electricity is magic?
i just read about semiconductors for two days and i still don't understand how they don't just run out. i get the movement of electron-hole pairs goes in one direction, and somehow limits the depletion zone with the electric field? and then electricity is generated. cool story, but does it just go on forever? when the n-type side exchanges enough electrons for holes, how does it keep going? or does it go back to normal when the panel is not receiving photons?? and i guess the electricity just comes from the electric field? is it really enough to provide energy and run the inverter to make that energy usable? if it gets too hot, does the semiconductor stop working? are these just questions nobody knows or won't admit they don't know? when did wild poodles roam the earth???

haven't been feeling too hot so i am wrapping up this year just updating my wallpaper to december. this month i was really tired and wasn't able to finish the kaggle survey competition i wanted to do, but i learned a lot of things about python that i had forgotten or never knew. i started using Obsidian to keep a code journal and track what i had found, or what code worked. i found that most of the time i was wishing for either more functionality or better documentation for seaborn, but those challenges helped me discover other things (like the dython package) that could fill in some of the blanks. and i felt like i could have used scipy more? but it was a storytelling challenge, not a modelling challenge, so maybe that makes sense. i'm interested to see who wins this year, and i have a better idea of how i would go about it next year.

so this year i moved from fiverr to upwork. i like the way they do the categories, but it's a little harder to figure out what makes a good pitch, even after watching their videos on ~the perfect proposal~. but since it's easier navigating the job categories, it's easier to find jobs to practice on; even if i'm not hired, i can still refresh my old skills and learn some new ones.
for this job, the client had coordinates and days, and wanted the sunset time attached to the dataframe. i was able to do it in about an hour, give or take the time i was reading the documentation for the suntime package. i went with a list because posts on stackoverflow said it's a lot faster than filling a dataframe -- as an analyst we don't consider O(n) as much as computer scientists, but the client said this code potentially would be used for a data set of billions of rows. sometimes, when you get to these big data sets, you start to notice the drag on the processing time. the computer definitely notices.

first html from scratch
for years i've messed around with other people's html/css code for editing my blog layout (first on livejournal and now on tumblr) and i found i had a need to write something from scratch for the first time. on notion i have a page for the books i have checked out of the library, and for whatever reason i wanted the date to appear above the calendar. indify has a clock but it doesn’t display the whole date, so i thought maybe i could make my own.
mostly i looked at the examples on w3schools, specifically the web dev guide, and that gave me an idea for some script commands that would do what i wanted:
this one showed how to display time
and this one showed how to interact with elements in the page
really i wanted just the date but i got drawn in by the full timestamp, and then i thought it'd be cool to have it update automatically. so i found this tutorial but from the examples i saw at w3 i thought probably it could be done with less code and it ~worked~
at first i tried using their code more closely
function timestamp() { const display = document.getElementById("time"); const update = new Date().toLocaleString(); display.textContent = update; } setInterval(timestamp, 1000);
but then instead i decided just to use the setInterval line and see if it would work with the w3 code
function freshtime() { document.getElementById("time").innerHTML = Date().toLocaleString(); } setInterval(freshtime, 1000);
anyway i was really excited when i saw ~it worked~! in the meantime i was testing out github and decided to try it as a github page and it worked and i was able to embed it into notion wooo~~ but i definitely need to adjust the style so it shows up right but that was enough work for tonight.
remember to take a break! new wallpaper coming soon for spooky month))

it's officially fall - mystery flavor mtn dew is out!
this is my first attempt at a nier automata-style wallpaper, which i've been wanting to do for a while. i like the simplicity, but i'm hoping to evolve it over time and add more elements from the menu screen.
