i wrote this the day before season four started airing and i feel the need to bring it back now because the level of vindication i have in this analysis is unparalleled lmaoooo

I actually need to ask someone who watches 9-1-1 this but does anyone else gets sometimes annoyed at Oliver's acting when playing Buck?

I like his character but Oliver makes it hard on occasions, I feel like he overacts a little at times when doing some of Buck's little quirks and it annoys me.

Am I alone in this?

I’m a BIT of a sucker for the cocky idiot who’s a bit of a weirdgirl trope so im probably wildly biased lol. but honestly i’ve not really had any issues with his acting? like it’s soap drama style acting for sure, and that styles not for everyone, but i think all of them do that and that it’s on purpose.

i posted a few times while i was watching it for the first time that i genuinely found buck fucking insufferable for a good while at first which was like, 100% the intention of the writers, he’s clearly meant to come off as having a really annoying dickhead facade. but as time went on i read what you’re reading as overacting as like, a purposeful (if obvious) attempt to show how much buck genuinely struggles to regulate that kind of thing after a lifetime of being emotionally ignored/chasing cheap thrills/ being alone in a transient way that’s meant he’s never really been close enough to many people over enough time for them to actually see him be upset or otherwise emotional.

I mean i also read buck as having adhd so this may just be me moulding things into that reading. but, say, i read the way he can be seemingly over enthusiastic about traditionally odd or childlike things as a guy who never really dampened his hyperfixations because he was either with parents who ignored him anyway, with his sister who didn’t make it seem weird, or never in a place/close enough to people for long enough for them to notice it. and like, he does that kind of thing most around Eddie, and Eddie is sure as shit not about to tell him he’s weird for it.

He as a character has MASSIVE self worth issues that I think are exacerbated by adhd/rsd, starting with perceived rejection from his parents, and then as an adult he became a serial one night stand guy because if there’s one thing he’s always been praised for it’s his looks - and hell, if that’s all he gives people time to see about him, then they can’t reject him for any of the things he’s actually terrified are wrong with him. So like, as we see him genuinely settle into a life with people he has to let actually know him, i really think the choice to have buck often seemingly wildly over react to perceived rejection (like from Bobby as an accepted father figure), or be seemingly WAY too quick to throw himself into stupid situations that he should’ve learned not to do by now (they can’t reject you if they need you / the fear of losing them outweighs your understanding of your own affects on someone else’s life - which instead of selfless can actually come off to others as wildly selfish and wilfully ignorant / the fact he’s really quick to do idiot stuff because he thinks being a firefighter is the only thing he’s useful for, so he may as well do the stupid shit because if he succeeds then he IS good at it and IS needed and if he fails then well fuck he’s not good for anything else anyway) is less of him being weirdly written/acted and is more a case of them trying to purposely portray a “personality type” that in reality is just a guy with adhd who has literally not once ever had any support. like his dickhead facade was a coat he wore outside, but he was always so alone in his personal life that he never even learned to keep it on.
