Academic wins can look like:
Getting an A on your test
Organizing a study group
Studying daily for an hour or two
Having perfect attendance
Getting that grant/scholarship
Getting ahead in all your classes
Academic wins can also look like:
Actually being able to focus in class for once
Getting enough sleep and food
Fighting through your depression and finishing a single assignment
Turning in a paper a little late
Taking a mental health day
Getting a C on a test you thought you failed
Academic wins are personal. They're different for everyone and depend on you, your goals, your mental and physical health, and your overall well-being. For someone working full time, getting that C and showing up to class once a week is a win and something they should be proud of! For someone who has everything financially covered and can devote plenty of time, getting the deans list should be something they rightfully should brag about! Achievements are Achievements regardless. Don't let anyone take your wins from you

I didn’t go to class today and it was the best decision I’ve made in a while.
For starters TAKE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH DAYS WHEN U NEED THEM! please it’s so important!
Anyways to the point of my post: My leg has been bothering me the past couple days and nothing seemed to fix it and i had resigned on going to the doctor after class today but I decided I would ditch class and sleep in.
And sleep in i did. I slept for 12 hours!!! AND my leg feels completely fine. I clearly have not been getting enough sleep.
THE POINT IS DONT FEEL BAD FOR NOT GOING TO CLASS IF STAYING HOME/SLEEPING IN IS WHATS BEST FOR YOU!!!!!

Random writing tips that my history professor just told during class that are actually helpful
Download all your sources or print them so you can turn off your wifi
Give your phone to someone
Just. WRITE. Writing is analysing, you’ll get more ideas as you write. It doesn’t need to be perfect, for now you can just blurt out words and ideas randomly. You can fix it later.
Create a skeleton/structure before writing.
Stop before you get exhausted. It’s best to stop writing when you still have some energy and inspiration left, this will also motivate you to get started again next time.
Make a to do list
Work in bite sizes. Even if it’s not much, as long as you put some ideas on paper or do some editing.
Simple language =/= boring language, simple language = clear language.
Own your words. If they are not your words, state this clearly in the text, not just in the footnotes.
STOP BEFORE YOU GET EXHAUSTED. Listing it again because it’s easily one of the best tips a teacher has ever given me.

10 steps to revise for an exam (and my recommended timeline)
Quickly go over the material that will be covered on the exam. Put each topic into a category of "Good" "Okay" and "Bad" based on your understanding of that topic. (Day 0 - Before revising)
Look at steps 3-10 and put them into a study plan that you can follow. This will keep you on track and ensure you cover everything. (Day 0 - Before revising)
First, start with your "Okay" list. Briefly revise each topic, focusing on definitions, formulas, and general concepts. At this point, you should be ensuring that you know the information, not focusing on exam practice. I like using flashcards for this step to ensure I actually know the information (Day 1)
Now, do the same for your "Good" list. (Day 1 or 2)
Once you've done steps 2 and 3, you're ready to practice! If your professor has given you practice/review questions, use those. You can also find great questions in your textbook or from past assignments. (Day 2)
Now, focus on your "Bad" category. Do a much more thorough review of the information in this category, almost as if you're learning it for the first time. This is a step where flashcards may be super helpful, especially if you need to power through a lot of memorization work (Day 3).
This is where you practice your "Bad" category. Make sure to do multiple questions for each topic to ensure that you're prepared for anything that comes your way (Day 4).
Revisit all the information you've studied over this process, and do more practice problems on the topics you're struggling with the most. (Day 5)
Take a deep breath, get some sleep, and eat a good meal! (Exam day!)
Take your exam!

It's okay to wear the same thing twice - even in a row <3
General rules of thumb for laundry:
Socks, underwear - 1 wear before washing
Shirts that touch you - 2 wears before washing, 1 if you got sweaty
Shirts that don't touch you (i.e. worn over something else) - 3-4 wears before washing, less if you got sweaty, more if it's a jacket
Pants - honestly, just throw them in when you do laundry and don't let them get gross
And bonus - if you go to a school that uses an M/W/F and T/TH schedule, nobody has to know you're re-wearing outfits like that (not that it matters)

