uehara replied and quickly put on a pair of shoes. Kaori quickly knocked at Hitoshi's door.
"Hey, Toshi, we're heading out for a bit." she said. Out of the room came a muffled sound. Kaori grabbed her set of keys and went out of the door, Uehara quickly following her. They made their way down the stairs. When Kaori opened the front door, Takami was standing right in front of them with his shaggy, blond hair and in his pilot jacket. He gave the two girls a big grin.
"Just outside or on the roof?" he asked them. Kaori smiled widely and gave him a tight hug. Takami seemed a little taken aback by that, but he wasn't going to complain. As Kaori let go of him, she realized how much she needed that hug.
"Roof. Let's go. You wanna stay over for some burgers? We can order some takeout." Kaori said and waved him inside the house. The three of them made their way up the stairs that led to the roof. The night was pretty cloudy and the air was hot and heavy. It would probably rain any second.
"So, Hana tells me you brought a little something?" Kaori asked. Takami grinned and nodded. He pulled out a joint from the inside pocket of his jacket and held it up to Kaori's face.
"Hana told me you needed to chill out for a bit." Takami replied with a grin and produced a lighter.
"I absolutely do. Who'll do the honours?" Kaori said. Takami handed her the joint and lighted the tip of it.
"The stressed girl should be doing the honours." Uehara commented with a grin. Kaori took a drag of the joint, deeply inhaling the smoke and passing the joint on to Takami. Once he had taken it, she started coughing. The smoke always irritated her lungs, no matter how much she tried to get used to it.
"You okay?" Takami asked as he passed on the joint to Uehara.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Kaori answered, her voice sounding strained.
"So what's got you so upset that Uehara had to call me up at 1 am for some weed?" Takami wanted to know. Kaori sighed.
"I'm just a little frustrated. Can't really focus on studying or on my assignments. I don't know." she replied.
"Is this about Aizawa?" Takami asked, as he handed her the joint. She took a long drag and looked up into the sky.
"How the hell did you hear about that?"
"People talk around school. Or is it the job?"
Kaori sighed, as Takami took the joint off her again. What was she supposed to tell him? It really was a mix of both. Sure, Aizawa was weighing on her mind, but being away from work for the whole week after the Stain incident was making her nervous, too. She felt like she was missing something.
"It's both, really. I don't know, it's like I've been on edge for so long and now something is missing and it's frustrating and at the same time Aizawa's being weird without a reason, it's just.. I don't know." she told Takami, somewhat feeling the onset of the high. Weed never did too much to Kaori, it really just relaxed her. Takami was the same at this point, his tolerance had gone up a lot. Uehara was the one to watch out for, if she had only a little bit too much, she went completely non-verbal for a while.
"Well, if you want my two cents... it's all gonna be fine in the end. Everyone's stressed with exams and all, after that things will surely be alright again." Takami said, handing the joint back to Kaori. It was what he always said when they were smoking together (which wasn't that often), but it was strangely calming to Kaori when she was high. Everything will be alright.
"Thanks, Takami. That... that was a really nice thing for you to say." Kaori replied and leaned back, looking up into the night sky, the thick clouds slowly drifting across it, illuminated by the lights of Hosu City. If Kaori had slept enough and her eyes hadn't been that dry there would have been tears rolling down her cheeks right now. With her eyes as dry as they were, it was just really nice to feel them watering up with tears.
"Oh shit, what the fuck is this?" Uehara swore and held out her hands with the palms up. It took Kaori a while to realize what she meant, but there were thick raindrops falling down on them and they were getting more and more by the second. Kaori was relishing the feeling of rain on her face. It felt more intense than usual. And it was really relaxing. She didn't want to leave, but Takami and Uehara were already scrambling up their stuff to go back inside. At least they had managed to finish the joint.
"Hey, hey, Shinsou, you coming or are you letting yourself get washed off the roof?" Takami shouted. She looked over at him.
"Feels kinda nice to be in the rain. But I guess I'll come in with you." Kaori replied with a smile, before slowly getting up.

26 - Aizawa
Kaori Shinsou has always been fascinated by people’s minds. She is one of the best students in her Criminal Psychology course at U.A. and - being the lucky girl she is - her professor is not only one handsome dude, but is also working on the case of the serial killer Stain - a case that has been going on for years. As she is about to become Professor Aizawa’s TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country…
Deep down we both knew it was trouble by design
(Cage The Elephant - Too Late To Say Goodbye)
Shouta Aizawa gave Tsukauchi a long hard look. He really couldn't believe this man sometimes. Sure, he was doing his job well and all, but he just kept having terrible ideas, like waking him up in the middle of the night with a phone call, just so he could head out to a crime scene and have a look at it, when he could just gather the same information from a well-made report. (Sometimes Aizawa suspected he didn't trust people with writing good reports, but that was a story for another day.) Or that thing he just suggested about Kaori Shinsou.
"Are you being serious right now?" Aizawa asked him, pretty sure that he was trying to play some sort of prank on him.
"Of course! I've seen her work on two different cases now and she has been brilliant. Would be a shame to let her waste away at the Hosu City department. Or have her go back to Tartarus next term." Tsukauchi replied. Aizawa pinched the bridge of his nose and took a deep breath.
"Look, I get it. She's really good at this and by all means, she should get to work in a higher ranking job. But Tsukauchi, have you looked at her? That girl has been doing night shift after night shift in Hosu, then she goes to university and then straight back to work. I've seen her asleep in the damn library, Tsukauchi! She needs a fucking break." he explained. Tsukauchi nodded quickly.
"Of course, of course, I'm not saying she should come here and intern with us right away. I'll have to look at a ton of paperwork for that anyway, and obviously she'd have to agree to it. We'd give her some time off, especially during exams. But she'd be able to work on high profile cases, instead of some teenagers burning stuff in trash cans. Think about it." Tsukauchi said.
Of course he was right. He had a very valid point. It would be a shame to waste Shinsou's talent when it came to criminal psychology with her staying in the Hosu City department. She would have much more room to grow if she was interning with and working for the National Police Department.
But Shinsou already had no idea what a healthy work-life balance meant. Aizawa knew she didn't, because he was the same. And while he loved his job as a teacher and part-time criminal psychologist for the National Police Department, he also knew that it sucked getting that little sleep and being under the kind of high pressure that these kinds of cases brought with them.
"I mean, in the end it will be her decision. But I don't think it's a good idea. She's overworking herself as it is. There were several times during the last few weeks when she just collapsed from exhaustion. This already isn't healthy for her. Now imagine Shinsou getting to work for a much bigger organization - she'd work herself to death because she felt she had to." Aizawa replied.
"Sounds like someone I know." Tsukauchi told him with a smile.
"Exactly. And that's why I know she'd get much more stressed than she already is. I know I am stressing myself more than is good for me."
"Well, have you considered that the two of you would be working together? Which means you would both technically have a smaller workload and that benefits both you and her. Plus, that way you can still have an eye on her and make sure she gets some time off, if that's so important to you." Tsukauchi said.
Aizawa had to admit he hadn't thought about that. It could possibly even convince him. But there was no way he'd admit that to Tsukauchi. Thinking about it, he quite liked the idea of being able to work with Shinsou. After all, he had been itching to show her some of the confidential files on the Stain case, just to be able to get her perspective. Aizawa didn't like working closely with people, but he could imagine working with Kaori Shinsou. He sighed. Tsukauchi had already won.
"Well, go and suggest it to her. I still don't think it's the best idea, but in the end it is her decision. And I agree, it would be nice to get her somewhere higher up than the Hosu Department." Aizawa finally said. Tsukauchi gave him a knowing smile and got up from his chair in the school cafeteria.
"Sounds good to me, then. I'll get the paperwork in order and then I can hopefully see her about it sometime next week. I'd like to get her on for interviewing Stain by any means." Tsukauchi replied.
"That would be a good idea, she's been following that case since forever. She's obsessed with it. Anyway, get your paperwork done and then see if she wants to do it or not." Aizawa mumbled.
He still didn't quite feel alright with that decision, but there was nothing he could do either way. Tsukauchi had come to him to test the waters and see what he had to say about her academic abilities. And those were as good as they could possibly be. He had nothing bad to say about Shinsou.
"Oh yeah, before I leave. The two of you might want to be a little more discreet with... whatever it is that's going on between you." Tsukauchi said and winked at him. Aizawa gave him a confused look.
"What?" he asked, not expecting to hear anything like that. Of course he had heard of the stupid rumours, but he had never paid them much mind. To him they were just that - stupid rumours.
"I don't know if there is anything going on between you and Shinsou, but there are rumours. And it is quite obvious that you are... fond of her." Tsukauchi replied. Aizawa was completely dumbfounded by this. He had never expected anyone to bring this up to his actual face. Yes, he was fond of Shinsou. He liked her, there was no point denying it. And there was also no point denying that she was an attractive young woman. But there was absolutely nothing going on.
"I don't know what you're thinking, but there is really nothing going on..." Aizawa started, but Tsukauchi interrupted him.
"Look, I really don't care. I'm just saying this as a friend. People get certain impressions, that's all I'm saying."
And with that Tsukauchi left. Aizawa had no idea how to react to any of that. He had always thought that all those rumours were somewhat ridiculous. There was absolutely no substance to this. But now Tsukauchi had him second-guessing himself. What if there was anything inappropriate between them?
It wasn't like anything they'd do would be illegal, but it would surely be against school policy if they were having an affair of any sort. Especially as long as Shinsou was in his course. An image got conjured up in his mind of Kaori Shinsou in one of her short skirts and her knee socks on, sitting on the heavy oak desk in his office, leaning back, legs spread wide, looking at him with those lascivious eyes and...
Fuck. Where the hell did that come from? Aizawa was trying to tell himself that it was only because of what Tsukauchi had insinuated that he had just been thinking about that, but somewhere in the back of his mind he knew that he definitely had a thing for Shinsou - he had just been suppressing it, because... well, because he was her professor and she was his student.
This was bad. This was beyond bad. How the hell did he not notice how far he let all this get? Those little mind games where he intentionally wouldn't call on her for ages during class, just to see her essentially fighting for his attention, the way she'd almost grow in her seat every time he gave her any sort of praise - hell, him taking her on as a teacher's assistant.
None of that was helping in any way. Maybe he just had to find a way to at least publicly distance himself from her. Try not asking her to stay after class so many goddamn times. That would be a start. Aizawa sighed and took a sip from his half-empty cup of coffee. It had gotten cold. Of course.
"Morning, prof!" he heard a cheerful voice say behind him. Speaking of the devil. He turned in his chair and saw Kaori Shinsou standing there, a lunch tray in her hands, obviously on the way over to her friends.
"What do you want, Shinsou?" he asked, feeling a headache coming on. He was in no mood to deal with this right now.
"Just happened to pass by on my way. I saw Tsukauchi talk to you and you looked kind of shaken. Is everything okay?" she replied innocently. Good God, this was getting worse and worse. Aizawa gave her a glare.
"It's none of your concern." he said coldly, trying to implement the rules he had just set for himself. Shinsou looked like she was taken aback a little and then she just shrugged and gave him a smile.
"Okay." she replied and continued in her way. That smile literally broke Aizawa's heart. It wasn't easily noticeable, but it was absolutely a fake smile. He kept telling himself that all of this was for the best. He really wanted to keep his job and he didn't want to force Shinsou to transfer courses either.
He had no idea how he was supposed to work with her, if she decided to transfer from the Hosu department to the nationwide department. He tried to remember how he was treating the rest of his students, but somehow it didn't seem to translate in any way to Shinsou. She was smart, dedicated and... really fucking hot.
There. He said it. He thought his student was hot. And really, there was nothing wrong about it. She was 22, there were really only 8 years between them. The only thing that was a problem was U.A.'s policy on that. And that's why he had to cut the bullshit and stop being obvious about it.
Aizawa took a deep breath and took another sip from his coffee. With the shock of his new realization he had completely forgotten that it had become cold and disgusting. He grimaced, as he remembered. Only thirty minutes left until his Criminal Psychology class. With Kaori Shinsou in it. Fuck.
He was so used to talking to her about her assignments after class or to have a small chat in the classroom just before the course started. He was used to watching her write down immaculate notes, her sticking her pencil into her hair and forgetting about it for ages, her sitting up more and more when he wasn't calling on her on purpose. This whole thing would be harder than he thought.
With a sigh he got up to get rid of his coffee and hole himself up in the staff room. He didn't really want to talk to anyone right now, not after he had had this weird epiphany. His mind flashed the image of Shinsou's sad eyes at him reacting so coldly before him. He pinched the bridge of his nose. Fuck, this really would be hard.

