I personally wouldn't care if you were in the fandom or not if you wrote another fic, I would be thrilled! I've been here for 10 years and fandom has changed so much and I don't really feel a part of it anymore but I still follow several of my favorite authors because the fics here are just so good!

Hi darling. Ok... let’s see what I can suggest. I honestly have so many so I would suggest that you also look through my Exes to Lovers fic rec, as there will be a lot there that fits this idea, too. 

I won’t let you forget by graceling_in_a_suit / @graceling-in-a-suit (T, 7K) I love the writing in this one. It’s one of those fics that has that kind of melancholic, dreamy feel to it that I really enjoy. Plus, it has a “no matter what, I would find you in any lifetime” vibe. So good. 

It’s Been So Long by @elsi-bee (T, 31K) This fic was really charming. I always love Louis and Gemma as friends, and the “in love with my best friend’s brother” trope rarely lets me down. This one was sweet and endearing while also being very moving. I loved the tender way they treated each other, even when they were pining, and the flashbacks were the perfect way to fill in the blanks.

want it all the time, need it every day by swallowsmateforlife (E, 6K) I read this one way back in 2015, so I don’t recall a lot of details except that it was sweet and sexy. May be time for a re-read!

Mine Would Be You by @crinkle-eyed-boo​ (E, 115K) Beautifully written, flawed characters and an emotionally engaging and ANGSTY plot. Super hot smut that made me cry like a fool. Banter, OT5 friendship, and the grittiness of New York as a backdrop. Loved this one.

we can only look behind by @hereforlou​ (M, 66K) Absolutely gorgeous writing. Childhood friends to lovers fic that made me cry multiple times (Yes, I was a mess). This one had such realistic expression of emotions and such three-dimensional characterizations. Just loved it. (Link is to a download)

For As Long As I Can Remember (It's Been December) by green_feelings / @greenfeelings​ (E, 128K) This author always delivers on the angst, so yes…I cried. I loved the sense of the inevitable with these two characters — as in real life, they’re just meant to be. But first they’ll go through hell.

Such a good read. And even though the tags said there was a happy ending (which there is), I still cried buckets.

all my love was down in a frozen ground by navigator (E, 16K) This is one of those quiet, soft fics with a bit of angst and a lot of internal monologue and gentle conversations, and there’s something so touching about it.

Can I lay by your side? by Star_Henderson / @tommosgun​ (E, 60K) There are a few of this author’s fics that I’ve read multiple times. This is one of them. It’s just sexy and soft and a little heartbreaking. But a happy ending, of course!

no pressure, no diamonds by karamelised (E, 43K) This fic is SO good -- really fun, original story, great characterizations, crazy hot smut...plus, there’s a prequel and a sequel so….what are you waiting for?

The Dead of July by whimsicule (M, 117K) Even if you know nothing about MCU, this fic is a must read. Lots of angst, great writing, and what feels like very well-handled depiction of PTSD and everything else that comes along with kidnapping, torture, and amnesia. Good times. But there’s a happy ending and a 110K second part (with more angst and mental health struggles) that I haven’t read yet, but I’ve heard good reviews of!

Empty Skies by green_feelings / @greenfeelings (E, 134K) I just started re-reading this the other day and it holds up so well. This author is always a pleasure to read and their fics are so well-plotted and the characters are nicely fleshed out. I loved Perrie as Harry’s bestie, the bitterness and angst is PAINFUL, and the ending feels well-earned.

once bitten and twice shy by @pinkcords (M, 19K) First of all, for a first fic in this fandom, I thought this author really did a nice job with their characterizations. I especially liked the way they captured Harry’s anger and humiliation and stubbornness. There’s a beefy epilogue as well which I haven’t had a chance to read!

taking tips and getting stoned by alison (M, 24K) Slightly OOC, but I really enjoyed the realistic approach to the storyline and having a fic about life not turning out the way you thought it might, and the opportunity for second chances.

deleted your number (so i can't call you) by tofiveohfive / @sunflowrsix​ I think this author does such a great job with writing realistically about breakups and the emotions that are involved. Things aren’t just suddenly solved -- there’s still anger and hurt and a realization that better communication is needed. It’s just very refreshing to read. And of course, I cried.

don’t tell the gods (we left a mess) by @bottomlinsons (E, 72K) This is a different take on the fake relationship trope, which makes it particularly fun. Plus, this author really knows how to write snappy dialogue and good build up to the reveal. Link is to a download.

