I finally got around to watching the next episode. My life kinda went to hell after the last post so I didn't feel up to doing much of anything but I'm kinda back on the right track again so here goes.

Shadow and Bone s2 episode 2. I had some technical difficulties with the first 40 minutes of the episodes and was too annoyed to type out anything but here are my thoughts on the remaining episode 🙈

I don't remember them trekking through half flooded caves in search of the Sea Whip.

Don't tell me the thing Alina killed with a light beam through the head was the Sea Whip because if it was... Underwhelming is too mild a term for it. It was tiny. And weird. And not gorgeous at all.

Ohhh Pekka pulling a fast one on everyone. I don't remember this bit happening either... I really gotta go back and reread the books

Inej is definitely a badass though

Jesper figuring out where he met Wylan before while they're being shot at. Lmao. Also Wylan is too precious. Every time he comes on screen, I wanna squish his cheeks.

Shadow & Bone Season 2. Here we go!

Right off the bat. I do like the show version of Mal a lot more than the book version but I'm still more excited to see what they'll be doing with the Crows side of the story. Also I don't recall if Alina n Mal posed as tourists from Ketterdam in the books. I thought they were pretending to be a young farming couple or something? I dunno. My memory is fuzzy though I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle the changes

As always, I'm still more invested in the Crows side of things but they're doing fun things with all the crossovers between the ganga and stuff so I'm also kinda interested in seeing Alina's side and how much it'll change from the books.

She teleported! Or switched places with Captain Marvel? *flails*

So others have mentioned that Kamala has been collecting different parts of her superhero identity from different people in her life. The bangle from her Nani, the blue shirt from Waleed, the scarf from Kareem, the mask from Bruno, and the lightning bolt symbol from her broken necklace.

But you know who she hasn't gotten anything from? Nakia!!

I bet you anything Nakia will help complete Kamala's outfit. She hasn't heard back from her since the wedding and we saw Kamala scrolling through her unanswered texts on the plane. NAKIA is the last piece she needs in order to become the best version of herself!

Everything about the partition and najma and aisha and Kamala's mom finally finding out and Kamran getting powers and just... Everything!

Finally got to watch the new episode of Ms Marvel, prepare thyself for my fawning-over-rant.

5th episode spoilers ahead!!!

1. This was basically a historic episode. (Wordplay here hah). WE GOT TO KNOW SO MUCH.

2. India's history was shown so well. The riots, the hate, the divide-and-rule, the trauma!!! I'm so glad Marvel didn't sugarcoat it, and displayed actual events.

3. I FELT Kamala in that scene where she walks around the station hopeless and in despair. The tears the shouts the urgency the chaos the hope the well-wishers - I was so close to crying </3 </3

4. A very minor thing but I love how they use 'British Occupied India' and not 'British India' like yeahhhh it was India. And wrongly occupied. It wasn't British, no sahab ji.

5. Aisha, my love, she found a new home outside of her origin and I'm just so sjdkdksjsjsjs for her <33333

6. FAWAD KHAN CAME UP AND NOT JUST AS A PICTURE CAMEO HOW COOL. I WAS SO HAPPY I LOVE HIS MOVIES.

7. The desi actors speaking hindi/urdu was more wholesome and connecting than them speaking English. It's a universal fact.

8. Najma had her whole character arc aaah I went from ugh-najma to ohmygod-wtf-najma to SHE-DID-NOT-JUST-NAJMA within 20 minutes i-

"There is only 1 way. I can close it. Kamran-" *heart cracks*

9. And now Kamran had powers yeeeesssss!!!

10. Kareem better return in the next episode, I like that guy (*_*)

11. LASTLY, yes ofcourse Muneeba being a desi mom MUST KNOW about Night Light or its just....not desi. "Spyware for parents" is a desi mom's blood.