25 - Hitoshi Shinsou
Kaori Shinsou has always been fascinated by people’s minds. She is one of the best students in her Criminal Psychology course at U.A. and - being the lucky girl she is - her professor is not only one handsome dude, but is also working on the case of the serial killer Stain - a case that has been going on for years. As she is about to become Professor Aizawa’s TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country…
Day's dawning, skin's crawling
(Placebo - Pure Morning)
It was quarter to seven in the morning when they got home. Hitoshi realized that his sister - again - looked like she had been dragged through hell and back. But she didn't seem all too tired anymore. She had about 4 hours (5 if she was cutting it close and she never did) before she had to get ready to leave for class again.
"So. You wanna sleep and then go to class? Or you wanna pull an allnighter, see the kittens and then head to school with me?" Hitoshi asked his sister. She looked at him out of her almost ghostly pale face.
"How much sleep will I get if I go at the last minute?" she asked.
"Between 4 and a half hours and 5 at most. That is, if you go to bed right now and get up with 5 minutes to spare." he answered.
"Shit."
"I suppose I'll put on some coffee, then?" Hitoshi replied, an embarrassed grin on his face. He felt a little guilty for keeping her up so late and now taking even more time away from her that she could spend sleeping, but... well, he didn't feel bad enough not to suggest it. She was used to not sleeping days on end, just like he was. This was the fate of being an absolute insomniac.
"Yeah, put on the coffee, I'm gonna need a shower in the meantime." she said and walked straight into the bathroom, locking the door behind her.
"Hey, don't collapse and hit your head or something." Hitoshi called out after her, hoping she'd hear it.
He took off his shoes and made his way into the kitchen. Their family had one of those old-fashioned coffee machines, but they only ever used it at the beginning of a late-night study session or whenever a lot of people were over. With a sigh, Hitoshi grabbed the smaller french press beside it and started washing it out sloppily. They used it every single day, anyway.
He started boiling up some water and put three teaspoons of ground coffee into the french press. Now he could only wait for the water to finish boiling. And he could think about how dumb he had been with Kaminari. Hitoshi honestly didn't know what it was about Kaminari that he liked so much.
Maybe it was his unwavering optimism, the way he was so energetic at all times (even though he probably was at least half as tired as Hitoshi), the way he always had this slightly mischievous smile on his lips or just how he sometimes tilted his head when he didn't get something.
Maybe it was just some sort of Florence Nightingale effect, where he felt like he had to somehow help out that poor guy, because Kaminari genuinely seemed to struggle with life. Whatever it was, Hitoshi had lost all common sense when it came to him and he hated it. He hated it with a passion. But he still hoped he hadn't ruined his chances of at least being friends with Kaminari.
Plus, his group of friends just seemed so cool. Hitoshi felt that maybe, if he played his cards right, he might be able to actually, finally fit in with someone that was not his sister. He wasn't very optimistic about that, however. His whole family had issues when it came to social situations.
Hitoshi genuinely believed that his parents only got married, because they both were the type to study late into the night and thus had similar sleep schedules and just hung around each other all the time. And then they ended up working in the same hospital, able to easily coordinate their schedules. Of course, they loved each other. Or whatever you might call this sort of fondness you develop for someone who just has been through many of the same stressful situations as you. But after all, if it hadn't been practical for them, Hitoshi didn't think they would have married.
Kaori had had her difficulties with making friends, too. She was lucky to have found someone like Hana Uehara who just kept hanging out with her, no matter what annoying phase Kaori was going through at the moment. And his sister could be moody, especially when she had been in high school. But somehow they had managed to stick together and had accumulated a bunch of friends in university.
Maybe now it was Hitoshi's time to finally get some friends. He hadn't been the most agreeable person during daytime, mostly because of his messed up sleep schedule. Insomnia really wasn't ideal for making friends. But he had tried and he had had some short-lived friendships that usually were really intense and went out with a bang after a few months.
He did that a couple of times, before quitting the idea of him going out and making friends and instead hoping for someone to just adopt him into their friend group and put up with him. This was partly due to him getting a sort of reputation about being weird, a slacker (he just sometimes fell asleep in class, big deal) and a nerd (there wasn't a whole lot to do when you're awake and unable to sleep pretty much every single night). He had been getting along fine with some superficial acquaintances for the time being, but it did weigh on his mind that he was only really close to his sister.
He heard the kettle turn itself off, as the water was boiling now. He quickly took it and poured the water over the coffee grounds and then leaned back to let it sit for a while. The smell of coffee started to fill the air around him, as he closed his eyes. God, it was intoxicating. Every time Hitoshi smelt coffee around him, it just sort of grounded him in reality and made things infinitely better.
He turned his attention back to the french press in front of him and slowly, slowly pushed down the plunger, careful not to make any sudden movements with it and mess up the whole thing. Both Hitoshi and Kaori were pretty high-strung on any given day, so slowly pressing down the plunger of the french press was like an exercise in patience for them. Hitoshi shuddered when he remembered the first few attempts at making coffee, when they didn't have the right feel for it yet.
He heard the shower turn off in the bathroom and smiled to himself. Perfect timing on that. He got two mugs out of the cupboard and carefully filled them with coffee. For him pouring coffee felt like a carefully planned and studied ritual, whereas Kaori always seemed very angry when she was pouring herself a cup of coffee. If Hitoshi was in a bad mood, her way of pouring coffee would actually upset him.
It wasn't long until Kaori made her way out of the bathroom in her pyjamas. She stopped on the way to her room to take a sip of coffee - all of that without saying a word to Hitoshi - closed her eyes and then nodded with a satisfied smile. She put the cup back on the countertop and walked to her room, probably to get changed into her clothes for the day. Now that Kaori had started her coffee, he could start sipping on it as well. The sun was just coming out now, illuminating the clouds in the sky with a radiant, pink glow. Hitoshi took his cup with him when he walked over to the window in the kitchen.
A couple of minutes later Kaori came back out of her room, school bag slung over her shoulder and dressed in a summery dress and a sweater over it. She dropped her bag next to the table and got her cup, carrying it over to the table and sitting down. She had put her hair up in a messy bun which meant it would probably take ages for it to dry. Kaori always complained about that, but she still never stopped putting her hair in a bun while it was still wet.
"So. What courses you got today?" she asked after taking another sip from her coffee. Hitoshi turned back to her.
"Two hours of psychology in the morning, then the P.E. elective and Forensics." he replied. Hitoshi had no idea how he managed to get into Forensics. It wasn't bad, quite interesting, but he knew it wouldn't count for much, unless he managed to somehow get into Criminology.
"Sounds stressful. You heard anything from Aizawa yet?" Kaori wanted to know. Hitoshi sighed.
"Actually, I have. He sent me an email the other day, asking about me joining Criminology." he replied. Kaori gave him a surprised look and then smiled widely. She set down her cup of coffee.
"Really? Toshi, that's great! I can't believe you didn't tell me that earlier!" she said. Hitoshi shrugged.
"I dunno, I wanted to know for sure before I told anyone. And it's still not sure, so don't go around telling people, alright?"
"Of course not. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it, though. Aizawa doesn't go out of his way like that for just anyone. If he's approaching you about it, he'll probably do anything he possibly can to get you in." she assured him. Hitoshi nodded, a pensive look on his face. He knew he wanted to do this, he'd known it since Kaori had started university. But now that it was actually a tangible thing, it seemed pretty scary to him all of a sudden. As if it was easier to think about it when it wasn't a concrete plan.
"I hope you'll be off work for a little while now. You did so much overtime lately, it wouldn't be fair if they asked you to come in for even more work." Hitoshi said. Kaori just shrugged and sipped her coffee.
"I mean, Hosu is kind of short on police officers, with so many of them injured at the moment. But they said I should take some time off, so who knows what's gonna happen. I still have to write a ton of reports for them, since I was involved in like a million incidents during the last week only." she explained.
"I can't believe they make you work like that when you're just an intern." Hitoshi mumbled. Kaori laughed.
"I'm not giving them a choice. Honestly, the work is fun. I'm the one asking for extra shifts and all. I think they're not even supposed to let an intern work on high-profile cases, but I just seem to stumble into them all the time." Kaori said with a shrug. Hitoshi was shaking his head.
"So you mean they wouldn't even be able to get through with making you work as usual again?" he wanted to know. Kaori shrugged.
"Basically. I think that's what it is, at least." she replied and glanced at the clock hanging on the wall.
"Fuck, I can't believe we have to head to university so soon again. I gotta find a way to sleep during the breaks or something. The library lady keeps kicking me out if she finds me sleeping in some corner." Kaori mumbled and kept sipping her coffee with a dark frown on her face.

Kaori Shinsou was really fucking annoyed. All she wanted was to go home, see the kittens and go to bed to get some fucking sleep. But her brother Hitoshi seemed to have other plans. And she couldn't be mad, because he had come to the hospital and waited for her and he was her brother.
That's what Hitoshi said at least. Kaori was still somewhat mad at him. Why the hell did he need a fucking fancy coffee now of all times? Kaori could think of the reason, but still. Was he really that thirsty? Somehow she had thought her brother was better than that. But maybe, she was the last person that could talk about being thirsty. After all, she was shamelessly thirsting after her professor.
"My God, Toshi, do we really have to go? I'm just so fucking tired, I need some damn sleep, so I can head to my Criminal Psychology lecture in the afternoon and just be done with this day. Come on, dude, the one week where I can actually sleep during the day and you drag me along to get coffee?" Kaori nagged him, as they were getting closer to their favourite coffee shop.
It was super close to their home (thankfully!) and it was also the place this blond guy worked at. Denki Kaminari. Honestly, Kaori had no idea what Hitoshi saw in him, but her little brother had been smitten for years and even more so since he had realised that Kaminari was going to U.A. as well.
"Come on, it's his shift right now and it's really quiet, so maybe I'll get a chance to talk to him or something. Plus, I'm extremely tired and need this coffee." Hitoshi said, rubbing his neck nervously.
"Sure. Let's go visit your boy-toy, so." Kaori mumbled. The next thing she knew she got a smack up her head. She kind of expected it, but still wasn't really prepared for it. It kinda hurt.
"He's not my boy-toy!" Hitoshi protested. Kaori rubbed her head, her face still twisted theatrically in pain.
"Ouch, I just got out of the hospital and you hit me up the head? Fuck, Toshi, you're such an ass sometimes." Kaori complained, glancing up to see whether Hitoshi would actually try and act remorseful. He just rolled his eyes and shrugged.
"Stop being melodramatic, you bruised your shoulder, not your head." he replied in an indifferent voice.
"Asshat."
"You know you love me."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever."
Kaori couldn't be genuinely mad at Hitoshi for something dumb and small like this. Unfortunately he knew that and took advantage of it, whenever he saw fit. Even her annoyance at having to go out for coffee with him slowly faded. Maybe she had gone past the point of being ready to pass out and now wouldn't be tired for another five hours. This always happened to her.
"Sorry about dragging you along, but I really, really need this coffee right now. Plus, mum and dad are home at the moment and I don't wanna wake them accidentally and have to explain why we're both awake and all that." Hitoshi suddenly said, as he opened the door to the coffee shop.
"It's fine, Toshi, I think I'm getting over it. Slowly. I also really don't wanna explain the night shift to mum and dad. They'll end up telling me to go back to one of the prisons and while Tartarus was fun, I'm pretty happy where I am now." Kaori told him and walked into the coffee shop.
Hitoshi followed her. The coffee shop wasn't very well lit at this time of the morning. After all it was around 5 am and while the first few people were coming in to get their morning coffee, they wouldn't be lingering, as they usually had places to be. So only the counter was really well-lit.
There was no one at the counter, however. Kaori looked around and noticed a group of people sitting around one of the tables in the dark. They were illuminated by one single candle that was on the table. They looked somewhat familiar, two of them were wearing U.A. sweaters.
"Just chill and make small talk. You know, like you usually do. Plus, you can always play it off as meeting up to study." a girl's voice said. She had pastel pink hair that was short and curly. She was wearing a thick U.A. sweater over some mom jeans. Kaori felt like she had seen her at the Rescue Training Facility.
"But we're not even going to the library, like how am I going to play that off?" a red-haired guy said. He looked like he was having the worst crisis of his life at this moment. Kaori almost felt like they were intruding, but she had started to smell the sweet smell of coffee and there was no turning back now.
"Hang on, guys, I'm gonna have to go." someone (Kaori soon identified him as Kaminari) said to the group. He got up from his chair and stepped into the light with a big smile on his face.
"Oh, hey, it's you." he said when he saw Hitoshi and smiled a little wider. It was so obvious that he had taken some sort of liking to Hitoshi. It was the sweetest thing how clueless Hitoshi was about all of it, too.
"Hi." he replied, pretty dumbstruck. Kaminari walked behind the counter and gave Kaori a nervous look.
"Kinda early for a date, huh? What can I get you?" he wanted to know. Kaori burst out laughing.
"Sorry, but we're not dating. We're siblings. I'm... I'm his sister. It's getting kind of concerning how many people think we're dating." Kaori mumbled. She saw Kaminari's face light up at that.
"Oh! Oh, shit, I'm sorry, haha. It's just that I never see this guy with anyone else and only sometimes with you, so... you know." he replied. Kaori looked at Hitoshi with a big grin on her face.
"Toshi, you really have to make some friends! Look at this. People think we're dating." she teased him and immediately felt bad when she realized that he had gone into panic mode. It was really difficult to see it, but when Hitoshi went into his panic mode he'd avoid looking at people and get a little fidgety. He still looked quite calm on the outside, but he was a fucking mess on the inside.
"I don't need friends." he replied quietly without looking at anyone. Kaminari tilted his head a little.
"Hey, dude, you've been coming to this place since I started working here. We're practically friends. I mean, I can be your friend if you want. I'm Denki Kaminari." he said. It took everything for Kaori not to gasp out loud at how sweet this was. All she knew about Kaminari so far was that he could be really fucking dumb, but he seemed like a really sweet person, too.
"Well, I'm not here to make friends, I'm here for coffee. Can I get the usual?... please?" Hitoshi replied. Kaori raised an eyebrow. Looking at him she knew exactly that he just got stressed and snapped. She could practically see him think about how much he just fucked up.
"Uh, sure, sorry. What about you, sister?" Kaminari asked. Hitoshi mumbled something about finding a seat and got out of there quickly.
"I'll have the same, thanks. Sorry, dude, he just gets nervous sometimes. He always says he doesn't need friends, but he really does. Why do you think he keeps coming back here?" Kaori told him and gave him a quick wink. Sometimes Hitoshi just sabotaged himself with his stubbornness.
"I see. I'll just keep on trying then, I guess. Go and sit down, I'll bring the coffee over in a sec." Kaminari replied, his smile returning to his face.
"Thanks, dude."
Kaori quickly walked over to the table Hitoshi was sitting at. He had his head buried in his hands, probably wishing he had never insisted on coming to the coffee shop in the first place.
"Hey, Toshi. Chill. I told him you get nervous. You haven't lost your chance yet." she said to him quietly. Hitoshi opened his eyes and looked at her through his fingers. He then slowly let his hands sink down his face.
"Really?" he wanted to know.
"Yes, really. Look, he's just making our coffee now and he's smiling. But you gotta chill with the attitude, Toshi." Kaori replied to him. Hitoshi sighed and sat up, when one of Kaminari's friends shouted something at him.
"Yo, Denki, there is something going on at the observatory soon. You wanna come?" the girl with the pink hair asked.
"The observatory? That's space stuff, right? I love space! My favourite planet is the sun!" Kaminari shouted gleefully. Kaori blinked, not sure if she heard that right. Hi favourite planet was the sun?
"Uhm... Denki... the sun is not a planet." the red-haired guy replied. Kaminari laughed confidently.
"Come on, dude, what else is the sun? Of course it's a planet!"
"Denki, the sun is a star." a guy with shoulder-length black hair told him. Kaminari looked genuinely confused.
"What? I never knew the sun was a star, that's crazy!"
Kaori pressed her lips tightly together and looked at Hitoshi with a face that said 'Really? Really, Toshi? This guy?' Hitoshi just sighed and covered his eyes with his hands again, looking through his fingers.
"I knoooowww." he said quietly. Kaori burst out laughing. God, this was just too good. If their parents ever met Kaminari they would be shell-shocked. First of all, they didn't even know that Hitoshi was wildly bisexual and secondly, they would be shocked that he would be dating someone who... well... wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. They both were doctors, after all.
"It's okay, Toshi, he's a sweet guy and that's what matters."