Howls Like A Beast (You Flower, You Feast) by @indiaalphawhiskey​ (E, 17K) This author’s writing is poetic without being too precious, descriptive in a way that paints a gorgeous portrait without piling on unimportant detail, and their smut is sexy af. I love all of their fics, but this is a personal favorite because it combines so many things I love (supernatural elements, Versailles, Larry, and smut…what more could you want? LOL).

Black with Autumn Rain by Whimsicule (T, 93K) This writer is a favorite. If you like intense, creative stories, with complex characters and tight dialogue, you should read all of their fics. This one has the flavor of a Daphne du Maurier novel – dark, creepy, and moodily romantic. Plus a supernatural edge. It’s so good.

like a timebomb ticking by @infinitelymint (E, 32K) Read the tags on this one because it was written prior to the personal tragedies that have happened IRL to Louis. But if you can handle that, this is a really well written exes to lovers fic with a whole lot of angst and hurt/comfort.

The Second Hand Unwinds by kingsofeverything (FullOnLarrie) / @kingsofeverything​ (E, 52K) Also known as “the NASA fic”. This one has such a unique and well thought-out storyline. Add in time travel, exes to lovers, ot5, and excellent pacing….you’ve got yourself a great fic!

Some Clear Jellyfish Don't Sting by gloria_andrews / @gloriaandrews​ (E, 32K) This one is a such a beautiful portrayal of summer love with some pining thrown in to make the resolution that much sweeter. And yes, it made me teary.

What Am I Gonna Say When I See You by runaway_train / @runaway-train-works​ (E, 7K) This one is just sweet and lovely and such a pleasure to read. I love the way they reunite and stray apart and reunite and make it right. Good stuff.

The End Should Be A Good One by bananasandboots (M, 43K) I really like the way this author writes the complexity of emotions that come with heartbreak and reconciliation in this one. It’s really moving and, oh what a surprise, it made me cry!

Lightning Strikes Twice by @dinosaursmate​ (E, 106K) It’s not often that I read a 100+K fic multiple times, but this one is worth it. It’s one of my favorites from this author, and a favorite all around. It’s an epic love story spanning decades and massive life changes. It’s sexy and well-written, and so touching, and so fulfilling in many ways. Famous!Harry, groupie!Louis (also bookstore owner Louis, but that’s later).

This one I’ve read, but so long ago that I don’t have a clear memory except that I liked it:

teenage dreams in a teenage circus by orphan_account (E, 50K)

The three of them have always been a unit, seamlessly pulling pranks to get revenge and keep life interesting. The last few months of sixth form bring about a lot of changes, however. Gemma refuses to let anything stop her from getting into her top-pick uni, Perrie second-guesses what makes her special, and Louis breaks the most common of friend codes: he falls for his best mate’s little brother. A coming-of-age tale rife with sneaking around, late-night vandalism, first times, successes, and jealousy.

Thank you! Oh lord don’t tell me anyone hasn’t written it, I might be tempted to write a oneshot 😂 Returning to hometown au’s sound good or anything with a small town vibe. I can’t believe that it took me nearly four months after returning to my university from the holiday break to miss my small southern town I grew up in but here we are.

Well, I definitely wouldn’t say no to someone writing a one shot! It sounds like a great premise. 😉Funny how home looks different when you leave for a while. As for returning to your hometown fics…these are all very different, but all have that as an element. 

Black With Autumn Rain by Whimsicule (T, 93K) This writer is a favorite. If you like intense, creative stories, with complex characters and tight dialogue, you should read all of their fics. This one has the flavor of a Daphne du Maurier novel – dark, creepy, and moodily romantic. Plus a supernatural edge. It’s so good.

won’t you wear my watermark by @bottomlinsons (E, 90K) I’m still in the midst of reading this one, but I’m loving it so far (plus, I love this author’s fics in general), so I’m recommending it. Always great writing and character development – this one is a Regency era spin on a soulmate fic. And one in which Harry returns home after the death of his father.

Singing To Tiny Dancer by BriaMaria / @briannamarguerite (E, 23K) This author is always a hit for me. They just know how to write a good, solid story. This one has a famous/not famous angle, plus a nice dose of tears. It’s also the first of a 4-part series.

Somewhere Where You’re There by metal_eye / @metal-eye (M, 4K) This is actually a return to where they spent their summers, and really you should read the first part first, but this author writes so beautifully, I’m always so happy when I can recommend them! 

I haven’t read this one, but lots of people have told me they love it so I’m adding it.