achievable ways that i'm sustainable
The first way I make these achievable is by far the most important: Don't make anything a hard rule - just a goal and a habit.
I purchase most of my clothes secondhand. They aren't all from thrift stores either - there are tons of vintage, resale, secondhand, etc. stores out there! I also make a point to not be too strict about this. It's okay to buy new clothes when it makes sense to!
I rarely replace things unless they are broken or no longer functional. Obviously, I make exceptions sometimes, but I try to use what I have until it can't be used anymore. A great example of this is that I wanted to get new bathmats - so I put my old ones elsewhere in the apartment rather than getting rid of them.
Before I donate or throw away usable things, I try to give them away, sell them, or repurpose them. Most places that get donations are incredibly overrun by the volume of donations and much of what's donating ends up in the garbage or in a mountain of clothing somewhere, so I try to leave donation as a last resort. I offer things to friends and family, sell them online, or try to find another use for them before I resort to donation. Also, be sure to research the organizations you donate to - some of them are no good at all! It's also a good idea to do your research and try to donate things to places I know they'll get used rather than somewhere like Goodwill.
I clean my own water rather than buying water bottles. Where I live, tap water isn't drinkable. However, rather than spending valuable money on wasteful bottles of water, I made a one-time purchase for appropriately heavy-duty water filters and/or a way to boil water before drinking it. If that's not achievable for you, it's always cheaper and less wasteful to buy your water in bulk.
I eat at home or at local restaurants as much as possible. Of course, fast food is unavoidable sometimes. But I find that it's fairly easy to eat at home or at a local restaurant once you get into the groove of it - not all home-cooked meals are complicated or time-consuming, and most local restaurants can do take-out very easily (and often, pretty cheaply)!
I bring my own bags not only to the grocery store, but everywhere I go. I keep my wallet and epi-pens in a reasonably large tote bag, so when I grab something at the convenience store or run into a small shop, I don't generally need to get a bag. When it comes to the grocery store, I always take my own bags - usually one refrigerator bag and one regular bag - and also bring my net produce bags (from Ikea, about $3 USD each). This helps me avoid unnecessary plastic use and keep trash out of my local environment.
Since I live in a large city, I drive as little as possible. By that, I mean that I essentially only drive when I commute to school, as my school is not in the same city and is not currently accessible by public transportation. Walking and biking are great ways to get around and stay healthy, and public transportation is a fantastic option when it's too far to walk or bike. I'd encourage everyone to try out walking, biking, and transit - no matter where you live! It might surprise you how achievable, cutting down on car usage is.

I haven’t taken Chemistry in ages, but I’ll do my best!
Take good notes, especially for diagrams and math! Example problems are probably the most important thing you can take notes on because they're the hardest to look up later.
Don't fall behind! Chemistry is hard, and the workload can get pretty heavy, so it will be difficult to catch back up if you get behind.
Don't be afraid to ask questions! Like I said before, chemistry is hard. There's no shame in asking questions - you're probably not the only person with the question. Ask in class, go to office hours, email the professor!
Pay attention to the breakdown of conceptual vs. math questions for exams. You can usually ask before the exam what that breakdown might be like, and that will give you a direction on where to focus your energy when studying.
Do lots of practice problems when you're studying! I know they aren't fun to do and take time, but your exam grades will thank you.
I'm sure there's a lot more tips, but I hope what I was able to come up with helps!

