dropping him off at the airport for deployment is always the worst. you’re a bat signal for judgey looks and unwanted eyes, a comical picture the two of you make— a bulky, giant man trying to console his small, weeping girlfriend. he doesn’t know how you’re not used to it by now, this has been his job for as long as you’ve known him, and you must’ve done this a hundred times over, but like a pavlovian response, your plump bottom lip starts to tremble, pretty eyes watering with tears.

“no, no, no.” it’s a warning, too little too late. heavy sobs rack your chest, the dam in you breaking as tears flood your cheeks, arms wrapping around his large frame. even though he’s grown to expect it, he still gets uncomfortable at the sudden draw of attention to the two of you, self conscious as he engulfs you into his burly arms and attempts to murmur soothing words in your ear. he’s had better luck defusing bombs than calming you down when you’re all worked up.

you make him promise he won’t die at war, and he obliges on the one condition that you pull yourself together. the feeling of his leathery thumb pads wiping at your tears, his big hands nearly covering your entire face when he cradles it, is enough to sate you, at least temporarily… “be strong for me, häschen. no more tears, ja? or i’ll off myself.”
