The first annual Justin Long Film Festival is live for this weekend, February 10th and 11th! Score your tickets now and show up early to get good seats! No appearance from Justin this year, but who knows what the future holds.
Plain text programming and more info below the cut:
Longheads of all kinds will have something to look forward to this weekend. Each day starts with a comedy, leading into a romantic comedy, and rounding the evening out with something a little scary. At the end of day one you may also enjoy a palate cleanser in the form of iconic Justin Long as the Personification of a Mac Computer Ad Campaign. Highly recommend sticking around for that sleeper hit from the mid 2000s.
Schedule:
Saturday Feb. 10
10:00 am – Waiting (1hr 33)
12:00 pm – Literally, Right Before Aaron (1hr 42)
2:00 pm – I have to go to work (6hr)
8:30 pm – Jeepers Creepers (1hr 30)
10:30 pm – PC Mac Commercials (38min)
Sunday Feb. 11
10:00 am – Accepted (1hr 33)
12:00 pm – He’s just not that into you (2hr 9)
3:00 pm – Programming break (4hr)
7:00 pm – House of Darkness (1hr 28)
9:00 pm – Tusk (1hr 41)
**This is my curatorial debut so be nice to me. Scheduling errors and event mishaps are expected.

Ah fuck it, I lied! I won't be migrating to pillowfort completely. I just do not have the brainpower to maintain two things at once. I would still encourage people to sign up and at the very least snag your current username because I *really* think Automattic has a good chance of ruining tumblr or shuttering it because they can't make money off of it.
For now it's just going to be crossposting when I remember.

i think kids online should really get back to making internetsonas instead of whatever fuckshit this is with putting their entire real faces, names, ages, and such everywhere. you're not gonna realize how nice internet privacy is until you dont have it anymore and no chance at getting it back. make up a guy and a name and just be that online. make up conflicting details about your completely made up backstory. make a fursona or something

Bookmarks: More Useful Than You Think (FireFox Edition)
RSS feeds are great, but more often than not I don't really want to subscribe to a website, just save the link. This is where bookmarks come in. You're probably already using them for some things, but I tend to see bookmarks treated as messy and impractical.
This is only as true as you make it! There are really great built in tools that allow bookmarks to be organized and easy to access. Better yet, they don't impact performance! You can have a ridiculous amount of bookmarks. This is basic stuff, but I've seen a lot of people not know it's there so:
If your bookmarks look like a digital landfill and you want them to look like this ⬇
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You're probably used to navigating bookmarks like this, or directly from your toolbar. It works, but it's annoying.
There's a whole bookmarks sidebar built into FireFox for a cleaner, more useful interface!
Tumblr media
This guy! Opens and closes with the click of an icon. If you don't already have it, add it like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just drag it wherever you want it on your toolbar. (And change anything else you want while you're in there.)
Now that you can open the sidebar, you can start organizing your bookmarks however you like. It's as easy as managing files on your computer. Right click for new folder then drag and drop bb.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Folder before and after organizing. Took about 30 seconds.
If the sidebar isn't ~advanced~ enough for you, you'll be pleased to know there's a whole other UI you can access for even easier editing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
0o0 !! love this thing. You'll notice the bookmark I highlighted has a vague ass title. Directory of what? You can quickly edit titles and tags here to make them easier to navigate. The name and the url are separate, so you can title them however you want. You can also export(backup) bookmarks to an html or json file that you store locally. Something you should do every once in a while just in case. It means you can also share these with other people, or transfer between different browsers.
Tumblr media
You can also edit bookmarks on the fly by just right clicking them.
Why complain about the lack of resources on the internet when you can start hoarding them in a clean and orderly fashion?

Shilling for Pillowfort:
Hey, what's that? It's a new site that is basically designed to be improved tumblr, and got damn I think it is.
It has a ton of cool (and more importantly, USEFUL features) that are exactly the kinds of things longtime tumblr users have been aching for.
But it's not just a tumblr clone, it borrows from other sites (like amino) to create something interesting and new. The developers have spent a lot of time picking the best bits of different platforms and crafting something that I find very promising.
But there's a catch. Nobody is using it 😂 It's dead as fuck, which is going to deter most people who use this stuff for... you know. The social media.
Howmever. If you're stubborn and way too invested in the health of the internet at large, this is a project that's worth your time. Even if you don't stay using it forever, it would be a great thing to have another option.
Reddit and twitter fall, they come here. Tumblr falls... where do we go? This is one answer to that question. So if you're annoyed by tumblr or just in favor of having options, you should check it out and start drumming up some activity over there. Don't be scared off by the wait list, no one's signing up. I got my link in like 10 minutes.
NOW GET IN THERE BEFORE ALL THE GOOD USERNAMES ARE GONE