Muneeba and Sana and Aisha and Kamala and basically the whole Khan family supremacy. 👑

that every part of ms marvel’s costume has been given such deep meaning instead of coming together like the usual generic superhero outfit shows how much care the writers are giving kamala’s story:

bangle: what set off kamala’s journey is much more than just another family heirloom. it has such a powerful and tragic backstory that is not only connected to other dimensions but embodies the love through generations of her family.

mask: that kamala’s mask was given to her by bruno who was the first person she told about her powers and who excepted her unconditionally and even tried to help her understand them.

kurta colors: so after choosing the completely wrong outfit weatherwise in pakistan, kamala later changes into a blue and red shalwar/kurta set. yes it’s captain marvel’s colors but it also appears to be the same colors as hasan nana was wearing when he first meets aisha. and so we have the prototype for her costume as having a different shape than the usual jumpsuit.

scarf: kamala’s iconic red scarf (duputta if you will 🤗 no shalwar is complete without it, besharam) given to her by kareem/red dagger not only as a reminder of what they’ve been through in pakistan but also a memory of waleed, what red dagger represents, and what she has learned about her family origin from them.

lightning symbol: this is by far and away my favorite origin story. that ms marvel’s lightning bolt iconic symbol comes from her broken necklace spelling out her name. ms marvel is kamala and kamala is ms. marvel. so cleverly done.

red chucks: and finally we have kamala’s signature red converse sneakers because she is a teenager after all!

i just love all these details!

Ms Marvel episode 5 let's gooooo!

First off, it's today so Eid Mubarak! Second, I'm so so late in watching this one. I've had to stay off of Tumblr and everywhere else just to avoid spoilers since Wednesday but here we are and here we go. I'm kinda excited to see if my theory from last week is what happens or not 🤞

Also, literal CHILLS as the newscaster mentioned bloody trains arriving at their destination. That used to be one of the most common things my grandparents (both paternal and maternal) used to mention about the partition. People used to leave under the cover of the night to avoid attacks

Spyware for parents. Rotflmao 🤣 also, ugh! Why does she have such a prominent accent. I'm sorry i just can't with her. I'm trying to ignore it, I swear but I can't. They should have just made it a cross-cultural couple and then I'd have had no issues with the accent but i am NOT buying it as the correct accent. I don't think I'll ever stop harping on about this. Ever.

So Kamran got the same powers as Kamala then? Only blue.

I like how cool her mom is about Kamala having powers and super-hero-ing and everything.

Poor Kamran is so out of his element with Bruno. Also his mortified face upon realising he was calling him the wrong name.

Cultural Anatomy: Blue Spirit Mask

I’ve noticed many ATLA fans comparing Zuko’s Blue Spirit mask to a Japanese Noh mask, but Bryke have actually confirmed (in the artbook) that it’s based off of a Chinese Nuo mask. Nuo Opera is one of the most popular folk operas in southern China. Its most distinguishing feature is the use of ferocious-looking masks with the costumes. The opera is a religious performance intrinsic to the practice of Nuoism, a type of Chinese folk religion. The purpose of Nuo opera is to drive away disease and negative influences/spirits, as well as to petition for blessings from the gods.

Zuko’s Nuo mask depicts “The Dragon King”, a Chinese water and weather god. That Zuko chooses to wear this mask when he’s being sneaky and underhanded speaks to how clever he can be when he’s not being hotheaded.

First, he knows that dressing up as a dragon associated with water will confuse anyone trying to identify the Blue Spirit. Dragons are a symbol of the Fire Nation, but blue and water are obviously Water Tribe coding. Is this person from the Fire Nation or Water Tribe? A person of mixed heritage, maybe?

Second, a consistent piece of symbolism within the Avatar-verse is that blue dragons are cruel and cutthroat. Sozin’s animal companion was a blue dragon, Azulon’s name means Blue Dragon, and Azula is portrayed as a blue dragon in Zuko’s fever dream. When Zuko chooses to behave in a dishonorable way (from his POV), he choose to don the face of a blue dragon.

Third, the purpose of Nuo opera is to drive away negative influences and petition for blessings. When Zuko first dons the Blue Spirit persona, he’s kidnapping the Avatar away from Zhao. If you were a superstitious FN citizen— which is not an unreasonable thing to be in the Avatar-verse— you might think that the Blue Spirit is some sort of otherworldly guardian to the Avatar. He’s exorcising Zhao’s influence and has been blessed by the Avatar with good fortune. Think about how intimidating a reputation the Blue Spirit must have thanks to the events of that night. Is it any wonder why Zuko chooses to don the mask again in the Earth Kingdom?
