From Dan Rather, American journalist and commentator:
6 Principles Many Journalists Miss (Or, Why Nixon hated your correspondent)
"If I may, there’s something I need to get off my chest.
"As democracy remains under siege, it has been frustrating to watch how the press covers politics these days.
"I am reminded by lessons that came to me during the Nixon years as a CBS News correspondent, which I’ll add here:
"Enough with Both-sides-ism. When one side lies intentionally and repeatedly, they are no longer entitled to the benefit of the doubt. They should be held to account, right away. Do not simply repeat the narratives they spew.
"Prioritize Live Fact-Checking. Rigorous and robust fact-checking is the best defense against misinformation, intentional lies, and deflection. If Trump says the sky is green, the story isn’t that the sky is now green; the story is that the sky is still blue and Trump got it wrong.
"Ask Lawmakers Hard Questions. Ask about the fundamental principles of democracy. Push them to go on the record that Biden won the 2020 election. Ask if they support the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
"This writing is not to offer any claim of knowing it all. Your correspondent has made his share of mistakes, but after more than seven decades I believe I have picked up a few useful guideposts. Good journalism is always worth it. Our democracy depends on it."

When they lay off Pulitzer winners, that means there's really no hope left for the rest of us. As if we didn't already know that. ☹️

FTA: The Los Angeles Times’ layoffs are part of more than 17,000 job cuts made in the media industry so far this year — a record high. More people have lost their job in the first five months of 2023 than the same period in 2020, when 16,750 cuts were announced, according to global outplacement and business coaching firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas. Other news outlets that have undergone layoffs this year include The Washington Post, NPR and BuzzFeed News.

Craig talks about journalism
I was sitting here watching Craig Ferguson's "Tickle Fight" comedy TV special from 2017 on Netflix when I came across this bit of his about journalism and just HAD TO share.
Content warning: swearing. Quality warning: You'll see the reflection of my floor lamp in the middle of the frame; poorly balanced sound. But he hit the nail on the head with this one.

Saturday is the 100th anniversary of Charles Schultz's birth. And, not surprisingly, since Schultz is the GOAT of comics artists, many current artists are honoring him in Saturday's edition. 15/20 comics that McClatchy runs have a Peanuts twist tomorrow. 💜

One reason I love Dilbert is because he is in almost the exact same dysfunctional relationship with layoffs as I am. (No, don't worry - no new news on that front at this time, and no rumblings about any such thing, for once, although I always have to wonder every time the end of a fiscal quarter is approaching.) He just cracks me up in a very dark way because I totally relate to the long-term psychological damage.

The A-D acquires the GV Union
Thoughts on layoffs from the farewell column written by outgoing Union editor Don Rogers: "Alluding to business decisions of course is a way of distancing between the personal and the professional. The two intertwine far more than we like to admit. Identities and egos rise and are undone in our working lives. Sadly, people kill themselves over this.
"Losing a job is hard stuff. Someone has judged you, however analytically to their needs, and decided something fundamental about you. I know from a career making such evaluations. It’s not personal, true, but it can’t help but be taken personally."

In Duolingo, I'm on Unit 2, City 2, studying French, and I finally learned a sentence that I can use in my life way more often than I care to: Je dois travailler aujourd'hui. (Translation: I have to work today.) Le sigh!!

For a few years I was the page designer for the Los Banos Enterprise, and during that time some co-workers would call me "the queen of Los Banos." 😂 I haven't designed those pages in a long time (as of this week it has been a year since the EKCS designers in New Delhi took over page design duties for the McClatchy Pub Center team), but today it was my privilege to do the content planning for the final edition of the Enterprise, which is being retired as of Friday. Another community newspaper gone. I haven't posted much about my job here in a while. The last time I posted a job update, I think I was still expecting to have my employment contract with McClatchy run out at the end of December. (I and dozens of my team members were given notice in March 2021 that we would be losing our jobs in small groups staggered over the summer months. Then a few of us, including me, were offered contract extensions; my extension was supposed to carry me through December.) And then, a couple of weeks before my contract ran out, I was fortunate enough for my team leaders to offer to rehire me to a full-time position, which I accepted. And that's where things stand for me as of right now. I do have more thoughts to share on the subject, but for tonight, let's just pause to salute the end of an era with the demise of the Los Banos newspaper. Update: Turns out that the Enterprise is being sold rather than retired, and McClatchy produced it for a couple extra weeks after what we were initially told would be its last day with us.