how to stay cool in inhumane temperatures
Since it's already gotten above 41°C (105°F) where I live in the subtropics and is going to keep getting hotter and hotter through the summer, here are some simple, easy-to-do ideas to keep cool during the summer. A lot of people will already know this, but for people who have moved out from home recently, didn't grow up somewhere hot, or are in a variety of other situations, this list may be helpful:
Don't run hot appliances. If it's hot out, you can air-dry clothes - you don't need to run the dryer. I try not to use my oven in the summer, and I usually try to only use the stove once a day (if possible). I also always (even in winter, but especially in summer) wash my clothes in cold water. It's better for them, and it doesn't require heating water when it's already hot.
If you have a grill or a way to cook outside, that may be a good option. It keeps the heat generated by cooking outside your home. Otherwise, keep the vent on while you're using your indoor stove to vent the hot air out as much as possible.
In my experience, if you have an air-con, it's probably best to keep your windows closed to keep the cool air in. Otherwise, if you don't have an air-con, open your windows and set up a cross-breeze.
If you have an air-con and are worried about cost, it saves a lot of money to keep it hot in your house during the day and comfortably cool at night. In my experience, turning the air-con on about 2 hours before I go to sleep is enough to cool it down to a more comfortable temperature.
Fans are your best friend. My ceiling fan is on 24/7, and I have several other fans I use as needed. These can also be used in your cross-breeze.
You can put a bowl of ice in front of a fan to blow cold air through your home if necessary.
If the sun is making it hot inside your home, close your blinds and curtains. If you need to keep your windows open for ventilation, close just the blinds/curtains necessary to block the brightest/hottest part of the sunlight.
If you're looking for a new place, pay attention to the amount of summer sun it will get. If you're in the Northern Hemisphere, south-facing windows typically get direct sun through the entire day, east- and west-facing windows get it about half the day, and north-facing windows get no direct sun. If you're in the Southern Hemisphere, reverse the north- and south-facing windows.
If you live somewhere tropical, subtropical, or just humid, and you can afford to, consider investing in a dehumidifier. Only do this if you have an air-con and can keep your windows closed. If your windows are open, there's no point because you'd just be trying to dehumidify the outdoors.
Depending on where you are, it's likely a lot cooler at night and in the early morning. Opening your windows (even with an air-con) at night may help cool your home, and taking advantage of the cooler early morning air will allow you to get outside safely and comfortably.
Even if you still like taking hot showers in the heat, rinse in really cold water when you finish. You'll start from being cool and not from being hot - in the heat, it's easier to warm up than cool down.
If you get too hot, putting ice or cold water on the back of your neck is one of the best ways to cool down. A cold shower can also help.
Staying hydrated is extra important in the heat! Make sure to drink a lot of water and potentially include some electrolyte drinks in the mix. Sodas, coffees, teas, energy drinks, alcohol, etc. dehydrate you so make sure to pair them with water if you still want to drink them.
Adjust your clothing to the weather. Materials like linen and cotton will help keep you cool, as will loose-fitting clothing.
Eat cool and light foods. This sounds obvious, but so many foods are either hot or really heavy and we don't necessarily think about that before choosing our meals.
Of course, sleeping with no blanket (i.e. just a sheet or nothing at all) is the coolest option. However, if you're like me and can't sleep without the weight of a blanket, here are some ideas for how to keep your bedding heat-friendly and sleep-friendly.
Having your body touching a top sheet (rather than a blanket) is much cooler. Even if you sleep under "only" a blanket, using a top sheet under the blanket will help keep you cooler.
When buying bedding, research fabrics. Some fabrics are really hot and some keep you cool. My bedding is linen, and I find that it does a great job keeping me cool. In the (extremely mild and short) winter we have here, I just add a microfiber blanket under my linen cover to keep me warmer.
My cover is a linen duvet cover from IKEA with a really thin duvet inside. IKEA duvets show their temperature rating on the packaging, so I chose one that wouldn't keep me warm at all, and it works pretty well for me, even in the heat. However, I do have a somewhat functional air-con, so this may not apply the same as it would without an air-con.
Sometimes, if I get too hot, I adjust my cover to only cover my lower torso. For me, this provides enough weight to sleep but keeps me a lot cooler.
Sleeping with no pillow also helps keep you cooler, if you can manage the discomfort of getting used to it.
Relevance to my blog: Being too hot affects my mental health, especially because it makes it hard for me to sleep. I'm pretty sure this a common experience, so I'm hopeful that these tips may help someone.

Today (at coffee shop): almost all of my to-do list from the past 4 days in like 2 hours
Too bad it isn't free! But I did finish my punch card today, so next time will be free!

I was talking about being afraid of people leaving me behind because I'm too sick, and my boyfriend just looked at me and said: "It's my choice to be your boyfriend. It's your friends choice to be your friends. You don't have to understand it, but you have to respect our choice. Don't try to make the decision of whether you're worthy of people on their behalf because that's not your decision to make." I think that's an important thing to remember. That whether we're worthy of someone's time and effort is something others can decide for themselves regardless of whether or not we agree with them. There's a lot of peace in realizing that literally all you have to do is accept the love other people choose to throw your way. That you aren't the one who gets to determine that you aren't worthy of their love. That other people can choose to love you regardless of how you feel about yourself - and that you can learn to respect their choice even though you're feeling unworthy.

some quick tips for browser search engines (ie google, bing, duckduckgo) that folks might not know:
exact phrases : if you put your search in quotes “like this” then it’ll look for that exact phrase, those words in that order. this is how people find sources from screenshots of text.
ex. “a far green country under a swift sunrise” will search for results that contain the exact phrase “a far green country under a swift sunrise”.
combining phrases : AND, OR, and NOT
ex. “cookie recipe" AND “chocolate chip” will search for results that contain both of those exact phrases
ex. “cookie recipe” NOT “peanut butter” will search for results that have the exact phrase “cookie recipe” and ignore all results that include the phrase “peanut butter”

friendly reminder that there is nothing wrong with trying to make your life easier. nobody ever said that you have to brush your teeth standing up, or that you have to rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. if you do not have the energy or the mental capacity to do something, there is nothing wrong with making it easier in every way, if that is what it takes to get it done. run the dishwasher three times to get all the dishes clean if you have to!! brush your teeth sitting on the floor or on a chair!! take a shower sitting down or take a bath (whichever is less work to you)!! fold your laundry while sitting down and watching tv!! there is nothing wrong with trying to make your life easier.