23 - Aizawa
Kaori Shinsou has always been fascinated by people’s minds. She is one of the best students in her Criminal Psychology course at U.A. and - being the lucky girl she is - her professor is not only one handsome dude, but is also working on the case of the serial killer Stain - a case that has been going on for years. As she is about to become Professor Aizawa’s TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country…
All these small things they gather round me
(Ben Howard - Small Things)
Shouta Aizawa had no idea why he was staying in the hospital waiting for her to wake up. He could have gone home and caught up on sleep. He could have gone and finished his report for Tsukauchi. Hell, he could have done anything, but he decided to stay in the hospital watching Kaori Shinsou, as she was lying still in a hospital bed, flinching and moving slightly at times.
She wasn't knocked out cold, it was more that she had completely passed out from exhaustion and shock and in general a combination of things. The nurses had said her shoulder was badly bruised, but apart from that she was fine - just exhausted. They had put her on a drip and wheeled her into a small room where she could get the sleep she had been missing out on.
He had been sitting here while having a talk with Tsukauchi, giving him a short rundown of his version on how the evening went. They definitely had to do something about the students being involved in this whole thing. They didn't have any sort of license yet, so this whole affair could easily have really bad consequences for them. And no one wanted that. From what Aizawa heard they were currently working something out with Kenji Tsuragamae, the Hosu chief of police.
Aizawa looked back at Shinsou, lying there, her face pale, dark, dark circles under her eyes, stumbling towards him. He had just about caught her before she hit the ground. Her insomnia seemed to be really bad. The only times she seemed to get some form of sleep lately was when she was getting knocked out by some serious criminals. Or when she was sleeping in Ishiyama's class.
Maybe he should let her get more detention, just so he could tell her to get some sleep. Then again that plan might backfire, since he wasn't always in charge of the detention class. They rotated the professors on that one. Someone else might make her do actual work and Aizawa wanted to avoid that. Shinsou was going to work herself to death some day if no one stopped her.
At least for now she was asleep. She had woken up shortly after she collapsed, but had quickly gone back to sleep, so thankfully no one was too worried about her. She looked quite peaceful the way she was right now, breathing calmly and steadily, her braid all messy and her face regaining some colour.
Just as Aizawa's mind drifted off into the dangerous territory of thinking just how beautiful Kaori Shinsou was, her eyelids fluttered open. She looked at the ceiling with a frown, her eyes showing obvious confusion, before she groaned quietly and slowly sat up. She yawned and then looked around the room until her dark eyes rested on Aizawa. She smiled, but there was a hint of nervousness in her smile.
"Morning, Shinsou." he said.
"Hi, prof." she answered and sat up fully, stretching her arms and looking down on herself. She was still in her uniform, since no one had really bothered to get her changed into something more comfortable.
"What happened? Why am I in the hospital again?" she wanted to know, after she had looked around the room a little longer.
"Nothing bad. You just collapsed. Passed out due to exhaustion. You got a good few hours of sleep." Aizawa explained. Her eyes looked sleepy again, as she was massaging her shoulders, quickly stopping when she got to her left shoulder, twisting her face in pain and hissing under her breath.
"Your shoulder got bruised up pretty bad. Nothing's broken, though. It should be fine again in a couple of days. You better take a break from work for a while, though. You really have to take a break." he said.
"Right. I suppose, now that Stain's caught, there is time for a break. He... he is caught, right? I think I remember him collapsing?" Shinsou replied. Aizawa nodded quickly. Thankfully, the whole Stain case more or less sorted itself out.
"We got him. He's currently being treated at the hospital. He collapsed because one of his ribs broke and was piercing his lung, but he is out of immediate danger at the moment. They might be able to get him to Tartarus in about a week or two."
"Thank God. Those kids would've been in some real trouble if he had died, wouldn't they?" Shinsou asked.
"They're still in a whole lot of trouble. Tsukauchi is negotiating with Tsuragamae at the moment."
"Ah, shit, Tsuragamae can be really scary if he wants to be. They'll be alright, though, won't they? I mean, if they hadn't acted we'd have a whole lot more people dead and Stain would have escaped again."
"Yeah, I think that's the reason Tsukauchi is trying to use to convince the chief. We'll see how it turns out. How are you feeling?" Aizawa asked. He didn't really want to think about those kids anymore. It had almost given him a headache earlier and he was glad the pressure on his temples had subsided. He wasn't going to risk it coming back by starting to worry about those damn kids again.
"I'm still pretty tired, but I feel way better than earlier. I think I was kind of under shock, everything just seemed really far away and there was so much noise and shouting, I just glitched out or something." Shinsou replied, stretching her legs now. She swung them over the side of the bed when she was done.
"Say, Mr. Aizawa, can I just leave the hospital or do they wanna keep me here for something?" she wanted to know.
"I think you'll be fine to leave. They just checked your shoulder and then dumped you in a hospital bed, so you could get some sleep. You should be fine to leave whenever, but make sure you check in with Tsukauchi first. He wants to get your eye witness account before you leave." Aizawa said. Shinsou nodded slowly and then suddenly looked at him, a little smile tugging on her lips.
"Professor, did you wait here for me to wake up?" she wanted to know. Aizawa felt a little panic rising up in his chest, as he looked at her. He felt like a deer caught in headlights. What was he supposed to say?
"Seemed like the right thing to do." he answered. Shinsou gave him a long look and then smiled.
"I'm glad you did. Would have sucked to wake up and be on my own, no idea what's going on." she said, as she hopped out of the bed.
"Where are you planning to go?" Aizawa asked, raising an eyebrow. Shinsou yawned and stretched again, walking a few steps, as if she was testing out how well her legs were working.
"Guess, we gotta go and find Tsukauchi, so I can give him my version of what happened and then I should probably head home, before someone gets worried." she replied, checking her pockets for her keys and her phone.
"Sounds like a plan. Come on, let's go and look for him." Aizawa said and got up from his chair. He followed Shinsou out of the room and along the hallway. It seemed like this floor was almost completely empty.
A lot of the nurses had actually been busy as hell with Stain. Aizawa had heard the whole operation was difficult and he actually had been on the brink of death several times, before they managed to get him in a stable condition. Right now, everyone was probably busy with Midoriya, Todoroki and Iida.
"Oh my God, Kao-chan!" someone suddenly exclaimed. The aisle was pretty dark, so it was difficult to make out who it was. Shinsou seemed to be familiar with them, however. She squinted into the dark.
"Toshi?" she asked.
"What the hell? I was worried about you! Why do you always go and do dangerous shit like that, Kao-chan?" the boy asked. When he got closer to hug Shinsou tightly, Aizawa saw that it was her little brother.
"Comes with the job, Toshi." she told him with a tired smile.
"You could have died! I saw how you just ran at that massive dude, it was on TV and everything. My God, Kao-chan, what were you thinking?" Hitoshi Shinsou asked over and over again.
"I'm fine, Toshi, really. My shoulder hurts a little, but that's all. Mr. Aizawa and I were just about to go and report to Tsukauchi and then I was going to head home. I literally barely got injured." Kaori answered.
"Then why are you in a hospital, huh?"
"She's alright, Shinsou. No need to worry about your sister. She's in the hospital because she collapsed from exhaustion, so they figured it would be best if they let her sleep in here for a while. So when you two get home, make sure she tries to get some more sleep, alright?" Aizawa chimed in. It was nice that Hitoshi Shinsou cared so much about his older sister, but Aizawa was getting tired himself and was kind of glad that Kaori had finally woken up, because it meant he would be able to get another few hours of sleep before he had to head into university for his lectures.
"Uh... sure, Mr. Aizawa. Thanks. It's just... this is the third or fourth time within a month she gets into trouble like this." Hitoshi said.
"Well, it won't be the last time. She's right when she says it comes with the job. Plus, it seems like Tsukauchi has taken a liking to her, so he might want to get her to intern in the national police agency." he replied. Kaori Shinsou let go of her brother and looked at Aizawa with big eyes.
"Really? Did... did he say that?" she asked, excitement literally dripping from her eyes. She looked way too happy about that.
"He didn't say anything, he just... had a look on his face. Anyway, how about we go and talk to him and then I can bring the two of you home. Sound good?" Aizawa suggested. Kaori nodded enthusiastically.
"Sure. I'll wait here. Oh, and Kao-chan? I got them yesterday evening, two of them. You gotta see them when we get home, they're the sweetest little things." Hitoshi said to his sister and winked. Kaori gasped.
"Oh my God, really? I can't wait! See you in a bit!" she answered as she tried to keep up with Aizawa who had started to walk ahead. She had a big grin on her face when she turned back.
"What's waiting for you at home?" Aizawa wanted to know.
"Oh, Toshi has been looking to adopt some kittens for a while now and he finally found some and got the okay from our parents, so I'm assuming he got two little kittens. I can't wait to see them... say, are you a cat person, Mr. Aizawa?" she replied. Aizawa felt a pang in his heart. He loved cats. He loved cats so, so much. It took all of his willpower not to ask if Kaori had pictures of their new kittens.
"I like cats." was all he answered.

22 - Shinsou
Kaori Shinsou has always been fascinated by people’s minds. She is one of the best students in her Criminal Psychology course at U.A. and - being the lucky girl she is - her professor is not only one handsome dude, but is also working on the case of the serial killer Stain - a case that has been going on for years. As she is about to become Professor Aizawa’s TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country…
TW: blood, violence
Oh, I'm getting used to walking on a thin line
(honey honey - Thin Line)
Kaori Shinsou was at a loss when she saw the scene that Aizawa and her stumbled upon. It looked almost peaceful, the way a police officer was tending to the wounds of one young guy with curly hair. The way two other young men were just standing there, one of them with a rope in his hand, the other holding his arm.
Kaori remembered the three of them from Professor Aizawa's class. Well, it wasn't really his class, he was just the programme coordinator, which meant he was responsible for everything they did, but he didn't actually teach them.
"What is going on here?" Aizawa asked them. Kaori saw an assortment of knives on the ground. There was a person tied up with some old (and really dingy looking) rope. There was blood dripping from one of the students' arms. He was a tall guy with short, straight black hair. He was wearing glasses and looked incredibly embarrassed. Kaori couldn't really figure out why, though.
Next to him was Todoroki, that kid with the burn mark. Kaori knew him, because he was Enji Todoroki's son and Enji Todoroki was kind of a big deal (albeit a controversial big deal). He was holding the rope connected to someone in tattered clothes, a bandana around his head. It looked like he was unconscious.
"My God..." Kaori breathed when she realized who that was. The knives, the dark side alley, that one Hosu officer that everyone knew about because he kept stealing drugs from evidence bags...
"We got Stain..." the third student mumbled, his voice sounding tired and exhausted. It was the guy with the curly hair... his name was pretty unusual, too, Kaori tried to remember what it was again.
"What the hell do you think you're doing, Midoriya? I leave you alone for a few days only and you go and get yourselves in danger like that, without properly alerting any authorities. Do you all know what could have happened to you? Anything could have happened to you!" Aizawa suddenly started rambling, walking over to Midoriya first, giving him an angry glare and - once he saw that there was nothing he could do - moving on to the other two. There were very few times that Kaori had seen him this angry before. Aizawa usually couldn't be bothered to get angry.
"Where the fuck did you even get that rope?" he asked Todoroki and the other guy. Kaori walked over to him. She was curious to get a look at Stain. Plus, the third student's arm did look pretty bad.
"You can find anything at a trash collection site, Professor." was all Todoroki said with a shrug. Aizawa looked like he was about to smack him for that smartass comment. Kaori had to appreciate the ingenuity of the idea, however.
"Hey, is your arm okay?" she asked the other student. When he looked at her, he reminded her of someone, but she couldn't put her finger on it.
"No." he replied. It was really not the answer that Kaori had expected and it kind of threw off her groove at that point.
"Uh... can I have a look at it?" she wanted to know, once she had gotten over how blunt that answer was. Of course, his arm wasn't okay, but she didn't expect him to actually say it. She waited for him to take his hand away from the wound, while Aizawa was giving out to his students in the background.
It felt almost relaxing to Kaori to hear him rambling on like that, even though she wasn't really listening. It felt like a strangely grounding experience after this whole crazy night. That was, if that night was even over yet. Kaori sure hoped it was, because she had no idea how much more her sleep-deprived brain could process.
"Shit, that looks pretty bad..." Kaori mumbled, as she examined the students' arm. It was a really deep cut and judging from the little puddle of blood on the ground and from how pale he was, this student had lost a good bit of blood already. There wasn't much she could do right now, however. Except one thing. With a sigh she took off her new uniform jacket and started tying it tightly around the wound.
"Here, that should slow the bleeding a little. You look like you're not doing all too well anyway, so if you feel like you're gonna pass out, say something, or just sit down somewhere, alright? What's your name, dude?" she wanted to know. He gave her a thankful look.
"Tenya Iida. I remember you from the rescue exercise, but I don't think I recall your name..." he answered. Tenya Iida, huh? Looked like that whole family was set on ruining her uniform jackets.
"Kaori Shinsou. I'm actually interning with your brother." she said. His face lit up immediately at the mention of Tensei.
"Shinsou, when you're done there, go and check on Stain. Let's hope you didn't accidentally kill him, because if you did, then we'll be in a whole lot of trouble." Aizawa told her. Kaori bit her lip. Could it be...? Was that actually Stain? Serial killer Stain, that they had been hunting for years and years, now brought down by some first years at university? Kaori almost couldn't believe it.
"Of course, Sir." she replied and gave Iida a small apologetic smile. She turned around and knelt down beside the tied up man. The first thing she noticed was that his nose looked strange, almost like it had been broken a bunch of times. He had slim eyes and the structure of his face looked sharp and strict.
She reached out to his neck, trying to feel a pulse and after searching for a while she could actually feel it. She checked for breathing next. It was shallow, but it was there, which meant he definitely was alive and chances were that he would survive all this. He seemed to have some sort of head trauma, since he was still out cold and most likely some broken ribs. But that was all.
"He's alive, but most likely heavily wounded. Not much else I can see at this point, he'll need an ambulance." Kaori announced to all of them. She heard Aizawa sighing with relief. She didn't even want to imagine the kinds of trouble it would have caused for everyone involved, if he had been dead. Even with how things were right now the three students would be facing serious charges.
"Sorry. I was the police officer at the scene. I should have been able to do more, but I was only in the way." the guy in the Hosu police department uniform said. Midoriya shook his head.
"No, I don't think you could have done anything. This guy had a plan and he was strong. He was too well prepared." he said.
"Even the three of us against him, we barely managed to knock him out and only because he made mistakes. It would have been no problem for him to outsmart us if he had been expecting us." Todoroki agreed.
"Well, we should probably get him to the nearest police station..." the officer said.
"Hey, what are you doing here, huh?" Kaori heard a voice from the opposite side of the road. It belonged to an older officer, probably not far from retirement. He crossed the street with an angry look on his face.
"I thought I told you to stay on the train!" he added, pointing at Midoriya. Aizawa raised an eyebrow.
"Who's that?" he mumbled, glancing at Midoriya.
"It's the guy I'm interning with, Sorahiko Torino. But... why are you here?" Midoriya asked, looking utterly confused.
"I was told to come here all of a sudden. Not really sure what is going on, but I'm glad you're okay." he replied.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Torino."
"It's gotta be around here!" Kaori heard another voice, this time one she knew. She turned around looking at Hirota who came running towards them with two other officers. She was never this happy to see him in her entire life.
"Hirota! Fancy seeing you here." she shouted with a big grin on her face. He looked tired and a little beaten up, but mostly alright.
"Todoroki told us you guys might need help, but..." Hirota started, but was interrupted by another officer.
"Those injuries look serious, I'm gonna call an ambulance right away!" he said.
"Oh my God, is that..." the third officer said.
"Stain...?" Hirota breathed, looking down at the man who was tied up and unconscious on the ground.
"It is. Call for backup and get that ambulance." Aizawa told them, walking over to Kaori. Without a word he took off his jacket and put it over her shoulders. Kaori looked up at him in awe. How did he know? She had done her best to hide how cold she was getting without her jacket.
"Thank you, Sir..." she mumbled and pulled the jacket tighter around her body. It was nice and warm and smelt of coffee.
"This is a pattern that's becoming slightly concerning." Aizawa said to her in a low voice. When she looked at him, it almost looked like he was giving her a tiny smile, before moving on. Kaori felt as if she was about to melt right there and then. Aizawa had no idea what he did to her.
"You ruined your uniform jacket? Again?" Hirota asked. Kaori shrugged, not sure if she was grateful or not for being pulled out of her trance.
"Iida's little brother hurt himself." she said. Hirota laughed.
"That family's set on destroying your uniforms, huh?" he commented and got out a pack of cigarettes. He offered one to Kaori. She only smoked occasionally, but today it seemed quite appropriate. She took one of the cigarettes and waited for Hirota to light it for her. She took a deep drag and blew the smoke up into the night sky.
What a weird night. She'd never have thought she'd come face to face with Stain - an actual serial killer that was active while she was studying Criminology and Criminal Psychology. While she was interning at the police station. And now here he was, captured on her shift. She had been checking for his breathing. It was weird.
"Get down!" someone suddenly shouted. It was like an instinctive reaction for everyone to jump down and lay flat on the ground once they heard that. When Kaori looked up she saw that a huge, bulky guy was holding a gun to Midoriya's head, dragging him further away from the group.
"Midoriya!" someone else shouted. Kaori scrambled to get back up on her feet while taking another drag from her cigarette. Would she never get a damn break? Wasn't it bad enough she couldn't sleep at night?
"You are all such hypocrites, this whole society's fake!" an unfamiliar voice suddenly shouted. Kaori had no idea what was going on, everything just happened so fast. In the blink of an eye, there was Stain on top of the bulky guy, pushing a knife deep into his neck. The big guy seemed lifeless.
"You all need to be purged!" he shouted, his voice cracking. He pulled the knife out again and was moaning in pain.
"This is all... to create a more just society..." Stain said. His voice sounded deep and rough and was somehow not really what Kaori had been expecting. Midoriya was on the ground, frozen in fear.
"Is he helping the kid?"
"No, he's taking a hostage, dumbass. Get ready to fight!"
There was so much going on around Kaori, she couldn't really process it. She was just staring at Stain who was still hovering over that guy he had just killed. Someone else came running in, asking some questions. Kaori later learned that it was Enji Todoroki, but in this moment she was just frozen in place and everything felt as if it was happening far, far away. It was like she wasn't really there.
Only when Stain collapsed on the pavement, Kaori snapped back into reality, stumbling around to keep her balance and being caught by a pair of strong arms. And then everything went black, as she passed out.

