a lot of exalted 2e artifacts, the magic items of the setting/system, were the games equivalent of +1 magic swords

one of the changes made in the change to 3e was getting rid of that, in 3e all the artifacts have semi-unique power trees, you usually get the first power just for being attuned to the artifact, but the rest you have to buy with XP

it has a bit of a downside of adding to the homebrew load for the game to function, but it really helps give the effect that each and every artifact in a unique and storied magic item

Oh that sounds pretty cool! I should have a look at newer editions of Exalted, I've only looked at 1e and 2e!
