So about the Paris Special...
For the most part I liked it. Maybe because of all the Specials it's the only one not fueled by some Love Square nonsense (the whole cheating in New York/following Adrien thing in Shanghai). It went fairly predictably which isn't necessarily a bad thing and I definitely enjoyed the bookends (the Gabriel OP and Ladybiquity montage) to start and stop on a humorous note.
The Cat Pun Off killed me in the best way. It was terrible, I loved it. And even though they had to be PG Evil, I enjoyed Sassybug and Snark Noir's banter, esPECIALLY when they got paired with Monarch.
The hints of the Evil Love Square - Emodrien having Gorilla buy stuff from Emonette's bakery so he could see her through the window - was pretty cute. Though Emodrien reminded me so much of Felix (down to his ring being an exact copy of Felix's) that I couldn't unsee it lol.
Ladyfly (terrible name but what's the alternative, Butterbug?) can go next to Ladybee in Hall of Unifications I Don't Hate:
Someone worked hella overtime to make Purple and Red work. And with Ladybiquity too.
Hatsune Miku?!
And the Alyanette shippers were fed well.
From what I can see, the main catalyst differences in the new universe seems to be:
The "Supreme" exists, an evil overlord "being" that outlaws cooperation - it's apparently illegal to help each other.
The Supreme holds all the Miraculouses, keeps them secret from the public, and dishes them out to his most "powerful" followers. TS is capable of putting gags on the kwamis and if a follower goes rogue and tries to make a wish with the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses, TS's power prevents it from happening.
Alya must not have gone to Marinette's school. Even though helping is outlawed, Alya's part of the Resistance, so likely she'd have helped Marinette anyway. So logically she didn't go to the school.
When Emilie died from using the Peacock, Gabriel did not hide her death. She's not missing mysteriously, she is flat out dead to the public and Adrien, and Gabriel is choosing to help people to make up for stealing the Miraculous for her in the first place.
Some new lore dropped too:
There are multiple alternative universes
Tikki (and likely all kwamis) exists in all of them simultaneously, living all of the multiverse lives at the same time.
The Miraculouses have a "security" measure to protect young holders because they pull energy from both the kwami and the holder, but this security is overridden when the Miraculouses are used for evil and the tradeoff is that more energy is taken from the holder, slowly killing them. Bad news for Butterfly Lila then.
Anything that a Butterfly user creates, another Butterfly user can undo.
But despite having an overall good time (and yes I do give this the Seal of Approval that you can enjoy watching it), I have my gripes.
For one, I really wish the Special took place IN the Alternate Universe. I mean, they built a whole ass New York and Shanghai with new character models, is it that much harder to reskin the pre-existing Paris and characters? It would've been way more comprehensible if we got to SEE what the Evil Paris looked like, because I'm getting conflicting pictures.
When GoodGabriel (BETTER FLY HAHAHAHAHA!) talks about it, you'd think the city is on fire. He cries because of the way our Paris looks, constantly referencing it as a source of inspiration that HIS world can be better, so HIS city must be in near collapse or something, right? The Opening sequence even suggests as much, and the one shot of the Alt. Paris is Butterfly's basement which is rusted and dusty, like it's in a Post-Apocalypse.
But Emodrien's flashback of Emonette and his rants about his dad spending his time as a fashion designer suggests things are on the surface normal. So which is it? Is it on fire or does it have this facade of normal? Or did it used to be calm and like Our Paris and then The Supreme came into the picture?
When did the Supreme take over? Shadybug's rants about not having a kind and gentle mom and the fact that Gabriel seemingly stole the Peacock for the sake of making Adrien suggests the Supreme has been the ruling being since before the kids were even born. That would explain even further why Chloe became Marinette's catalyst for being evil - in a world where it's literally illegal to help people, Chloe's torment would inevitably be way way worse than it was even in "Derision".
Buuuuut, once again, then how'd we go from the semblance of "normal" seen in Emodrien's flashback to the On Fire Apocalypse in the opening that Gabriel seems to keep referencing back to? Why would Gabriel still be allowed to be a fashion designer and Adrien a model when the world is ended?
I do get that Post-Apocalyptic stories often have this sort of calm New Normal state under the new order or whatever. So maybe that's what they're trying to get out. I'm just saying that Betterfly won't shut up about how Our Paris is so much better on sight, so I have The Confusion. I think I'd just be more satisfied if we REALLY SAW the Alt. Paris.
And this "Supreme" guy feels so lame. Shadybug and Claw Noir had really good through lines with how they got from Point A to Evil, bringing in some 3rd party to be pulling the strings is def the weakest part of the story imo.
I get it, they want their sequel hook for a sequel that's not coming with this ominous Supreme guy still at large and this new Resistance with Not Claw Noir and New Ladybug. If they put the AU in Alt. Paris, then the whole thing could've been contained, with Claw Noir and Shadybug just BEING the villains and then being reformed in the end, which leaves no reason to revisit this world. Which means they can't make more moneeeeeeey.
So, who do you think the Supreme is? Knee Jerk thought was definitely Evil Fu. Like, maybe Marianne was killed in WW2 and Fu really turned on the world for revenge, and all the characters use "he" pronouns when referencing the Supreme. Then @imthepunchlord had a good point that it could be Gimmi, since Betterfly refers to the Supreme as a "being". It would also explain how the Supreme could forcibly prevent Tikki and Plagg from summoning Gimmi to perform the Wish, as well as put gags on the kwamis (which come with a visual symbol over their mouths, unlike when Gabriel forces Nooroo to be quiet).
Then there's always Lila. Depends on the timeline really, again there's no way of knowing how long the Supreme was ruled, but I wouldn't put it past the writers to make her The Being of Supreme Evil. And it wouldn't be the first time that they accidentally messed something up in the translation or retconned, like when Adrien said Ladybug had the same eyes as his mother or when both photographers were called Vincent only for the professional one to later be called Guiseppe.
Actually, I think this Special for SURE has one of these mistakes, because in Shadybug's rant she mentions that Ladybug (Ladyfly at the moment) doesn't have a "boyfriend that thinks she's a total loser", but going by the progression of the rant syncing up with the things Shadybug read in Marinette's diary, I think the original line was supposed to be "a partner that thinks she's a total loser" in reference to Chat Noir vs Claw Noir.
And of course.
The biggest Gripe of all.
The Immediate Downgrade!