Traumatized, ain't gonna hide how I feel
(grandson - Stigmata)
Shouta Aizawa was slightly concerned about the reckless driving of this Hirota guy. He was also too tired to really give a damn, so he just hoped he knew what he was doing and not kill both of them. He had no idea how Shinsou could put up with his driving. From what he heard they often did night shifts together.
He wondered whether those incidents that seemed to have sprung up all of a sudden were really related to Stain. It seemed unusual enough, but then again this was not his typical modus operandi. The whole dilemma was, however, that being so close to getting caught could have altered his modus operandi. It was a gamble, either way. There were way more patrol cars in Hosu City than usual and the district had gotten back up from other cities, as well.
"So, uh... you think Stain has anything to do with these reports?" Hirota suddenly asked. Aizawa glanced over at him. He had been appreciating the silence in the car so far, but apparently Hirota didn't enjoy it as much. He seemed nervous, almost on edge. What the hell had Shinsou told him?
"Not necessarily. He won't be involved in any of them. But since he's been nearly caught last time, he is probably trying to set these up as distractions. If I was to guess, I'd say he'd either set this up or is going to take advantage of it. I'd suspect him to carry out his murder somewhere close by. The whole point being that police will be nearby and on the streets, but since we will be busy with these other incidents, he'll have all the time in the world to kill in front of our eyes." Aizawa explained.
"Huh. Then why are we going there?" Hirota wanted to know.
"Because someone has to and chances are that he'll be close by, so we might get lucky and stumble upon him."
It was at that moment that Shouta Aizawa had an epiphany. And it wasn't good. This thought had always been at the back of his head, ever since he was looking over all that paperwork with his students' internships. But at the time he had been too distracted by Shinsou turning up for detention that he hadn't actually fully made the connection. And at this stage he could only hope he was wrong.
It had suddenly occurred to him that one of his students had chosen to do his internship in one of the smaller Hosu police stations. Which wasn't too odd in itself, if it hadn't been for that student getting much, much better offers. And if that student hadn't been Tenya Iida - Tensei Iida's younger brother.
"Holy shit..." he suddenly heard Hirota say, as he stopped the car. Aizawa looked out of the front window and saw what could only be described as a giant going randomly after citizens that were out on the streets.
This guy was probably well over 2 metres tall and was probably just as wide. He looked somewhat similar to that one massive guy that had been with the League and basically knocked him out completely. Aizawa gulped audibly and glanced over at Hirota to see whether he had heard him. Hirota seemed too busy staring at this guy in absolute fear, though.
"Time to get out, I suppose." Aizawa said and took a deep breath. Everything inside him - from his brain to his still aching bones - was telling him to leg it out of there. Just run and never come back.
But that wasn't really an option, especially since there seemed to be several fires not far away. Aizawa couldn't be 100% sure, but they were most likely related to whatever the hell was going on here. With a sigh he got out of the car. There were two more police teams currently at the scene and they seemed to be struggling. Why did he always get dragged into things like that when Tsukauchi was around?
"Hirota, go and evacuate any civilians, check if anyone needs medical treatment and get them as far away from here as you can, alright?" he said to the young police officer who seemed pretty much frozen up at this point.
He glanced at Aizawa quickly and nodded, running over to a couple that seemed to have been caught up in the middle of things. The big guy was about to grab one of the other officers on site and smash him into a burning car.
"Hey, dipshit, knock it off!" Aizawa shouted at him, firing a warning shot into the air. He hated having to use a gun, because there was so much that could go wrong, but sometimes it was just needed. For good measure. The big guy let go of the officer and turned around with a big grin on his face.
"The hell d'you want, doormat?" he replied and swung a fist at him, before even waiting for an answer. Aizawa quickly ducked his head below his fist and delivered a quick blow to his solar plexus. The problem being that it probably did little to no damage, since this guy was packed with muscle.
"Didn't hear the fucking warning shot, huh?" Aizawa mumbled with a frown. This wasn't good. He had somewhat banked on being able to buy some time, while big guy here was incapacitated from the pain.
"A quick one, huh?" the big guy said and turned around, before Aizawa could get the gun ready, hitting him hard in the shoulder and sending him flying to the ground. Thankfully that didn't hurt all too much, so he could get back up again fast enough. Why the hell did Tsukauchi always insist on bringing him to active crime scenes like this?
Aizawa dodged another swing from the big guy, when his face suddenly distorted with pain. To his left was Shinsou, lying on the ground and catching a breath, before getting up again. Looked like she had kicked him right in the nape of his neck, but landed in an unfortunate way.
This was no time to get distracted. Aizawa took aim and fired a bullet into his opponent's right shoulder, hoping it would make him give up. Even if he didn't, at least he wouldn't be able to use that arm anymore without considerable pain. Another reason why Aizawa hated having a gun on him in situations like this, was how difficult it was not to get in trouble himself for actually using it in self-defense. The legal situation was anything but stable and it was a pain having to worry about that on top of everything else.
"Shinsou, are you alright over there?" he shouted without taking his eyes off his opponent. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Tsukauchi move towards him, gun drawn and pointing at the big guy.
"Never been better!" Aizawa heard Shinsou call out.
"I don't know what you're trying to do here, big guy, but you better not move another inch. You're under arrest!" Tsukauchi shouted at their opponent. He looked at both of them with their guns drawn, clutching the wound in his shoulder. Maybe he would give up... But then he started grinning.
"Eat shit, pigs!" he screamed and started running at them. Shit, shit, shit. Aizawa had no idea for which of them he'd go. There was no way he'd get away with straight up killing him, so he aimed for his kneecaps, fired a shot, missed and jumped out of the way, before he could get hit by this maniac.
When he turned around he saw him writhing on the ground in pain. There was another person towering over him, hitting him right in the head. Aizawa could only guess that the guy passed out. He looked at the person that had stepped in and realized it was him. His eyes twitched a little.
"Tsukauchi, Aizawa. Looked like you needed a little help." he said.
"What are you doing here, Todoroki?" Aizawa asked, a subtle amount of contempt in his voice.
"I got an order to support the Hosu City department. This is not exactly your turf, either, is it, Aizawa?" Enji Todoroki replied with a smug grin on his face. Aizawa didn't like him. He didn't like a lot of people, but Enji Todoroki was way up on that list. This man was the kind of guy that gave the police a bad image.
"Naruhata isn't that far and I'm mainly working on the Stain case. I got orders from Kenji Tsuragamae, just like Tsukauchi." Aizawa said to him. Enji Todoroki gave him a long, hard look, but he didn't seem to care too much.
"Well, looks like the situation is under control. Here, at least. I hear, there are two more instances not too far away? I can get that done with the help of some officers. If some of you could head to a different location..." Todoroki said. Aizawa raised an eyebrow. A different location? What was that all about?
"What different location?" Tsukauchi asked. Shinsou was slowly walking up to them, while the rest of the officers on the scene were busying themselves restraining the big guy while he was still out cold.
"My son is interning with me and he said one of his classmates was in trouble and ran off to some street corner. He sent me this location..." Todoroki replied and showed them his phone. The location was a small side street, cul-de-sac, in a kind of quieter place... Aizawa glanced at Shinsou who seemed to be waiting for instructions on what to do next. Small side street? Sounded promising.
"I'll head there and see what's going on, if you can spare some officers later on, send them that way, too." Aizawa announced and quickly started walking off. He gave Shinsou a pat on her shoulder.
"Shinsou, you're with me. Hurry up, we don't have much time to lose." he said and kept walking on.
So he was right after all. All this ruckus - big massive guys being a nuisance for no apparent reason - was some sort of distraction after all. And those kids in the side street? They had stumbled upon the real deal. Chances were good that they had stumbled upon Stain. An actual serial killer.
And of course these kids had to be his responsibility. Shouto Todoroki was one of the first years he was responsible for. And Aizawa would have bet all he owned on some other kids from that class being involved as well. A classmate of his? It had to be Iida. There was no other way.
"Sir, where are we going?" Shinsou's voice asked next to him. Her breathing sounded ragged as she was trying to keep up with him.
"We're going to a dark side alley off the main roads." Aizawa answered, his voice sounding darker than he intended.
"You think it's Stain?" Shinsou wanted to know. Aizawa suppressed the urge to smile at her picking up on that so easily.
"It's likely."

