Okay, first, read this person’s analysis because HOLY SHIT they’ve got some very good points and I really think they’re on to something. Wanted to add my own thoughts to it, but you need to read the thesis first so my thoughts are below the cut.
Something not mentioned in @ariaste’s amazing thesis is WHY does the Metatron need to convince Aziraphale to take the job. (If Ari already touched on it, my bad! I devoured it so fast I might have missed it)
During their conversation, Metatron says “you’re a leader, you’re honest, you don’t just tell people what they want to hear.”
Babygirl, Aziraphale is many things. He’s kind, intelligent, compassionate, but he is not a leader. He is not the one who came up with the Arrangement, he went with it because Crowley made it a good sell. He didn’t come up with the plan to watch over the Antichrist, Crowley did and he nervously followed Crowley’s lead. He rarely even takes the lead on lunch, Crowley always has to “tempt” him. Aziraphale’s been in his “following orders” era since Before the Beginning.
He is not honest with himself or with Heaven. He lied to God’s metaphorical face about his sword, he lied on most of his reports back to HQ, he has lied to himself about what is and isn’t “good” on a regular basis because he doesn’t want to believe that Heaven’s orders, orders that he has faithfully and doggedly followed (most of the time), are equally as bad if not worse than Hell’s schemes. If he accepts it, then he has to come to terms with his complacency in a broken system.
And telling people what they want to hear? That is our angel’s ✨specialty.✨ It’s practically what he’s designed for considering his Heavenly rank. He survived working for Heaven by deferring to the Archangels, being a yes man when needed, falling in line when asked. For the most part, he’s a very good soldier, but not a very good leader.
And that’s why the Metatron wants Aziraphale so badly. He doesn’t need another Archangel. He needs a figurehead who will politely and nervously sign his approval on executive orders if he’s told it’s “for the Great Plan.” The Metatron thinks Aziraphale is a soft, pliable creature that he can mold to his will.
I think the theory that Aziraphale is under Metatron’s influence is even more evident when Metatron tells him this is all for “the Great Plan,” because, yes Aziraphale is kind, good, and compassionate, but he’s also a fussy little pedant who would have immediately corrected Metatron by asking, “Do you mean the Ineffable Plan?” The same way he challenged Gabriel during the Apocawasn’t.
Season 2 was the set-up for a grand magic trick, indeed. I can’t wait for the reveal. :)
The Magic Trick You Didn’t See: Being An Analysis of Good Omens Season 2
(or: Neil Gaiman, Your Brain is Gorgeous But I Have Cracked Your Sneaky Little Code And Have You Dead To Rights*) (*Maybe)
***
Soooooo I just spent the last 48 hours having a BREATHTAKING GALAXY BRAIN EPIPHANY about Good Omens Season 2 and feverishly writing a fuckin16,000 word essay about the incredible magic trick that @neil-gaiman pulled off.
Yes, it’s long, but I PROMISE your brains will explode. Do you want to know how magic works? Do you want to know what Metatron’s deal is (I’m like 99% sure of this and it’s EXTREMELY FUCKING GOOD)? Do you want to know about the Mystery of the Vanishing Eccles Cakes and the big fat beautiful clue I found in the opening credits? Do you go through the whole inventory of Chekov’s Firearm & Heavy Artillery Discount Warehouse?
Here is the essay, go read it: https://docs.google.com/document/d/193IXS11XN46lziHRb6eUpM17yK0BQkRqke1Wh64A_e0/ When ur done u can tell me I’m an insane crackpot, and u know what, i won’t even be offended
In case you don’t know whether you want to bother reading the whole enormous thing on google docs, I’ve put the first couple sections of it under the cut. JUST TRUST ME OKAY, HEAR ME OUT, THIS IS VERY EXTREMELY COOL, NEIL IS GOOD AT HIS JOB–

Rise of the TMNT is good because it’s dumbass but it’s sincere in its dumbassery. Never once does it try to make you think it’s anything more than a silly and fun action cartoon. The creators looked at the base concepts of the TMNT franchise (a franchise that was started by two indie comic writers dicking around and coming up with the stupidest, edgiest shit they could think of) and went “Hey this franchise is 30+ years old, let’s mix it up a bit. Our reboot is gonna be dumb. It’s gonna be dumb and fun and the characters will be chaotic teenagers and Leonardo will dab 5 times” and 100% stuck to that WHILE ALSO being genuine and heartfelt and really cool and having smart humor to balance out the Dumb. I never felt talked down to and the writing can actually be subtle. The crew really went “if we don’t portray accurate and healthy sibling dynamics we’ll DIE” and “if every single one of our fight scenes doesn’t slap we’ll DIE” and I just want to commend them for their efforts. They were so right in doing all of this.

One time I was DMing a campaign where the players walked into that tavern every campaign has and one of the patrons was a Mindflayer wearing a very bad human disguise who insisted his name was Johnald Humanman. And they were just like "Oh, okay. Well, that's his business" and didn't interact with Johnald Humanman at all.

I think a lot about how we as a culture have turned “forever” into the only acceptable definition of success.
Like… if you open a coffee shop and run it for a while and it makes you happy but then stuff gets too expensive and stressful and you want to do something else so you close it, it’s a “failed” business. If you write a book or two, then decide that you don’t actually want to keep doing that, you’re a “failed” writer. If you marry someone, and that marriage is good for a while, and then stops working and you get divorced, it’s a “failed” marriage.
The only acceptable “win condition” is “you keep doing that thing forever”. A friendship that lasts for a few years but then its time is done and you move on is considered less valuable or not a “real” friendship. A hobby that you do for a while and then are done with is a “phase” - or, alternatively, a “pity” that you don’t do that thing any more. A fandom is “dying” because people have had a lot of fun with it but are now moving on to other things.
I just think that something can be good, and also end, and that thing was still good. And it’s okay to be sad that it ended, too. But the idea that anything that ends is automatically less than this hypothetical eternal state of success… I don’t think that’s doing us any good at all.
