the upcurrents swirl around you, and the ocean air is salty in your face. there is nothing else below besides the wide, endless sea, and nothing else to do besides jump, off the cliff and into billows of air and wind. how free it feels! there is sun in your hair and birds about you; gulls and terns and the gleaming white albatross—and you are like them, sky creatures, unfettered to land and legs! you feel the breeze in your fingers turned feathers, and open your mouth to whoop; joy fills you like a balloon, a beacon of sunlight: wild and fantastic and a thing of its own- to fly, to fly! you could never be tired of this, and you drink exhilaration up like sweet spring water. a school of anchovies gleams below you, before they disappear in a flash of silver, and make way for the white seafoam of a breaching whale. you dive closer, and your wings are splashed with water droplets that roll off, easy as dew on grass. wild and wonderful is your delight at this; a whole world is open now, and you will travel all of it! to see it all- your soul quivers, and your heart sings a joyous song.
the deal with the winged nymph was the best you’ve ever made.

snarl what a perfect word to describe      i. something backed into a corner,         eyes crazed         with fear         but glazed with anger         too,         and lips         twisted into         a taunt         a scream         and a sob         all at once.     ii. an ugly flaw,         like a twisted knot of yarn         a tangle of mistakes         and crossings-out         in permanent ink;         or like         a broken sort of person         who took too many lefts         where the map said         to turn right.    iii. a jagged-edged creature         who does not fit into her designated box         neatly,         fights         with sharp teeth         and sharper words         but is stifled         and shoved into one         any-way,         a tangled (abnormality) anomaly         that growls at her         saviors

Earth Day Post 1/?
Notes:
Although this post focuses on birds only, cats also impact small mammal (rodents, rabbits, etc) populations and reptile populations.
I did not talk much about feral cats (a more contentious topic). In the US, the most popular program for feral cats is the Trap Neuter Return (TNR) method, where people catch feral cats or go to a feral cat colony and vaccinate + spay/neuter the cats so they are unable to reproduce and increase the feral cat population. The sterilized + vaccinated cats are then released back to the wild. Theoretically, this method decreases the feral cat population over time as more and more feral cats are unable to reproduce and die peacefully. However, there are pitfalls with TNR, mostly because it takes a lot of time and resources, and vaccinated cats tend to live longer than unvaccinated cats, increasing the time it takes for the population to decrease. In that time, cats keep hunting birds and mammals and continue to decrease populations of native species.
tl;dr: KEEP YOUR PET CATS INDOORS FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN. Additionally, please spay and neuter them so the cat population does not grow.
Reblogs are greatly appreciated!
Image IDs under the cut:
Image IDs: a series of nine square images, all in the same style. All images have a white background with green leaves drawn in the corners. The text on all images is either black or green in a bold serif font, and all text is highlighted in pale orange.
The first image has a silhouette of a cat in the bottom right corner. The cat has its head slightly raised and one paw off the ground, and it appears to be looking at a silhouette of a flying bird to the upper left of it. At the top of the image is the sentence “Outdoor cats have major impacts on bird populations each year.” The words “major impacts” are in green, and the rest of the sentence is in black.
The second image has the text "In the U.S., free range (non-indoor) cats kill an estimated 1.3 to 4 billion birds each year.”. This text is in the same style as the text on the previous image and all subsequent images. Underneath, in smaller, italicized sans serif font, there is another block of text that reads “Source: Nature, The impact of free-ranging domestic cats on wildlife in the United States, published in 2013”. Below that is a sentence in the original text style. The sentence says “Furthermore, cats prey mostly on native birds (67% of the bird prey identified).” At the bottom of the image is a picture of a male eastern bluebird: a small songbird with a blue back and orange and white belly. The bluebird is facing left.
The third image reads: “Additionally, feral island cats have contributed to 33 out of 218 extinctions of global birds, mammals, and reptiles.” Underneath, in smaller, italicized sans serif font, there is another block of text that reads “Source: Global Change Biology, A global review of the impacts of invasive cats on island endangered vertebrates, published in 2011”.
The fourth image reads: “Although most bird deaths are caused by feral cats (69% of deaths), there are steps that regular cat owners can take to reduce bird mortality.” Above this text is a transparent image of a swallow: a bird similar in size to the bluebird, with a glossy dark blue back and an orange-cream belly. The swallow is positioned so that it seems to be sitting on the block of text.
The fifth image reads: “To reduce bird (and wildlife) mortality:” Underneath is a series of bullet points. The bullet points read: “KEEP YOUR CAT INDOORS. Leash cats when outside. Do not abandon unwanted cats in the wild. Feral cats kill many more birds than owned cats.”
The sixth image has one sentence in larger font than the rest of the text on the image. The sentence says “But _____!” Underneath are several bullet points. The first bullet point is indented, and reads “But cats are part of nature!” There are two more bullet points under that, both indented. The first bullet point says: “Domestic cats have no native range. They were spread throughout the continents by humans.” The second bullet point says: “Native birds, mammals, and other wildlife did not have cats as a predator until they were introduced. For most parts of the world, cats are an invasive species.”
The seventh, eighth, and ninth images all have the same structure as the sixth. The first sentence on the seventh image says “But _____!” Underneath are several bullet points. The first bullet point is indented, and reads “But it’s a natural instinct for cats to hunt!” There are two more bullet points under that, both indented. The first bullet point says: “Pet cats do not need to hunt to eat, and shouldn’t be killing excess wildlife.” The second bullet point says: “There are plenty of harmless enrichment activities that you can use to entertain your cat. Letting them decimate the local ecosystem is not one.” The second sentence is in green text.
The eighth image’s text reads: “But ______!” Underneath is the bullet point “But there are other things that kill more birds than cats!”. Under that are three more indented bullet points. The first bullet point reads: “Cats kill 1.3 - 4 billion birds per year in the U.S., with the median estimate at 2.4 billion.” The second bullet point reads: “They are the second leading cause of bird mortality.” The third bullet point reads: “The first leading cause is habitat loss.”
The first sentence at the top of the ninth image says: “But ______!”
Underneath is a bulleted sentence that says: “There is no reason not to keep your cat indoors. Besides killing wildlife:” Under that are three more bullets, all indented. The first reads: “Outdoor cats have a drastically shorter lifespan than indoor cats.” The second bullet says: “Outdoor cats are more likely to contract infectious diseases, attract parasites, and get into car accidents.”. The third and final bullet point says: “keep your cat indoors. please.”