20 - Shinsou
Kaori Shinsou has always been fascinated by people’s minds. She is one of the best students in her Criminal Psychology course at U.A. and - being the lucky girl she is - her professor is not only one handsome dude, but is also working on the case of the serial killer Stain - a case that has been going on for years. As she is about to become Professor Aizawa’s TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country…
With a whisper, I'm there, over your shoulder
(Dave Not Dave - Cold Blood)
Kaori Shinsou was sitting in the office, trying to pass the time. She had been hoping to be sent on patrol, but Iida - from his hospital bed - had ordered her to only get involved if she absolutely needed to. So now she was sitting in the office, opposite Hirota who was having a power nap, sipping on her coffee. The whole situation sucked ass. She had been restless since the beginning of the week.
But Stain was taking his sweet time, not killing anyone. And even if he did, chances were she wouldn't get called out. Hirota was pretty happy about this development. Since he was always partnered up with Kaori, it meant he got to stay in the office to do some random paperwork and didn't have to do overtime. Which in turn meant his girlfriend wouldn't be mad at him.
Kaori hated it. She kept monitoring all the requests from the dispatcher, ready to pick up anything that seemed interesting or exciting to her and get going at a moment's notice. But there was nothing. It was like the whole criminal underbelly of Hosu City had decided to take a break.
She took another sip from her coffee mug when she heard a knock at the door. It was a strange, unfamiliar knock - Kaori had been spending so much time in night shifts she knew everyone's knock, but this was a new one. Shit. Who the fuck could that be? And Hirota was fast asleep.
"Hey, Hirota." she said quietly. Another knock. Fuck. She needed to wake him up before whoever that was came in. She grabbed a pencil from her table and threw it at him. Hirota woke up startled and looked around him in confusion.
"Shinsou, what the fuck?" he said, as she gestured for him to be quiet. There was another, excessively loud knock at the door. Hirota seemed to understand the predicament and quickly made himself look busy.
"Come in!" Shinsou said, as the door opened with a creak just seconds later. Someone was eager to get inside.
"Night, Hirota, Shinsou." said a figure of moderate height in a trench coat. Tsukauchi. What the hell was Tsukauchi doing out here?
"Oh, Detective. We weren't really expecting an official visit, we'd have tidied the place a little otherwise." Kaori replied with a forced smile. Tsukauchi laughed and walked into the room. There was another figure behind him. Dark clothes, face buried in a thick scarf. Shouta Aizawa. Kaori's smile was about to turn into a genuine one.
"No need for that, we're just checking in. You know we've been expecting Stain to attempt another kill in Hosu soon, right? It's been awfully quiet, hasn't it?" Tsukauchi commented. Hirota nodded, leaning back in his chair.
"It has been. Well, I'm not complaining, our last run in with him was quite a lot of paperwork." he commented. Tsukauchi seemed to be smelling something. He took a deep breath and relaxed his shoulders.
"What's brewing in here? Smells amazing." he wanted to know. Kaori smiled and glanced back at the coffee machine.
"Colombian Arabica. The cheap one from the convenience store. It's really good, though." Kaori answered. She was the police station's specialist on anything coffee related. At first, it was kind of a patronising thing - hey, you're the new girl, right? Why don't you go and make some coffee, sweetheart?
But Kaori had been so annoyed by this attitude that she had made it her goal to make the best fucking coffee in the entire police force, so people would actually fucking appreciate her for something, at least.
"Really? I usually make a large bend around those, but it does smell great. Would you mind if I had a cup?" Tsukauchi asked.
"Not at all, Sir." Kaori said and got up to pour the detective a cup of her coffee. She saw Mr. Aizawa smiling into his scarf.
"I have the same coffee at home. Really earthy." he commented quietly.
"What brings the two of you here?" Hirota asked. Kaori took the chance to check her phone for new messages. She saw that Hitoshi had texted her some pictures, probably of the kittens he had gotten two days ago. Their parents had finally given them permission to go and get a new kitten and Hitoshi had been incredibly happy when he saw the one he wanted and could take her home.
"Just checking in around all the stations to see if there has been any suspicious activity lately." Tsukauchi said as Kaori handed him the cup of piping hot coffee. Tsukauchi held it up to his face, took a deep breath and smiled. Kaori could sympathize with him - that coffee smelt really aromatic.
"Well, the only unusual thing is how quiet it's been. I don't like it." Kaori replied. She was itching for something to do, but nothing was happening and it really bothered her. There was also a nagging feeling in the back of her head that something should be happening, but maybe that was just her mind getting nervous due to the insomnia.
"The calm before the storm?" Aizawa commented. Hirota almost choked on his coffee. Kaori was surprised that he could still drink that. He had been asleep for a good while and it was probably cold by now.
"It better not be, I was enjoying getting a bit of a break, if I'm honest." Hirota said and laughed nervously. Kaori knew that Aizawa was making him nervous, she could literally feel it in the way he shot him paranoid glances over the two desks. Why did everyone think Aizawa was such a scary guy? To Kaori he wasn't scary, he was just really, really tired. And she could relate to that.
"Hey, Shinsou, that potted plant looks like it's not gonna survive for much longer." Aizawa all of a sudden pointed out and nodded towards the small succulent on her desk. Kaori sighed and rubbed her temples.
"I know. I tried everything, but nothing helps. I'm afraid he'll die soon." she told him. He raised an eyebrow.
"He?"
"Yeah, Shinsou here gave that plant a name and all. She talks to it when she's frustrated." Hirota chimed in, an amused expression on his face. Kaori rolled her eyes. Hirota was always making fun of her for talking to her plants, but at the end of the day he was the more stressed out one.
"What's his name?" Tsukauchi wanted to know. Kaori gave him a surprised look, although thinking about it, he seemed like the type to name his plants, too. There was only a slight problem with telling him the name.
"Uh... his name is Haruto." Kaori answered, trying not to blush. The truth was that she had named the plant Shouta. After her professor, Aizawa Shouta, who was currently leaning against the wall of the office she shared with Hirota. There was no way she could tell Tsukauchi that.
Thankfully Hirota was on board with that one and only glanced at her with a slightly raised eyebrow, instead of protesting. She wouldn't have put it beyond him. Hirota was the nicest guy, but sometimes he had his moments where he could be incredibly dense. Fortunately for her, this was not one of them.
"That's really sweet, I have one, too. My sister always makes fun of me for that." Tsukauchi replied with an innocent laugh.
"Anyway, back to the topic, there's nothing weird going on and there hasn't really been anything all week so far, so..." Hirota said, obviously trying to get them out of the office so he could resume his nap. While he was talking Kaori saw something blinking on her monitor. A dispatch had popped up. There was movement from the office next door. Someone else had already gotten it.
Just when she was about to lean back, there was another one popping up, not too far from the first one. Without even thinking, she got that one. She was sick of sitting around in the office and doing nothing.
"Hirota, we're moving out, they need a patrol close to the train station. Looks like a massive brawl, possibly a hostage situation... shit, it looks pretty weird... and there is another one coming in... we better get ready and get going." Kaori interrupted their talking. She grabbed her phone and her keys from her desk and took her brand new uniform jacket that was hanging over her chair.
"Ah, shit, there goes my quiet night shift." Hirota mumbled and grabbed a few of his things. Tsukauchi and Aizawa exchanged a glance.
"I'm going with Shinsou and Aizawa's going with Hirota. All of those popping up at the same time is really weird. Any of you have gun licenses?" Tsukauchi asked, as the four of them moved out of the office to get some equipment. Kaori got a taser and a bulletproof vest which she quickly put on on the way to the car.
"I was going to get mine next term." she replied.
"I don't have one, I'm still waiting on getting accepted into the programme." Hirota told them. Tsukauchi nodded.
"Good, Aizawa and I are licensed to carry guns, so we have one gun per team. Let's go." Tsukauchi said.
"You left it this late to get your license? Have you done any training in marksmanship?" Aizawa asked Kaori under his breath. Kaori sighed. She knew she should have signed up for training in marksmanship much earlier than this and she knew it was incredibly difficult to get the license with just one term of training. But holding an actual gun had always made her feel a little scared. It felt like too much power.
"I know, I know. I just... never got around to it." she answered quietly. Aizawa shook his head.
"You can't go around chasing serial killers without a gun license. And getting it with just one term of training is extremely difficult. From next week on we'll be doing something about that." he replied in a strict tone. It was weird, but Aizawa using his teacher voice just did something to her.
"Of course, Sir." she said. There was something in his eyes that moment that made her wonder whether he actually genuinely cared for her. More than a professor cared for any student.

19 - Stain
Kaori Shinsou has always been fascinated by people’s minds. She is one of the best students in her Criminal Psychology course at U.A. and - being the lucky girl she is - her professor is not only one handsome dude, but is also working on the case of the serial killer Stain - a case that has been going on for years. As she is about to become Professor Aizawa’s TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country…
You don't know what's in my head
(MISSIO - I Don’t Give A)
It wasn't easy to take care of the wound in the dark storage building. He couldn't risk drawing attention to himself, though. That one police guy had gotten way too close. Things were getting risky. Maybe it was time to lay low for a while...
He knew he couldn't. He needed to kill. He needed to finish up with Hosu and he needed to do it quickly, before they managed to sort out all their bureaucracy and be on his ass. But not too quickly.
He couldn't risk it while this wound was still fresh. It had been a few days since he had left that police officer to bleed out. Since he had gotten hurt himself. It really was unfortunate he didn't get to finish the job back then. He would have bled out if it wasn't for those two other guys patrolling. Both quite young.
He huffed. What the hell were they even doing in a job like that? Probably grinding their way up to the top. Doing overtime to get that promotion. More cash and more authority. That's what it was all about. Disgusting. Fucking rotten. Like this whole society. There were very few exceptions.
He was in a good mind to get the girl as his next victim, just because it was her and her partner that forced him to do a sloppy and hurried job. He didn't like that. He was really fucking pissed about that.
But he was above that kind of killing. He was Stain. He didn't kill out of selfish motives. He killed for the greater good. Ridding the world of all those good-for-nothing hypocrites. All those people only after profit, money, power, fame. They all needed to go and then maybe... maybe things would get better. A better society. He was ready to play the bad guy to make that happen.
One day they would realize, he knew it. They'd realize he was right all along. They would understand his message and that's when things would turn around for the better. His next target had to be chosen well, however. Maybe it would be wise to plant a few distractions that night as well.
He looked down at the wound on his leg. It wasn't deep, but it burned when he was moving. He could ignore the pain, but it was terribly distracting if he had to fight or make a quick escape again. And the chances of that were high, especially with the police seemingly working quicker all of a sudden.
He grabbed the bottle of rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball. He soaked the cotton ball in alcohol and carefully dabbed it on the wound. It was looking much better than just a few days ago. Soon he'd be ready. One or two more days.
When he was done cleaning the wound he picked up the clean bandage beside him and started wrapping it neatly around his leg. One layer over the other, tight, clean, neat - like a true professional. Not that he was one, but he had tended to so many of his wounds, he was getting good at it.
It was time to pick out a new victim soon. And this time he had to go in for the kill. There was no way he could return to Hosu City a third time, if this didn't go according to plan. It had to work, there was no other way. Even though it would be risky. He needed to take his time and focus this time.
There were a few targets he had in mind - that health inspector that was regularly taking bribes to keep restaurants in business that were merely fronts, the police officer who liked to put some drugs from the evidence bags into his own pockets, the doctor not treating a dying patient, because their family couldn't pay for the operation... He'd take his pick from one of them.
Maybe the police officer, since he wanted to get back at them for making him do a sloppy job with this Iida guy. Attacking Iida at all was a bad move. It had been impulsive. He had realized that this guy was suspicious of him, so he decided to do away with him. It wasn't a good enough background. It was petty, nothing else. And that's why he had the wound. That's why he had to punish himself.
He couldn't give in and be selfish. That's what he was fighting against after all. That was his reason to kill. Tensei Iida had been a mistake and he was convinced that was why he had gotten so close to being caught that night.
He would make things right the next time. He would choose the right target, he would set distractions and kill silently. Efficiently, doing a precise job, only leaving the traces behind he wanted to leave behind. And then he would send off his letters and move on. To the next place.
Maybe he'd head into Naruhata after that. He had a good mind to show that annoying profiler that he had nothing on him. That Stain wouldn't be caught that easily with some sort of mind trick. And he'd show him by killing someone right on his doorstep. He knew he could pull it off.
He was better than all of them. He wouldn't have been able to kill for that long otherwise. He wouldn't have been able to carry out his mission this thoroughly. And he kept telling them in his letters and the little messages he left at the scene. It was laughable that they hadn't caught him yet.
But he wouldn't get ahead of himself. Hosu City was first. Once he had finished that job, it was time to plan his next move. Things had to be in order and he couldn't break that order. Not when he had been so close to being apprehended. Something like that shouldn't be happening again.
He wrapped up his bandage and tied it together. He got up and grabbed his katana and his knife and daggers. He needed to clean and sharpen them. Prepare them for what lay ahead. It will happen tomorrow night.
He still had a good amount of the poison left. It was a simple paralyzing agent. He wouldn't use poison to kill - that was the coward's way out. It wouldn't mean anything. But he could use it to make things easier. He hadn't gotten to Iida soon enough, that's why he got in trouble last time.
He smiled as he slowly paced back and forth in the empty and cold storage house. Crisp, silver moonlight was shining through the hole in the roof. Looked like the clouds had slowly dissipated.
The plan was getting clearer. Only one more day and he would go in for the kill. And then he would be able to eat again. Then the fasting would be over. Whatever mistakes he made, they would finally be atoned for.
He started laughing. It was beautiful!
He laughed and laughed and laughed, until the laughter died down to a satisfied smile. It was time to kill again.

