The park wardens had found the carcasses, mostly wolves, stripped to the bones. Poachers, they thought.

They were getting bold this winter.

Setting up cameras, they were hoping to get a clean look at the culprits, something that could help them bring justice.

They did get the footage they were looking for. What they didn't expect was to see the decaying buck laying in bait, waiting for days on end, only to strike and consume what hunted it.

They decided to mark the woods off limit, in the end. No use interfering with that side of nature.

This was something humans were never meant to see.

Are your cats based in/on a certain clan?

I kept the clans ambiguous in their backstories so that I'd have some wiggle room to place them in different stories/AUs, but I definitely have preferences.

Snailshine and Magnoliabreeze have ThunderClan vibes. It's hard to explain but they do. Dawnfall could truly go anywhere, but TC would be the most fun.

Redhaze and Spottedfawn's stories were made with ThunderClan in mind, hence the wooded backgrounds, but recently I've favored WindClan for them as well. Redhaze's behavior would stand out more in WC, I feel— and Spottedfawn's long leggies would be right at home.

Lostwind and Flaxhound are WindClan warriors too. Lostwind's suffix literally comes from her clan (having fought against being named Losttail). Flaxhound's dad was a barn cat but his mama was a WC warrior. She's a fun character too.

Coldstar was originally created to be the leader of a fanmade clan: MoonClan. Out of the canon clans, however, he'd be most at home in WindClan.

Tigerleap, Thornrush and Newteye were made with RiverClan in mind. Tigerleap would love fishing. Thornrush is much scarier when she isn't hindered by water. Newteye is already a mystery so being a cat that likes water would be on brand for them.

Swampkit has ShadowClan built into her heart. It's hard to imagine her anywhere else. Talon joins ShadowClan in a few AUs as well (warrior name: Talonheart), though I generally prefer her to be a loner.

Her father fully intended to raise Spottedkit as one of the most powerful warriors in clan history, having specifically chosen a strong Savannah cat kittypet to be her mother. He began her training as soon as she was able to stand.

To Redhaze's horror, his daughter turned out to be a soft-hearted pacifist. Being forced to fight, or even hunt, would always bring her to tears. None of his planning or rigid discipline had amounted to the powerful warrior he'd dreamed of. It didn't amount to a warrior at all.

Having observed Spottedpaw's struggles from the shadows, the healer Sagenettle stepped up to demand sole mentorship over her. The leader obliged. Redhaze publicly disowned his daughter shortly after the ceremony's conclusion.

Ties officially severed, Spottedpaw learned how to heal her own emotional wounds alongside her regular lessons in medicine. This knowledge was kept close to her heart when she graduated from her apprenticeship.

Spottedfawn grew up to be a widely beloved healer. Though the role traditionally focuses on physical health, she goes out of her way to tend to emotional and mental health concerns as well. She's a great therapist and a massively comforting presence.

Redhaze is obsessed with founding a powerful lineage of warriors. Unhappy with the options within his clan, he purposefully broke code to seek the affections of a pet Savannah cat. He believed her wild cat genes would give his offspring a great advantage in battle.

Coldstar is a deeply religious tom. He consults the stars on a nightly basis, refusing to make any major decisions without their approval. Overall his leadership is stoic and collected.

Outside of his duties as a leader he is a quiet and reserved tom, mostly keeping to himself. He has few friends and even fewer whom he confides in. Out of shame he suppresses his own insecurities and doubts, considering them them to be signs that his faith is not strong enough.

Easygoing and affable, Flaxhound doesn’t worry about much. He doesn’t think about much either. The tuxedo tom seems to drift casually between small-scale adventures, enjoying all the novelty he can find in them.

Despite his laid-back attitude, his love of adventure does inspire something of a daredevil streak in him. The state of his right ear is the result of a lost game of chicken against a badger. It wasn’t the first time he’d played.

Thornkit was likely everyone’s least favorite addition to the queen’s den. Enthusiastically she explored her surroundings with fang and claw first— no leaf, rock, queen nor kit was spared from her needle-toothed inspections. Lacking malice (or any sort of forethought at all, really), her behavior frequently confused and annoyed those around her. Queens were relieved when the calico menace finally moved into the apprentice den.

Her impulse control didn’t see much improvement as she grew older but, thankfully, that feral energy was redirected away from her clan mates. For the most part.

I haven’t finished her adult ref yet, but here’s the colored sketch. Her design is inspired by bearded vultures.

Swampkit is cranky little thing. She hates being told what to do— someone is always on her case about cleaning up her fur, not biting so hard, putting that disgusting thing back where you found it. They never understand her deep-seated need to collect unique treasures. Pretty rocks, cool bugs, smooth bones and other bits and pieces are carefully hidden away so that adults don’t take them away from her.

Below she’s pictured with her latest prize: a decaying hawk talon.

Magnoliabreeze was a full-fledged warrior prior to switching to the medical profession. Most were shocked when she became the healer's apprentice; her peers fully expected that she would soon settle down and start a family. There were rumors, at the time, that most desired bachelor in the clan was actively planning his proposal. She'd always been popular with toms.

Secretly, Magnolia loathed the pressure of all these expectations. When the rumor turned into reality she launched into a spiral of panic. Hastily, she announced that medicine was her true calling and she would henceforth be devoting her life to it. The fact that celibacy was divinely mandated for healers was left unspoken.

In time she proved to be a very skilled medic— aside from her frosty bedside manner.

She's a Mean Girl™ who gets suspiciously flustered when other ladies are nice to her.