Summer unlocks dusty memories, hidden under childhood and nostalgia. The noon sun is strong and warm, and it makes everything hazy, like how it is in dreams. Sparkling particles of dust float lazily through sunbeams, and a memory floats up with them, fuzzy and soft round the edges, a movie reel of a child lying on the warm carpet and watching dust drift around my old bedroom, years ago. Echoes of days gone flash in front of my eyes; of still afternoons with unmoving air and pervading quietness, of time marked by the dripping of ice cream, of fireflies like glowing lights; bare feet, tickled with grass, peals of laughter, loud smiles—
I fall asleep at the table, the sun beating down on my face, and dream of the last days of innocence.

The Cosmic Dance, con’t.
Part 1
Part 2: Our Sun, Sol
I don’t remember much of the beginning. I didn’t see much of anything at first, only the light of the other stars from within their palaces and halls. They seemed so happy, with all their friends inside. It seemed like only a far-off dream. But eventually, I built a humble ballroom. It didn’t seem much at all, until the first few planets started showing up. They danced around me, swirling, twirling, colliding with each other, finding partners to dance with. Some found one, some found many, and two seemed content dancing by themselves. At last, I was no longer alone.
Of all the planets around me, little Mercury has always been the closest. Speeding around without really caring that he’s dancing by himself. Of course, Venus isn’t much different in that regard, twirling around with her haughty heir. Earth doesn’t seem to take to kindly to her. I’ve heard her whispering to her partner such things, but she’ll come around eventually. Then there’s Mars, dancing among the asteroids. It seems he thinks of Earth as a little sister, always whispering words of encouragement to her.
Let’s not forget of course, friendly Jupiter, elegant Saturn, eccentric Uranus with his sister Neptune, and of course, little Pluto. As they all dance around me, I look off into the distance. I know there will be many more to come and go in time. My ballroom will always be open as long as I am here to watch them dance around me.