18 - Aizawa
Kaori Shinsou has always been fascinated by people’s minds. She is one of the best students in her Criminal Psychology course at U.A. and - being the lucky girl she is - her professor is not only one handsome dude, but is also working on the case of the serial killer Stain - a case that has been going on for years. As she is about to become Professor Aizawa’s TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country…
Hey, can you meet me tonight in detention?
(Melanie Martinez - Detention)
Shouta Aizawa had to stay late today for any students that had gotten detention. He hoped to God that there were none. These people should all be adults and should know how to behave themselves. Why they even had anything like a detention period was beyond Aizawa.
Maybe it was a planned thing to give teachers some free minutes once in a while where they could sit down in a quiet room and do their work without being disturbed by something all the time. Aizawa enjoyed watching over the students in detention because there were rarely any of them.
And today he had a lot of work to do, as it was. He had gotten his bandages taken off after the Sports Festival and now was the first day of school after and the first years were supposed to go on internships. There were a lot of things to sort through for that. And he still had Hitoshi Shinsou's file.
He was trying to figure out how he had managed to screw up the entrance exam so badly that he hadn't been able to get into Criminology. Of course, his scores for the physical assessment weren't great at all, but his entrance exam was almost immaculate. The whole system really wasn't fair for the more brainy people.
With a sigh Aizawa tried focussing on the list with his first-year students. Being a course coordinator sounded cool and fun until he tried it. Now he was stuck with the job and a new class every couple of years. He read over the names on the list and who had already decided on an internship... Uraraka, Iida, Todoroki, Bakugou... why did he have to sort out all this stuff for them?
His eyes wandered over to the other paper. Hitoshi Shinsou's file. He was doing exceptionally well. In his student ID photo he had the same tired eyes as Kaori Shinsou. It was very obvious that they were siblings. Looking over the file, Aizawa was aware of what Hitoshi was trying to do. He was trying to get into that course that combined Criminology with basic training.
He definitely had the brains, that much was clear. He'd have to exercise more, get more training. He did really well in the Sports Festival, though. Maybe he could offer... no. It wasn't his business, why should he be wasting time on it? He was busy enough as it was already.
He looked back at the list of his other students. The letters seemed to blur in front of his eyes. He just couldn't focus, no matter how hard he tried. And he knew when he got home there were more papers waiting for him, papers on Stain and papers on that arson the other night and he'd have to get them done and then collapse with exhaustion at some point between 2 am and 5 am.
That's when he heard a knock on the door. This wasn't true, was it? Who the hell was dumb enough to earn themselves detention? All the students were at least 18 years old, why would anyone do anything outrageous enough to earn themselves detention? Aizawa took a deep breath.
"Come in." he said. The door opened slowly and a familiar figure waltzed into the otherwise empty classroom. Messy bun of dark hair, tired eyes, lithe but feminine figure and a bunch of papers and notebooks in her arms.
"Shinsou? What the hell are you doing in detention?" Aizawa asked her. He really had expected better of her.
"Fell dead asleep in Ishiyama's class. I tried to explain, but he was having none of it." Shinsou said, sounding tired and exhausted and even a little ashamed about being in detention.
Thinking about it Ishiyama had been in a foul mood all day. Who knew why that was. Sometimes he just had... a certain moodiness about him. Of course Shinsou shouldn't be falling asleep in class, but... he could easily understand how tired she had to be. She basically collapsed the other day and Aizawa couldn't imagine that she had gotten much sleep since.
"Ishiyama, huh? How long did you get detention for?" Aizawa asked. Shinsou took a deep breath. All of this seemed to really be eating away at her. Aizawa couldn't remember seeing her in detention a single time, except that one time when she and a group of other students got blackout drunk on a class trip in her first year. Since then Shinsou had learnt not to get caught.
"The... the rest of the week, Sir." she said, lowering her head.
"Don't worry about it. I'll talk to Ishiyama first thing tomorrow morning. He probably isn't aware what stress you've been under lately. Just sit down for now and do some assignments or whatever you have to do." Aizawa told her.
"Thank you, Sir." she said and sat down in the first row. She sorted the loose papers she had in her arms into three piles and pushed them to the top of the desk. Then she took out her notebook from her bag and turned it on. Aizawa was watching her curiously - the way her thin, lithe fingers wandered over the keyboard, the way she reached out back and got a pencil that she had wedged into her bun earlier, the way she bit her lip while she was looking over some papers, tapping the pencil against her cheek.
Kaori Shinsou was just too much right now. He liked her, yes, but maybe he had just gone a little too far with that. He had been tormenting her about her assignments, even though they were immaculate - they could be improved if she did them in one go and left some time for editing, but they were still much better than anything he had seen from this class. He had been getting her and her brother through to the school building when all the reporters suddenly showed up. She looked so graceful and fragile with the way she moved through every little opening she could get without saying anything or showing much emotion towards the press.
He had seen the way her eyes shone with excitement when she had seen those files. It was like he could see her brain working quickly and efficiently. And the whole incident during the rescue training? When he realized she was going to go in and fight, he was in a good mind to expel her, but the way she had held her own back there...
Honestly, Aizawa couldn't remember a time when Kaori Shinsou hadn't been his favourite student. No matter how much he liked to say that he wasn't playing favourites and didn't like it if anyone else did, she was the golden exception to the rule. Shouta Aizawa was in too deep and he knew it.
"What are you working on there?" he asked her. She looked up at him, almost accidentally dropping a bunch of papers on the floor.
"I still have to finish my profile on that arson the other day and I have a report about the whole Stain incident to write. Hirota's already got his done and I have to hand in both by the end of the week, but I've just been so tired all this time, I didn't really get around to it." she answered.
"Fuck. I hate paperwork. How far did you get with the profile?" Aizawa wanted to know. Shinsou shrugged.
"I have that one mostly done, so I'll most likely manage to get that one done at least. The Stain one will be a whole different beast." she told him, as she sorted through the papers. Aizawa nodded.
"Mind to share what you got so far? A summary?" he said. He wanted to know what her profile for that arson would look like. She had noted a good few interesting points at the scene already.
"Sure. I'd reckon a male, probably between 20 and 30 years of age. Would strike people as a little odd, possibly some moderate to strong antisocial tendencies. He seems to be angry at some aspect of society, most likely the LEPSC. Possibly has family relations to members of the LEPSC. He has a very sadistic streak, since his victims died in the fire. He didn't kill them painlessly beforehand. He wanted them to suffer. He has probably been committing arson many times before, possibly from a very young age. He'd either be unemployed or in a job where he doesn't have to deal with people a lot. His targets weren't primarily the people he killed in the fire, but the one remaining relative. I believe that his motive was to intimidate him or make him feel the pain of losing his family." Shinsou quickly explained, as if she knew it by heart.
She probably did. The profile sounded on point. The points were all the same way Aizawa had picked them himself. Hearing her give him a rundown on a perpetrator profile like this was music to his ears.
"Very good. You quoted proper evidence from the autopsy reports, crime scene analyses and the witness reports?" Aizawa wanted to know. That had been her weakness at the very beginning.
"I did as much as I could. Eye witness reports weren't really much to go by in that instance, and it seems like we haven't been able to pin down that guy I took pictures of, which is a shame, because I just... I just know that it's him. I know." she answered, giving him a frustrated look.
"Don't put too much in that theory. Confirmation bias is still very much a thing, even for you. Although I agree that he does seem suspicious." Aizawa told her. He looked back down at his list. Ashido, Asui, Midoriya, Kaminari, Kirishima... no. There was no way he could focus on this right now.
"And what about the Stain case? I suppose I'll be getting that report in the end, since Tsukauchi wants me to finally handle all the Stain-related incidents. You think it was Stain who attacked Iida?" Shouta Aizawa wanted to know. He was too curious about it. He needed to know what her opinion on that was. He had been calling the shots in that case for years and they hadn't moved one bit ahead, he was craving a new perspective, a second opinion, just to be sure he wasn't going in the completely wrong direction.
Shinsou looked at him with a thin smile as if she knew. She probably did. Somewhere in that pretty head of hers she knew exactly that he wanted her opinion on that case. Not Fukukado's opinion, even though she was always happy to disagree with him. Not the opinion of anyone else in the course or even the entire police force. He wanted her perspective.
"Well, it would be easier, if I knew whether there had been any letters yet or not, but... from all the crime scene reports and from Iida's own report, he is definitely Stain. And we even had him sit down with someone and got a sketch. Plus, judging from his usual pattern, it is extremely likely he'll be attacking in Hosu City again, this time going for the kill. He doesn't usually skip town without killing someone." Shinsou said with a twinkle in her eyes and a sly smile on her lips.
No. Oh, hell no. Aizawa knew exactly what she was thinking and it was not happening. He wasn't sure how to stop her, but he knew he had to somehow. Or at least keep an eye out for her. She was bound to get her hands on Stain - probably by working every single night shift in the Hosu station until he struck again.
"Shinsou, no. You can't be serious. Please tell me you're taking the week off." he replied, shaking his head.
"Even if I wanted to stay out of it, they've increased patrols so much that they wouldn't let me take a week off. And I want to be there when they catch him. It's bound to happen, I just know it. The space between his murders has decreased drastically lately. He can't wait too long." Shinsou said. Aizawa pinched the bridge of his nose. She was right. All of that was true. Fuck.
"You know how dangerous that's going to be, right?"
"I assure you that I am completely aware of that. It comes with the job. And I wouldn't have chosen this profession, if I didn't want to take the risk."
Aizawa nodded. He knew he'd have to make a phone call to Tsukauchi soon and ask him to get permission to work with the Hosu City department for this case. Chances were he'd be called there anyway, but he couldn't just let Shinsou out of his eyes. It was way too dangerous.
"What I'm about to tell you needs to absolutely stay between us. It's highly confidential information, but it's important you know this." Aizawa started. Shinsou looked up from her papers, a questioning look in her eyes. Aizawa knew she wouldn't tell a single soul, but he had to make sure.
"There were letters. I'm going to write my report on them today. In my opinion they are authentic Stain letters and they were sent in response to the Hosu incident. So when you go out there, I want you to be extra careful when you go to your work study from now on, until we catch Stain."
Shinsou's eyes suddenly looked very serious as she looked at him when he told her. It was like the entire situation had gotten to a whole new level. Finally, she nodded.
"I understand."

17 - Hitoshi Shinsou
Kaori Shinsou has always been fascinated by people's minds. She is one of the best students in her Criminal Psychology course at U.A. and - being the lucky girl she is - her professor is not only one handsome dude, but is also working on the case of the serial killer Stain - a case that has been going on for years. As she is about to become Professor Aizawa's TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country... AU, OC x Aizawa
With rays that will cure me of the pain that keeps my lungs tight
Hitoshi Shinsou was understandably upset, as he got back to the changing rooms. Things hadn't gone as bad as they could have gone and the people from his course that were watching were actually cheering for him and people were commenting on how well he did, but he still wasn't too content.
As he got back out of the changing rooms after showering, he noticed someone standing around there, waiting. Kaori. God, he was never happier to see her. He had seen her very shortly during lunch break, so he could get her his shirt, but then she was off to have a quick shower.
She had been wearing a man's coat that was way too big on her and her uniform blouse underneath looked like it had blood stains all over it. Hitoshi had been quite worried about her, but he hoped that now the time for an explanation had come. After all he was out - he had lost the sparring match during the first bracket and that was it. The one thing that comforted him, was that everyone else came from basic training and was training like this pretty much every day.
"Hey, champ." she greeted him with a slight smile. She still looked incredibly tired. Hitoshi huffed.
"Not really. Dropped out first round." he mumbled as she walked towards him. His heart felt heavy, and he didn't even know why. He knew that we wouldn't win this thing realistically. But still it felt like such a damn failure.
"But you made it into the sparring rounds at all! Toshi, that's huge. Come here." Kaori said and held out her arms. Hitoshi hugged her tightly. Every time he hugged his sister he realized how he had gotten taller than her. Kaori was maybe around 5'5", while he had grown to 5'9" during the last two years. It still surprised him every single time, especially since he had always looked up to his sister.
"You did so well, Toshi. I was sitting up there and watching and I heard a lot of people say how well you did down there. No reason to be sad." she told him. But for some reason that made Hitoshi even sadder. He could just feel all the pressure of the last few weeks burst out of him, as he started crying.
"I'm... I'm sorry, there's... really no reason... for me... to cry like a baby." he mumbled, embarrassed about being this upset about something so small. It really shouldn't matter that much to him. Of course, he had hoped to get all the way to the top, but he knew from the start that wasn't happening. But still... he couldn't help it. He just couldn't help what he wanted in his heart.
"Hey, hey, come on. Let's sit down." Kaori said and sat down in the hallway, leaning against the wall. Hitoshi followed suit and leaned against the wall, quickly wiping the tears from his face. He just felt tired and exhausted now. Maybe he had let it all out already and he could get over it.
"I just... I just really wanted to get into the Criminology course. The one combined with basic training. But with this, I doubt I'll make it. Maybe I should just settle for doing Psychology and get it over with. Sure, it won't be as good, but I can still get into Criminal Psychology later on with it, right?" he told her, feeling more and more empty. This was terrible. This was just terrible.
"Hey, don't worry about that. I think, you caught Mr. Aizawa's attention during the fight. I'd rarely see him this enthusiastic. You'll be fine. See what happens during the next few years. If you want, I can talk to him about possibly transferring you and he might be able to pull some strings. It'll be fine, Toshi. You did really well out there." Kaori replied, still hugging him, running her hand through his hair.
"I don't know... if I can't do it on my own, did I even really do it?" he wanted to know. This all just felt really discouraging to Hitoshi. He knew this was just an initial thing, it was probably the stress and everything. It still stung.
"Yeah. Toshi, you did amazing. Now see what happens, I'd say that Mr. Aizawa might have a word with you soon. If not, then let me know and I'll talk to him. We get along well, he won't mind me asking about it. It'll be fine." Kaori replied.
"You're the best sister." Hitoshi said, sniffling a little.
"You're the best brother." Kaori answered him with a grin.
"You know what's terrible about it, too?"
"What?"
"Kaminari totally saw me look all weak and shit out there."
Kaori gave him a weird look and then started laughing out loud. It was a real concern in the back of Hitoshi's head, but of course it wasn't really the worst thing for him at the moment. He laughed with her and it honestly felt good to be laughing again. Maybe things weren't so bad. Maybe it was time for a plan B.
"If that's a reason for him not to go out with you, then he's not worth your time anyway." Kaori replied, still laughing a little.
"As if I'd ever be brave enough to ask him out." Hitoshi commented, looking up at the ceiling and smiling. Denki Kaminari had somehow wedged his way into his heart. He had always seen him working a part-time job in his favourite coffee shop during his last year of high school. Of course he still kept going to the same coffee shop when he started university, but then one day he had seen him hanging out with a group from basic training and he had almost lost it there and then.
"I'm pretty sure you'll find a good moment some day. I mean, you've been pining for him for such a long time, it would be a shame to not even try." Kaori said. Hitoshi laughed and nodded.
"So. Whose coat is that? Because that is definitely not yours." he asked. Kaori blushed a little.
"It's uh... It's Mr. Aizawa's coat." she answered. Hitoshi gave her a questioning look. He had heard some whispers about how well his sister was getting on with the professor and knowing Kaori she definitely had a crush on him. Her blushing just confirmed that theory even more.
"Kao-chan, how the hell did you get that? You have to be careful, people are talking about you. It looks pretty bad." he said. Kaori sighed and buried her face in her hands for a while, before looking up at him again.
"I know it looks bad, but really... it is completely harmless. There is nothing going on, okay? Even if there was, I think he'd grade my papers stricter than anything, just to make sure there was no wrong impression. Toshi, I'm aware people are talking, but... this was really harmless." she replied.
"So what happened?" Hitoshi wanted to know. He felt a little bad, putting his sister on the spot like this. He knew she was aware of the rumours and he knew she used to beat herself up about them, but she had started to just ignore them and be above them. Obviously they were still getting to her.
"Well, I was on work studies, doing the night shift, there was an incident which left me texting Aizawa and asking him whether he could pop by Hosu and give me a lift to the Sports Festival, so I could be there to support you. And because of that... incident... my uniform was all bloody and whatnot, so Aizawa gave me his coat, so I could cover the blood stains up a little. Imagine I had walked in there in my blouse full of blood. That would not have been good." Kaori explained.
"Shit, what happened at work studies?" Hitoshi wanted to know, more concerned about her sister getting hurt than about her being the topic of some rumours. He had seen the blouse shortly and it did look really bad.
"It's confidential. Will probably be on the news this evening, though. I might tell you at home, alright?" she answered.
"Sure. Did you sleep at all?" Hitoshi wanted to know. Kaori just shrugged, looking exhausted for the first time since he saw her after losing the fight.
"I slept in the taxi on the way here. I collapsed one time when we got back-up coming in from the police station and then on the way to the taxi. Aizawa had to carry me to the car, it was really embarrassing." she replied and sighed.
"Jeez, Kao-chan, no wonder there's rumours. You just get into the weirdest situations with him." Hitoshi remarked, not even thinking about what he was saying. Kaori rested her head on her knees.
"It's not fair. It's not like I'm trying to get into these situations or like I'm bribing him with anything to get good grades or anything. I get my good grades, because I study all night. All that stuff just happens. Why can't people just leave it alone already?"
"Hey, sorry, I didn't mean it like that... if you had the chance you would fuck him, though, right?" Hitoshi asked curiously. Aizawa was 100% Kaori's type and she knew it full well. She was absolutely crushing on him.
"Hell yeah. I'm not dumb." she answered and laughed a little. Hitoshi grinned.
"Good, because you'd be insane not to. But seriously, don't do anything stupid, okay? And if you do... well, don't get caught, alright?" he replied.
"Oh my God, I'm not going to have an affair with my professor! Like, I probably wouldn't be able to say no, but I just am not going to do it. Alright? And if I did, I wouldn't tell you about it." she said.
"Yikes, I thought we were besties." Hitoshi mumbled when he heard some noise from the changing room. The door opened and a small guy with full blond hair walked out. Denki Kaminari. He looked tired and exhausted and had a good few scratches and bruises on him. Hitoshi still thought he was the most beautiful being he had ever laid eyes upon. He just looked... so cute.
"Hey, how did the fight go?" Hitoshi asked him, as he was passing. Kaminari turned around and looked like it took him a moment to realize who was talking to him. When he realized, his face lit up.
"Oh hey. Didn't know you went to U.A., too. Crazy, man. Fight went alright, but I lost. But hey, at least I got in the top 16, huh? It'll be better next year." he replied with a big smile on his face.
"Yeah, sure. I guess, I'll see you around then?" Hitoshi answered, fully aware of Kaori's eyes on him.
"Sure, see you at the coffee shop tomorrow morning." Kaminari answered and walked off. Hitoshi waited until he had passed a corner, before squealing a little and looking at Kaori who was giving him a wide grin.
"Damn, Toshi, that was kinda cute. You managed to make small talk. Never seen you do that." she remarked.
"Oh, shut up!"
"Well, I guess I better head out and bring this coat back to Mr. Aizawa. Text me where you're sitting, I'll watch the rest of the festival with you then."

