🚀 Follow @cosmos.o2o 🌌 Approach and landing tests: Spanning from early February to late October 1977, the first prototype space shuttle orbiter Enterprise (atop the Boeing 747 SCA) was flown on many flights to test out the shuttle’s aerodynamics on gilding, runway approach and landing. Test pilots activated a jettison system (which was installed temporarily) in the 747 to release the manned Enterprise over the Californian desert near Edwards air base, on five occasions to perfect shuttle reentry and landing maneuvers, and help engineers refine the design. ✈️ #spaceshuttle #spaceshuttleenterprise #enterprise #approachandlandingtest #approach #runway #boeing747 #1977 #edwardsairforcebase #aerodynamics #aviation #aviationphotography (at NASA) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPZf4gvDYGI/?utm_medium=tumblr

Falcon 9 has just completed it's 100th successful flight in a row, making it a very reliable rocket! Actually, SpaceX lost one payload in that timeframe, but not during a launch. How is that possible you might ask? Well, during a static fire test in 2016, the Falcon 9 booster blew up, together with the Amos-6 payload in it's fairings. Maybe you remember the footage. But even if we count this as a failed LAUNCH, Falcon 9 has still had 90 successful missions in a row since then. (Of course, sometimes the booster didn't land, but the definition of a successful mission is that the payload is in earth orbit) 🚀Follow @cosmos.o2o to never miss important space events again! The Great Orion Nebula (Messier 42, NGC 1970) in the constellation of Orion is the closest region of massive star formation to earth, and is so bright that is is visible to the naked eye. It is south of the three easily recognizable belt stars, and is the middle of the three sword stars that is clearly “fuzzy” in appearance, especially using binoculars. The nebula is 24 light years across and is estimated to contain the mass of 2,000 suns. Orion has a young open cluster at its brightest part containing 4 obvious stars referred to as the Trapezium, of which two are visual double stars, making a total of six. The coloration of Orion is an interplay of magenta coming from ionized hydrogen (red H-alpha and some blue H-beta), and blue/green or teal from doubly ionized oxygen (OIII). This coloration and detail was brought out from many long exposures using H-a and OIII narrowband filters. The nebula is part of a much larger complex known as the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, which includes familiar astrophotography objects, such as Barnard’s Loop, M43 (shown in the above image as the tear-shaped object just north of the Trapezium), the Horsehead Nebula, M78 and the Flame Nebula. The Hubble Space Telescope found over 100 areas where planetary systems are forming around young stars, so the Orion Nebula is clearly a star and planet nursery. Also known as 30 Doradus or NGC 2070, the Tarantula Nebula owes its name to the arrangement of bright patches that somewhat resemble the legs of a tarantula. It measures nearly 1000 light-years across. Its proximity, the favourable inclination of the Large Magellanic Cloud, and the absence of intervening dust make the Tarantula Nebula one of the best laboratories in which to study the formation of stars, in particular massive stars. This nebula has an exceptionally high concentration of massive stars, often referred to as super star clusters. The giant Tarantula Nebula with its numerous substructures is the perfect laboratory in which to resolve this puzzle as in it massive stars can be found both as members of clusters and in isolation. With the help of Hubble, astronomers try to find out whether the isolated stars visible in the nebula truly formed alone or just moved away from their stellar siblings. However, such a study is not an easy task; young stars, before they are fully formed especially massive ones look very similar to dense clumps of dust. Hubble has observed the Tarantula Nebula and its substructures in the past — always being interested in the formation and evolution of stars. Credit: NASA, ESA, Digitized Sky Survey 2. Did you know that SpaceX and Boeing once flew on one mission together? Now we know that they're enemies in the modern space race, but a few years ago, it looked a bit different at least. Back then, in 2017, SpaceX launched Boeing's X-37B atop a Falcon 9 booster rocket! Nowadays, something like this would be unrealistic!
