Yaknow when Pain was attacking konoha and Kakashi saved Iruka just in the nick of time and how people see that as a shippy moment but i think it's more Kakashi purposely seeking out Iruka so he can make sure Naruto's remaining father figure survives.

I mean, Kakashi didn't know how to comfort Naruto after Jiraiya's death but he saw how hard it hit Naruto. He asked Shikamaru to talk to Naruto iirc.

Kakashi must know how important Iruka is to Naruto. And, since kakashi wasn't able to help Naruto with his grief, he didn't want him to lose his 1st father figure, especially so soon after Jiraiya.

Kakashi considers Naruto has already having surpassed him. He doesn't think Naruto needs him or that he can actually help Naruto anymore. Kakashi doesn't think he can provide emotional support, but he knows Iruka can, which is what Naruto is going to need.

It makes perfect sense to Kakashi to put himself between Iruka and danger. Naruto needs Iruka and everyone needs Naruto. Kakashi is expendable (in his mind). So in the middle of konoha being attacked he seeks out Iruka to protect him specifically. For his student's sake.

this sequence doesn’t need any embellishment, but i still think about it constantly.  

i’m thinking about yamato, who, for the first time here, uses his jutsu for his own interests, against the people who trained him to use it only for theirs.

thinking about the fact that kakashi’s arms are still cut up and bleeding from wounds yamato gave him, and yet here he is, breaking law after law, risking his entire life to save someone who two hours ago was trying his best to assassinate him.

thinking about the fact that kakashi comes to the foundation against the hokage’s orders, that he breaks into this facility knowing full well that it amounts to treason, that he deliberately orders yugao away before he does anything illegal, not just so she can get help, but so she can’t be implicated in the choice he’s made.  

thinking about the fact that self-preservation and concern about potential future consequences are things that don’t even register in kakashi’s mind, not when there’s an immediate ethical choice to be made.  in the future, he might be arrested for what he’s about to do.  he might be executed, even.  but all the nebulous, potential future consequences in the world can’t affect his decision, because right now, if he lets danzo do something to yamato, he’s done something wrong.

[it’s like what he says many years later in the manga: to know what is right and choose to ignore it is the act of a coward.]

thinking about how badly danzo wants kakashi dead.  kakashi is the kid he couldn’t ensnare, the one he tried to exploit by preying on the pain of minato’s death but whose spirit was ultimately too strong to be made into another of danzo’s lapdogs.  kakashi foiled all of danzo’s plans three years ago and now he’s foiling all of them again; he can’t be intimidated, he can’t be broken or brought to heel, even lost and hurting and alone as he is - at the most critical moments, he still always does what’s right, not what he’s told.  nothing danzo does can change that.  there’s something guiding kakashi that danzo can’t touch, some kind of moral magnetic north inside him that can’t be cowed by any of danzo’s usual machinations.  kakashi will not be led.  that look he gives danzo when the smoke clears - it’s all fight.  that’s somebody who’s prepared to die for a principle, and danzo doesn’t know what to do with people like that.  he has no power over them.

[thinking, incidentally, about the fact that danzo must have hated kakashi’s father, and that he must hate kakashi even more, because kakashi is the version of sakumo who refuses to recant and repeatedly decides not to die, despite how badly he wishes he could or thinks he should.]

thinking about kakashi, outnumbered and crouched there with yamato knocked to the ground behind him, preparing to fight his way through every single person who shows up to stop them from reaching the exit, including danzo himself.

thinking about how kakashi is doing all this for someone he barely knows, who tried to kill him, who thought that death was a well-deserved punishment and who fully expected to be forsaken, forgotten, and abandoned to his fate.

thinking about what that must feel like for yamato, who never in a thousand years believed that anyone would come for him.

Headcannon

Kakashi loves to read to his SO. Not just his Icha Icha books, but anything they want. Having them cuddled up in his arms safe and sound, and just being able to talk to them through the book, is an amazing feeling of comfort for him

i think kakashi loves romance novels. like, not just icha icha, but honest-to-goodness historical romance stories without any porn in them, too.

and i think he would especially love to snuggle up and read one of those truly romantic books with his partner.

i think he likes to lie back on the couch with his s/o between his legs, their back pressed against his chest and eyes closed as they listen to him read on a lazy afternoon.

kakashi holds the book open with one hand and runs the other gently up and down his partner's arm, nuzzling his nose against their hair as he reads, enjoying the closeness; not only of their physical bodies, but the intimacy of reading love stories to another person.

he's such a private man, that sharing one of his favorite past times with another is an extreme show of trust and love. someone who doesn't love kakashi might judge him for his tastes in literature; might scoff at the fact that he prefers gentle romance to "serious" compositions.

but he knows his partner would never, that they relish listening to the smooth cadence of his voice as he reads as much as he enjoys the reading. sometimes, after he reads a particularly heartfelt confession of love, they will ask him to read it again.

he always does.

and kakashi doesn't mind that his partner often eventually falls asleep, even when it happens at an especially good part of the story.

he'll note the page and set the book aside as he wraps both arms around his partner's shoulders and closes his eyes, letting the soft sound of their breathing lull him to sleep as well.

You often feel like you need to take responsibility for those around you and to protect them. You struggle to show your love through other means, so you take that task seriously. Your friends know they can always count on you no matter what. However that leads you to be mistrustful of others’ actions before getting to know them, usually assuming the worst of them. On the exterior you might seem cold, calculating and distant. But those close to you know that’s far from the truth, you just have a particular way of demonstrating it. When it comes to love, you’ll probably try to deny it at first, bury it before it grows more than it should. Mostly because you’re so accustomed to being the strong one, that allowing yourself to be vulnerable for once scares you. But it’s exhausting to constantly keep that guard up, sometimes you need to take a rest and allow yourself to be the one being taken care of. Don’t forget that.