16 - Shinsou

As she is about to become Professor Aizawa's TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country... AU, OC x Aizawa
Mama, I got your wild-eyed taste
(Lykke Li - Rich Kids Blues)
Kaori Shinsou woke up when a rough hand was gently shaking her shoulder. It was such a careful touch that she didn't realise where she was and what was happening at first. Why would anyone even need to wake her?
She opened her eyes and realized she was in a car. A car that she didn't know. Her head was resting in someone's lap... she could smell coffee. After-shave. The smell of an old, comfortable sweater. She carefully turned her head and looked into the eyes of her professor. Just as she had expected. She was just about to go back to sleep again, when she realized. She fell asleep. She fell asleep with her head in her professor's lap. And it was the best fucking sleep she had in a long time.
"Oh my God!" she exclaimed and sat up straight quickly. She gave Aizawa a horrified look, hoping she hadn't been weird or anything.
"I'm so sorry, professor, I didn't mean to..." she quickly said. Aizawa just gave her a tired smile.
"It's fine, Shinsou. You were tired. You deserved a good nap. But we're here." he told her in his emotionless voice. Well, it was emotionless when you didn't know what to listen for. When Aizawa showed any emotion in his voice, it was subtle.
"Okay, well... I guess I better get going then. How much is half the fare?" she wanted to know. Kaori would have tried to pay the whole thing, but she didn't have a whole lot left in her wallet. And her wallet and keys was the only thing she had had with her during that night shift. There was a whole lot of her stuff in her locker at the police station, but she never got a chance to go and get that.
"It's fine, don't worry about it. Are you really going to go out like that?" Aizawa replied. Kaori looked down on herself and realised that she looked pretty scary in her bloodied clothing. It also didn't feel great to still be covered in blood. She was absolutely dying for a shower right now.
"Yeah... I see what you mean. Not like I have anything to change into, though. Guess the kids will just have to get over it." she mumbled, feeling a lot more self-conscious about being covered in blood right now. The way it was such a mundane struggle almost made her laugh, if she hadn't been so tired.
Aizawa sat up and took off his long, black coat. He handed it over to Kaori. Kaori had seen Aizawa in this long, black coat only a handful of times, but it looked so elegant on him. And it would be terribly oversized on her.
"Wear this until you can find something else. I'll let Miss Chiyo know that she should let you use the showers when you get a chance, probably during lunch. I can imagine you're dying to get out of that." he said and gestured at her general appearance. Kaori huffed and grinned.
"Thanks, Mr. Aizawa. I'll get it back to you as soon as I can. Might be able to borrow my brother's shirt or something. He'll be in his P.E. uniform pretty much all day anyway, he can survive being in it for a bit longer." she replied and took the coat out of his hands. With that in her hands, she got out of the taxi, quickly putting on the coat and holding it closed so it would cover the blood stains on her blouse. It sort of worked. The coat was way too big for her, so there were still some visible blood stains, but it was better than nothing. And she wouldn't look so out of place in her police uniform.
Aizawa gave her a smile when he had gotten out of the taxi after paying and looked her up and down. Kaori felt a little self-conscious about it, because she probably looked really weird in his coat. She had a more petite frame than Aizawa and she was a good few inches smaller than him. On Aizawa that coat went down to above his knees. For her it stopped somewhere mid-calf.
"How bad does it look?" she asked finally. Aizawa gave her a little amused laugh and shook his head.
"It's fine. It's a bit big on you, but it suits you." he replied.
"Yeah, right. Somehow I kinda doubt that..." she said, a grin spreading on her face nevertheless.
"Hey, Kao-chan! You're super late!" she heard someone calling. Kaori turned towards where the voice came from and saw Uehara together with Kawano standing at the entrance of the stadium and waving at her.
"You better get going. Don't wanna keep you. Take a shower when you can later on. You really don't want to be covered in blood all day, trust me on that one." he said and walked away towards the staff entrance to the stadium. Kaori looked after him, wondering just how he managed to look so handsome, even when he was mostly bandaged up. She had noticed that he had gotten rid of some of the bandages, but a lot of his face was still covered and his arms were still bandaged up as well. He had his hands free, so he could hold things again at least.
"Oh my God, Kao-chan, stop pining for Aizawa and come with us! Takami's saved seats, so we better hurry or he'll get distracted!" Kaori heard Uehara shout at her. She turned around with a massive blush in her face. Had Uehara really just announced to everyone around her that she was pining for her professor? This had to be one of the worst days of her life. At least she had Aizawa's coat. It was really comfortable and it smelt like him and somehow that combination made her feel safe and secure.
"I'm coming, chill out! I probably had the worst night of my life, Hana." she answered as she made her way over to her best friend.
"Shit, Shinsou, is that blood on your shirt?" Kawano asked when she got closer. Kaori pulled the coat a little tighter and waited until she got closer.
"God, you look terrible, what the hell happened to you?" Uehara commented as well. Kaori sighed. Did she really look that awful? Judging by everyone's comments she had to be a sight to behold.
"Not so loud, guys, I just got back from a night shift at the police station and some shit went down, but it's confidential, so I can't really tell you about it. I mean you'll probably hear on the news soon enough." she said quietly, once she had gotten close enough to them. Uehara gave her a concerned look.
"You got back from a night shift in a taxi with Aizawa? Must have been some kind of night shift." she replied, wiggling her brows. Kaori rolled her eyes. Uehara was obsessed with her having a crush on Aizawa. She wasn't wrong about it, but the point was that she had never told Uehara anything about it. As far as she could remember at least. Kaori sometimes wondered if she was really that obvious about it.
"Yeah, I asked him for a lift, because I would have never made it otherwise. There was kind of a big thing happening and someone almost died and I didn't get any sleep whatsoever, so yeah... All I want is some coffee." Kaori summarized the events of the night, trying not to give away too much information.
"Shit, sounds really bad. Well, there's not much time to get coffee right now. Let's head inside, they're probably gonna have a short break at some point in between, anyway." Uehara said.
"Are you okay, Shinsou?" Kawano asked, an extremely concerned look on his face. It was kinda cute.
"Look like shit, feel like shit, but apart from that I'm fine. Gotta pull through and support my little brother." she replied and tiredly pretended to be cheering. It came across really unmotivated.
Kaori remembered that she should probably go and text Hitoshi about borrowing his shirt. He'd probably be busy during the lunch break and she'd end up not finding him. Aizawa was right about what he said about being covered in blood for the whole day. Kaori hated it already.
The three of them got into the stadium and walked up the stairs as quickly as they could. Kaori was dragging her feet on the ground and almost felt on the verge of passing out again. Maybe she should head over to Miss Chiyo right away and get a good fucking nap. But the campus nurse would be busy enough during the whole festival, so it was probably better not to bother her.
"Oh, look, there's Takami! Damn, he really got the best seats picked out for us." Kawano said, pointing at a figure leaning back in one of the seats, blond curls all over the place and a pair of sick shades over his eyes. Where Takami got his sunglasses from was a mystery to everyone, but Kaori had yet to meet a single person that didn't think they looked beyond cool.
"Yo, Shinsou, what mud pit did you get dragged through?" he asked her, as he saw her. She only shot him a glare and fell into the chair next to him. Her eyes were burning and her whole body was hurting. Every fiber of her being screamed for her to go to sleep. But she couldn't.
"Rough night, huh?" Takami asked again, this time more quietly, so only she could hear it. Kaori nodded.
"Yeah, I don't even think rough is the right word for that. I'm just ready to collapse right now." she answered.
"Well, I think I have just the thing for you then..."
"Dude, don't fucking give me weed at a university event!"
"It's not weed, chill out. Besides, I'm not that dumb. I wouldn't go dealing it out in the open like that." he replied and produced a large paper cup, holding it up to Kaori's face with a proud smile.
"Is that... is that..." she stammered getting a little closer until she got a whiff of whatever was inside it. It was heavenly. Dark, rich, full and earthy. And it was even still hot. Maybe the day could be saved after all.
"It's a large cup of coffee, just for you. You really look like you need it." he said. Kaori felt some tears welling up in her eyes, as she took the cup. It was like all the stress from the night finally came crashing down on her and all she could do was let the tears flow down her cheeks.
"Th-thanks, Takami. This is the best fucking thing you've ever done for me. I love you so much right now." she said, sniffing a little and wiping the tears from her eyes.

15 - Aizawa

One by one they all fall down
Keep losing ground, losing ground
(Claire De Lune - Save Yourself)
The day had looked dreary at first, but it soon cleared up and got brighter. By the time Aizawa had made it to Hosu City, it was looking like the sun would come up any second. He had been awake when he got Shinsou's text about getting a lift with him. He was about to say no, but then he figured it would be the most logical thing to do - she'd be able to get to school (which seemed to be a problem for whatever reason), Hosu City was on the way, and they could share the taxi fare, which would save him money. Not that he was going to let her pay half of it anyway.
She hadn't responded to him until shortly before he left the house. All she did was send a location with a very cryptic message. Aizawa half suspected she was drunk or high on something and needed help, but it made no sense, considering the first message had been perfectly clear. After thinking up a few possibilities, he figured he'd just wait and see what was going on.
After all, it would be very unlike Shinsou to be drinking that much in the middle of the week, especially since she had apparently planned to attend the Sports Festival. But then again, the most talented people needed a break from time to time. And not just a day off, a complete break from reality.
"Mister, I can't go any further. Police blocked off that road. Your stop should just be up ahead in that little alleyway. I'll wait here, if you want." the taxi driver suddenly said to him. Aizawa gave him a confused look, being snapped back to reality. Police were blocking off the road? What the hell did Shinsou get herself into?
"Sir?" the taxi driver asked again. Aizawa nodded.
"Yeah, I'll be back." he said and got out of the car. He made his way towards the side alley that the driver had pointed to. There were a bunch of police cars and police tape everywhere. He could see crime scene technicians walk around the place. What the hell had happened here?
"Sir, you can't just-" someone said to him, but Aizawa practically shoved his badge into their face.
"It's fine, I can." he mumbled and walked closer. He could see Shinsou lying on top of the bonnet of a patrol car, staring up into the morning sky. There was another guy just a few years older than her standing next to the car, smoking a cigarette absent-mindedly. He looked tired as hell.
"What's going on here?" Aizawa asked as he approached the patrol car. Shinsou turned her head and jumped off the bonnet as soon as she saw him.
"Morning, prof. Sorry to jump you with asking for a favour like that, but it's been a weird night." Kaori Shinsou said, gesturing vaguely at the crime scene around her. Aizawa quickly surveyed her. She was in her police uniform, but without the jacket. The tie was loosened up, there was a lot of blood on her blouse and probably on her pants, too (it wasn't easy to see, because they were navy blue). There was some dirt on the knee part of her pants, her hair was disheveled and she looked like she hadn't slept in a week. Knowing her, she probably hadn't.
"My God, you look terrible." he commented. Shinsou gave him a tired smile and just shrugged.
"Yeah, well, I haven't exactly had time to get much beauty sleep. Also, you're one to talk, still bandaged up and all." she answered, her voice sounding a little slurry. Aizawa was wondering exactly how long she had been awake for.
"Fair point. Let's get going, we don't have all day." he said and started walking back towards the taxi. There were a lot of questions he wanted to ask, but he didn't want to do it with all these other people around.
"I'm off, Hirota. See you." he heard Shinsou say, as she seemed to be jogging over to him. She quickly caught up with him and kept the same pace, although she was panting a lot. Aizawa stopped walking and looked at her. She looked like she was about to pass out, dragging her feet and her eyes falling shut from time to time.
"Are you okay, Shinsou?" he asked, a concerned tone to his voice. She gave him a faint smile and nodded, just as her eyes fell shut and she broke down. Aizawa swore and dove down and just about managed to catch her. He had no time to waste, so he just picked her up and carried her all the way back to the taxi.
"Oh shit, is she okay, man?" the taxi driver asked, when he saw Aizawa maneuver Shinsou into the car. Aizawa was aware that it probably looked really weird to come back with an unconscious young woman from a crime scene who was wearing a police uniform with blood all over it.
"What... ah shit, it happened again, didn't it?" he heard Shinsou's weak voice say. Good, she was awake again. If she had been passed out any longer, he would have taken her straight to the hospital.
"She'll be fine. Probably. Let's go." he told the taxi driver, who was still looking at them concerned. He then turned to Shinsou, giving her the strictest look he could muster at this point.
"What the hell do you mean with 'it happened again'?" he wanted to know. Shinsou sighed, getting comfortable in her seat and leaning back her head.
"I kinda passed out earlier, probably too exhausted. I was fine for a good while until I got up from that car." she answered, defeat in her voice. What was that poor girl putting herself through?
"When was the last time you slept?"
Shinsou gave him a confused look, as if she really had to think about it. That already told him all he needed to know, but he still waited for her to try and do the maths in her head. She didn't seem to be too successful.
"I have no idea. Slept at all? Probably yesterday afternoon, I had some sort of a nap for maybe twenty minutes. I don't think I've gotten proper sleep since I came off the painkillers." Shinsou said with a sigh.
"Insomnia?" Aizawa guessed. He knew Shinsou wasn't stupid enough to do this on some sort of desire to prove herself.
"Yeah. It's a genetic thing. There are times when it's not that bad, but most of the time I can't get much sleep." she explained. She probably wouldn't have told him all that if she was less exhausted.
"Why were you up all night? I know you prefer the night shifts with your work study, but shouldn't they be over early enough?" Aizawa wanted to know. Shinsou covered her eyes with her hands and groaned. She looked like she was completely done and not far from a breakdown.
"Well, shit kinda went down just at the end of my shift." she mumbled and gave him another tired look.
"Sorry, didn't mean to swear." she quickly added. Aizawa laughed a little. As if he'd mind swearing.
"It's fine. Swear as much as you like. What happened?" he asked. Shinsou smiled at him proudly, while he took a sip from his coffee that had gone cold. He had been told not to drink too much, but he didn't think he could realistically do it.
"Stain. We almost caught him." she answered. Aizawa almost spit out his coffee, not because it tasted like shit (which it definitely did) but because of how casually Shinsou had just revealed that fact.
"You what?"
"We almost had him. Iida had him in fact. But we were too late and Iida got injured. Which meant we had to get him to the hospital and we had to wait and secure the crime scene and give statements and then I collapsed, so Hirota started his report while I was recovering on the car. It was a messy night and I think all the excitement might have been what pushed me over the edge. Sleepwise, I'm fine. More or less." she explained yawning. Aizawa was shaking his head.
"Tensei Iida got injured? By Stain?" he asked again.
"Yeah. Well, technically it was a Stain suspect, but you know what I mean. It was bad, Mr. Aizawa. We got there and he was just lying in a pool of his own blood and wasn't conscious. He was only barely breathing. We called the ambulance and I did the whole first aid thing and... I honestly don't even know how I managed to remember what to do, felt like my brain was in emergency mode." she answered and leaned her head against his shoulder. Normally, Aizawa wouldn't have let that slide, but the girl was tired. And she had been through a lot. And he liked her.
"What are they thinking, having a young girl deal with stuff like that?" the taxi driver commented from the front. Aizawa frowned at him. He knew that Shinsou was completely aware of the kind of job she was getting herself into. She was tough. She didn't need a pity party.
"Thanks for the concern, but I'm fine. I know what I'm doing." Shinsou replied to him coldly. He smiled and raised an eyebrow.
"It sure don't look like it." he mumbled. Shinsou didn't seem to notice the comment, but Aizawa did notice it.
"Hey, she's my student and she's very capable of handling herself. She's worked hard to deal with situations like this, alright?" he snapped at him. If there was one thing he hated was when someone made offhand comments like this about anyone - as if they were somehow too weak to deal with some shit.
Shinsou gave him a surprised look, even though she looked like she was about to fall asleep any second now. She mumbled something that sounded like 'thanks' under her breath. Aizawa sighed. If there was another Stain case, that meant another workload for him. He had just about finished up with all the reports from the last murder. Stain sure was getting busy lately.
"Sounds like you did well, Shinsou. If you need some time off class for whatever reason, it'll be okay." Aizawa said to the half-asleep girl leaning against his shoulder. She opened her eyes and nodded.
"I'll be fine. I'll schedule my lessons during Mr. Ishiyama's lessons, I already did a module on them last year." she replied.
"That's up to you. So are you sure it was Stain again?" Aizawa wanted to know. He was curious to hear about it. If Tensei Iida had been face to face with Stain that might make his job a lot easier. At this point they had a psychological profile on him, but if Iida could connect that with a description of what he looked like, they might be able to finally find the guy. And then they could focus their efforts on that one suspect.
"Pretty sure. Of course not 100% sure. There was a message left, but not as elaborate. It seems that he got away just before we arrived at the scene. It was tugged inside Iida's hat. He had stab wounds in both his legs and I suppose he would be considered in a public office or working for the community in a way. So that bit would fit, as well." Shinsou said and yawned.
"Well, that was just my theory. It's not part of the official profile. Where did you get that bit anyway?" he wanted to know. She shouldn't even know about this and it wasn't mentioned anywhere in the files she had seen. How the hell did she know?
"Oh, I just figured that out myself. I have been following the case since middle school. Didn't know you came to the same conclusion, but if that's what you think it should be official. I think you're right, prof." she answered.
"Thanks. Tsukauchi refuses to give that information out to the public for whatever reason. Thinks it might cause a panic. Plus, we don't have 100% certainty which of the Stain letters are originals and which are just copycats. But I still think it's pretty obvious what Stain is trying to do here." he said, a bit of pride sounding in his voice. He had always known Shinsou was a brilliant student.
"He wants to show people up for being hypocrites. For being in these kind of professions for all the wrong reasons - money, fame, getting the feeling of power over people, all that jazz. He obviously thinks he's doing the right thing..." Shinsou replied, slurring her words. The poor kid was tired as hell.
"It's still a long way until we're at U.A. Sleep for a while, if you can. I'll wake you up when we get there." Aizawa said to her. Shinsou yawned.
"Thanks, Sir, that sounds brilliant..."

