An unfinished elf sketch from a few years ago. Looking at it again makes me want to complete the piece and figure out what her story is.

I wasn’t near my Cintiq today, so I busted out my old Intuos 3 Wacom tablet for a warm-up sketch. The lines are a little wobbly, but I’m kinda perturbed by how much more I like this than so many of the drawings I’ve done on my Cintiq, haha. It’s always fun to try limited color palettes. Sometimes restricting yourself to only 3 options can yield great results.

Some art I did for the lovely singer, Mary Joyner a few years ago. Hope you’re doing well, Mary!
I’ve been going through all my past art folders, trying to find and share a lot of pieces that I never posted previously. It’s a fun trip down memory lane, but I hope it also gives me whatever inspiration I need to continue moving forward with newer drawings.

The Armored Beaver. Though often well protected by its ironclad flattened spikey quillettes, this creature is unfortunately the target of poachers around the world, all after its invariably unique coat. The armored beaver’s pelt is seen as a sought-after alternative to chainmail with semi mithril-esque durability that can deflect even the heaviest of crossbow fire and potentially defend against minor cases of dragon’s breath. Unlike their unarmored cousins, this species lives in arid climates and has no use for a flat bracing tail weight while dam-building or sawing down trees, so their tails have become more diminutive with time to provide fewer weak points. Their buck teeth remain, however, as the larger teethed specimens are often perceived as more ideal to potential mates. They must still gnaw regularly though to avoid the dental overgrowth that is often so harmful to rodents. They can be ferocious when cornered and are known in some areas of the world as Beavermadillos.

Which of these do you most prefer?
Another design I came up with while playing around in Photoshop. Feels like a logo or emblem for something, but whatever that something is I’m unsure. Maybe a shield? I like the first one the most, though I enjoy a lot of the other color options too. I’ll get back to some regular drawings soon, but I thought doing a few pieces like this would be fun for a bit.

Which color scheme do you think works best here?
I’ve been doing a few simple design pieces just for fun. Remember that you can convey a lot with an image, even if you have little drawing ability. Composition and color say so much, whether the art is abstract or not. This design was done using only the selection and fill tools in Photoshop. One could also try vectors, but it was quicker for me this way. I played around with some adjustment layers and inversions to create the different palettes. I'm sort of tempted to make a more detailed piece using the limited colors of one of these variations... or if anyone else out there wants to give it a go, I'd love to see that as well. Color is extremely important to me. It is one of the main things I put the most thought into for every piece of art I make. Even black and white or grayscale are extremely valid “coloring” choices with a lot of meaning (I know this would technically be called “value,” but I’m referring to coloring in a more general sense here). How one chooses to color anything can change absolutely everything about its interpretation, which is pretty wonderful, I think. Maybe this is why I feel so naked posting sketches and line art. Something about what I’m making doesn’t feel complete to me until it has a strongly chosen palette behind it.

It's been a warm week, so here are some warm colors. Also, I realized after making this that this is the same palette and look as the IG logo. Gosh dern it subconscious! Why must you always trick me?