Did you move your blog somewhere else crunch?
Sort of!
I'm hesitant to call it official for now, but I've made a Pillowfort account under the same name. I'm not happy with the way tumblr has been operating. I'll spare us all the rant here, but you get it. WordPress' priorities have been made very clear.
I will still use this account, but I've decided that Proper New Crunch StuffTM will go on Pillowfort for now. My interests aren't in brand loyalty, but in using the platform that it makes the most sense to use.
Right now it's unclear what that is, but tumblr ain't it.
Unfortunately! Pillowfort is a ghost town 😂 I want to change that, which is part of why I'm doing this. Even if it doesn't end up being The Thing for me, I'd like to see it grow. It's good for everyone if we have options other than mainstream social media.
Right now though, you're not missing much. I've not been up to anything postworthy lately (tired 😖) but when that changes I'll let you know!

Hello, please send me the forums and online resources you've used. I want to make a big list.
Criteria: You've found it helpful at some point. It's relatively specialized. Any category. "Online resource" is purposely vague. Magazines, wikis, blogs, etc. They don't have to be obscure.

There are Other Things on The Internet Than Reddit
Here's a Lego forum
Here's one for CDs
Here's one for Bionicle
Tech Support and Repair
The blog I used to set up a virtual machine
Anime Anime Manga
Like, anything technical
These are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head and is nowhere near an exhaustive list of just the forums that I have personally used to find valuable information. This isn't even including wikis, independent archives, blogs, magazines, etc etc etc.
Reddit actually isn't the only place on the internet to get information it was just the easiest :)))) The entire rest of the internet didn't die because you stopped using it. :)))
I've never found it anywhere near as helpful as any of these other sources, largely because of the low barrier for entry, lack of specialization, and dogshit culture. People who spend all their time on sites you've never heard of actually know more about the shit their website is dedicated to.

"The internet’s best resources are almost universally volunteer run and donation based, like Wikipedia and The Internet Archive. Every time a great resource is accidentally created by a for-profit company, it is eventually destroyed, like Flickr and Google Reader. Reddit could be what Usenet was supposed to be, a hub of internet-wide discussion on every topic imaginable, if it wasn’t also a private company forced to come up with a credible plan to make hosting discussions sound in any way like a profitable venture.
We are living through the end of the useful internet. The future is informed discussion behind locked doors, in Discords and private fora, with the public-facing web increasingly filled with detritus generated by LLMs, bearing only a stylistic resemblance to useful information. Finding unbiased and independent product reviews, expert tech support, and all manner of helpful advice will now resemble the process by which one now searches for illegal sports streams or pirated journal articles. The decades of real human conversation hosted at places like Reddit will prove useful training material for the mindless bots and deceptive marketers that replace it."

hey look I made a thing. I had a whole spiel but tumblr ate my post or whatever. It was a project for school that I put together in unity from a bunch of assets I found/modified.
It's not much of a game, and it's pretty janky, but I learned a lot and I'm really happy with it as a first attempt.
Zip Of Current Windows Build if you want to do some walking around
It was an intro to unity, so the scope of the project was just to create a navigable 3D environment. It was intended to be really basic, but I'm not good at following instructions so I spent a lot of time messing around with textures, lighting, and a shader I found to create a cohesive atmosphere. It was a lot of fun.
The work I did was really just putting it all together. Besides screwing around with a first person controller that I ended up replacing anyway, I didn't do any coding. All of the textures and models were grabbed from wherever I could find them online and used as is or crunched down to fit the theme. Except those crispy crosswalks. I made those ;)
There's no real gameplay right now, but perhaps some day. I don't have the energy to work on it rn, and I'd have to completely restart anyway. Knowing what I know now, it would be much better (and faster) and I'd need to replace the stolen assets anyway. I'm really not sure what kind of game it would be! Feel free to leave ideas if you don't mind me using them later.

bonus video of what it looked like before I got all the lighting and effects worked out.