14 - Shinsou
Kaori Shinsou has always been fascinated by people's minds. She is one of the best students in her Criminal Psychology course at U.A. and - being the lucky girl she is - her professor is not only one handsome dude, but is also working on the case of the serial killer Stain - a case that has been going on for years. As she is about to become Professor Aizawa's TA during the next term, a lot of other interesting cases start popping up all over the country... AU, OC x Aizawa
Sit down, wait and enter hell
(Deine Lakaien - Overpaid)
"I really don't know why you always insist on working nights, Shinsou." Hideaki Hirota said. Kaori stopped drumming along on the dashboard to the song that was playing on the radio and looked over at him.
"I've told you a million times that I have insomnia, Hirota. I'm either going to lie in bed staring at the walls or I'm working. At least work keeps me busy and it gets me tired enough so I can get a few naps in during the day." she said and continued bobbing her head along to the music again.
Kaori Shinsou loved working the night shift during her internship. Normally, she wasn't looking forward to nights - all they meant were tossing and turning and maybe lying half-awake for an hour and feeling even worse afterwards. If she worked during that time, she could at least do something useful.
"Maybe you should get that insomnia thing checked out again. Sounds pretty bad, if you ask me. You really should be taking it a little easier, you're working like a fucking robot, girl." Hirota mumbled and shook his head, turning the corner to stop at their favourite place to get coffee for the night shifts.
"Where would the world be if everyone hated the night shift as much as you do, Hirota?" Kaori asked with a big grin on her face. She had been paired up with Hirota whenever they worked the same days for the last two years. They basically knew each other inside out at this stage. And Kaori loved how grumpy and cynical he was about everything, it had a certain charm.
"Seriously though, you should really be staying at the office and write up some reports or do some paperwork instead. Especially with your concussion. And after you've been involved in that arson case a few days ago, too! How are you not traumatized by that? It was a horrible scene." Hirota said. Kaori almost felt sick to her stomach when she remembered seeing the charred corpses, with just the teeth still intact. They had their mouths wide open, probably screaming in pain.
Kaori shivered a little. She was definitely traumatized by that, but it was something that was a given in this line of work. She'd been talking to the councillor at university just yesterday and had made a few more appointments, seeing how stressful things had gotten lately. It was a fairly normal procedure for most students who made it as far in U.A. as she had. No one went to work in some sort of law enforcement for more than two years without any counselling. People who tried to do that usually dropped out real quick. Some others tried to tough it out, but had to take a break at a mental hospital eventually.
"Bold of you to assume I'm not traumatized. I just like cruising through the city at night. It's calming. Especially with you, Hirota." she answered with a shit-eating grin. Hirota just raised his eyebrows and parked the car in front of the convenience store.
"Of course. Let's rephrase that. I'm surprised Iida let you go on patrol, instead of telling you to stay in the office and do paperwork." Hirota said, as he got out of the car. Kaori got out of the passenger seat, quickly grabbing her hat from the dashboard.
"You know Iida can't say no to me." she replied, while putting on her hat. Hirota shook his head and gave her a disapproving look.
"Whatever happened at that last Christmas party, huh?" Hirota mumbled. Kaori grinned at him.
"What happens at the Christmas party, stays at the Christmas party." she said and shrugged while they were walking into the store.
"Shinsou, he's like 8 years older than you!"
"Oh my God, Hirota, chill. Nothing happened, okay? He just brought me home, because I was close to passing out."
If only Kaori knew if she was telling him the truth or not. She really couldn't remember any part of the Christmas party that had happened after she had done those Tequila shots with that guy from the Kiyashi police department. All she remembered was waking up in Tensei Iida's apartment, in his bed, next to him. And sneaking out through the window without him waking up. She was especially proud of that one.
"I sure hope nothing happened. The rumours going around aren't really helping you, you know? And the way you've got Iida wrapped around your finger doesn't, either." Hirota said in a serious tone. Kaori sighed.
"I know, I know. But hey, nothing I can do, right? It'll blow over eventually, I'm sure." she replied. She knew that he was right. The whole thing had led to quite some awkwardness right after the Christmas party. But for now it was mostly forgotten and forgiven. And this year Kaori had sworn not to overdo it again. At least not at the office Christmas party. She was just about to order her coffee (which she was allowed to drink again from the day of the Sports Festival onwards, and since it was 4 in the morning, it was technically the day of the Sports Festival), when her and Hirota's pagers went off at the same time. They looked at each other in surprise and then quickly made their way out of the store and back into the police car, where their radio equipment was.
"Hirota here, what's up?"
"This is Iida, I need back-up on Ryuunji-dori, cornering on Komadome-dori, please come in. I'm in pursuit of a suspect in the Stain murders. I repeat Ryuunji-dori, cornering on Komadome-dori." Iida's voice came over the radio. Hirota and Kaori looked at each other, shocked expressions on their faces. Iida was pursuing a Stain suspect? Kaori could feel her pulse go through the roof.
"Shit, we better floor it." Hirota said. Kaori nodded and turned on the blue lights and sirens. It felt like the first time she did that, even though it wasn't. They had been heading to incidents with sirens and blue lights before, but this time it was serious. Like seriously serious. This was the real deal.
"Fuck, you think he's really got Stain? You think we might really be there when they catch him?" Kaori asked as Hirota was sinking his foot into the gas pedal. He just shrugged and kept his eyes on the road.
"Looks like it. Iida wouldn't be this persistent if he wasn't convinced that this suspect is actually Stain. Can you get his location on the map?" Hirota replied. Kaori nodded and turned on the location marker for Iida's car. He was currently moving through the streets quickly, probably trying to find a way to cut off his Stain suspect.
"Looks like his car has stopped at some cul-de-sac." Kaori said, after following the red dot on the map that was Iida's car for a while. Hirota swore under his breath and accelerated a little more. Kaori saw that they were nowhere close enough to Iida's position and it looked like everyone else was even further out. Shit. If this was really Stain then it could go bad for Iida, being trapped in a small side alley.
"Well, I guess you better cancel whatever plans you had for the day, because this might eat into your morning." Hirota warned her. Cancel her plans for today? She would have been fine cancelling the Sports Festival any other year, but this year Hitoshi would be there. Fuck. Some days overtime really sucked.
"My little brother won't be happy, if I don't turn up to support him at the Sports Festival..." Kaori mumbled.
"Yeah, well, that's the night shift for you. Why did you nag Iida to go on patrol when you had plans later?"
"Because I'm a dumbass. Shit, I'll never make it in time at this rate." Kaori mumbled in frustration, almost forgetting that they were about to possibly arrest Stain. The same Stain who had killed 17 people and wounded 22, leaving most of them unable to continue life as normal.
"At least you'll have a good excuse. There's no one who could give you a lift on their way to uni?" Hirota suggested while turning a sharp corner at full speed. Kaori had to hold onto the roof of the car with how they were being thrown around. If she didn't know how good of a driver Hirota was she'd be pissing herself out of fear for her life.
"I dunno... I think my professor lives in Naruhata? But he's getting a taxi to school and back at the moment, I think. Would they be coming through Hosu?" I wanted to know. Hirota only nodded.
"How much does he make that he can afford getting a taxi from Naruhata to Musutafu? That's a bit decadent, isn't it?"
"He got both his arms broken in the same incident where I got my concussion. And a rib or two. And his face." Kaori said, checking how far away they were from Iida's position. Shit, still a few minutes to go.
"Oh damn. Fair enough, I doubt he can drive a car at the moment. Who is your prof that he's still going to work in that state?" Hirota wanted to know, taking another sharp bend at full speed.
"Shouta Aizawa." Kaori said as she got out her phone. Hirota was right, it was worth a shot to ask if he could stop by Hosu quickly on his way to U.A. It also meant they could share the taxi fare, so they'd both benefit.
"Oh fuck, that dude is scary. Had him on the scene in a hostage situation once, really gave me the shivers." Hirota commented.
"He's not that bad. He is working on the Stain case, so he'll probably be interested to see what's going on anyway." Kaori told Hirota.
"Well, two more bends and we're there, so you better get ready for whatever is happening in that dark alley." Hirota replied and took the first bend. Kaori quickly sent off the text and put her phone away, checking that she had her badge and her taser. She took a deep breath, as Hirota shot around the second bend and stopped the car in the middle of the road. The two of them got out.
Kaori quickly saw Iida's patrol car with the blue lights still on. It was eerily quiet at the scene. She quickly made her way around it and was greeted by the sight of Tensei Iida lying in a pool of his own blood, his face pale and his eyes closed.
"Shit! Iida!" she shouted and ran up to him, kneeling down beside him to check for any breathing. It was shallow, but he was still breathing. That was a good sign. He had been losing copious amounts of blood, though. She quickly let her eyes wander over Iida's body until she finally saw the two big wounds on both his legs. Swearing under her breath, she took off her uniform jacket and pressed it against one of the wounds, just as Hirota arrived at the scene.
"Fuck! Is he alive?" Hirota shouted and came running closer.
"Yeah, but he's unconscious and has lost a lot of blood. Give me your uniform jacket and call an ambulance right now!" Kaori answered, as she wrapped her own jacket tightly around the wound on his right leg in an attempt to at least somewhat stop the bleeding. Why the hell did Iida always have to go out and do dangerous shit like this on his own? It was a miracle he had made it this long without serious injuries.
"Here. I've got emergency services on the line." Hirota told her quietly and handed her his jacket. Kaori nodded and started wrapping up the wound on Iida's left leg with Hirota's jacket. Once she had finished that, she took a deep breath, trying to sort out what came next. Recovery position. Right.
Kaori placed his right arm in a right angle over his head and left it lying there in whatever position it fell. She then placed his left arm on his right shoulder, holding it in place there, while pulling up his left knee as far as possible, making sure his foot was still placed firmly on the ground. She then gently rolled his body onto the side, making sure to support his head.
When she was done with that, she adjusted his leg until it was in the proper position and tilted his head, slightly opening his mouth. Hirota came over to her, looking down at the scene. Kaori bent her head down to Iida's face again to check on his breathing. He was still breathing. Thank God.
"I got an ambulance on the way, as well as the crime scene technicians. Anything else you need here?" he asked.
"Get me the space blanket and the first aid kit and secure the scene, I guess. Not much more we can do until the paramedics get here and take him away." Kaori answered. Hirota nodded and jogged towards the patrol car.
"Hey, Iida, can you hear me?" she whispered, carefully touching his cheek. No response. It was only now that the panic started to rise inside her chest. What if Iida died here? Shit, what if Iida died on their watch, because Hirota and her decided it was the perfect time to get a coffee?
"Iida, please wake up. Please don't die on me, Iida..." she kept saying over and over, her voice shivering more and more.
"Shin...sou...? Is that... you... Shinsou?" she heard a quiet voice say. Looking down on Iida, he still had his eyes closed, but he was talking. That meant he was at least semi-conscious again. But God, he had lost so much blood. Kaori was basically sitting in the pool of blood, trying not to think too much about it.
"Yeah, it's me. Stay with me, Iida. We've got an ambulance on the way, you'll be good as new in no time. Just stay with me. Talk to me." Kaori said, rubbing his arm to keep him warm until Hirota got here with the blanket.
"I... I feel... cold..."
"It's okay, Iida, Hirota is on his way with the space blanket."
"You're... you're with... Hiro...ta?"
"Yeah, Hirota is here, too. We got here as quickly as we could. I can already see him coming back with the blanket. You'll be fine, Iida, just stay with me and keep talking. Tell me what happened."
"I... had him... but... he..."
"Who did you have?"
"Stain..."
