my new Destiel theory: Dean couldn't say I love you not because of his own denial of the fact but because Chuck refused to write it like Chuck's weird psycho-sexual obsession with Dean made him so twisted that rather than allow his character to follow a natural arc that the character itself wanted to follow (see s8 rewrite of "I love you" into "I need you"), he just kept dodging it through increasingly ridiculous and pathetic ploys. he couldn't bear to watch Dean choose free will (Cas) over his heavenly ordained plan, so he just kept fucking with their relationship (see every divorce/widower arc, and all the other will they/won't they shit). really puts Cas's "What's real? We are." into context. like they are, in fact, the only real thing, despite Chuck's attempts to dismantle their relationship.

John tells Sam the mission comes before everything as Dean lies, barely conscious, bleeding in the back seat. Dean's not devastated by this. He's not angry. He's resigned. He braces himself to be a good soldier, because after all isn't that what he's for? A willing sacrifice for the mission.

But then Sam says "no sir, not everything," and glances at his brother in the rear-view mirror. It's the first time someone tells Dean he's more than canon fodder.

Years later, the angels demand that Castiel kill Dean to prove his loyalty, for the greater good. Dean looks into Cas's face and braces himself, like a good soldier. That's what he's for, right? That's what he's always been for. A willing sacrifice for the mission.

But then Cas meets Dean's eyes and says "I can't" and gives up his army to save Dean's life. Once again, Dean is reminded that he matters. That he is not expendable.

I think people forget the biggest difference in how Jensen acts toward Supernatural compared to Jared is that Jared got a complete story arc for his character, as shitty as that ending may have been for him. Sam retired from the hunter life, had a wife and a family, and grew old in peace and relative happiness. Dean died with his storyline unfinished. 15x18 clearly set him up to respond to Castiel's confession, and he wasn't able to. Dean dies on a hunt young, miserable, and alone - exactly how he thought he'd go out when he was 26. That's not a satisfying conclusion; it's a slap in the face. And Jensen knows that. That's why he can't let Supernatural go; it's not finished for him yet.

Why do this??? Why show us that Dean wanted out?? That Dean thought about quitting hunting. Retiring. That Dean wanted to LIVE. When you intended from the get go to impale him on a rusty rebar. Because "it was always gonna end like this." Because "it was supposed to end like this, right?" Because Dean „HAD TO DIE?????” What do you mean Dean would never stop hunting when you’ve literally showed us he wanted to???? What do you mean Dean wanted to die hunting when he literally said he DIDN'T??

the thing about destiel that hits so hard for me is that cas is thee number one dean understander. no one in dean’s life has EVER gotten dean the way that cas does. no one has ever even tried to. dean takes care of everyone he loves. but cas…cas is the only one who takes care of dean back
