Dune thing I noticed on my most recent rewatch: the old Fremen Reverend Mother uses the Voice on Jessica to make her drink the Water of Life. Obviously Jessica has agreed to undertake this ritual and she doesn't really have a choice in this situation, but at the last moment, when she is still hesitating, she gets a shove.

Then Jessica herself uses the Voice on the temple guardian to make sure Paul will be allowed to drink the Water of Life when he shows up. And she uses it again on Chani to force her into her role in the prophecy.

Something something direct force being used at every turning point to bend reality into the shape of what was "written" whether people like it or not.

regarding Dune Part 2: i am obsessed with its consistent visual theme of self-destruction. the shot of paul surrounded by his new followers seems triumphant - until the viewer remembers that each crysknife is made from a tooth of shai-hulud, and paul is standing in a circle of them, in the allegorical mouth of the worm. he orders a missile strike, and the viewer sees them fly directly through his head. every victory for the prophecy is a blow to paul himself; he's killing himself with every step he takes towards his destiny, and we know that already, and the film is screaming it, but it's a hell of a thing to watch it happen, isn't it?..

Ah yes Dune, we have witch bitch wizard Mother of the millennium, narrative successor accidental-deliberate genocidal religious despot, eldest daughter traumacore war criminal princess, the only one who can think straight but is doomed by falling in love with the said prophet-despot, 4 year old space cocaine abomination turned cult-leader, and fridged malewife. Family of all time truly.

Really digging the subtle little arc that Paul goes on from when he and Jessica arrive at Sietch Tabr and he says "I must sway the non-believers" (I don't think he means convert them to the prophecy; I think he means convince them to follow his lead politically; but still seeing the Fremen as a tool to be used in his personal revenge quest), to when they're talking before Jessica leaves for the south and he says he's staying in the north to fight but that "they deserve to be led by one of their own" (ie. I'm in this fight because I believe in it but I don't expect to gain anything for myself and actually I probably shouldn't).

The fact that Paul is only becoming more convinced that he is nothing special at the same time that people are starting to worship him. The fact that his own mother is doing everything possible to accelerate that process and the two of them keep moving further and further apart (literally, he is going north and she is going south). The fact that people keep telling him he should just reach out and take the power that's available to him (Jessica with the prophecy, Gurney with the nukes), it's so simple, look, it's right there waiting for you, it's your birthright, wouldn't this makes things easier? The fact that he resists all of these arguments right up until the attack on Sietch Tabr, and that it's his best, most human impulses (grief over watching his home be destroyed again and guilt that he should have seen it coming; if he'd just seen more clearly or understood the visions better--) that make him finally decide to step onto the path that dooms him and everyone else.

Love that one of Rebecca Ferguson’s favourite scenes from Dune Part One was a “sensual” scene between Jessica and the Baron but it was cut. She really is on your side with the incest undertones 💕
