Here on Earth, earthquakes and underwater volcanic eruptions may displace enough ocean water to create a tsunami, a drumbeat of waves reaching huge heights as they approach land. Now, because theyโ€™re all created under the same physical laws, we see similarities in patterns, structures, and events across the cosmos. Computer simulations helping astronomers understand the effects of supermassive black holes on the material around them showed that gas even dozens of light-years away can form structures that resemble tsunamis we see on Earth. These effects seem to occur just within the distance where the supermassive black hole loses its grip on surrounding matter. If you like like this then follow us @dogelien and share with your friends and family. #blackhole #nasa #tsunami #cosmos #cosmotics #space #lightyear #computerscience #supermassive #physics #astrophysics #astronomer #earth #grip #matter #dogelien #follow_us #learnfrominstagram #instagram #instadaily https://www.instagram.com/p/CRiMbUrBDdY/?utm_medium=tumblr

Nope, this isnโ€™t Mars. This spectacular red and orange landscape is part of our home planet. ๐ŸŒ Sand dunes, ancient rocks, a solar power plant, and the ๐‘ถ๐’“๐’‚๐’๐’ˆ๐’† ๐‘น๐’Š๐’—๐’†๐’“ stand out in this image of the southern ๐‘ฒ๐’‚๐’๐’‚๐’‰๐’‚๐’“๐’Š ๐‘ซ๐’†๐’”๐’†๐’“๐’• taken by a camera system on the International Space Station. The dark line of South Africaโ€™s largest river, the ๐‘ถ๐’“๐’‚๐’๐’ˆ๐’†, winds across farm-covered floodplains toward the Atlantic Ocean. Populations are small in this desert region. The small farming town of ๐‘ฎ๐’“๐’๐’ƒ๐’๐’†๐’“๐’”๐’‰๐’๐’๐’‘ is barely visible compared to the local main roads, which show up as white lines etched across the landscape. The strong orange color in this image is mostly due to geologically young dunes (only a few million years old) in what is known locally as the ๐‘ซ๐’–๐’Š๐’๐’†๐’—๐’†๐’๐’… (dune country). Poking up through the sands are sinuous hills made up of very ancient, dark-toned rocks. These rocks were folded and faulted around one billion years ago by mountain-building forces similar to those currently raising the ๐‘ฏ๐’Š๐’Ž๐’‚๐’๐’‚๐’š๐’‚๐’”. The ancient mountains were later planed off by erosion over millions of years to form the dune-covered plains and low hills we see today. Alongside one of the main roads lies a small, bright rectangular shape: This is the ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’Œ๐’‘๐’๐’๐’“๐’• ๐’”๐’๐’๐’‚๐’“ ๐’‘๐’๐’˜๐’†๐’“ ๐’‘๐’๐’‚๐’๐’•. It was constructed specifically to take advantage of the high number of sunny days in the ๐‘ฒ๐’‚๐’๐’‚๐’‰๐’‚๐’“๐’Š ๐‘ซ๐’†๐’”๐’†๐’“๐’•. The plant includes nearly 240,000 mirrors covering 0.65 square kilometers (about 0.25 square miles). Unlike the photovoltaic solar panels at many traditional installations, this power plant uses mirrors to focus the Sunโ€™s energy on a large salt-filled storage tank (too small to see in this image). The focused sunlight melts the salt, which has a high heat storage capacity. This heat in turn drives steam turbines that can generate power long after sunset. This renewable-energy plant came online in 2015. Three more testing milestones have been completed for #NASAWebb! The worldโ€™s most complex and powerful space telescope is making significant progress in preparations for its launch and upcoming million mile journey. The tower is a pipe structure that helps Webb maintain operating temperatures by separating its cold optics from its warm spacecraft bus. Fully extended, the tower reaches 10 ft in length! Recently tested for the last time, it is now lowered & locked into place for launch. In the second image, a Ball Aerospace technician (Larkin Carey) carefully removes Webbโ€™s "lens cap," which has kept the observatoryโ€™s instruments clean, contaminant-free, and protected from any stray light. With launch approaching, removing this cover gives engineers additional freedom in packing up the rest of the observatory. Webbโ€™s tennis court-sized sunshield is supported by its pallet structures, as shown in the third image. Now that Webbโ€™s lens cap has been removed, engineers were free to continue the process of folding these pallets up into their final configuration for launch. Wait you may think it's a potato ๐Ÿฅ”, but it's not it. It's one of the two moons of Mars, named Phobos. This is an image of Phobos, the largest of Mars two raggedy moons, as seen by the @uahirise camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft. Taken from 6,800 kilometers (4.225 miles) above the sur face, the image shows a pockmarked celestial body with a large impact basin called Stickney crater. The grooves seen along its side could be the result of tidal forces - the mutual gravitational pull of the planet and the moon Scientists have calculated that tiny Phobos is nearing Mars at a rate of 18 meters (6 feet) every century meaning it will either crash into the planet in 50 million years or break up into a ring of debris Phobos was discovered in 1877 by American astronomer Asaph Hall, and one popular theory is that it might be a captured asteroid. In Greek mythology Phobos and Deimos are the twin sons of Ares (Mars in Roman mythology). This image of ๐‘ฌ๐’“๐’๐’‚๐’๐’ˆ๐’†๐’“ ๐’„๐’“๐’‚๐’•๐’†๐’“ near the Moon's north pole was captured by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Only the upper rims of the crater, which measures about 10 kilometers wide, ever receive sunlight. Permanently shadowed Moon craters are a great place to look for water ice deposits that could someday support permanent bases on the Moon NASA's upcoming Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover, or ๐•๐ˆ๐๐„๐‘ will land on the Moon's south pole in late 2023. The golf-cart-sized rover will explore the south pole for at least 100 days venturing into frigid permanently shadowed regions to study and map water ice deposits. Light levels on Pluto in the middle of the day are equivalent to light levels on Earth at twilight. Should you ever find yourself standing on Pluto (40 times farther from the Sun than the Earth is), the lighting conditions will feel quite familiar! What a beautiful snap of Pluto, right? This natural-color image of Pluto results from refined calibration of data gathered by New Horizons color Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) The processing creates images that would approximate the colors that the human eye would perceive, bringing them closer to true color than the images released near the encounter This image was taken as New Horizons zipped toward Pluto and its moons on 14 July 2015, from a range of 35,445 kilometers. This single color MVIC scan includes no data from other New Horizons imagers or instruments added. The striking features on Pluto are clearly visible, including the bright expanse of Pluto's icy nitrogen-and-methane rich heart. Sputnik Planitia.
